Something I'd like to add is this video focused on SOLO lanes, duo lanes are a very different story. I may cover these at another point, the same principles apply but there are many more variables at play in duo lanes. Enjoy!
Yeah i’d love to know your thoughts on duo lanes! I’m an Archon 6 player and my gut feeling tells me freezing isn’t great against heroes with good engage. Played against a Bebop and Mirage in a pub and got rolled under tower. Eventually won by basically abandoning wave and roaming/jungling.
2:45 I’m confused, why would it be hard to deny for him if pushing waves means he would be closer to his minions? Shouldn’t pushing the wave to the opponents tower be an advantage because of that/disregarding the cover thing u said in the vid ? Or is this specifically bad for this matchup since mirage can output pressure indernus
@@TeckNoobie I think as a duo lane you freeze lane only when you have to, because duo lanes need to take advantage so one can go gank or smth, whereas solo lane you don't really win much by pushing the lane because you won't have time anyway to go gank and will lose creeps in te process. So btter play safe in solo lane, and aggro in duo. IMO. But im init 1 :p
So. Here is my problem. I watched this the other day and have tried to employ it. First game, my lane didn't have barrels, no such easy to use cover close to the last hits. Enemy just ran up on me, harassed me to death if I tried to peek to last hit. Second game, I had the barrels. Shiv literally just walked up behind them next to me to fight me and did more damage than me in the exchange, even when I heavy meleed and hit him with all my skills when he came up. This method doesn't work.
Hopefully you didnt forget to mention that if you freeze the lane for more than 5 minutes your character gets a brain freeze which grants you a 50% chance to miss any shot you were bound to hit

I'll second this one. I think that'd be really helpful. I played as pocket vs mirage the other week, and I was just really confused about why my health was getting melted so quickly.
Another important point is this strategy minimises variance. You know you won't die under your guardian and you'll be roughly even in souls and you place the onus on your opponent to go for plays. Usually strats like this favour scalers like Pocket, so you know that if the freeze continues, you eventually win. So in 2/3 scenarios you win, with the only losing scenario being that your opponent makes a successful play that you can't react to because you're under your guardian. If they fail their play, then it's also a win for you.

great video, thank for create educational content ! but i have a question. freeze the lane near to ur tower seem ultra strong. why everyone dosent freeze the lane ? maybe i have not reallu understand why we should freeze a lane or when to do it.
One thing I've seen (and tried myself) for McGinnis is to use your wall to stall your first wave of creeps. It means the first wave clashes on your side of the bridge. No idea how good this actually is, but I feel really smart whenever I do it.
Thx, this is just the intel I needed. This is why I got clapped as a Mo against a Wraith on solo lane today. I pushed the wave, they froze it, got a 2k lead and then absolutely beat the crap out of me. Now I know better.
I've done that as wraith to a really aggressive Mo a few days ago, in my mind I was just playing defensive and trying to deny what I can without taking risk and ended up with a big lead and killing him twice in lane cause he went for plays. I didn't know I was freezing the lane honestly lol
Awesome vid, learned a lot! Suggestion: if you put deadlock in the title it might get more average clicks, im rooting for u to become #1 deadlock streamer
Are there any matchups as haze where being this close to your guardian would be a bad idea? I only play haze and I feel like there’s a couple games I’ve had where being close to my stairs actually felt worse. Everyone swears up and down so it must be a decent idea but what is the end game of freezing as haze? Are you trying to get them to leave like the Infernus? Because I feel like a lot of characters can pressure me even behind cover at stairs
how would you freeze the lane against molly characters? for example, paradox can just molly you out behind the crate and hit u with a carbine while u are dodging it
This is probably the most helpful video I've watched for Deadlock. Used this in a match today as Haze and it really clicked, freezing won me the lane and it was very clear how exactly it did. For Haze, that 2.2k soul T2 Fixation upgrade is the bare minimum requirement for her to have any kill potential, and it's a few more thousand souls after that until she can properly pressure tower. Having the flow of the lane in my hands made scaling gradually and safely really easy, and my enemy lane mate didn't really know how to respond. Great stuff! Thank you for making this video.
This is a great video! One of the things I struggle with is when I'm in a neutral lane, where I or my opponent are playing passively, how do I then transition into the mid game where I get active on the map? It's hard to not feel like the Mirage in the 2nd example, where the instant I leave, my lane opponent gets a big advantage on my tower and taking objectives. A video on this transition with examples would be really helpful!
