I know the premise is to have a ratio of club speed to carry but ball speed is universally tracked more consistently/accurately on monitors. Suggest including it as part of your display as another reference point for people.
Should've read your comment before posting. lol
Agreed, but there's big variances in ball speed for different people based on strike and face angles. I use club speed because if the distance is below the ratio it will identify those strike, face, equipment, etc. issues.
That makes a lot of sense to me.@@GolfLiberty
i had the same thought on the 7 iron video. Trackman and Toptracer ranges don't give you clubhead speed, but do give ball speed and launch. I'd like to know whether i'm getting optimal distance based on ball speed.
Club head speed levels the playing field across all abilities though, ball speed doesn't. I can thin a ball faster than my best strike, where as the club speed would be the same.
Another great video. Spot on again like the 7 iron video. My avg drive with my TSR3 indoors on trackman is 241.5 yards carry, 96.7 mph CHS. This is 2.50 rounded off. This was a small sample during my fitting just 3 months ago.
great job matt! love the content and what you are doing now on your own! ive been on a driver journey this year, started the yr with around 98mph and up to 106, with just better technique and using the ground more. would love to see this explored more. Im starting speed and flexibility training soon, hoping to average 110 by the start of season, might be in touch for some swing tips, thanks again for staying in the golf youtube space, your one of the best.
The content has been top notch. Appreciate the effort and information.
Another great video. Especially appreciate your testing at different speeds which the majority of golfers can relate to. Would really like to see you review clubs at varying speeds. I’m looking to purchase new players distance irons in the new year after new models come out . I’m in the 80-82 mph 7 iron range. Keep up the great content.
Matt great to see you healthy and swinging like a machine as usual. One thing to add to these videos would be to include shaft specs at given swing speeds. That would give us a little more information to digest. We can benchmark flight path and resulting efficiencies v swing speed+shaft.
your golf swing is always great to watch Matty……keep up the good work with your channel 😊😊
Well done Matt. Congratulations on your new channel.
Excellent video your demonstrations an explanation is top notch thank you for sharing
Great video Matty boy. Love seeing more content from you, you are a natural on camera.
i tracked a lot of data this past summer, and found my swing was consistently between 85-90mph with a slightly lower (than average) ball flight, but relatively straight, I found that I carried right between 200-210 pretty reliably. As for hardware, I use a Taylormade RBZ Stage 2 9.5 degree driver. I also tried a ton of different balls, and found that I got the most distance from Callaway Super Softs, or Srixon Soft Feels. Any 3 piece ball that I played was about 15-20 yards shorter off the tee with that 85-90mph swing speed. The performance of the ball you play has a LOT to do matching your swing speed to a certain type of ball.
Man that video from yesterday blew up! Nicely done!
Excellent video. Love this kind of content. I’m in that 95mph bucket and was wondering if you recall the apex height for your testing. Thank you!
I believe about 90ft
Super video Matt! Loved it.
So much awesome info! Thanks Matt 😎
Just realized this is Matt…. Great content and best of luck with the channel.
Great video along with the 7 iron vid. Wondering what shaft you used for your 108 swing compared to your 120 swing?
I just wonder because I’m right in the middle of those speeds and play a cobra LTDx LS with ventus blue tr 6x. I know speed isn’t everything when you talk shaft selection (it’s timing and strike contact, etc). Just curious.
Great videos Matt!!
Love your content Matt!
Could you maybe make a video where you explained how you are able to hit up on the ball? It would be super cool to know what you do to achieve that launch angle!
Cheers!
I'm glad you decided to do this one Matt. Thanks. At what speed, roughly, do you think the ratio changes from 2.4 to 2.5?
Around 90 or so
Another great video! 🤙🏼🤙🏼
Very insightful!
The numbers work from what I can tell -- My driver swing speed is 92 and that comes out to roughly 220 carry and that is pretty much spot on when I play. Yup and as soon as I cracked 220 carry -- The R&A and USGA stepped and said nope 🤣
now we know who to blame!
