Your video is the only video that is detailed and you talk about what each thing does and how it works-- what it is for etc. I haven't seen any other UA-cam video giving this much information for newbies like myself. If you are recording yourself playing and have control over everything else, you can set all your levels to not need a limiter, but if its more like recording a concert from the audience i would definitely use the limiter, as well as the -20 pad.

    • @faucast4948
      @faucast4948  Рік тому

      for transferring the recorded files to a computer, the usb port on the h5 is the older 2.0, so the transfer is pretty slow. I would always prefer a USB 3.0 card reader. But if you have to, just change the usb setting to "SD card reader" plug it in to the computer, and it should show up like a drive.
      for using the h5 to record directly to your computer (in to garage band or pro tools or any other DAW) you just set it up as we did in the video, but then change the USB setting to "audio interface" then plug in the USB, and the rest of the setup is on the computer side. So you would have to look into setting up a new audio interface for the program you are using.

    One question though?
    I only have options for recording 4 WAV file options, from WAV44.1kHz/16bit up to WAV48kHz/24bit but no MP3 options 🤷🏼‍♂️

    Great video dude, just a question - you say that u aim for -12 for voice recording, to what levels do you push it in post when u create videos? I always raise the voice/interview as high as possible without clipping in post (-3 ish). What would you recommend? :)

    • @faucast4948
      @faucast4948  2 роки тому +2

      It depends on where it going (eg: Netflix, youtube, theater)but for voice -6 to -3 is a good range to start for post. in general you want your sound effects to be able to go louder than voice sometimes, so you need to leave a little room, and music should usually be a little lower than voice. A common spread would be -3 for SFX, -6 for dialogue, and -9 for music, but every project has different needs.

I would never use this feature on a regular base but I'm going to film a wedding with very loud instruments and I can't operate the recorder because I've got two persons laved up as well. So I need to relay on the auto setting. Hopefully this feature has been included as well in the newer version.

    If I plan to record ambient sound outdoors or conduct interviews outside using a shotgun mic, which limiter / compression do you suggest?

    • @faucast4948
      @faucast4948  2 роки тому +1

      thanks for the kind words...
      as most old school pros would say, the best limiter is your finger. If you can riding the levels yourself (with some practice) it will yield the best results.
      That being said, comp (vocal) is a good place to start, if there is a still al lot of clipping you could take s small step up to Limiter (concert) and then if there is a lot a variation in loudness you may need to step up to Limiter (general).
      Page 95 of the user manual list the settings at the different options. avisoft.com/ZoomH5.pdf
      But if you can manage to keep all your levels between -20 and -6 i would go with no limiter on the recorder, and add it in post processing only when needed.

  • @okebaram
    @okebaram 2 роки тому +1

    Wow. This video is awesome. I am still going through and I am wondering why do we want to stay away from mp3? I never knew that before. I have several reasons in mind for my Zoom h5 by the way. And one of them is videos of events and online videos, but another one that is very important to me is vocals and music. And eventually, I will get to films as the bigger accomplishment, when I am better equipped. Just to throw some light on where I am coming from.

    • @faucast4948
      @faucast4948  2 роки тому +2

      MP3 is a far more compressed format. The quality will suffer, but also your ability to edit or filter in post will suffer a lot. I often use plugins like Izotope Voice De-noise, and those plugins ability to work well will be greatly reduced with mp3.
      Also there have been studies done on peoples brains with mp3 vs wav, and the mp3 compression make the brain work harder so people are actually more tired after long exposer to mp3 vs wav.
      For a lot of short youtube things it wont mater much if the final output gets converted to mp3, but for anything "professional" you definitely want to stick with wav. But also SD cards are cheap, and sound takes very little space compared to video, so you are not really doing yourself any favors but trying to save that space..

    Great video! What compression or limiter settings do you recommend for an interview with the XY mic?

    • @faucast4948
      @faucast4948  3 роки тому +1

      for a normal interview, I would go with "comp vocal" it is a small amount of compression to act a a safety 'just in case' things get a bit louder than expected, and that will let you dial it in exactly as you want in post.
      too much compression in the zoom and you cant undo if you change your mind later. so IMO less compression on the machine is best.. unless you are dealing with sounds at vastly different loudnesses like a live concert, then you may want more.

    Thanks very much for the helpful videos on the H5. I now know my zoom H5 much better than before.
    I have 2 questions about my H5: one is that when I try to record on battery rather than plug-in power, the recording stops after a few minutes even though there is plenty of battery power left. Second, there is a noticeable hum on all my recordings...I'm hoping it might go away if I can record on battery power. Thanks if you can help me out!

    • @faucast4948
      @faucast4948  Рік тому +1

      for the short rec time on battery, make sure you are using new, name brand batteries. Cheap ones from the dollar store, or off brand rechargeable are unreliable. You should get a at least a few hours of recording from one set of batteries... Also maybe try a different SD card. i see a lot more issues with cards than batteries.
      as for the hum, could be many things. Wall power can cause it. Being near power lines. Levels being too low. Or just sound in the environment like air conditioning/refrigerator/computers on, or even things on in the neighboring apartment.
      Also if its a used unit, there could just be something broken. they are not the most robust units. Dropping a few times can cause these issues.

    • @jayajulienne
      @jayajulienne Рік тому +1

      @@faucast4948 thanks for these ideas...I've got name brand rechargeable batteries, and it's not that the charge runs out. It's just that the recording stops itself.
      I'll try using a smaller SD card.
      I've found the hiss continues but is kess on battery power without being plugged into my laptop.
      I think the most likely all around is that my new recorder has gotten damaged during my travels.
      I really appreciate your expertise and your generosity with it!