What works for me is crashing my wave to roam or farm. When mid-game is coming up I’ll be more aggressive to keep crashing wave and destroy their guardian and make sure the enemy backs up. Most players will back up at that point and play at walker and the enemy can’t push up as easily anymore with the shorter zipline
Also whenever your enemy does something, react to it. Like say they go gank, if you can’t respond and assist your teammates then punish the enemy either crashing waves or stealing farm. If the enemy is unsuccessful in a roam then you have just gotten yourself a lead while they were gone
I also tend to get stuck into infinite laning phase in my low elo matchups. I think the important thing to realize is that Guardian resist regularly drops until 8min, so at this point you should try to add more pressure and get Guardian. Once you get Guardian it gives you more room to roam before going back to defend your guardian
I’d like to know how you would act when facing Paradox or Lady Geist, as both have grenade-like skills that can force opponents out of cover. I’m also curious about how this can be implemented in a duo lane. Looking forward to your video!
Are there any solo-lane matchups that you wouldn't want to do this against? I know it heavily depends on which character you're playing as well. But let's say that instead of Pocket vs. Mirage, it was Pocket vs Geist or Viscous. Hiding behind cover like this won't save you since you can be pressured by AOE abilities. So is freezing a good play against these types of matchups or would you be better off keeping the lane neutral/shoved?
watched this video, then immediately played a game right after. I main Dynamo and i was solo against Yamato. Her aim was op and every time i showed my face i would lose 50% hp. I tried freezing the wave and ended up 12k vs her 7k by the time we started doing other lanes. Thanks!
I'm curious what a bad matchup for Mirage is in your opinion. Seems like he's pretty oppressive just from his raw spirit damage and I can't think of anything that necessarily counters that. Maybe Talon just to poke at long range? But that's more just fighting spirit burst damage with spirit burst damage than it is countering anything in particular
Is there any value in trying to counter Lane Freezing by using your Troopers as cover to attempt to get the opponent to kill them earlier than they’d like to?
As a McGinnis main, would you say sometimes hard pushing wave could be beneficial if I’m doing a decent amount of obj damage even if I can’t pressure the player themselves?
As someone who played a lot of league, I super appreciate this video. No one is talking about wave management, and it's super important. Question: If I'm infernus, how do I break the freeze? Just last hit as well? Even if a small difference, your minions should arrive first, so him pushing is really what is maintaining your freeze, right?
Theres not that much you can do to get the lane un-frozen, but you can like Deathy says try to use the space of the lane typ do other stuff such as box/neutral farming. In dota you could attack your own creeps from 50% hp to make them die faster but so far not in deadlock
so i see in the lane you were prioterizing harras over denying , is this always the case or only on mirage ? when should you focus on deny and when on harras ?
Thank you for this, I really love this game and I currently sit at Ascendant V but I've been in a rut where I feel like there is such a huge skill gap between myself and people at Eternus level that I want to overcome. I've been wondering how to freeze the right way because I feel like that is part of what loses me a lot of solo lanes
Don't shoot the creeps at all unless they are dying, and do not let the wave crash into your tower unless there is another one coming. It requires some practice for sure!
Do you have a tip for a hard matchup that does have AoE damage spells to harass me under tower, while I freeze the wave? Like, you showed your matchup vs Mirage, sitting behind the barrels. But what if it's a Lady Geist that constantly spams her 1 on me? It might be a skill issue, but I find it very difficult in those cases to move around to avoid their spells and at the same time last hit the troopers and avoid getting hit by the opponent's normal attacks.
This is a great video, but in both cases, you demonstrated this being done against mirage who does not have corner poke. What about champs with grenades? They can continue poking you under tower until they can dive you. Freezing in that situation is not nearly as free. What do you do? Hope one of your teammates is willing to swap lanes?
This “freezing the lane concept” is basically the exact same strategy as normal laning in dota . You almost always want to keep the wave close to your tower
But in Deadlock, you often want the opposite as well. If I understand correctly, "freezing the wave" is a concept for advanced players precisely because in the majority of matchups pushing the wave under the opponent's tower is better. I'm bad at the game though, just trying to repeat what the pro's say.
