I saw this on broadway last night, and I literally was FLOORED by Jessies entire performance, Not only can she belt out music, her acting is impeccable, she literally cries on stage and she is just unreal.
Yea the acting can really elevate these already amazing songs. That’s one of the aspects I love for Ben Platt’s performance of Evan Hansen. You can hear the emotion in his voice and body language as well and it really pushes the songs to the next level.
I teared up at this number. It reminds me of so many things that went wrong in my life and I couldn’t even hold it back at this point. She’s such a phenomenal actress and it motivated me to become a performer. That night I went there was just about 3-5 minutes of applause. It’s so powerful

She sounds completely different here than in her other performances due to her laryngitis. But this is by far my favorite performance of this song by far! So full of emotion and kinda sounds like someone who is in the late stages of pregnancy might sound. almost broken at this point, so all the out of breath or "missed" notes sound perfect to me.
I actually think her voice sounds way better here where she's sick than in her other performances!! It's so powerful and so magnetic it's just amazing to watch!
Her sounding like this while having laryngitis is super realistic to what Jenna would actually sound like, singing this song. Pregnancy changes the voice. It adds so much depth and dynamics to her performance!! She did an incredible job!!
It's been years since this performance and I had no idea she had laryngitis till today!! Especially since I prefer this one to the cast recording. What an amazing performer!
The first time I heard this song I broke down in tears. Because I'm a 65 year old woman that has gone through hell and back and the hell and back again many times and yes somebody does come through the back door and carves out of person that makes you believe that this is you when someday you look back and oh my God you really do miss that person you used to be you realize she's gone and she's never coming back and you do look in the mirror and you don't recognize yourself, this is why I busted out in tears. This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written about a woman I really do believe that every woman has experienced this song one way or the other but when you're old and gray and your children grown and they look at you and say I miss myMom. And the only thing you can say back is I miss her too. But life has carved out a lovely lady that is baked in a beautiful pie, when I smile at my family it says it all. So I thank you Sarah for writing such a gorgeous and truthful song. 🎶🎶😘 And by the way. I'm still here.!!!!!!😏
SPOILER ALERT! She is pregnant with a baby by her abusive husband and doesn't really want the baby, but up until right before this she's been squirreling away money hoping to save enough to enter a baking competition, win money, and become independent so she can give her baby a good life. But right before this number, her husband found the money and she's just wanting to go back to how things used to be and the person she used to be in the past.
The amount of passion, hurt, powerlessness, anger, and tenderness in her voice is indescribable. I promised myself I wouldn't cry and now I'm bawling like a little kid...
No matter how many times I watch this, "scared of the life that's inside her" gets me every freakin' time, then the long note does me in. Jessie is incredible 😭😭😭😭😭😭
This is what happens when a show gets too successful, all the focus goes on them and then the amazing shows like these who deserve recognition get ignored and don't sell well.
1:34 idk why but the way she sings "start over" just gets to me and I have to keep replaying it because its just fjskdbshsjjbsbdhjana there are no words
YESSSS!!!!! ugh!!!! i've literally replayed that part alone so many times!! That - and the way she sings "when she's bruised and gets used" Ugh, i faint every time!!
I showed this to my monolingual Vietnamese-speaking mother. She watched and cried without understanding a word of English. That just shows how talented Jessie is.
For me, as a guy, the amount of times I have rewound this on Bluetooth in the car says it all. Amazing performance in NYC. If I was dating someone I would take her.
Jenna Barnett More like the amount of times I've listened to this. I was introduced into this song by Annapantsu and then I kept listening and now I see this, I'm an emotional wreck and now this is my favorite song!
The way she says pie at 3:08 breaks me. After building up this whole emotional breakdown throughout the song that peaks as she’s belting, it’s as if she’s realized that the person she was really is gone, and in a way she’s come to terms with the fact that she’s changed. All she can do now is cry because the person she used to be is never coming back.
She delivered so much emotion in this performance. Not just through the singing but also the body language especially the fumbling around like someone utterly heartbroken and lost. Good God, what a talent!!