Great video and some really nice speed in the club, i think i might try some speed training this winter :)
What foresight software is that?
FSX Pro
Amazing how you can adjust your club head speed so accurately. Something I need to learn.
Great video, thank you
I love these videos Matt! Such great content and functionally useful for everyone. Wondering if you applied a factor of 1.75x to ball speed...would that be equivalent? Just thinking that might be a a better factor since BS translates more consistently across all LMs? Just curious.
Prefer to use an input (club speed) versus output (ball speed) to identify what's going on
Gotcha. Understand the intent now. Thanks Matt! @@GolfLiberty
Mate - I wish I could ramp up to 120mph. As a 55YO golfer with a max of 105mph the stats that you have presented are awesome. I hope this video gets the likes it deserves! I would love to see you down in Australia as a tall bloke vs #RonChopper. Ron can hit a ball!
Due to back issues, I have the Cobra Radspeed XB (13.5 degree) in a ladies UST nanocore 5 wood shaft. Goes about 200 yds. Would you suggest this is max performance, or could I gain more, without using standard driver shaft?
Would you have a correlated distance for a 7i and how it translates to driver? For example, a 7i carry of 165 yards should be hitting driver 275 yards or something similar to know if we are losing potential/expected distance to work on those inefficiencies mentioned as we move from irons to driver?
😊shouldn't you include smash factor to determine efficiency of the strike to use it for this calculation?
Matt, again appreciate this vid; what difference would you anticipate with different flex shafts. I use “senior” flex with a swing speed around 85mph and get average drives of about 250. Just wondering. Thx
NO YOU DONT.
That's not possible unless you are counting about 50 yards of roll out....
Cool video. My driver swing speed hovers around that 100mph mark and I’ve seen similar carry distances to what you have. But of course that’s all dependent on optimal delivery. I just played a round yesterday with my best driving day all year. On average I was getting 271yd (total) drives on firm conditions.
Do you start the round at 95 and by hole 14 you are 105? It feels like that is what happens to me.
@@beng4647 absolutely- unless I’ve totally warmed up before the round. I tend to ease into it. Being a 14HDCP, I’ll may start out with a bogey or double before I settle in.
YOU ARENT AVERAGING 271 CHUM, STOP THIS BULL SHITE.
@@AlastairBarker A woman could average 270.
He said total distance, not carry distance. Sit down and take a breath @@AlastairBarker
2.4 x SS is the number that was commonly referenced couple decades ago (when I was into this), and what I saw as realistic in real world playing. However, there have been some improvements in ball and club technology since then and 2.5 is possible at higher SS. But one thing stays the same and that is you have to center-face it and have good launch conditions to get anything close to optimal.
Matt.. exactly the yds per mph I use for a reasonably fit 7i shaft.
Very helpful, but like other commenter, I understand why club speed is superior, but most of us have only ball speed LM and I was hoping to get those inferences.
What do you think the spread should be between 7 iron and driver? I can swing my 7 iron 90mph, but my driver is only at 103-105.
love that you're back on doing videos! so my 7 iron vs. driver is strange. my 7 iron clubhead speed is 82mph, and I get ball speeds that are 104-112 mph. and your carry distance quick calc is spot on. but my driver clubhead speed is only 93-96 mph, with ball speeds in the 130-142 mph range. does that make any sense?
Seems about right yes
Seems like a gap of 10-15 is a bit low. LPGA and PGA gap is more like 20-25. Do you think you swing a 3/5w same speed as a driver? Less/more?
I’d expect it a little closer to 100 with driver for 82 7i speed. My 7i is 75 and I’m 88-92 with driver.
@@leospaceman2976 I finally looked at my 5 wood. I swing that at 87-88 mph, 190-195 carry. So basically, 5 mph slower than my driver. I really do think there’s a leak somewhere there, but curious if you all have that small a difference.
@@TheEugenelee13 we’re similar speeds (chs & ball). I’m 95+ w driver, 90+ w woods, 78-80 w 7i, & 70 w UW.
