It’s surreal seeing Luffy leaving Windmill Village, knowing that in a few short days or even hours, he would be meeting Coby in episode 1/chapter 2. What a prologue!
Shank's little speech/inner monologue, the "it's ok to cry, but you have to move on", that is probably the one that has hit me harder from all of One Piece, it have made it into my life and is the one advice I say to myself every time I'm struggling with depressive thoughts
13:01 This even goes back all the way to Alabasta when Luffy throws Smoker and Ace through the bar and when Ace is walking back to see who did it he walks through a families house that got wrecked by it and he bows and apologizes to the family as he crosses back through. Great stuff looking back on it
The last episode is good learning guide to use in order to help kids learn about death and loss. I have taken notes on what Shank and Jimbei said: 1. Shank may be a pirate but he is a very wise man. It's true whats he said about loss, grieve and sadness. It can only help you become a beter man/woman. 2. What Jimbei and Ace said is also true. Even if we were to lose someone dear to us. There is always other people present in your live that can help you get throught the hardest days before it start to hurt a little less as time goes on. At least I got to see my favourite Mama Bear Dadan again and how she reacted on Ace death. Man, Oda knows how to break us down.
I lost my foster sister a few months ago to a tragic accident. We had been estranged for many years and to this day, I have not allowed myself to grieve for her. Yet rewatching One Piece with Jack, I found myself tearing up when it showed Luffy in the throes of grief and I wish I wasn't still so angry at my sister. I love her and I miss her and my heart is still hurt by the things she said and did. She was my Ace and my heart hurts without her.
When Luffy said for his crew at the start of his journey in the flashback of the episode, he was referring in saying he wanted 10 crewmates alongside him; meaning a total crew size of 11 including Luffy himself (meaning at this point Straw Hat Captain Luffy has recruited 8 members into the Straw Hat Pirates)
Ace did meet shanks when he first became a pirate and was making a name for himself. They met on a snowy mountain and Shanks thought he wanted to fight at first but then it turned into a party (like most things in Shanks' life) once Ace revealed he was Luffy's brother.
This part of Luffy’s journey really spoke to me and broke me a few times - having experienced almost similar things IRL (both literally and figuratively). We all need a Jinbe during out time of grief. ❤ Can’t wait for you to get to Dressrosa Arc.
Jinbe is just the goat, from when he was saved by Luffy in Impel Down he did nothing but help Luffy through all the insurmountable troubles he faced. I love this man...uh, fishman.
Btw the scene of Luffy setting out to sea and one shotting the sea monster was in Ch.1 of the manga alongside Luffy's backstory with Shanks. Hell, the barrel explanation that you seem to desperately want is literally the beginning of Ch. 2 of the manga. The anime did a LOT of the East Blue Saga differently.
One of the most emotional moments of One Piece is Dadan beating up Garp. She’s usually so scared to even say anything against him. But learning of Ace’s death, she was so overwhelmed and so upset that she would attack Garp, the hero of the Marines, without hesitation. It really shows how much she loved Ace, he was her son.

It is just crazy that the anime does not show this scene of Luffy setting out to sea until episode 504 when in the manga, it was chapter 1! and they don't even show how he got his scar under his eye yet!
That "I still have my friend" Is the hardest line ever heard and will always be my all time favorite moment from one piece. It teach me the best lesson, when u lose something u need to remember what you still have and protecting it the best you can.

