    There's an option to create backup recordings that are -12 db lower than set gain. This can be handy to record internally and splice/edit in post the 2 versions of set gain files, and lowered gain backup files. to patch up those spots that may have clipped.

      Hi, that is true. The limitation though is that the Backup Recording is only possible for the X/Y capsule and not the XLR ports. I wish Zoom would have made it possible for all ports .🙈

      @@ChrisSpiegl Oh I wasn't aware of that, that's a bummer. I recently picked one up that needed a bit of repair for a good price exploring it a lot more lately.

      @@KarandeepJhand it’s still a great recorder for sure. Just has its limitations and it is a bit dated. 😅
      Hope you enjoy it for your recordings 👌.

      @@ChrisSpiegl would routing the headphones output into the capsule input allow for the backup recording though? Or would it compromise sound quality?

      @@tadohmusic That'd be a "backup" but certainly degraded in quality.

    I have had the H5 since late 2014 and still learning how to use it properly. LOL!

    Are you somehow aware about H6? Is it also does the limiter after it clipped (digitally) or it totally prevent the original sound from peaking? Because I have podcast recording session that once in a while, they were just bursting with loud laughter that would peak for certain period.

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  6 місяців тому +1

      I did use the H6 for a while, but that’s almost 10 years ago 😳. Not sure how they did the limiter at the time. But if you have something that is worth recovering, there are tools that can “de-clip” your recordings. One is iZotope RX10. But it’s expensive unless you find someone to do it for you who already has the license odor the program.

    Thank you Chris for making this video. I am just curious what made you choose the BETA57. Did you compare it with SM57? Thanks.

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  3 роки тому +1

      I chose the Beta 57 because I was looking at the SM58 type mics and then found the Beta 57 and 58.
      I found that in different comparisons they sounded similar enough for me to chose the one that is a bit "smaller".
      This is a factor that was pretty much only interesting to me because at the time I was still traveling a lot and carrying these around and even the round capsule cage of the 58 was too big for my liking.
      The SM57 is even smaller but does not fair well with handling noises from what I gathered.

    Is there a peak limiter in the H5?

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  3 роки тому +1

      I don't exactly know what you mean. There is a limiter in the H5 - and this video covers how it works as well as if it's good to use or not. But generally speaking, the limiter in the H5 is so bad it's basically not worth using.

    • @luckybrownmusic
      @luckybrownmusic 3 роки тому +1

      @@ChrisSpiegl a peak limiter automatically adjusts the input level in real time so you can literally grab and go and your recording will be fine since the input level is auto adjusted (you can leave it unattended without worrying your recording will clip). My Tascam has this feature but my more expensive Zoom H5 does not (it's still needs manually adjustment wheel) :(

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  3 роки тому +1

      @@luckybrownmusic that is correct. The Zoom H5 does not have the feature you are describing. Considering that the H5 was released about 7 years ago, I don’t find this a huge surprise. 😅
      I also would not buy the H5 - nor would I recommend it to people nowadays if they can avoids it. It’s really not that great a recorder any more.

      @@ChrisSpiegl I purchased mine for $169 it was mispriced at a local store. I use it for livestream by inputing signal from my mixer and the h5 mixes sound with the internal mic out to my camera. I should have done more research, but paid about a little less than half the retail price so not a total loss lol!

      @@luckybrownmusic Sounds good overall. Definitely an interesting setup and idea to do it this way. I guess a GoXLR mini or such may have been also a good option for something like you are doing but for now, I guess work with what you got and that's good. Happy streaming 🌸.
