Great critique, Joey is so confident and quick with his comments - you can tell this guy's a pro. Technical and straight to the point. This guy and Mike Kelley always deliver.
I like this Joe and his work. I actually agree with a lot of his criticism. This was a good episode one day I’ll feel confident in submitting for a theme or two.
Can you please do iPhone 11pro max vs Pixel 4 xl camera comparison? It would be awesome and will help people to make decisions on which phone to purchase
Two of my images, Katie @24:38, and Zandria @ 59:46 made it to the video, and I want to thank the Community, Patrick, and of course Joey. Joey Wright is not only a great photographer, but he is equally a great teacher of photography. What I have learned about swimwear photography has come directly from Joey’s mentorship. Watch his videos, attend his workshops, and watch his Twitch casts. Thanks Mr. “Bikini Jesus” Joey Wright!
I want to apologize for failing to mention how much it was a pleasure to work with professional models - both Katie & Zandria were amazing to work with.
I think the one at 31:13 is photoshopped. Just looking at the light it looks like the light from a studio. Then you just put her in front of a white background crop her out and you paste her on those perfect waves in the background. They got really lucky to get those waves if it was a true outdoors shot.
I honestly don't think it is. The photographer wrote that it was taking in Thailand with a Profoto light. You can easily get studio lighting on location with a good strobe and light modifier. That's not to say this isn't "photoshopped" because almost every photo you ever see has been altered but I don't think this is a composite of a studio girl with a landscape background. -P
To me, level 1-4 is technical and level 5 is art. We can all make "good" shots with a sexy model, nice location etc and the right camera settings, but the real top level is artistic. Is it sexy _and_ artistic? Does it tell a story? Not many shots achieve all those things.
For the photo starting at 24:45, the guest seemed really uncomfortable for this one. Was it because it was taken at his workshop? If he were to give a 2, would that reflect poorly on himself with his teachings? Or perhaps he didn't want to offend the person who paid him for the workshop experience? For each challenge put up by Patrick, the guest's voice didn't seem to have as much confidence behind each answer. Of course, I have no opinions on the photo, I think it looks fine. I have zero idea knowledge about swimwear. I was just feeling the awkwardness during this segment.
I took that photo of Katie, and on Oct 21st 2019 Joey did a Twitch cast were we talked about it (I only found out about the results that evening). Joey is 100% honest, and a great teacher & critical reviewer of images. He has no problems with “telling it like it is” to his students. During the Twitch cast he told me, and all listening of one additional critique he had, and I took it to heart. If you want to learn swimwear photography, Joey is the best to teach it. If you want your swimwear photography critiqued, Joey is the best at it.

@@FStoppers Hahaha well I have, but when the other palm is not there it just looks funny, especially for this video hahah 😅 Cool critique, guys! So much information, it's right up my alley, so thank you for that!
The problem with the first one is the floor. It has enough detail to catch your attention, but it has nothing to offer. You can either make it darker or, if you want a world class photo, take it in a transparent pool with a nice view below
the cosplay-like image of the spider girl. that image is a composite. the background is an image of the top of the Oculus in NYC. like this: mymodernmet.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/the-oculus-santiago-calatrava-4.jpg . and post processed really good
It would be interesting if the folks posting included what they shot with and what equipment they used. Then you could also critique the gear they used. I think this would be really helpful. Just an idea
I like the idea of people posting the gear they use, but I can see the point about the string de-evolving into a war of words over brands, and DSLR vs. mirrorless. However, to be forthright, I have 2-images reviewed one this Critique, Katie & Zandria. For both, the same day, I used a Phase One XF, with an IQ160 digital back, and for Katie I used a 55mm, and for Zandria I used a 120mm Macro.
Patrick is like a chameleon, always camouflaging his original opinion to perfectly match the other person's opinion xD You know enough about photography, stick to what you think and then we hear the opinion of two people instead of one!
Joey's input is goos but takes to much time to explain a point. I think he needs to slow down and be straight forward on his comments. But still a nice guy.
@Jack Frost - I shot this image, and like all model images I shoot, without regard to fashion, or swimwear, I focus on the model’s leading eye. Zandria has amazing eyes, and since the image was not to sell/advertise the swimwear as a brand, my choice was Zandria, and her eyes. I appreciate the critique.
My first attempt at underwater photos, for a swimmer. She was actually swimming. Its not a setup. Ive checked out this guys portfolio, nothing exciting for sure.
Our point was usually your first attempt doesn't belong in your portfolio. Not saying there isn't something amazing to do underwater with a real swimmer but that shot just lacked something that would stand out among other under water photographers. -P
@@joeywrightphoto this is just me being over sensitive. If it wasn't a swimmer actually swimming I would have taken the cc better. But, i can see your perspective.
If you want a System where people don't vote lower to increase chances of winning. Make it so the highest rated image doesn't win anything. Wouldn't you rather honest ratings over dishonest winners? :/ Anyway, shouldn't the mid/lower rated images win a tutorial? As they would actually need it.
Yeah it just seems awesome to have two winners, one random and one highest rated. I can't imagine taking the highest rated image element out of these critiques but maybe that's something to test next time. -P
I like the way that worth 1000 used to do it. Critiques were weighted so if your critique was too low (compared to the average vote on the photo) too often your vote was worth less.
There is a reason your channel viewership is so male dominated. It’s just so common and it’s boring! You didn’t even try to get a token dude in there. It’s just trying to get more pictures of hot girls in less clothes. Which is fine in moderation but this channel seems to be really into swimwear shoots and it’s just exhaustingly bro-y
If you actually had reviewed the images posted for critique, you would have seen make images. That being written however, the were 2 or 3-images, and the Community did not vote them highly. I am but one comment, however I found them quality images.

Any chance on bee photography as a critique?
They did a video on macro recently so I doubt it. That's also oddly specific so there's no way they'll do just bees....