    Hey man!
    I am a musician and I am recording myself. I play multiple instruments at once though and am very focused on my process while I'm playing. It's going to be difficult to change the volume levels on the H5 while I'm performing, however, the volume of my sessions range from very soft to pretty loud. Any tricks, tools, or integrations that can help with automatically controlling the volume levels while I'm recording?

    • @faucast4948
      @faucast4948  8 місяців тому

      Depends on a lot of factors. Usually for something like that i would want multiple mics, and i would set levels with specific mics on each instrument, but also try to physically separate each interment as much as possible. You basically need to look at it as recording a whole band, even though you are the only one playing.
      But also this could be one instance where i might recommend upgrading to one of the newer 32bit recorders. it takes a bit more work in post to mix the files well, but if set in a decent range it will preserve all of the sound information without clipping. Then it just becomes an editing problem.

    • @faucast4948
      @faucast4948  2 роки тому

      I guess i could see that as helping, but i would think a slate clapping or even a hand clap slate would be more useful as you could actually sync accurately with that, rather than just getting close with a the marker button. But maybe i am misunderstanding your usage.

    • @faucast4948
      @faucast4948  3 місяці тому

      If you are running the sound out of the h5 and and recording on the a6400, and the final file on the sd card from the camera has drift over time, i can only assume it is an issue with the camera. if there are other devices involved like an hdmi encoder going in to a computer there could be a lot of other issues.
      one test you could do would be to plug a mic directly in to the camera and test if the sound still drifts over time.
      But either way the only real fix i can suggest would be to try updating the firmware on all of the devices involved.
      now if you are recording separately on the h5 and a6400 and downloading both cards to a computer and syncing in post, there may be drift over long takes (around 30 min or more.) And this is just a function of using inexpensive consumer gear. Neither devices have true crystal syncing time code so that is just the downside of not spending tens of thousands of dollars on gear.
      the only fixes there would be to bump the sound a few frames every once in a while on your editing program, and just line it up by eye, or cut the camera and sound more frequently (maybe every 20 min or so) so they realign with each take.

      Thank you for replying. I am plugging the H5 directly into the camera. The camera is recording at 25p 100m and the h5 is on wav48khz 24bit. I will try stopping the recording frequently. I was letting it roll to make editing easier but obviously the drift does not help! I actually found there was no drift when they were not connected.

    Thanks for this tutorial! I was wondering if you've ever come across the 'E' (error) mark coming up randomly usually in the first 30 seconds of recordings? I get it in some recordings and it ends up not recording a few seconds at the start. I don't think there's any loud noises or anything different happening at the start of recordings to cause this. When I look at the Mark List of that recording, the places where the sound is cut out has the little 'E' showing. I'm trying to figure out why it does that but no luck so far...

    Can I use compressor and limiter at the same time or not? Cause I can see only one of these indicators on the screen. Not both. An second question is why when Im using zoom as an audio interface and talk to someone via discord, ppl say that I sound way better when I set it to multitrack. There mus be no difference to a sound quality I presume. Thanx

      Basically you can think of the compressor and limiter on this are the same feature or plugin on this, just with different settings depending on which you pick. selecting limiter is one preset, and compressor would be a different preset on the same plugin.
      for the discord thing, the only thing i can think of is it may be using whatever mic you have plugged in, mixd with the built in top mics gong to the other 2 channels.. I would think that would make it sound worse though, but there are a lot of variables there, so its hard to say.

    • @faucast4948
      @faucast4948  Рік тому

      You really never "Need" to use low cut on the recorder, unless maybe it is going out live. Otherwise (IMO) it is much better to do in your post software, if low cut is needed at all. Its not always needed though. If someone has a really low voice, low cut might be hurting the bottom end of the sound.

      Double check the phantom power setting, and also the CH1 button on the front has the red LED light on.. oh also check that the level knob is not all the way down.. these are all things i have seen people overlook. if you followed all the other settings though it could be broken.. seen that a lot too, as they tend to get abused.

      I don't use it for music recording, so i am not totally sure, but i don't believe there is an easy way to do that. You may want to upgrade to a computer based DAW if that is something you are doing a lot of.
      You can use the H5 as an interface and record in to garage band or protools or whatever you are comfortable with, and then have all the control in the world over those aspects.

    I just want to add my 2c, there's no point IMO in recording above 48 khz as the builtin mics (and most of the ones you plug in) record no frequency information above 20 Khz.
    The Nyquist theorem states you only need double the sampling Khz compared to the frequency response Khz. This means 40 Khz would even do, 48 Khz itself is overkill.

    • @faucast4948
      @faucast4948  3 місяці тому

      The Nyquist theorem is a calculation of minimum threshold, not the ideal threshold. The higher the sample rate, the more closely the digital signal approximates an analog signal. With voice recording this is not as much of an issue, but in music recording it can produce a fuller more complete representation of the various sounds at higher sample rates, especially if you are trying to record something like a full symphony in to one source. Your brain will do a lot of the heavy lifting to smooth out the sounds at lower bit rates, but this can lead to the listener actually feeling more tired after listening to long sessions at lower bit rates. This is one of the reasons we avoid using MP3 as well.
      But also what if i am recording music for dogs...

      @@lundsweden Well if you know you are only reproducing sine waves, 2 samples per oscillation is enough to make the math work, but we are not capturing sine wave, and thats not how the decoders interpret the info.
      the image here illustrates the concept of the nuance lost at sticking with the minimum. The more samples you have, the closer to the original analog you will get.

That diagram is nonsense, most adults can't hear much over 15 khz, let alone 20 khz. Maybe if you're 15 years old you can hear a 20 khz sine wave, by 40 you'd be lucky to hear over 12 khz.