I come back to this specific video time and time again throughout the year, every time I find myself sobbing.......I've never seen this level of embodiement of character anywhere else, and that voice 😩
I know I'm way behind. I just learned about Hamilton from my sister. I saw someone performing this on the Voice. I did not know anything about this song but I guess the singer was good enough to make me tear up.That got me so into this song that I got to this video.I've heard Sarah B sing but not Jessie Mueller.Wow...What a great performance and yes I'm drying my eyes before my daughter makes fun of me.
I personally love this version more than her studio version. It's so raw and emotional. I love the slight raucousness in her voice when she goes higher; it's perfect.
Jessie is amazing. Her voice is so amazing she's going on autopilot and putting her energy into that raw emotion, and both are perfect. THIS is what a true broadway talent looks and sounds like. She's just amazing, so amazing.
I'm 25 years old now, second born. For some reason, I'm seeing my mother in this song when she was 19 and pregnant with my brother (her first child) She never felt loved all her childhood, her parents were physically, mentally and emotionally unavailable. They forced her to work as a maid to provide instead of studying at a very young age, 9 yrs old. Her parents represent the lyrics "a man who can't love" I felt my mother's raw emotion from Jessie's voice, her loneliness, inner wish to rewrite her dreams, her deep pain, the cuts she'll never forget, fear for the child inside her while getting a single hope to "fight a little", and recognizing back her identity as someone who once had a fire for a beautiful future. I cried from the heart of my mom, especially for giving us the love she never received. I respect her, that's I always try my best to make her realized that we are proud of her. She is perfect to me, She's now loved and well taken care of. We are happy that we get a chance to love her back. This song is her story, in a way. This song gives HOPE and POWER to everyone out there. So THANK YOU. 🥺❤
I just saw this tonight and was floored by the ENTIRE cast. But Jessie Mueller was absolutely amazing. Her soft voices pulled you in so far you forgot where you really were and her belts were just perfect. I did not hear a single missed note in the entire performance by anyone, which is saying something because Sara Barielles definitely didn't write an easy book. Amazing.
This is seriously the most emotional performance of She Used To Be Mine I’ve EVER seen, and I’ve seen Waitress live 4 times. Jesse Mueller is seriously a machine.
8 years later, and as a Hamilton fan... I just had my first baby girls a few months ago, and even though I loved this song already, it hits even harder than it originally did way back then. I know it is already beloved, but it still deserves even more recognition and love than it already has. ❤
the part “reminds her to fight just a little” fucks me up every time! the way jessie stumbles like she’s unstable and she’s weak but trying to fight to stand on her own two feet is so...powerful....
This sing popped up on some Watch Mojo List and I looked it up… Now I’m crying with no context for who this character is or what the story is cause she conveys her pain so well!
I have heard multiple takes on this song, all of them great. But, I just love the actual lyrics themselves so much. Song have a way of expressing the feelings we sometimes can't, and I feel that is exactly what this song itself (no matter whose voice it comes from) does. Bravo to all. XO
Same it’s just so captivating! I tried to sing this beautiful song and my friend played the piano, it’s not perfect but it would mean the world to me if you saw our version! 🤗❤️
i was at a state thespian competition and during the opening ceremony for critics choice, a small boy sang this song. it was absolutely gorgeous, and no words can describe how moved i felt. now i rarely ever cry, but after watching his performance i was bursting into tears. i’ve never listened to waitress and practically everyone who left the auditorium was in shambles. it was an absolutely stunning performance and had my troupe director wishing he was a student that went to our school. i really can’t wait to see where he gets when he’s older, hearing him sing was actually like hearing an angel. 💕
Jessie's performance of She Used To Be Mine is the only one I've seen where I forget that I'm watching a performance. I don't see an actress belting an awesome 11 o'clock number. Her emotions and style choices reflect what Jenna is going through. She fully embodies Jenna from start to finish.
Just listening to this is something spectacular, but watching Jessie act it out is something else. Her emotions were so powerful. I loved it. Definitely underrated.
