Thank you very much for the lovely relaxed button accordion lesson. I grew up in the 50s in a part of Ireland where traditional music wouldn't have been that strong. However as a young fellow I got my hands on a single row key of C melodeon and learned a few tunes on it, of course all in the key of C. I didn't play it again for about 50 Years and I got a B/C box a few years ago but I am struggling a little with it, especially tunes in the key of D. Thanks to you I now can play the Ballydesmond polka in A Minor on my B/C box and I am over the Moon. I can't wait to learn a few more.
The key to buy your accordion in, for playing Irish music, is B/C. A quick google came back with 'buy a Hohner blackdot on ebay for around £300'. I checked out a thread on 'thesessiondotorg'. The two row accordion is used by 95% of Irish players and is the type of box that we would recommend you buy .. Let me know if you need more help and let us know how you are getting along.
Hi Everyone, Thanks for all the comments and likes! Please feel free to ask any questions you have about this lesson or anything related to Irish music in general. We'll get an answer to you asap :)
I know I've heard that tune before .. with an entire Irish band playing it. Pretty sure it's on my MP3 player. I always thought it sort of a "sea chanty", but definitely Irish! Cheers!
Hi. My name is Sergio, I live in Argentina. I want to start playing Irish style accordion. I am a musician but I don't play accordion. I don't decide yet for a system in B / C (I think it's special for jigs, but not many chords) or for another in D / G (jigs and some chords too) ... I admire Sharon Shannon and Tim Edey. ... What system would you recommend me? Thanks greetings.
Hi Sergio, We teach B/C on our site only. I'm not an expert in the differences between the two tunings but if you prefer the players that play C#/D then go for one of these boxes. I'm not sure anyone in Irish music plays a D/G accordion. Both systems are good for chords.
Looking to start playing trad accordion, couple of questions: Generally what key are accordions in for Irish music? Where can I find/ what brand offer a fairly cheap first time accordion? Why are two row button accordions used, is this the best type to buy? Thanks! Fantastic video!
Can I play this tune in a G/C box? I am finding out that I can play parts of the melody two different ways, using more of the lower row, or more of the upper row of buttons. Sort of like how you can play a melodic tune on the five string banjo two or three different ways. I play by ear. Thank you for this instructional video, and I just joined your site! :D
Got a great b/c box (Serenellini) but it seems you have to get the bass buttons tuned to give you a D on the push action. Is it the two buttons that replace the C on the outside (C/G to give you D/G) or the inside (C/F to give you D/F)????
Look for "jr mesa y su acordeon , he plays traditional norteño music or ,"bigshow71" he plays all kinds of norteño music and makes it real easy I'll figure out how to send you the links and send you more that are on English and you send me links of easy Irish songs I can learn I'm from Tijuana mexico but I live in Kansas city
Hi, I am currently looking at buying a button accordion for a beginner adult. I have looked at a lot of different makes available in Ireland but I am struggling to decide which one would be the best. They are all around the same price and seem to have the same/similar features. What brand would you recommend eg. McBrides, Wren, Garvey AAA, Lisheen. Also to play in sessions in Irish pubs would you be better off to get the 23 button or the 21 button. Would you be at a loss minus those 2 buttons? Thanks.
+laura robideau Most Irish dance music is in G (which you could do on a G/C accordion). Where it falls apart is that there are lot of irish tunes which are in D (the most common key for Irish music) and A (some reels are in this key). You couldn't play in those two keys. But there are lots of tunes in G which you could play. It's very different fingering than what he's doing here, which requires a b/c accordion... kind of a more complex (and usually more expensive) box.
Hi John, these lessons are for B/C, but you can download the notes and an mp3 of the tune from the OAIM website here - oaim.ie/course/45/bc_accordion_foundations
+Jonathan Segal I would try the site: thesession.org/. If you search for tunes on the site, there is a button which says "sheet music" and a PDF version of the sheet music will come up. It has hundreds of Irish tunes and frequently multiple versions of the same tune.
It's possible learn a Serge gainbourg son with this musical instrument ? Dieu est un fumeur de havanne. sorry for this title but it's the name of the song.
I don't have any key, i'm know this gainsbourg song and maybe in the irsh accordeon have another sound, it's on the youtube. I leave in another country, another continent i'm from Brazil , i don't now nothing about accordeon stuff but admire your culture and this song tells a love story( A BEAUTIFUL LOVE STORY), Serge Gainsbourg was what he was, so maybe with the purity of this sound of the accordeon, SORRY FOR THAT, but thanks for re'answering me. A love story between two lovers.
+Jordana Alcoforado Most French chanson is in C or G and if you play French waltzes, Yann Thiersen or Breton music, those also use G/C. You can get quite inexpensive accordions which play those keys just fine. B/C is specifically geared for Irish instrumental music but that absolutely doesn't mean you couldn't play in C or G on it (it's almost fully chromatic although some keys are very challenging to do)... it's just that it's quite a bit harder to learn this accordion than a G/C one so it's kind of overkill.
It's dificult but not impossible dieu est un fumeur de havanne in my mind tells a love history about a french woman and an irish man fits well in the history because is a confrontation to the irish catholic society, but i understand that is dificult.

Hi,
I am just trying to buy the right button accordion for Irish reels and jigs...and I am confused about the best key to buy?
Thank you!
Cheers,
Mike
Mike neitzel Hi Mike, the most common tuning used for Irish music is B/C. All OAIM tutorials use this tuning - oaim.ie/lessons-a-courses/accordion
Thanks but I don’t know what notes to play ??
Hi, this video is not designed to teach you what notes to play. If you search for beginner accordion lesson I'd be fairly sure you'll find that..

The usual Irish tuning is B/C but it's difficult to learn! A D/G is another good option.
Can this songs be played on a honner ttc diatonic accordion ,greetings from Kansas city
You would need a box tuned to B/C to play this tune the way it's taught onscreen.
does anyone know a good place to buy a 1 or 2 line button accordion?

Can I use a D/G box for this tune
