- We've lost count of the number of times this happens. You start a new RPG and the first area is a sun-dappled rural paradise. Then, within an hour, it's toast. Usually because someone was after the protagonist. Here are 7 examples, let us know your own in the comments!

It's not a real RPG if the main character isn't an orphan by the end of the prologue
It's a requirement of the job
Its not a real JRPG if the main character isn't an orphan by the end of the prologue. I would argue that in most non JRPGs the main characters life is not to bad.
I am really struggling to think of any good rpgs where this isn't true. Either they are already dead or are dead by the end of the prologue or finally need rescuing after the prologue.
What about the persona games?
Lol yup, even the ones who find there parents end up just looking at stone statues of their petrified parents bodies. Poor Red XIII
Can't imagine a Friday without hearing the legend that is rob! Since 2014 you've had me in stitches so thank you and please never stop!
aw thats adorable
johnny walker the ufc fighter? lol
@@floydpink4077 haha nope, did muay Thai boxing for 10 years but now I'm just a fat bloke who collects ps1 games haha
Jonny Walker hell yea
Your inclusion of Legend of Dragoon made my day. I’m right there with you holding out for a remake
This is the third or fourth time, at least. One of them was classified as - and I'm paraphrasing - "bosses you literally cannot defeat"
Me too! I love the Legend Of Dragoon! It's one of my all time favorite games! I wish they would make a remake.
Rob "Don't buy a House next to Velvet"
Me: "I'm a masochist!"
Rob: "You need to be alive to feel pain"
Yes! Xenogears actually got mentioned! Always start your game off by accidentally killing your love interest, good job Fei.
Always good to see an entire list created so Rob can talk about Legend Of Dragoon again. I approve sir, I approve ;)
Rob: ....still holding out for a remake.....
Everyone: "we all are....."
Yes we are hopefully it's next after Medievil
I'm with Rob on Legend of Dragoon! Amazing game that I'd love to see remastered or remade. Unlikely to happen, but still...
There are multiple online petitions to get it remade/remastered/sequeled. Google them and sign
Most people wouldn't know of it, but one of my childhood games was Dark Cloud. It's interesting because after your village is destroyed by the main villain, you almost immediately begin a journey to recreate it (by collecting sealed fragments in a dungeon).
You can just throw everything in random places (via an editing screen), or you can choose to improve everyone's happiness by adjusting the placement of people's homes, adding moats, etc for various rewards.
Then, you get to go to other places that were ransacked, grab more party members, and repeat the whole process.
Sidenote: a 2nd choice I thought of, which isn't a playstation game, would be Golden Sun
"Every time an RPG protagonist shows up, they burn our village down!"
"LEAVE US ALONE, VIDEO GAME DEVELOPERS!!"
I, I understood that reference.
😆
You know it's gonna be a good list when it starts with Legend of Dragoon. I'm with you Rob, hoping with all my heart for a remake.
lol It's about time the Suikoden series gets some love from Access XD
Suikoden 2 is probably the greatest "non-Square-Enix" JRPG of all time, so I agree.
It's so true! More people need to play the Suikoden series (and S2 is still my absolute favourite game ever)
@@paine_inflicta now that konami is putting out some classic game collections hopefully we can get one for suikoden
I came to comment exactly that haha
suikoden all the way one if not the best jrpg they were so damn intricate
Thanks for the Suikoden segment. My favorite series and I am still holding out for a PS4 remaster with trophies but will probably never happen
With it being a Konami IP, I wouldn’t hold your breath.
@@biggiejerseysTV wish Capcom has the right of Suikoden... we would get a remake by now (considering the launch of megaman, RE, DMC).
the 2nd entry of suikoden is truly a masterpiece and cannot be duplicated, recent JRPG has crappy quality and too much weaboo fans service
konami is starting to put out some classic game collections hopefully if they sell well we can get a suikoden collection
Xenogears was such an epic game! It doesn't get talked about as one of the greatest JRPGs of all time nearly enough
Been playing Final Fantasy 9 for the first time since it came out. Shortly into the story, you find yourself stood outside Dali.
“Peaceful, green, windmill-lined Dali... You’re going to get blown up,” I thought. “You’re going to be the home Zidane never had, full of simple but hardworking NPC characters who teach you about patience and respect for nature. Your demise is going to fuel the story and show the lack of shared values you and the antagonist have.”
Nope, not even at all.
Could be a follow-up video. 7 RPG twists that shattered your clichéd expectations.
Thank you for Xenogears!
It's my all time favourite game.... And I'm 30 years old now, how time flies.
