    I use it diluted correctly should last 4 to 8 weeks in a sealed spray bottle out of sunlight 1.2 to 1.25 ml per 32 ounce spray bottle then add enough distilled H2O to fill the spray bottle. I don't rinse just let the foam bubbles drip out after 10 to 15 minutes. It does contain acidic phosphates to kill bacteria and other microbes. If you are phosphate sensitive could react with you.

    One tip I personally have is you should put your water in first when titrating chemicals. Even if starsan is relatively harmless when mixed you should always try to prevent splashing back solutions when working with chemicals. Other than that I did get some info out of this. Thank you!

    Good show! I read somewhere that diluted Star San has a shelf life of 2-3 weeks. I don’t know if this is true, however I made a 5 gallon batch before reading that and will never come close to using that much in that amount of time. Guess I’ll have super sanitized kitchen and baths for a couple weeks.

    You should ONLY rinse it off if you aren't planning on using the equipment immediately and if that is the case you should be using something else.... It says right on the instructions "DO NOT RINSE".... This is because the StarSan is meant to be a protective shield against microbials in the short period that the equipment/container remains wet.

  • @kreynolds1123
    @kreynolds1123 Рік тому +2

    According to Star San's material safty data sheet (MSDS) says 50% of the product is "phosphoric acid 75% concentrate added to solution". I'm guessing which when further mixed to manufacture recommendation (1 ounce to 5 gallons) is probably about as safe as the food grade phosphoric acid that's added to Coca-Cola to make it tart tasting, but it still slowly erodes the enamle off our teath. The GHS-US classifies phosphoric acid as skin corrosive 1b which is fairly low.
    But, the MSDS also says 15% of star san is dodecylbenzenesulphonic acid. It is added to make star san foam, but the GHS-US classifications for this ingredient are: accute oral toxicity level 4, low 1a skin corrosion, and aquatic acute level 2. It seems this chemical isn't very stable and may break down from photolysys, minerals in tap water, and too high of ph.
    The very very very thin film of diluted star san is safe when used appropriately to sanitize equipment and left to dry. And while i'll drink a can of Coca-Cola, I would STRONGLY recomend NEVER drinking star san even if it is diluted to 1oz star san per 5 gallons of water. But that's just my opinion.

    How long can you keep the sanitizer in the bucket for? Can you leave it in there and re-use it to sanitize tools like your mixing paddle everyday during the primary fermentation stage for example? Or do you have to empty it and remix a new batch after every use?

    Thanks for this… I still get weirded out and rinse the foam haha i know that’s not the correct way but have you looked at toxicity of other chemicals added to wine like Camden tablets? Just curious.. I’m trying to make wine using least chemicals

    • @HowToDoneRight
      @HowToDoneRight  2 місяці тому +1

      I'm with you on the foam. Seems like it should be rinsed but every time I do it in camera someone calls me out on it. Lol. Some of the additives are natural and safe and I limit these down when possible. But the Campden tablets are for bacteria control and always better safe than sorry. Pasteurization of your wine is a way around that but will lose flavor and not good for your wine in general. Store bought wine has so many more additives so already homemade wine we are ahead of the game. That's how I look at it. 👍👍🍷🍷
