A pretty average start to EV production by Toyota in my view. There's many better EV choices. I drive a Tesla, which some may think makes me prejudiced, I'm not, but my sense is this car is no match for many of its competitors, including, but not just Teslas. A good balanced review. Thanks!
There are still too many background issues that relate to EVs for which I wouldn't buy or recommend one. Toyota, Tesla, BYD and it applies to all of them. High initial purchase price, expensive repairs and cost of battery replacements, higher than average depreciation, much higher insurance premiums, more frequent tire replacements are some of those issues. An EV might be fine if you are wealthy and aren't concerned about vaporising money like water down the drain when something goes wrong with it but they're not something I'd recommend to anyone who is struggling at all to make ends meet.
Drove one. Cool dash design for a Toyota, but the cars interior and some of the exterior are flimsy. It's not fast for an EV compared to others. Small steering wheel and oddly placed and oddly designed speedo screen.
@@john1701a It's not a good design. Sitting on the drivers seat the top of the steering wheel sits below the eyeline of the speedo display. If you rest your hand/s on top of the steering wheel you can't see the speedo. I don't like. Dosen't make sense.
It was designed with yoke control, but it would take much longer time to get approval, or even banned, in many regions. Hence, Toyota falls back to traditional wheel design that becomes awkward for particular model.
Look at this in terms of reliability most probably yes better than Tesla - latest tech and performance not - real question is the battery replaceable and at what cost?
Looked at getting one and was put off as it was horrible. It didn’t look right inside - It was like a kid designed the driver space. And what’s with the wind break around the speedo cluster? I have 2 Toyota’s currently so I do like them but #%#
This review neglected to mention the bz4x's biggest failure... It is restricted to two DC chargers per 24 period. Forget road trips!. A tesla model 3 will do Sydney to Melbourne with 2x 25 min charge stops. There bz4x will need 4 stops, the first 2 DC ones will be 45 mins each, then the next 2 AC stops will be 4 hours each. Total trip time nearly 20 hours!
Where did you get this info. I have one and have done 4 DC charging in 12 hours with no issue. Actually it charged at an average of 120kw during the trip I dud of almost 500miles. It might not allow to do more if you drive it at max speed almost to protect the battery and maintain the warranty.
Toyota once again going cheap on options whilst the competition are providing more for the same money. I have been a Toyota guy my whole life but I am now struggling to justify buying from Toyota when they are getting so complacent.
Sorry that doesn’t make sense. What you say is the exact reason why more people buy Toyota than anything else. They have never had bells and whistles to sell their vehicles, always late on the uptake on new tech and build quality that lasts. I’ve just purchased a new Toyota that still has window winders for goodness sake. 99% of drivers don’t want crap that stops working; they just need to get to work, or soccer and Toyota know it.
I feel like driving a Tesla is like wearing clothes bought from Costco. You see them everywhere. I like driving something that is fairly unique. Even rav4s are everywhere.

You’re entitled to your view, mine is opposite. EV’s have matured, and if you choose the right one you’ll be pleased with your choice.

seems a bit pricey
It is so expensive in Australia. In Canada it costs a few thousands less.
I would say the bz4x goes head to head with the BYD Atto-3 not the Tesla Model Y
Atto is too small. Swapped my 2020 rav4 for the bz4x, much more legroom for driver and passengers. Its longer than the RAV4

Both that steering-wheel & screen have proven popular with the new Prius.

@Deatomizer Resting your hand on top of the steering-wheel is unsafe. That's why we are taught to use the 10 & 2 position.

Maybe if you don’t need to service them then I’ll consider
Look at this in terms of reliability most probably yes better than Tesla - latest tech and performance not - real question is the battery replaceable and at what cost?
Why would you need to replace the battery? In new EVs today, the battery will outlast the rest of the car 🙄
In Europe Toyota give 1.000.000 km warranty on the Batteries.

I read about this 2 DC charge limit per day too. Someone confirm this is no longer the case as I will be picking one up in a week.
@aribasiebel no the 2DC charges per day is not true at least for UK cars.

Of course they would say that, when they’re failing at EV’s.

Is that why everyone is switching to BYD and Tesla?

Typical Toyota, overpriced & under equipped. Their TMD is people too scared to drive in the right lane & who only buy white or silver cars.
The wheels literally fall off the thing. 120 years of car manufacturing on this planet, and Toyota forgot how to keep the wheels on.
