I always had them tightly packed in box shapes when well out numbers, even against cav and still managed to cling to victory. This update will definitely help keep the deaths low though.
You're gonna want to put heavy infantry right behind them for when the cavalry get knocked off and get up to slaughter the pikemen. Also gives a reason to remind players that cavalry can dismount. Unmounted cavalry will massacre pikemen.

@@TuDeDaTe the problem is their minimum effective range is huge, whereas basically any one-hander infantry thrives inside of that range, but spears don’t have the DPS to put down an enemy before they close the distance (especially against a shield, which virtually every one hander infantry will have) One possible solution is to make AI soldiers actually use shield bash and other stuns. Another is to make the shield hit boxes less insanely generous (which they should do anyway, it’s absolutely ridiculous how little the hit box matches the model)
Yeah, spears are good to put down horses, but in close combat, when heavy knights get up on their feet, they suck balls. Only Viking Conquest fixed it. Spears and javelins are basically one of the best combinations there, because you can use them as footman with shield, as cavalry, and even as range weapon. Block, move forward, thrust, back, repeat. If you lost your shileld, swing your spear like a madman.
I personally don't understand why they made pikes shit against infantry. Remember that Epirus fought with pikemen and even Rome lost to their unbreakable formations

I mean in real life it works kinda like that, spear bracing does not protect the infantry, it can only slow the momentum of the calvary while killing the first or two line of calvary, the momentum will stop after 3-4 line of infantry IF they don't break and run away, the Frontline of the infantry will still get fucked.
In real life horses don't charge at a formation of pike/spear. Because they'r not stupid and don't wanna die. Problem was, to keep an actual formation without panic/routing, a difficult task when you are facing an heavy cav charge
In real life it isn't a spear wall if it is not 5+ ranks deep and the calvary don't make it through, riders a long with horse are impaled from the 2nd and 3rd rows of spears
after a few horse and riders get dropped in the front the bodies dont despawn like in a game. you then have to jump over your dead friends just to land on a pike.
Wish cav could run through men knocking them over and destroying weak likes of infantry istead of just clipping and stopping on impact. Such a ruined immersion
you can download a mod which i forgot its name where if you charge infanries with horses they will fall down or fly away depending on your horse weight and speed and you deal a lot of charge damage as well it was a good mod but cant remember the name

Open source armory mod has shoulder strapped shields, so you can use spears and pikes two handed while your shield can still protect you. I dont see why this wasnt done more historically, Macedonian pikemen aside, as being able to thrust with two hands is obviously more effective.

Well, actually, in M&B : Viking Conquest and in Mount & Blade : With Fire and Sword they are pretty neat against cavalry (in F&S only hired with heavy armor and Sweden are badass even in defending castles, because they have insane range of strike).
in singleplayer pikemen will do this automatically when they detect cavalry charging at them, but it helps to mantain them in a stationaty position and not in ''charge''
@@getemguapo_tv if I'm not mistaken, vlandian seargents also can perform a spear brace (they put their shields on their back first), so I wouldn't say it's currently worth it to have pikemen in your formations, they are bad at melee and lack shields for dealing with archers. if you are running mods like realistic battle mod they can be very useful though.

Depends if they are evenly matched in numbers. Fighting several spearmen is always a hassle.

Most of the Cavalry die on first impact. Those who get dismounted are then outnumbered and killed fast.

Try playing it on something other than a Mac or Potato. Stable 90 fps on ultra setting, 1000 troops on field. Mediocre Pc.