If i have to chose one scene to say that this is the most sad scene of one piece, is dadan and garp encounter. No matter how much times i've watched it, it always get me
Luffy punching the Lord of the Coast and leaving on a rowboat is in Chapter 1 of the manga, I would give it a quick read Jack! I never liked how the anime messed with the little details of the very beginning.
episode 505. gets me every single time. I've had to face the trauma of loss more times than I'd have wanted to go through but this one ALWAYS helps find solace and a little light at the end of the tunnel. this is the kind of episode which makes one piece the greatest ever
Remember in Arlong Park, Luffy tells Arlong, that he cant be a swordsman, he can't cook, or navigate or lie. He can't do everything alone, thats why he needs his friends! He is not a strong person because of himself, he is strong because he values and respects his friends!
Jinbei talking Luffy through his grief is one of those rare times when i feel like the English dub did it better. Rather than saying "What is it you still have" the dub has his ask "You still have something worth treasuring, don't you?" and I feel like that expresses what the crew means to Luffy better. They aren't just his friends, they're his treasure. Even as important as his hat is, he'd toss the thing into a fire to save even one of them.
I love One Piece. The scenes that Oda writes that cut to the heart of what really matters most the characters is something he does so masterfully. Dadan, who is usually afraid of Garp, beats the crap out of him showing how much she loves Ace and Luffy. I don't know how he keeps track of so many things. He adds depth to even the smallest of details; Ace feeling relieved that Luffy had reliable friends who care about him, which must have brought him peace in his sudden death, knowing he didn't have to worry about Luffy. It doesn't matter how many times through this show I go through. I am always amazed there is a story like this one.
I like how you explain your thoughts and feelings and how you enjoy the series so much! I'm wondering if you could start Podcast or something which can be listened to during commute..??
It gets me in the feels when Luffy tells Ace in their petty kid fight “I’m gonna make you cry one day” knowing he did make Ace cry on that execution platform, tears of happiness for all the love he was shown from his brother (and the WB crew) as he said “I’m so happy the tears won’t stop”. From then onward Luffy made Ace cry one last time at that last moment “Thank you for loving me”. I just love that when Luffy says he’s gonna do something and he does it, he will exceed expectations and do it in the way he only could.
8:35 In episode one they showed how Luffy ended up in the barrel. He encountered a whirlpool which pulled his boat in. He hopped into the barrel so he didn’t drown when the whirlpool crushed his boat to pieces.
The part with Luffy setting off (except for him mentioning Ace and Sabo) was actually taken from the very end of the first chapter of the manga, the rest of which was adapted into Luffy's flashback in episode 4 (the one with Shanks). Him putting down the local sea monster with a Gum-Gum Pistol was the payoff of him claiming his punches are as strong as a shot from a pistol during that time. Anime onlies just had to wait 500 episodes for it. BTW, he ended up in the barrel because he swam his dinghy right into a whirlpool.
Ep505 is the biggest tear jerker episode. From Dadan-Garp to Luffy remembering his friends, which imo, is the most emotional scene in the show. I always cry.
I've lost a big chunk of my relatives during the last years and at first I was like the enraged Luffy, but my friends always quote this scene of Jinbe making Luffy realize that's important to focus on what you still have, thanks my friends! I love you :)♥ and thanks One Piece for all!!!!

Todays been absolute trash today but watching your uploads make me happy all the time for real.
Mother is not afraid of a mere naval hero. The sight of Da Dan beating Garp will always make me cry.

But they are in haste in treating someone badly injured.
Who might that someone be? 🤔
Great reaction! Damn this hits so hard!
Ep505 is the biggest tear jerker episode. From Dadan-Garp to Luffy remembering his friends, which imo, is the most emotional scene in the show. I always cry.
Been waiting days for this one
I loved that reaction Jack, the ASL arc hit me hard too!! I even have a figure of them 3 as kids! Did you check ace's tattoo again? 😅😅
Yo! Jack! Have you realized what was up with Ace's tattoo yet? The A(S)CE.... S was for Sabo

What got me a lot was how defeated he was, even questioning the king of the pirates dream he has.
I've lost a big chunk of my relatives during the last years and at first I was like the enraged Luffy, but my friends always quote this scene of Jinbe making Luffy realize that's important to focus on what you still have, thanks my friends! I love you :)♥ and thanks One Piece for all!!!!
That luffy counting his friends scene always gets me