These are “comfort”/playing speeds. I think I can go a little quicker, but it’s not sustainable for every shot.
can you have lessons on how to increase club head speed for an average golfer
Good to know my technique is of by quite a bit my club head speed with driver is usually between 90-93 mph and the max carry I every get with my driver is about 200 sometimes it’s only 190
There's also a chart from ping that shows what your spin and launch should ideally be at any given ballspeed, for both driver and 7 iron. It's also color coded to show what distance you can expect at optimized numbers.
Do you find those charts to be similar to what you see yourself Matt?
yup they're pretty good, the iron chart may have spin a bit higher than needed but generally a good guide
@@GolfLiberty Just checked them and misremeberd a bit. The 7 iron chart was for stopping power fitting, although it did have a distance guide as well. See what you mean by spin, although that sort is loft dependent in terms of set composition of course. Interestingly I saw a Rahm range session recently and he hits his 7 iron consistently over 7000 rpm spin. So many say it should be lower, but he's done pretty well with it.
Under the 233 number is another number with a plus/minus adjustment. What does that smaller number represent?
Hats of to the pros in managing clubhead speed. The difference in distance between the various speeds is huge.
For a high handicapper using a 11 degree driver, I presume the distances @ lower club head speeds would be a fraction lower than a 9 degree lofted driver?
Which club head speed should have my driver when my i7 is 82mph max?
Nice video
Gobsmacked!
How can you call your speed and then hit that exactly?
How do you just casually increase clubhead speed and still make perfect contact on the ball?
Hey Matt thank you for the video. Where would you recommend the average guy get fitted in Canada?
Hey Matt, what is the shortest driver carry you have seen from a scratch handicapper? Like 250 yards?
240
THEY AINT OFF SCRATCH COS THEY ONLY HIT IT 220, THEY SCORE ROUND IN ROUND OUT, FFS NO ON HAS GOTTA CLUE.
Does anyone know What driving range is that from?
Zx5 mk2 ls? Just curious
Does anyone have a hand speed to club head speed ratio. I m using Blast Motion.
I have average 114-115 mph club head speed with driver but don’t carry it far enough because I tend to have a slightly negative or about 0.5 attack angle at impact which kills carry but good rollout.
Me too bro
YOU DONT AVERAGE 114 FFS
@@AlastairBarker FFS? Driver club head speed? Yes I do, sorry been athletic my whole life. Don’t care if you don’t believe me. The moral of my post was the attack angle being bad which robs me of yards. Could go faster if I swung stupid and didn’t care about results
@@AlastairBarker 188kph Alistair baker suck that
Wow, good swing bub.
Do you have a video to help pick speed up
coming out tomorrow
I tried with my launcher monitor and my ratio is more like 2.0, I guess it varies per person and set up
103 swing. 149mph ball speed. 245-250 carry in winter if I’m lucky.
I feel ya brotha winter golf is a whole different game
My driver swing is 95mph and I only carry 210, my spin is usually 3000+. Would getting that spin down get me closer to the target 230 carry?
Should add launch angle is usually 13-16 degrees.
yes less spin would help a lot
@@GolfLiberty What would be the best/easiest way to reduce spin without a full blow fitting...? Thanks.
Matt is a fitter, coach and instructor …..3 persons in one ….sounds like ? You guessed it 🎉
Why does the color of the tee change just before you're about to start your backswing. 😀
You should host a show on the golf channel.
Yeah. The guy swings so smooth and effortlessly
I think my launch monitor is whack at my local store. 296 carry. 2400.
Ball speed. 162 lmao. Checked on a PRGR...177mph.
I've been playing 6months I guessed distance =2.4x club speed because I launch 15-17 degrees with 130mph ball speed which carries 210-220 and judging by ball speed my club speedb(which isn't measured on trackman at the range I go to) is 88-90mph.
This is very good and very bad news. What this is telling me is with my current swing I'm hitting it about as good as I can. but to hit it further I need to increase my club speed?
That's the bad news as I'm in my late 50s and don't envisage 100mph anytime soon.