I think I account for at least 25,000 of the views on this...and I cry every time! Jessie Mueller wrecks my heart and I love it. Hope to get to NYC to see this on stage.
This song is, in this 55 yr old ladies opinion, a masterpiece. I cried in the cinema and each time I hear it. It’s complex in a way you might think someone as young a Billie can’t possibly understand but then you realize she is a genius.
Jessie to this day is a legend for going on stage and delivering this incredible performance! Sarah Bareilles is fire for creating the atmosphere and music and will always be adored
Jessie Mueller. What a voice. I love Sara too don't get me wrong but my jaw is always clenched in agony from Jessie because her emotions are so raw. Damn woman. Amazing. ❤❤❤❤
There are lots of renditions of this song on youtube and everyone has their favorite. I personally think emotion and performance is more important than vocals. This is especially true on Broadway. Obviously vocals are important but of the two being able to totally make me forget that I am watching a performer on stage is the biggest thing. Jessica easily makes forget she is portraying Jenna because she is Jenna on that stage. That to me ls what separates great performances from real Broadway stars. I have seen a few others sing the song as good or perhaps even better but none of the others had me totally convinced. This is true of most Broadway shows. I personally saw 3 Evan Hanson's on Broadway since it is my son's favorite musical . Only the last one I saw truly had me believing he was Evan. The young man may not have Ben Platts pipes but he was Evan on the stage. My allergies acted up a few times watching him. Jessica tends to make my allergies act up as well. But mad respect to all of the Jenna's. I know it is a very hard character to portray on stage. But it is also a dream for many talented young ladies to get be her.
Very true! I tried to sing this beautiful song and my friend played the piano, it’s not perfect but it would mean the world to me if you saw our version! 🤗❤️
I’ve listened to this song so many times. The first time I really listened to the lyrics I got to “she’s imperfect but she tries, she is good but she lies, she is hard on herself. She is broken and won’t ask for help. She is messy but she’s kind, she is lonely most of the time. She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie. She is gone but she used to be mine.” I honestly started crying because of how much I relate to that part
This is the most moving performance and song I've heard in a long time. I have not seen the play, but this scene guts me to my soul. I cry every single time I watch it. She is phenomenal.
Jessie Mueller really put absolutely everything into this unique & remarkable performance. I am so floored by her raw power of storytelling in just this song. 🤩 🙏
t's not simple to say
That most days I don't recognize me
That these shoes and this apron
That place and its patrons
Have taken more than I gave them
It's not easy to know
I'm not anything like I used be, although it's true
I was never attention's sweet center
I still remember that girl
She's imperfect, but she tries
She is good, but she lies
She is hard on herself
She is broken and won't ask for help
She is messy, but she's kind
She is lonely most of the time
She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie
She is gone, but she used to be mine
It's not what I asked for
Sometimes life just slips in through a back door
And carves out a person and makes you believe it's all true
And now I've got you
And you're not what I asked for
If I'm honest, I know I would give it all back
For a chance to start over and rewrite an ending or two
For the girl that I knew
Who'll be reckless, just enough
Who'll get hurt, but who learns how to toughen up
When she's bruised and gets used by a man who can't love
And then she'll get stuck
And be scared of the life that's inside her
Growing stronger each day 'til it finally reminds her
To fight just a little, to bring back the fire in her eyes
That's been gone, but used to be mine
Used to be mine
She is messy, but she's kind
She is lonely most of the time
She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie
She is gone, but she used to be mine
This cover's lyrics are different.

Marni Schamroth waitress is actually doing very well. I don't think Hamilton necessarily drains all the other Broadway shows.
Waitress sells well, though. And for the record, those shows are successful for a reason.
Marni Schamroth And what do you even mean by too successful.
Hamilton and Waitress were the only two shows last season to recoup their investments (therefore making them "hit shows").

YESSSS!!!!! ugh!!!! i've literally replayed that part alone so many times!! That - and the way she sings "when she's bruised and gets used" Ugh, i faint every time!!
RIGHT?!
the “used to be” before the really long mine really just gets me every. single. time.
What a incredible performance by Jessie Mueller.
