It's been literally 40 years since the fire rest in peace to the people who didn't make it my condolences goes out to the friends and family members who lost the people they love 1980 2020 40 years later
I worked there as a glass man in 1980 in the two showrooms. Glass man rearranges cocktail glasses on trays ready to pour. Got off at 5:00 am went home to sleep, my cousin wakes me up, hey your hotel's on fire WHAT?
Different MGM Grand. The original one, where they had the fire, was built in 1973, reopened after the fire in late 1981, and sold to Bally's in 1986. MGM later returned to Vegas, and opened the current MGM Grand on the site of the Marina Hotel and former Tropicana golf course.
5:53 Says it all. I know hindsight is 20/20, but this is why you always need some government oversight to set the basic standards because corporations will always save money wherever they can.
I lived there I got layed off a week prior to the disaster. Our neighbor lived across the street was a fire fighter which said the gamblers that choice to stay was burned on the tables.he said they basically peeled off the tables.I watched not to far away and people were falling to thier death. They had sheets going down and curtains. I am sorry to put this out but it was horrible. Prayers

How does this even happen…? No one noticed a fire in the restaurant on the first floor. Insanity. A restaurant with no fire extinguisher?! 85 lives lost.
This is why every hotel room has it's own fire alarm and sprinkler today
This was extremely unfortunate, but it set the standards for hotels safety procedures making Las Vegas hotels among the most stringent in the world.
To this day, this remains the deadliest disaster in Nevada history
Wow. It’s been that long. Thank you for this video.

The restaurant wasn’t open at the time. The man who noticed the fire tried to fight it with an extinguisher but it was too strong.
