  • Yamaha TPS - Throttle Position Sensor - is one of those topics that you never heard about, until it leaves you high and dry by the side of the road with no way to fix it and no idea of what it may be.
    With that in mind, Yamaha a few years ago made a recall for all the defective TPS serial number ranges, but not everyone got to know about that, and many different models of Yamaha's that use those defective TPS's are still out there.
    But let's start in the beginning, what is the TPS, what does it do, and why should you worry.
    In a nutshell, the TPS is a small sensor that sits on the right side of the XT660R - may differ on other models - and will tell your injection system how much of throttle you are giving, and on its way, will adjust how much fuel it needs to deliver. Once it gets defective, the bike will start to stall, usually when pulling the clutch to start driving, and once the problem gets worst, it will stall even while driving.
    So what can you do?
    First of all, click on the following link, it will determine if your bike is within the brands recall - www.vosa.gov.uk/vosa/apps/reca...
    Secondly, give our blog post a look, there we show some pictures that might help you compare the old and the new models of TPS :)

      Tea2Wine thank you so much for the quick response. My vstar is a 2002 1100 and last week while I had it out I was on the open road and decided to open it up as soon as I got down on the accelerator it paused, hesitated, and then stalled out. I got it to the side of the road and when I went to turn the ignition switch on my odometer and the neutral light flash repeat repeatedly until it didn't do anything. I finally got it home and put a different battery in that I had, at that time it didn't start until I located a 10 amp fuse for the ignition. now, what my problem is the bike will not run and I don't hear the fuel pump being energized. So I hoping it's either a relay problem, fuel pump, or a fuse that I might have missed. Thanks again for your response and the lead to the manual it is really appreciated! Be safe, God bless, thanks again!

    Can a faulty one cause a no start? I’m asking because my 07wr250 will not start. But I took tank off and noticed a wire was bare and rubbing against frame. It looks like it is for the tps

    • @BNAdv
      @BNAdv  3 роки тому

      Hey Cameron,
      Well, the list of things that can prevent a bike from starting is huge, and for me at least, the TPS sits down on the list. That being said, the TPS adjusts idle, so it can cause issues, but not necessarily on not starting.
      I would say I start with the bare wire, as those can cause all kind of trouble.
      After I would trace back what you may have done or not done since the last the bike started until this point, and if that still doesn't give you any indication on the problem, I would start with the common issues:
      - starter/kick
      - spark plug and leads
      - bag fuel
      - injection/carburator
      - air filter and leaks
      Hope it helps!

    Does this apply for a 2015 yz250f? My bike runs like crap until I hold it wide open but it sounds like it runs lean, and it’ll idle hard and shut off when I pull the clutch in and it takes around 15 kicks to start in 30* weather, it will fire over but die and does this after 5 kicks and will run fine all day but then the next day it’ll run like crap, it’ll pop, backfire, bog somewhat when trying to get on it in neutral, on hillclimbs it’ll jerk me around and cause me to crash it, what can I do to check this TPS? Bike has amazing compression

    • @BNAdv

      Sadly mechanics over the internet is a rigged game. There are many things that can be wrong and without immediate trial and error as well as a personal diagnostics nothing I can say will help much ☹️ I strongly advise a visit to a mechanic, and get to understand the issue so you build up knowledge for next time 💪

    I know this is an older video, and I dont have a street/enduro type bike so dont have the diagnostic screen. I have a 99 WR400, and having a stalling issue. Long story short, I bought it cheap non running, sat for 10 years. Did a complete carb rebuild, new gas tank, plug, and it will start just fine. But will stall unless the idle is cranked up. I made the mistake of removing the TPS when I rebuilt the carb, so my question is... Is it possible that the TPS is causing the stalling or is it more likely the float? Tried adjusting the air/fuel mix more times than i can remember.
    Anyone?

    • @BNAdv
      @BNAdv  3 роки тому +1

      Hello Lorenzo,
      Mechanics over the internet is always tricky and something I avoid doing at all costs because I cannot run my own tests and have a look as something may be missing or overlooked.
      That being said, TPS adjustment, idle adjustment, improper needle kit or otherwise carb re-build, and a deep check for leaks or clogs in the admission would be amongst my first go-to searches for troubleshooting. But again, take my tip with a grain of salt as I do not have access to the bike.
      Hope it helps!

    Hello, I'm currently riding a xt 660 x and it suddenly started acting up(increased fuel consumption, hesitating throttle and when warmed up it stalls at low speeds.) after cleaning the throttle body I feel the bike has higher idle speed and it feels more responsive. My tps starts from 31 and the values are 17-99. Any hope that the tps is good and my problem was the throttle body?

    • @BNAdv
      @BNAdv  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Mark,
      I'm sorry, but I don't troubleshoot mechanical problems online, there are always details that go missing over the screen when compared to a hands on inspections.
      That being said, and based solely on what you said, I would verify the manual for idle check, and check the manual for throttle freeplay, most likely replace the spark plug while checking spark cables as well just to start.
      But again, without seeing the bike I won't be able to try and help you more.
      Hope this does help somehow!

      @@BNAdv Sure its impossible to have everything solved using a computer. Well basically I've even changed the fuel pump imagine that.. . All in all today I removed the Throttle body since it had a vaccum leak and i found that both of the rubber intakes (the one that goes from head to throttle body and the one that goes from throttle body to the air box) were torn. Ordered 2 brand new from Yamaha, will check and let you know!

    • @BNAdv
      @BNAdv  3 роки тому +1

      @@markbazarewski6308 oh those little rubbery bastards... with the 660R I never had that problem, thinking about it, never had it with any injection bikes. But with the carburetor ones I've had over the years, that happened a lot, and it was never the first thing on my mind to search.
      A couple years ago, I had an issue with the 660r, where the idle was all funky, the bike would stall, even at higher RPMs.. a mess. Checked everything, removed everything, and ended up assembling it all again, thinking it was probably something that had come out of place.
      Nop, all the same.
      Out of desperation, as I was roughly 10.000 miles from home and not intending on visiting the local garage on a language that I couldn't even say hello on, let alone explain my troubleshooting, I replaced the spark plug.
      At the time, if you had forced me into a blind test between the one that was on the bike and the brand new one, I wouldn't be able to tell you a single difference in wear and tear, and on simple tests like both sparking on demand every single time for instance.
      Sometimes it's the darndest things...
      I hope those new rubbers help, and yes, please, let me know. I'm always happy to see problems solved and learn new troubleshooting ideas!|

      I'm sorry, but I don't do mechanics over the internet, there is always something missing when compared to seeing the bike in person. So I always advise a trip to a qualified mechanic.
      That being said, the 660R is know for having bad fuel mix from stock, and any work made to it that was not aimed to fix that, may make it worst. So without knowing much about your specific bike, I would consider talking to your mechanic about a Dyno trip to rectify the fueling map. This is not the cheapest option by any means, but it is the one guaranteed to fix the problem, or help find out what is not allowing the bike to run smoothly. It sure helped me.
      Kev also has a DIY fix for fueling, which is a lot cheaper. If you don't know what I'm talking about search -kev fuel mod xt660.
      Still, I would advise the help of a qualified mechanic to set it up if you are not qualified yourself.
      Now, as I said, I don't know your bike, so I'm not saying you have a fuel map problem, I'm just saying it's common, so worth checking out, and that those are my suggested ways to do it.
      Hope it helps!