And the award for most tenuous introduction to a Friday Feature goes to...
... brilliant by the way!
Insomnia looks beautiful, but don't live there if you've seen kingslaive or returned there in chapter 14
Yep. The place gets absolutely annihilated.
Even if by some miracle your village isn't wiped off the face of the planet you know the little bugger's going to waltz into you house, steal all your elixirs and / or break you vases
Duncan Lambert or steal some money you have in a chest. Damn thief
Was looking forward to this all day. Thanks Rob!
Tales of Phantasia: You go hunt a boar and you hear the village bell later, then you return and its all destroyed.
Dark Cloud.
Kingdom Come Deliverance.
And I'm sorry for this...
Fable: The Lost Chapters
What's wrong with Fable?
Yeah Dark Cloud had everyone's hometown destroyed AND you got to rebuild them. Wins by default.
...Damn. I just remembered Katamari Damacy.
@@enthyx2573 It's an Xbox exclusive, while this channel is PlayStation exclusive, other than that absolutely nothing.
@@lucky98802 Not an exclusive anymore: I have it on steam, but your point holds up none the less.
@@lucky98802 Oh, wow, didn't know that. I've played it on pc for a very long time.. Thanks
Just gonna add this little bit here: For the Tales of Berseria bit, the scene they show in this video is the international version, where Laphicet (the little brother) seems to be sacrificed via some kind of magical ritual. But in the original Japanese version, he just gets straight-up stabbed. That motion you see Artorius do into a glowing thingy? That's not a glowing thingy in Japan, that's a little human thingy. Which then gets tossed like a ragdoll off the end of the blade and into a seemingly-bottomless pit.
Shot in the dark, Nibelheim from Final Fantasy 7
(20 seconds later) you did not disappoint
Home towns that get destroyed makes me think of "Dark Cloud", one of my favorite Playstation 2 games. Although the town isn't so much destroyed as it, and everyone in it, are actually stored in floating bubble things. Which gives you, as the protagonist, the chance to collect the parts and people, then rebuild the whole thing however you like.
Xenogears got mentioned. I'm not disappointed :D.
I was thinking Tales of Beseria, so I was happy to see it up there at number 2.
Zanarkand was a great pick; the graphics are beautiful
The lack of Dragon Quest XI in this video disturbs me
I've watched your Friday features for years and this is the first time you've mentioned so many jrpgs that I've enjoyed playing that it's good to know that you have played them and enjoyed them as well. This makes me very happy.
XENOGEARS!!!! Greatest rpg ever made in the history of video games. Thank you sir for mentioning it
Pretty much all Tales games have your hometown destroyed at one point. Tales of Phantasia, Tales of Symphonia 1 and 2 (the town is rebuilt in 1 and you get banished). There are a few games where they are safe, but not many.
OMG I was going to mention Xenogears the town that was sadly destroyed due to faulty equipment. Or not knowing how to work your mech. For shame. Brilliant Rob. ♥️♥️😁😁
Well done! Love the reference to some games I'm sure many have just forgotten about. The Suikoden franchise and Xenogears are amazing as well as Legend of Dragoon! Wish they still made RPGs as good as these.
Xenogears was one of my favorite games growing up! So happy to see it mentioned here!
Dave absolutely nailed the "home and away" type tv host
Um Rob aren't you the Friday feature protagonist? Someone should warn your neighbours!
“Robert, if I find out you’re the reason I can never meet anyone I’d invite in for a cup of tea and a gossip, you’ll be sorry.”
I'm really happy that Legend of Dragoon was on the list, but I was still expecting Dragon Quest XI
Best Dragon Quest ever. It was my personal GOTY last year, tied with God of War.
I feel like it’s slept on by many, I love the game so much
So happy to finally see my favourite game series (Suikoden) on my favourite UA-cam channel. Also happy to hear someone pronounce it the same way I do.
But still completely wrong
I thought it was "Soo-wee-koh-den"
I think it is soo-wee-ko-den. But when it first came out and I couldn't google a pronunciation we always just pronounced it sue-koden. I'm more happy knowing I'm not the only one who looks at that word and thinks that's how you pronounce it.
Can't believe Tales of Berseria finally made it to a friday feature, love that game, cheers Rob
Cobblestone in Dragonquest XI, but thank F for post-game play
Ahahaha! That 'People Buying Houses' intro... I love it!
Honorable mention to Dark Cloud (Chronicle) 1... but Toan restored everything!