YOU NEED TO LEARN HOW TO SCORE DISTANCE IS ALL EGO, I COULD BEAT YOU WHEN I AM 150 YARDS BEHIND YOU.
@@AlastairBarker
Sorry I Didn't mention that I can putt better than you and can stick the ball to under 10feet from anything under 60 yards
You still think you'd beat me giving me the strokes relative to our handicaps? because I don't!
@@AlastairBarker Moronic troll....
Nice. Nice. Nice.
I don't understand how you just breathe on the ball and it goes 200. I have to swing pretty hard to get out to 200, and then make good contact to go 240.
Mind boggling how a 108 club head speed looks like an easy 7 iron swing.
Smooth at any speed looks slower because you dont see any jerky acceleration which we process as fast.
It's also about where the speed is produced. You can have someone with bad tempo swinging faster in the first part of the down swing but then stay the same or lose speed when they actually hit the ball and that swing would look a lot faster. An optimized smooth swing is fastest at the bottom just before hitting the ball.
@@krusher74thats my full speed and i have to Step on it big time
Club head speed and swing speed are different. Swing speed is a rotational speed whereas club head speed is dependent on shaft length. For the same swing speed, a driver will give a faster club head speed than a 7 iron because the shaft is longer
@@michaelfreeman1634yes always looking for a longer lever
i like how he smooths it 106 and im giving it my all to get 99
At 71 years of age and 5'2" I am perfectly happy with driving the ball 175 to 200 yards with decent accuracy. Otherwise, I do not care about any of the other particulars...I will just keep playing in the high 70s to the low/mid 80s from the 5500 yards tees and be pleased. My wife and I walk 18 holes 3-5 times a week...great exercise-readies us for the 6-10 mile hikes we undertake while on vacation. For folks who perseverate over everything in this regard-have at it.
Average clubhead speed 127mph, average distance 337yards (309m for me though on metric). Still using a TSi3 9.0 - down to 8.25 with a Ventus Blue 6x Shaft... I do find some odd effects with spin / peak height start to occur when I hit faster to generate equivalence distance increases, likely require a lower loft driver / different if I was to try and do that rather than use my gamer.
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA WAKE UP SONNY.
@@AlastairBarker ?
Riiiiiight.... the average tour golfer swing speed is 115 mph, the top speed, Cameron Champ is 124.7, Rory averages 122... you need to snap out of it or get a more accurate launch monitor.... you're dreaming...
Matt just what the doctor ordered thanks
I don't understand how the mid-80s swing looks so slow. I have to absolutely swing out of my shoes and even on centred strikes can't carry it beyond 190. Tried all techniques for a year now. Just don't understand how you barely touch it and it says 199 carry.
He’s likely delivering it more efficiently than you. It would be worth it to get your driver swing on a launch monitor if you haven’t already
Went through the same exact thing. For me, the issue was I was not using my legs at all. Was swinging all arms and shoulders. If you have the same issue, just ensure you’re getting your weight shifting back into your right heel, and then shifting to your left outside foot. Once i did that, i barely had to swing and my distances and club speed went way up. And as someone who lifts weights a lot, i was trying to muscle the shot. Let your body and club be a whip.
Do you think you’re releasing the club properly? This has helped me gain speed w/o more effort
@craigrapp9469 Thanks for the suggestion. Been trying all that for a long time now. I think the answer is I'm just weak. Women don't drive it as far as men (on average) so logically there will be men who are just below average of what a man can achieve.
@atxrich hi, yes been on a launch monitor. I've seen a couple of different pros and all they can advise is to "swing faster". But I physically can't swing any faster. Just below average in that department. Unfortunately youtube golf doesn't acknowledge these people exist!
The most casual 108 club head speed
it's disheartening to see Matt chipping his driver and getting my absolute maxed out swing speed
i'm always Toey, that doesn't sound right, but you know what i mean?

Your 108 looks like my 95
What the heck
So sad that all out effort I can only get 104mph and you are hitting what looks like a chip shot thats 108mph lol