Yes in deadlock pushing is better, unless you know that you need to freeze. I do this on Haze all the time and it works great, she has very little pressure I can't trade well with my opponents, and I simply freeze the lane, last hit, and use moments to make a pressure play with a sleep dagger. But on vindicta for example, because her gun is so strong you can outshoot most opponents, and her gank potential is great with the stake and the flight, so it's better to push the lane and see if you can gank or take boxes
This is why I prefer Smites laning phase over all over MOBAs personally. Pushing the wave starts to starve the enemy. If the tower hits a creep, it reduces its value to 1/4 of what it should be worth if you killed it without tower assist. So 100 gold becomes 25 gold for every creep the tower hits, and you can gain advantage off being aggressive. The balance for it is that early game creep waves CHUNK you and they also target the enemy player if you damage one of their friendly players so you have to balance bursting them and the enemy while having good spacing. There’s no deny mechanic in that game but there is a +gold incentive if you get the last hit. You also get gold and exp if the creeps just die in your vicinity without you even touching them, but it’s reduced. Also towers will automatically switch targets to an enemy player if you damage a friendly player under its radius. I don’t really like the parry mechanic on tower incentive to dive and would like towers/walkers to beam players down if you’re trying to defend it but taking poke. It’s kinda dumb how one little creep can face tank an entire walkers beam by the time it dies if you have someone like Wraith melting it, and the creep is like 1/3 hp still
thanks for this i've been curious on what's the mindset for high elo players when it comes to freezing since its a fairly common concept for other mobas as well
It's funny and interesting cause as an FPS gamer with no MOBA experience this is something I started doing without understand the concept properly whenever I face someone aggressive in lane and as I'm also confident I can deny their souls pretty consistently I usually outfarm them and win my lane.
I watched the stream (Hell I was the one that suggested this thing abt watching Infernus/Pocket perspective!) but I'm still watching the video, because repetition is important to distill information. PS: Still waiting for a Haze guide :)
Is there a way to break the freeze or r u out of luck once the freeze happens Edit: the more I think abt this the more I’m lost. It looked like the infernus tried to push the lane in to mirage to make it bounce back to him but that didn’t happen. Maybe it’s due to the lack of HP and power to do so bc he’s an infernus?
That's interesting. In other mobas, you break freezes by forcing minions under tower. With how fast minions arrive via the zip line, it looks like the waves don't bounce or stack in the same way.
Does the wave just not bounce in this game like in league? I guess it just doesn't because of the last hit mechanic but it's a bit strange that this is able to be done under tower
If you freeze lane, then you can't use the TPs to roam and help your opposite solo lane. So freezing is only good if you're basically playing someone that can't rotate for a strong gank like lash that he metnions roaming to the duo lane but neglects the TP can be really nice if your wave is passed the half way mark you can TP and get MS on tp to clear camps and tp or zip line boost back to line to catch the wave after he is done pushing it back
this is just like dota and league all over again when we were new and learning how to control lanes, when to push and when to freeze the wave. I'm surprised this is mostly news as league and dota has been out for more than 10years at this point.
Really depends, it's most advantageous when you are either in a very winning matchup, or very losing matchup. if the matchup is 50-50, freezing lane is less beneficial overall
for the second clip, could this be done on lane bullies that can attack from unusual angles? like for example, vindicta, GT. if so, how would you do it? whenever i lane against those character it feels as if i suffocate in lane till i die
Yeah it can be, although those characters are better at harassing under tower than most. You have to play around with different cover - it is harder against them though
Deadlock is the first moba I’ve taken seriously, so the macro is all new to me. Is the lane unplayable for the Infernus because you’re able to apply constant pressure because you’re waiting for last hits only?
The matchup is incredibly Mirage favored, because Mirage is just the best laner in the game pretty much. Since that's the case, if Infernus has to play forward, it's very easy for me to fight him, and very hard for him to fight me. In the video, you see anytime he moves forward, he takes a ton of damage. That's what makes it even more unplayable
This way of playing relies on an your opponent pushing into you and up to tower, the alternative being a stale lane without much interaction beyond trying to keep each other off boxes. This is anti fun and it would be nice to see more content dedicated to the eradication of gameplay like this as it spurns the shooter half of deadlock in favor of classic moba techniques, a real wasted opportunity by valve as I currently don't see much counter play to what's being demonstrated, thus driving away potential new players who migrated from the mostly soulless fps genre atm.
cause of my dota play ive been cutting the wave and frezzing it as much as possible since they fixed the whole being able to shoot the troopers off the rail. My day one indead lock was seeing what translates from dota and being able to shoot or cut the trooper wave was big. then suddenly you couldnt shoot them down for a few weeks.
Any other hero wouldnt be able to keep the enemy out of the lane like this. Just mirage being MEGA broken. You literally just need to hit 1 shot every few seconds to do significant harrass damage. And theres barely anyone who can lane against that really, whether you froze or not
@@FateBringsMe2U Entirely possible. It felt nice when I tried her in hero labs (barring my rough aim) At least that has a notable cooldown until it’s maxed out though.