Dark cloud would have been such a good fit for the list given the intro sequence tooo...
came to comment it myself, but ill just piggyback off yours :)
The first few seconds made me think this was an ad, the next few seconds proved otherwise and that it was a PlayStation access video
Nice, I had been able to block the Xenogears cutscene so long... and then the nightmares return.
Always looking forward for a Friday Feature.
In Every Robin Hood Movie They Burn Our Village Down
LEAVE US ALONE MEL BROOKES
EVERY TIME THE MAKE A BLOOD ROBIN HOOD MOVIE THEY BURN OUR VILLAGE DOWN!
Suikoden 3 in the thumbnail! Rob you are spoiling me silly, thank you sir for the memories.
Fable's was especially brutal when the protagonist finds out later on that not only that their older sister is alive but that she can see the future and she saw a vision of your home village being sacked by bandits at least a day before it happened. Yet she gave no forwarning to anyone about it.
Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Come: Deliverance
Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Deliverance starring Burt Reynolds
Rob, you are the best. Your channel is the only one that ever mentions The Legend of Dragoon. So few people know about it, bravo.
Disappointed about lack of Dark Cloud but still a great list!
SUIKODEN!! Awesome to finally see one of my favourite series on the list
What about dragon quest 11 hometown bening destroyed because he is the luminary
Xi got surprisingly dark. I was a little unprepared for it TBH.
@@devontoner6177 I wouldn't call it surprisingly dark, considering the series in general is pretty dark underneath it's lighthearted art style.
Dave, your acting is getting better mate. And it was already top notch. When can I expect to see that big, beautiful face of yours on the big screens? Ricky Gervais won't know what hit him.
love the suikoden being on the list, underrated series and wish it would be brought back Suikoden 6!!
The production values have certainly gone up. It's like entering a golden age of PlayStation Access.
Xenogears! The first mention on Playstation Access!?.. If so, you lot should be ashamed; that game is a gem!
Best rpg ever. First thing I thought of was Lahan
@@brianturnbough4955 Same, i hoped i will see it here, and i did :))
@@Idtelos True, if only they could finish CD2 as they wanted :(
We need a remake, like 3 years ago :D
Legend of Dragoon and Suikoden are just amazing games. I want that Dragoon remake as much as Rob does.
Loved the video.... and made me smile seeing Suikoden 3 as I LOVED it, no it is not the master class game 1 and 2 were but it was fun and well worth the money and time wish it would get a remaster or at least a digital re release for the Ps4.
At this point, re-mastering Suiko 3 wouldn't be enough. Konami would have to completely remake the game. Playing as realistically modelled Chris Lightfellow, Hugo and Geddoe WOULD be amazing!
I must say Rob, you are getting more and more creative with these introductions. :D Good job, man!
I believe they forgot Dragon Quest XI Echoes of an Elusive Age
i love the little skits you guys always do! great video as always! :)
Tales of symphonia has another town destruction that I think is pretty bad
Yeah destroyed by pissed off elven sorcerers just because the protagonists decided to go outside of town and snoop about the elves' slave camp
Yeah but Iselia sucks anyway that’s why dirk lives in the forest
SO AWESOME to see Rosie in a sketch! Hi Pro Juice, nice to see you working your lovely new job! :D (If she's been in other sketches, give me a break, I only watch Friday Features and I'm catching up on them right now with the help of the playlist, which is in reverse chronological order.)
It's about time a Suikoden game made it on the list!!!
Watching this i wondered why lordlake from suikoden 5 wasnt on the list
Loved the intro, great creativity by the team. Was well chuffed you mentioned Tales of Berseria, it's one of the best RPGs on PS4 & a personal favourite of mine. Those who love a JRPG - get it played! Also, happy you mentioned FF IX, it's my favourite FF, although as a special inclusion you could have put in FF VI.... for obvious story spoiler reasons;)
Mention Xenogears, get a like. It's quite simple.
still one of the greatest games ever
Yes!
I've been asking for years! He clearly has not played the game; faulty mech my foot!
@@850twalker I believe he did that because of spoilers.
Weltall "malfunctioned" all right...
In the case of Zanarkand it was destroyed twice, once 1000 years ago, and once in the beginning of the game. Two different cities in different locations, time zones and with different inhabitants both destroyed by different methods all because they’re called Zanarkand.
Bottom line is: don’t name your city Zanarkand.
FFX has the best opening in any videogame ever imo
*Facts*
@@lightsidemaster I dunno, The opener for FFX-2 was pretty good too :D
Understatement.
It'll probably up in contention with the Best Opening in any entertainment medium.
I don't know about "the best" but it was damn good.
Ooooo, I'd say ff8 followed by ten but opinion is opinion.
