They wanted her to pay in Apple pay cards and she didn't question the legitimacy of the call?.. How gullible do you have to be..
Yeah I've gotten some nasty calls from the CRA but they still prefer real Canadian dollars.
ANYONE that falls for this DESERVES to lose their money, every last nicle of it!
That's how all scams work, they can't make a real payment that can be traced obviously. They call a millions times, they will get that negative IQ person, and that's all they need is one, and 5k goes as far as 500k in India, it makes it worth it they can have a whole company making millions of calls and just get one dumb person.
Unfortunately a lot of elderly and immigrants do know the purpose of apple and google gift cards. Scammers even leverage these companies brand names I talked to a elder couple in my condo building who had been convinced that gift cards are used to make payments and in the event they get scammed google and apple will step in and refund them the money.
…$5,500.00 in Apple gift cards???…any sane person would be questioning what the heck is goin’ on? That individual must be a new comer to this country.

The public have to be more comfortable with the CRA. They will only communicate via My CRA account, or by mail, never calling you by phone. They also never make threatening collection calls.

The phone company's call there products smart phones they should come with a software to block theses scamers so cell phone carriers should demand a better phone to protect there customers
