Had an old man put anti freeze in the diesel tank of a John Deere tractor some years back, No smoke, no run, 6 hours to get the system cleaned out and start the tractor.
I was operating a backhoe when I was stationed in Afghanistan, someone put diesel in the hydraulic tank and hydraulic fluid in the diesel tank after servicing it. Needless to say, I got halfway to the work site and had to have it hauled back. I was not amused. I made the mistake with my '76 454 Suburban of not paying attention at the gas station and grabbed the green nozzle. I got about 12 gallons when I realized my mistake. I filled it the rest of the way with premium. I ran 3 full tanks of premium before I got all of the diesel burned out. Boy, was my baby a Smokey Joe.
I don't know why but to me that was weirdly satisfying to see it go from smoking to running fine again. I still can't figure out why this was recommended for me to watch. Oh well it's good to learn how to fix this if it ever happened to me. It's fine.
That's ok, my GF put 19 gallons of diesel in my 1999 Dodge Ram 1500. So when I finally found out what happened, the story came about that her mom thought she would be nice and fill it up. Then they drove it around and called saying it ran like crap. She calls her mom and asks what you put in it, and she says "Its a Dodge I put Diesel in it Duh!!!". She's no longer my GF, and she actually had the nerve to ask if she could borrow the truck again the next day I said oh hell no.

+William Todd (williamtodd) Dude its not even a big deal...I had a moron put diesel in my Audi...had it back running in a couple hours, and most of that was pumping out the tank with a hand pump.
I had a similar experience. when I was in my teens I would do yard work to earn a few extra bucks. one couple that I mowed their lawn on a regular basis, had their regular mower in the shop. and the wife remembered that they had an extra one in a shed. and told me I would just have to put some gas in the tank and everything would be good. whelp, I filled the tank and started the mower up and proceeded to mow the lawn and the engine started sounding really rough and grindy. and then all of a sudden there was a loud bang! and the engine came to a grinding halt. and while I was looking it over, I immediately noticed a fairly large hole in the side of engine block, and the end of the piston rod sticking out. what she had failed to tell me, was that the engine ran on two cycle fuel.
@@abdulbarshams9564 he is talking about two-stroke engines that have to use a mixture of fuel and a special oil in the gas tank. If you do not mix the oil in the gas the engine will seize because two-stroke engines do not contain crankcase oil and receive lubrication from the oil that you mix into the gas.
Years of gas with oil being put through that mowers fuel system would’ve wild enough residue free to run it two days on straight gas without a issue why do people make up these lies.

Back in the late 1970's my brother borrowed my car one weekend and put 5 gallons of fuel in my car. He too assumed it was regular gasolines but it turned out to be DIESEL FUEL. So he dumps 5 gallons of it in my tank, which still had an equivalent amount of regular unleaded gas in it, which roughly made it a 50/50 mix. It seemed to run okay but my car, a 1971 Chevy Impala 350-V8, didn't seem to have the power it did before. I topped it off with regular gasoline and it seemed to be fine after this.

Zero harm to a gas engine? Or was all your gasoline in the diesel can?

He took the recoil starter off to use his drill starter so that he wouldn't break the recoil pulling on it a bunch of times since it's hard to start at first
Eh, its more harmful than you think. The plugs get fouled up with oil and carbon, leading to hard starting and poor fuel economy. Plus you end up with unburnt fuel dilluting the lube oil, shortening engine life. And if that wasn't bad enough, the excess carbon forms lumps in the chamber. Later on these carbon deposits cause preignition and detonation, damaging the engine further despite it being back on the normal fuel.
Never said it would make the engine fail. But it will make the engine perform poorly if it isn't serviced afterward to clean up the mess that has been made. Without being serviced afterward, a later situation requiring good performance could cause engine damage because of the effects of all that carbon fouling- assuming it hasn't already been burned out by the lean-burn properties of ethanol blended gasoline.