Thank you Rob for another amazing video! :D
Love that FFVII started it off xD
Liked and commented just because of Xenogears, one of the best RPGs ever ( damn you FFVII for cutting the budget -.- )
Rob has had a lot of great intros over the years but this one was amazing!
Just recalled Xenogears and turns out it's in the list lol
Thank you for every instance you've talked about The Legend of Dragoon. Such an underrated game. I really hope they remake it.
does that thumbnails is a sign for new suikoden 6 game!? Dammit konami gimme new suikoden
Making my life better, the Friday Features. The creativity the Access team puts into linking reality shows to video games!
301, the club if kings!
Oh man Rob. You almost had me believe Xenogears was finally out in the UK. A great game, but I'd love to see a port released.
I loved the Suikoden series! They should put thise on PSN. I miss playing those.
😎🍻😎
they are available for PS3, so if PS5 haves backwards compatibility we might get them there too
@@ivanborges67 God I hope so! I still have the games, but my PS3 isn't working well enough.
😎🍻😎
I love the happy-go-lucky music 😂 You guys make such great content!
in kingdom hearts 1 your whole world gets sucked away by darkness
This world has been connected...
Tied.... to the darkness... soon to be completely eclipsed...
There is so very much to learn. You understand so little...
One who knows nothing can understand nothing.
All worlds begin in darkness and all so end...
I've thought of Kingdom Hearts as a action adventure more than a JRPG
@@MargaritoTrevino well you level up, change weapons and accessories, speak with nps,, you can do sidequest and enemies have different stats and weaknesses. So i assumed it as an rpg
@@nummergraph0289 you might be right
Jade Empire - two home towns are destroyed (and you can also destroy a couple).
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - I think Taris counts, and also the Jedi Academy on Dantooine.
God... seeing the Jedi Academy destroyed and run down was really depressing :(
Three. Only three characters you play in Suikoden. That's a bleeding rip off.
3 main characters. Countless more playable ones.
Dragon Quest XI protagonist loses his hometown twice. Once as a baby, then again at the start of the game. I never actually realized how much of a trope this was in JRPGs. 🤔
noice list and love the intro ;3
Really enjoyed that intro, the live action stuff is always interestingly funny.
God Bless the new female for playing along on the Friday Feature. Hollie never bothered. I miss Hollie. Where's the Badger?!?!
"ProfessorJuice" aka Rosie Caddick. :)
The finest estates one can buy are in the suburbs of Raccoon City. I love the squealing sound of hunters combined with the constant hum of zombies when opening the windows to enjoy a little breeze of decaying flesh in the late evening.
Don't fret Rob... We ALL want a remake of Legend of Dragoon...
Also, it's pronounced "Sue-ee-ko-den" not "Sue-koo-den"
That's what he said.
I CALLED Legend of Dragoon being first on the list lmao never change Rob. ALso, been away for a while, and I'm so excited to see Rosie on the show!!! Been a fan of her for years on her youtube channel
Rob, could I get a shout out from all of playstation access to say Happy birthday please, 29 today and best day for a birthday for a Friday feature 😊
Same! 26 today! Happy Birthday!
Happy birthday 🎂🎂
(grabs a sniper rifle and, shoots into the house wall) HBD!
I'm really enjoying these skits before the episode starts. Looking forward to seeing what's next for next week ;)
Have a Nice day :)
AGAIN Legend of Dragoon! I came into this video just to see that game being mentioned again! THANK YOU :D
Well, technically speaking Fei's Gear doesn't malfunction, it does exactly what it's meant to do because spoilers.
Wow. I have seen many lists from A LOT of different channels...and this is the first Suikoden 3 shoutout I have ever heard. Brilliant game! I replayed the whole thing a 2nd time and used a save exploit to replay a certain battle a bunch of times to gain an automatic 3 levels and got to level 100 in the early game. It feels AMAZING to actually win all of those battles that you are supposed to lose for story purposes.
You know... DQ XI had the hometown destroyed BECAUSE the Protagonist followed the call... hmm... ya think ya can make a list of "7 Times Your Lovely RPG Hometown Was Destroyed, because Protagonist followed the call"? :D
About Tales of Berseria, since I'M into Warhammer Fantasy: rather average for Warhammer standards. :P
I look forward to these videos EVERY week!
Rob I love your continued mentions of the legend of dragoon. That game always feels too underrated and im with you on the remake it needs to happen.
I never even thought about this, it literally does happen in some respect in almost every JRPG
love the skits you guys have been bringing in lately!
love your videos! looking forward to them all week!
keep going rob!