Sara Bareilles, you composed one hell of a song and sing it brilliantly as does Jessie Mueller...........WOW!!
"Shes broken, but wont ask for help" -wow!
I showed this to my monolingual Vietnamese-speaking mother. She watched and cried without understanding a word of English. That just shows how talented Jessie is.
Lies
Tears. She captured the spirit of a hurt, and scared pregnant women and delivered it in a physical form. This is one of my favorite songs.
1:58...bone chilling.
the amount of times i've watched this is concerning
For me, as a guy, the amount of times I have rewound this on Bluetooth in the car says it all. Amazing performance in NYC. If I was dating someone I would take her.
Jenna Barnett More like the amount of times I've listened to this. I was introduced into this song by Annapantsu and then I kept listening and now I see this, I'm an emotional wreck and now this is my favorite song!
Relatable
Lol. Same here
Over and over.
watching and listening to jessie mueller gave me goosebumps!
Jessie‘s last „pie“ in this performance gets me every time. She‘s absolutely amazing.
Yes! It's so subtle and perfect, almost like she's tossing it off.
I feel bad cause I was too into Hamilton to notice this show until now. Now I'm obsessed with this too and I want to see it.
Imagine how I feel, I only just got here. 😅😭 I too was rather obsessed with Hamilton and this passed me by...
Same
"Toughen up When she's bruised and gets used by a man who cant love" ❤❤ goosebumps every time
Same!!!
I come back to this specific video time and time again throughout the year, every time I find myself sobbing.......I've never seen this level of embodiement of character anywhere else, and that voice 😩
I'm not crying you're crying
You're right. I am crying
I'm not crying I'm sobbing
I know I'm way behind. I just learned about Hamilton from my sister. I saw someone performing this on the Voice. I did not know anything about this song but I guess the singer was good enough to make me tear up.That got me so into this song that I got to this video.I've heard Sarah B sing but not Jessie Mueller.Wow...What a great performance and yes I'm drying my eyes before my daughter makes fun of me.
Alice Lolita someone chopping onions around here 😂
HOW DID YOU KNOW
01:58 the sift from anger to sadness mid verse is amazing
I like her version so much. It's like a combination of a musical and a southern music vibes!
The "start" at 1:34 has absolutely *perfect* placement. Bravo!
I'm 25 years old now, second born. For some reason, I'm seeing my mother in this song when she was 19 and pregnant with my brother (her first child)
She never felt loved all her childhood, her parents were physically, mentally and emotionally unavailable. They forced her to work as a maid to provide instead of studying at a very young age, 9 yrs old.
Her parents represent the lyrics "a man who can't love"
I felt my mother's raw emotion from Jessie's voice, her loneliness, inner wish to rewrite her dreams, her deep pain, the cuts she'll never forget, fear for the child inside her while getting a single hope to "fight a little", and recognizing back her identity as someone who once had a fire for a beautiful future.
Great story! Thanks for sharing.
The way she sings ‘lonely’ 2:58 just breaks my heart....
The bar every actor that ever plays this role will have to reach for!
Brava!
One of the most stunning performances I've ever seen. The way she sings that last "lonely" at the end will forever be in my soul.
Amazing.
Jessie Mueller wrecks me every friggin time!
People need to stop comparing Hamilton and Waitress...Pls...just appreciate the musical you are listening to at the moment...
Delta Melta Its called they went up against each other the same year
People aren't really comparing them, Hamilton was at the tony's the same year so Waitress was robbed of any award possibilities.
@@spider-swift Wow I totally forgot I posted this XD Fair enough
This is seriously the most emotional performance of She Used To Be Mine I’ve EVER seen, and I’ve seen Waitress live 4 times. Jesse Mueller is seriously a machine.
damnit, I hardly ever cry at music. I didn't even cry at the studio version, but all of the emotion in this..
just, damn.
XO
Brandy Wilburn good point!
There aren't words to describe what this song, on Jessie's voice (and Jeremy Jordan) makes me feel. ❤
One of my absolute favorite performances. Jessies control, emotion and passion in her performance captivates my soul. I just adore this performance.
