  • In Part 2 of this 1981 documentary, NFPA® recounts the major fire at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. Investigation results had a significant impact on code revisions in the hotel/motel industry, construction, fire sprinkler systems, and more.
The MGM Grand Hotel was a “super” hotel with a casino, 2000 guest rooms, and convention space. On November 21, 1980, a massive fire occurred, and 85 people perished. Hear stories from survivors, first responders, and others, as they share their experiences from that historic fire event.

@puddlepuppy82 Iam so sorry for your lose in the fire. I was 15 years old and staying in the hotel with my mom when the fire broke out. A horrible experience for us and everyone else in the fire and the heartbreaking loss of life. To this day I still have a tremendous fear of fire. Have been back to the hotel once since it became Ballys , but dont think I could ever stay in that hotel again. We usually stay at the Mandalay when in Vegas.

Hard to believe I go in Bally's all the time and realize that a major fire happened there 30 years ago...

Thanks for posting this. Informative, and the very old look gave it a rather eerie feel.

if i am about to burn alive, i will gulp up as much smoke as possible so that i am dead before the flames hit. i would also jump from a window, rather than burn. all awful ways to go.

Hard to believe they got it back up and running in less than a year. I can't even imagine how you clean out all that smoke damage.

Unfortunately, it usually takes a tragedy to change the fire codes. For example, schools became safer after the Our Lady of the Angels fire in Chicago and night clubs should have become safer after the Cocoanut Grove fire in Boston. Unfortunately, the lessons learned are often all-too-quickly forgotten, as the Station nightclub fire will attest.

pmk4343, the current MGM Grand is green, and is located at the corner of Las Vegas Blvd (the strip) and Tropicana Ave. When this fire occurred, the MGM was the hotel which is now Bally's, located in the central part of the strip. The MGM you see today is not the same hotel where the fire occurred. If you look at Bally's, you will see that very little of the main architecture has changed, but you would never know this tragic event occurred there.

@@gregorysweer9951 It was the Marina Hotel. I believe the very west wing of the current MGM Grand building is actually the original Marina Hotel tower.

The older parts have the same feel that Incendio (1974) had.

I think the stairwells are now pressurized to keep smoke out.

I am researching this fire and it is because of what happened at the MGM that those types of safety systems were developed. There were multiple studies on how to prevent smoke to move through elevator shafts as well.

Excellent documentary! I have always been fascinated by this fire and to come across this video was great. I'm wondering it anyone knows what happened to the Zigfried room at the casino. Did it burn or just suffer smoke damage and another question is the Zigfried room still there under a new name? I'm just curious because I remember watching the Dean Martin celebrity roasts filmed there.

While this is very sad I liked the music at the end so much I Shazamed it and added it to my phone, but wow thank god fire codes have improved because if that were to happen today sprinkler systems would have it put out at the source and 85 people wouldn’t have lost their lives

And above all if you are in a large high rise, no matter what they say do NOT remain where you are. Make every effort to get out of the building. Firefighters will never get up to you in time and you will die in your room/apartment. The reason why they tell people to stay in place is because the firefighters want the stairwells clear in case they need to go up - totally ridiculous.

I agree. Look at the world trade buildings. Some waited in their rooms below the impacted area for help that would never come. Many could have left via stairs instead of waiting around untill sadly, the collapse.