If freezing the wave is good when the match up IS NOT in your favor, but it's also good when it IS in your favor, why wouldn't you freeze the wave always?
in a neutral matchup, which is most of the time, its more advantageous to be pushing waves. until youre significantly behind on souls and pushing becomes a death trap, then you freeze in an otherwise neutral matchup
13:45 very very complacent move to try to zip in line of sight of your lane like you're not going to get punished for it. with 700 souls bag. Ascendant my ass
Would you say this is applicable in duo lanes as well? I can see the case for it if your duo ganks or is dead but seems difficult to pull off on EU coms
I do freez sometimes in ascendant. This video helps me a Lot tho. I struggle sometimes than with the right cover when they play aggro under my tower. But theses barrels are like cheating If you crouching. Thx
I mean, i don't get the point of freezing the lane for Guardians... 19:41 The mirage has the same amount of souls than you, and your tower is now half hp, i would say thats still losing even tho you haven't died for a bad matchup against mirage. Freezing the Wave for Walkers tho it is, the enemy would be easily gankable and its super risky to push in that deep that early
Same amount of farm for a relatively unfavorable matchup while still keeping the guardian alive pre-8 mins sounds like a win tho. Any earlier point if he pushed and died (higher likely as he mentions in the video), it could have easily snowballed into an unplayable lane/unfavorable situation later on (guardian would take way more damage with the player dead anyway as opposed to playing passively and freezing wave).
imo if the tower hits your minion you should get less money from the kill. i hate this defensive playstyle getting rewarded.... especially against bebop 180 hook into tower
but the wave in all those cases is literally not freezing, the wave equilibrium is shifted to your side so it will always be a slow push if the enemy only last hits as well? this literally has nothing to do with freezing the enemy is just bad and doesnt recognize that he perma fucks the wavestate by hitting creeps
Something I'd like to add is this video focused on SOLO lanes, duo lanes are a very different story. I may cover these at another point, the same principles apply but there are many more variables at play in duo lanes. Enjoy!

12:14 i see Infernus got impatient and fucking up here, what is the correct way for him to break the freeze?
Thank you for this, I really love this game and I currently sit at Ascendant V but I've been in a rut where I feel like there is such a huge skill gap between myself and people at Eternus level that I want to overcome. I've been wondering how to freeze the right way because I feel like that is part of what loses me a lot of solo lanes
How do I prevent a freeze turning into a slow push to the other side?
Don't shoot the creeps at all unless they are dying, and do not let the wave crash into your tower unless there is another one coming. It requires some practice for sure!
And don't let creeps shoot you
Do you have a tip for a hard matchup that does have AoE damage spells to harass me under tower, while I freeze the wave?
It’s kinda dumb how one little creep can face tank an entire walkers beam by the time it dies if you have someone like Wraith melting it, and the creep is like 1/3 hp still
how do i know which hero counters which? like u explained, mirage is good for infernus or pocket is good against mirage. didnt know that.
Is there a way to make waves go backwards at that point, or are you basically screwed if you last hit too early?
Solo laning as dynamo against Mirage is so stuff. This freezing tactic might be clutch. Thank you
Did not know dapr (the infernus player) was playing this game. Was one of my favorite players to watch in the early Valorant days
Yeah he's very good!
it was cool that i was able to figure this out myself
thanks for this i've been curious on what's the mindset for high elo players when it comes to freezing since its a fairly common concept for other mobas as well
Is there characters where freezing the lane is a bad strat? Like Abrams for instance.
So what happened to keeping lanes pushed?
It's funny and interesting cause as an FPS gamer with no MOBA experience this is something I started doing without understand the concept properly whenever I face someone aggressive in lane and as I'm also confident I can deny their souls pretty consistently I usually outfarm them and win my lane.
I watched the stream (Hell I was the one that suggested this thing abt watching Infernus/Pocket perspective!) but I'm still watching the video, because repetition is important to distill information.
PS: Still waiting for a Haze guide :)
Is there a way to break the freeze or r u out of luck once the freeze happens
Edit: the more I think abt this the more I’m lost. It looked like the infernus tried to push the lane in to mirage to make it bounce back to him but that didn’t happen. Maybe it’s due to the lack of HP and power to do so bc he’s an infernus?
so when do i shove wave? it seems bad to almost ever push it early
When you want to gank or if you have a good character for harrassing under tower
That's interesting. In other mobas, you break freezes by forcing minions under tower. With how fast minions arrive via the zip line, it looks like the waves don't bounce or stack in the same way.
