@@keegantolvstad4572 watching it with him is what I consider my 4th watch, and that's not counting being caught up with the manga and reading that weekly since Fishman island.
This flashback really does put everything Luffy has done in a whole new context. Even back in Eines Lobby and his words before going into Gear 2 "I had to get stronger, to make sure no one ever has to go away again." and telling Robin he fully understood who her enemy was now that we know he's lost family to the WG's bullshit..... damnit Oda is amazing.
24:10 Garp’s face when Dadan says she’ll take Luffy’s side no matter what kind of pirate he becomes is super telling, imo. Mans spent the boys’ entire lives trying to force them to be like himself and here’s this bandit showing more genuine empathy than he was ever able to muster up. It’s gotta be revelatory, seeing her confidence in their choices despite his own lack thereof. Dadan is still one of my favorite characters ever introduced.
Another reason why Oda's such a great writer. He doesn't write in black and white. He shows all the different part. He takes a theme and explore that theme in different aspects. Like here how he showed different reactions to a very difficult choice - what could have they done in Ace's predicament (Dadan's love for family coz those were her boys vs Garp's morals) Neither is correct nor wrong.
I can't recall how many millionth time i've watch this Garp-Dadan scene.. every fcking time, I still got teary-eyed. First time i've watched this scene, I sob like a kid! Such a sad yet so amazing scene!! *Dadan may not be their mother but she is their Mommy!*
fun fact: that part at the end of the flashback where luffy sets sail and uses pistol on the sea king is how the first chapter ends off. the anime didn't really adapt that part until this point, since it started off differently. (chapter 1 started off with the roger speech and shanks "flashback", then does a ten year timeskip to luffy starting off his journey in the end.)
I can't count the number of times i have seen these episodes before, yet i cry like a baby every single time. Oda and the voice actors are GOATs when it comes to emotional moments.
@@Faxityy I love your reaction man, especially when it comes to nobles and celestial dragon 🤣🤣🤣. Fun fact, I already watch One Piece 7x (with the latest episode) so this is my 8x watching One Piece allover again with you 🤣👌🔥.
I feel sad bc of the crew separation, ace death, ASL backstory, but what i cried the most is how much this hurts luffy, how all of this connects.., literally the worst for him in all of his experience. That's when it truly hits me that Luffy was still young 😭 😭 💔
Dadan beating up Garp is my all time favorite moment in OP. People say “Garp couldn’t… ” “Garp had no choice” etc. as Dadan said he chose duty over family. Regardless of consequences, He specifically chose not to do anything same way luffy chose to go and assist Ace ASAP. Garp has crazy feats, is undoubtedly strong and renowned but him not saving Ace will always tarnish him for me. Obv Ace had to die etc for story and plot but Garp failed Ace and it was his active decision.
Fully agree with you, Garp let it happen. There was even a moment on the scaffold where he confirms with Sengoku that he was going along with Ace execution. Garp really failed Ace in so many ways, and it's sad to see traces of Garp in the way Ace turned out as a person-- his eating habits, narcolepsy, the way his signature attack uses his fist which gave him his nickname. Child Ace even asked Garp if he deserved to be born, and Garp couldn't give him an answer, as easy as it could have been just to say yes.
@@MarikitKaNa that part killed me. Garp not giving a child aka Ace a specific answer and basically saying you’ll figure it out as you go on. I understand tough love and men being emotional is frowned upon etc but this is a specific point where one simple I love you could have ended his whole internal conflict. Ofc everything had to happen as it did but I would have liked it more if Garp wasn’t there at all. Marco could have assisted him and even sengoku said I ain’t ask you to fight so he did it to himself. Then to get mad at akainu was outrageous like he didn’t assist in that
@@bow_ttg2049 That part kills me too!! We can see how much Luffy's feelings for Ace changed him, and how Whitebeard's acceptance of him affected him, so we know that simple words from Garp would have made a world of difference to Ace. It's entirely possible that they would not have ended up that way at all, though ofc, plot wise, this was all necessary. As for Marineford, I get that Garp has his duties and reputation, but what are those when you can't fight for the people you love? I know Ace gets a lot of hate for confronting Akainu and it ended up tragically because of the circumstances, but I think it starkly shows the difference between Garp and Ace. Garp is alive but can't really defend himself against Dadan's grief, and Ace is dead, but he stood up for and sacrificed everything for the people he fiercely loved.
what makes garps situation so much worse is that he's literally the HERO of the navy he's not like some nobody, hell even a admiral betraying the world government wouldn't be as bad as the fucking HERO of the navy betraying them.
That sceen with Jimbei is one of my favourite sceens in the anime, there are a few of them with Jimbei through out the series which makes him my third favourite charcter in all of One Piece! Love him and love your reactions!
Problem also is if Garp helped he could have been court marital and it would have just made the situation 10 times worse not just for him but Luffy as well. I don’t think Garp didn’t do anything to help just because it was his job or morals… there is probably a much bigger reason he needed to maintain his position as vice-admiral that Oda just hasn’t revealed to readers and viewers yet. I think it’s being presented to us now as Garp chose his “morals” over his family, but that doesn’t seem to be the whole reason based on his character and would make him to hallow like Akianu. Sometimes what might seem the simple course of action is actually much more complicated for the parties involved.
20:53 This whole comment is so true. Oda-sensei is great at giving us everyone's point of view which makes it really hard to hate them. There are many who disagree, but I too like the Navy, Admirals and all. If they want to blame someone, blame sensei for making characters like that.
I once saw theory that Ace's tatoo asce means that: A- Ace S- Sabo(crosed cause he's dead) C- Crybaby(aka Luffy) E- Edwart Newgate(Whitebeard) But in that flashback he has this tatoo at his 17, then he just left Luffy
Hey Faxityy, after the Marineford arc and after this chapter watch the Movie 3D2Y of OnePiece it will cover somewhat half of what happend to luffy on that island of women and also at the marine ford ❤❤
PERSONALLY imo I watched this episode both in subbed and dubbed. LOVE both BUT the dubbed had more of an impact because the sentence says (I wanna see them!) in subbed. DUBBED says (I wanna see my friends… I wanna see MY CREW!!) I love both, but the dubbed has better English when translating words.
It was a great scene. I particularly value Oda’s way of portraying depression and grief. But I feel like Jinbe is invalidating Luffy’s struggle at that moment. It felt like toxic positivity. It was diversion rather than acceptance. It did not address Luffy’s internal struggle. Although Jinbe was very instrumental to the progress of Luffy, the best course of action first is go through the stages of grief first for anyone who lost a family member.
Fair, but he wasn’t processing the grief in a healthy way at the point. Physically, of course, destroying everything around him and threatening his own severely-wounded body. But also emotionally. The feelings that Jimbei told him to bottle up were regret and guilt, specifically. Luffy should not have been feeling guilty; it wasn’t at all his fault. He shouldn’t have even been feeling regret; he couldn’t have done anything differently to save Ace. Since that is what was overwhelming Luffy, I think it would be a better psychological choice to engage in some diversion, at least until he’s in a better physical shape with a more productive attitude.
Man don't feel bad I'm crying with you through all of these and I've watched this show front to back 3 times.

What a magnificent arc this was. Love ASL.
“How can I leave a wimpy brother like you behind?” This is kinda a foreshadow too since Luffy is no longer that crybaby he left behind