Same it’s just so captivating!
I tried to sing this beautiful song and my friend played the piano, it’s not perfect but it would mean the world to me if you saw our version! 🤗❤️
Jessie absolutely floors me. That raw emotion. Chills.
i was at a state thespian competition and during the opening ceremony for critics choice, a small boy sang this song. it was absolutely gorgeous, and no words can describe how moved i felt. now i rarely ever cry, but after watching his performance i was bursting into tears. i’ve never listened to waitress and practically everyone who left the auditorium was in shambles. it was an absolutely stunning performance and had my troupe director wishing he was a student that went to our school. i really can’t wait to see where he gets when he’s older, hearing him sing was actually like hearing an angel. 💕
My favorite variation of this song
This is better than the recording, Jessie's voice AND emotional delivery are impeccable in this performance.
Jessie Mueller had some amazing vocals in the last half .. chills
Jessie's performance of She Used To Be Mine is the only one I've seen where I forget that I'm watching a performance. I don't see an actress belting an awesome 11 o'clock number. Her emotions and style choices reflect what Jenna is going through. She fully embodies Jenna from start to finish.
No matter how many times I hear this, it always gives me goosebumps
Incredible! My god, that girl can sing!!! Just beautiful.
I dont know this show, singer or song and I am absolutely bawling my eyes out and have watched 5 times.
I'm obsessed over how she sang "just a little". It's really like she's begging to herself to fight just a little
Just listening to this is something spectacular, but watching Jessie act it out is something else. Her emotions were so powerful. I loved it. Definitely underrated.
I think I account for at least 25,000 of the views on this...and I cry every time! Jessie Mueller wrecks my heart and I love it. Hope to get to NYC to see this on stage.
I get teary eyed every time😢every time
She is a beautiful singer. I love how I can feel the emotion. I like the part when she is singing and it almost pulls her back at 1:42 .
This song is, in this 55 yr old ladies opinion, a masterpiece. I cried in the cinema and each time I hear it. It’s complex in a way you might think someone as young a Billie can’t possibly understand but then you realize she is a genius.
My favorite performance of this song, so much emotion and rawness.
Damn woman. Amazing. ❤❤❤❤
she is lonely most of the time...omg the way she sang that
Omg... love this song after watching Luke Islam. Amazing voices. Beautiful song... love it.
I love the vocal breaks and disconnects of the 2nd girl singing!!! Love the texture of her voice! Kinda reminds me of Alanis Morisette ❤️
F*ing AMAZING from both ladies. Goosebumps.
This song always gives me the chills I love Sarah so much as a artist
No matter how many times I watch this performance I still cry it is just so powerful and emotional
when did I start crying
when did I get into a small ball curled up on the floor
Emily Berry this is the most relatable thing rn
JESSE MUELLERS PERFORMANCE GIVES ME CHILLS SHES SO TALENTED
I've been listening to this soundtrack for about five months now, I really hope it comes to the UK!
Normal Ken it’s in the uk now. Have you seen it
yes it is!!
SARA THANK YOU FOR WRITING THE MOST PERFECT AND BEAUTIFUL SONG..
I don't know why this didn't get a standing O. It was about as good as Cynthia Erivo, whom I adore!
I love this song. It's like a modern version of Les Miserables's I Dreamed a Dream with a touch of Jessie's country twang. It's such poetry.
absolute magic! thank you sarah and jessie. saw waitress today on broadway and it was marvelous...i cried a lot. :-)))
Sensational singers!! Incredibly honest , convincing in their performance
Very true!
I tried to sing this beautiful song and my friend played the piano, it’s not perfect but it would mean the world to me if you saw our version! 🤗❤️
Sara- GENIUS songwriter, fabulous voice! Jessie Mueller- Rip my heart out!!
AHHH IM OBSESSED
Wow... just wow!!! What a vocalist!! She hit me right in the gut.
Jessie Mueller really put absolutely everything into this unique & remarkable performance. I am so floored by her raw power of storytelling in just this song. 🤩 🙏