they behave exactly opposite to minions in league, creeps naturally push harder if they extend into enemy territory
Pretty handy tips, thanks king
Does the wave just not bounce in this game like in league? I guess it just doesn't because of the last hit mechanic but it's a bit strange that this is able to be done under tower
If you freeze lane, then you can't use the TPs to roam and help your opposite solo lane. So freezing is only good if you're basically playing someone that can't rotate for a strong gank like lash that he metnions roaming to the duo lane but neglects the TP can be really nice if your wave is passed the half way mark you can TP and get MS on tp to clear camps and tp or zip line boost back to line to catch the wave after he is done pushing it back
If someone is freezing the lane on me how do I stop them?
holy maybe all the fps gamers will learn wave management if you keep this up
this is never gonna happen 😅
this is just like dota and league all over again when we were new and learning how to control lanes, when to push and when to freeze the wave.
I'm surprised this is mostly news as league and dota has been out for more than 10years at this point.
I wish they had the mechanic in this game where loose gold from creeps if they are hit by the guardian.
How about Mirage vs. McGinnis lane?
"He basically farmed the jungle for me." Brutal 😆
Thanks for the guide. Is freezing lane more advantageous for characters with strong poke/DoT?
@ thanks for the response! Why is mirage the best laner right now?
@@chiefinasmith djinn mark and scarab are good at poking and tornado is good at all in
my goat . ty for the tips
Why is the lane being on your tower advantageous for not letting tbr other team put on pressure? That's confusing to me
This way of playing relies on an your opponent pushing into you and up to tower, the alternative being a stale lane without much interaction beyond trying to keep each other off boxes.
Literally happens to me all the time in comp. I could never figure out why i loose early game as infernus but now i know.....
Why do the waves meet at your steps and not mid?
Opponent's lane is more pushed so opponent's creeps have a longer zipline
Any other hero wouldnt be able to keep the enemy out of the lane like this. Just mirage being MEGA broken. You literally just need to hit 1 shot every few seconds to do significant harrass damage. And theres barely anyone who can lane against that really, whether you froze or not
Didn't think about it but he kinda has headshot booster but with less cooldown and it doesn't require headshots, huh?
@@jonathanrussell6525And he can just also buy headshot booster to stack on top of that. Such a lane terror.
talon would like a word
I guarantee Holliday is going to be the same with their 3.
@@FateBringsMe2U Entirely possible. It felt nice when I tried her in hero labs (barring my rough aim)
At least that has a notable cooldown until it’s maxed out though.
Such an important video
If freezing the wave is good when the match up IS NOT in your favor, but it's also good when it IS in your favor, why wouldn't you freeze the wave always?
in a neutral matchup, which is most of the time, its more advantageous to be pushing waves. until youre significantly behind on souls and pushing becomes a death trap, then you freeze in an otherwise neutral matchup
If you've got the matchup in your favor then odds are you can get a pick on the enemy if you push out a bit.
Whenever I try to keep the wave at my tower I still get pushed and die, and they take my tower...
13:45 very very complacent move to try to zip in line of sight of your lane like you're not going to get punished for it. with 700 souls bag. Ascendant my ass
this is good because it makes it so the enemies troopers despawn with no soul spawn
I wonder if that’s actually dapr as infernus he was actually a Valorant world champion under SEN with Tenz
Deadlock players have discovered farming under a tower, as a long time Dota 2 enjoyer it's kind of cute
Would you say this is applicable in duo lanes as well? I can see the case for it if your duo ganks or is dead but seems difficult to pull off on EU coms
Much harder to do in duo lanes, can be applicable but many more variables to control
i play in SA so i've gotten my ass kicked by cartoon and some of his teammates a whole bunch of times so it's great to see them on here :)
I do freez sometimes in ascendant. This video helps me a Lot tho. I struggle sometimes than with the right cover when they play aggro under my tower. But theses barrels are like cheating If you crouching. Thx
Can we have another video going over how to play lash at higher mmr's plz :)
ngl i have been doing this because it's my DOTA2 habit since the old days
this video should be title "mirage is broken"
Nah lol, you could do exactly what he did as mirage as most of the roster lol

Freeze dont work into makginis, she can block enemy wave under tower and get double wave or something

I wonder if we'll see a natural state of the game occur where duos try to prio and solos aim to freeze.
Good video deathy but the ending feels a bit abrupt. A quick outro would've been better. Thanks for the tips, defs gonna try this out.
but the wave in all those cases is literally not freezing, the wave equilibrium is shifted to your side so it will always be a slow push if the enemy only last hits as well? this literally has nothing to do with freezing the enemy is just bad and doesnt recognize that he perma fucks the wavestate by hitting creeps
