You are absolutely right about not needing exact clothing matches from an era to dress like that era. Especially since trends repeat themselves. I work as a tour guide at a Victorian museum and I use my grandma’s clothes from the 70s since a lot of 70s trends draw inspo from Victorian trends.
@@eli0151 not sure about exact brands, but if you can sew I’d suggest sewing the outermost layer together and buying the undergarments. If you’re dressing in women’s attire I know that petticoats, hoops (for the skirt) and corsets are still sold online. I’ve even seen this occasionally in costume stores (even party city). There’s a lot of different styles for the Victorian era so from there it really depends on which style you like. For example, there were multiple points (especially in the 1850s-60s) where off the shoulder dresses were popular. You might be able to find off the shoulder dresses that are sold currently that match to popular colors/patterns from that time that have a long and flowy skirt. From there you could use a petticoat, hoop skirt, and corset (make sure you have something under that to make sure it doesn’t hurt you) under the dress and you might be able to pull off the look. I’ve done 1850s to 1950s styles before, but I’ve primarily sewn them myself so I’m not too sure. If you’re willing to pay a lot you may be able to get an actual piece from that time period. I have a dress from the 1850s and it’s absolutely gorgeous. Cost a lot of money but after a couple of alterations it fit perfectly. Just remember the hoops or bussels are a MUST for this era of fashion! Even without a corset it may look fine but the dress/skirt will not look proper without that! I’d recommend looking at UA-cam channels that specialize in historical clothing for more information, since I’m just a hobbyist lol. Bernadette Banner and Abby Cox are really good resources on this sort of thing if you wanna check them out! Hope this helps!
Litterally tho! I ended up making my own prom dress bc i got sick of dresses being too big in the waist but fitting everywhere else. And its kinda goofy cuz im not even an extreme hourglass, im pretty thin actually. Cant ever find a dress that fits tho!
I grew up loving vintage. My Mom could always find classic pieces that fit me like a glove - how was she able to do that!? ❤ I know the left is the vintage but the right side looks much more fitting!
@@lizasarkar584 it’s based upon Chanel’s bar jacket which Dior improved upon but others have been inspired by. I also recall similar from older styles prior to these designers which they simply became famous for. I would call the modern white a poplin bar jacket.
both the outfits look beautiful! But New Look of the time required shapewear to achieve the proper silhouette (bullet bra + girdle + slip for smoothness). postwar period shows often have the same issue, the clothes are gorgeous but the lines are just off
I'm into 70s and 60s vintage and its actually quite easy to find modern pieces that fit the aesthetic, especially maxi and midi dresses. Plus turtle necks are turtle necks no matter when they were made.
this video finally made me understand why i don't _love_ your vintage looks. it's because the vintage clothes never really fit you properly. I don't think this is somehow your fault because i know you share those clothes with your grandma (and also who would dare alter 100 year old clothes amirite) but the right side definitely looks better just because it _fits_ you better
It's true. For the last 7 years I've been inspired by the real fashion of the 80's. I only have 3 jackets from the 80's. The rest of my clothes (jackets, t-shirts, shirts, trousers) and shoes are contemporary, but I create the style in such a way that it looks like the 80's. Really a lot of clothes from that time are still fashionable, after all the 80's started over 40 years ago, not 400 years ago, so there's not such a big gap between our clothes and those. For fans of 80s fashion, I recommend - if you want to make a simple blouse (even a t-shirt), jumper, jacket, coat or blazer look like it's from the 80s - sew on shoulder pads. I'm a guy, and for fashion fans of the past, I recommend not paying attention to the "gender" of the clothes in the shop. I'm not a cross-dresser, but half of my wardrobe is women's clothing because a lot of it looks like men's clothes from a few decades ago. For example, for many years I dreamt of beautiful walnut-brown high-waisted suit trousers like the ones worn by men at the time, especially the New Romantic ones. I only found them in the women's department and bought them in 2020 for €20. They look good on me and I don't look like a cross-dresser in them. It's just that men's fashion has become very poor in our time, it's no longer as intriguing, colourful, creative and attractive. Everything is grey in the men's department. In contrast, men's fashion of the 60s, 70s and 80s was an era of colour. Today we can find colours in the women's department. Guys, don't be afraid to look in the women's department - clothes have no gender. What was once worn by men is today unfairly attributed solely to women's fashion.
Mostly but not exclusively left. On the first dress, the skirt looks better in the left. On the second outfit, the jacket on the right is fitted better to your figure on the left too, though above the waist (except for the neckline, which is too loose to hold the proper shape), the right looks better. Both look great, mind!
Fun fact I live in Pineville Louisiana and my family owns the oldest.building there the old owner kids put all there stuff in the attic when they died so I have tons of clothes and I mean that liturgy these people had enough clothes to fill 3 walk in closets
I did all my own shopping for my 1930’s costumes for a play and think I did pretty good getting some thrifted pieces for the look! It was a lot of fun trying to find them too!
Thank you so much for all the work you’ve done for us. We love you and everyone at Team Theorist for doing so much to put out quality content that we could all enjoy during our highs or lows, and everything in between. Thank you.
Both look fantastic, but I think the right captures the "vintage" feeling more- it may not have the same tighter fit as the true vintage, but the white jacket and black gloves fit the hat more nicely, I think. Love to see you styling 1940's and 50's looks!
I didn’t notice the video shows which is modern vs true vintage at the top. I thought the RIGHT was true vintage and like it batter- on my second watch I saw the left was actually vintage.. and liked it more 😭
YOU LOOK AMAZING IN THE UNDERGOWN (this that what it's called? The white gown at the beginning lol), it makes a lovely silhouette. Im a sucker for tight dresses/skirts that flare out at the bottom lol
The manner you’re moving around in the various outfits, what I was half expecting to begin is the song by Bette Midler, the boogie woogie bugle boy of company B.
Absolutely- I just went to a thrift store and by sheer coincidence found an almost perfectly matching skirt and scarf, and then knew I had to get a white blouse to get a sort of 1950s Hollywood glam look
As someone who's learning/willing to be a character designer (which means I gotta learn different kinds of fashion) I like the right side better. The white shirt makes your silhouette stand out more and balances with your hat, compared to the black shirt. The left side kinda makes you look like a straight line. Theres more into the right side I like but I'mma just end up writing a ten page essay about it. 😅
Both outfits looks so pretty and stylish at the same time, but the Modern Version looks so gorgeous and I like how the green little blouse looks so good, it looks very bright and looks so comforting. But the vintage one is such a classic, giving a sense of ✨noir b&w crime drama✨, maybe such as I think of Kathrine from Mildred. But I love the clothing it is very cute and so fashionable.
Very true! I actually dress in a 1910s-style every day and since I'm going so far back in time, really only my hats are true vintage items. You can do a lot with modern clothing so long as you can nail the silhouette!
i was so confused by the first 'outfit' because they looked SO identical, and it took me literal minutes to realize that's cuz they were undies and not one of the outfits you were comparing lmao
When my high school did How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, us chorus girls were told to get outfits from thrift stores and things. Obviously with us being high school students, none of our costumes were going to be true vintage (unless we had a grandma or someone like that who had clothes still in wearable condition which, to my knowledge, none of us did). Most of us went with a basic skirt, button up shirt, and belt combo with our own colors, jewelry, and scarves to snazz things up. We all looked great! That play was so much fun! And I did a similar thing the next year when we did South Pacific, but that was easier because it's set on a tropical island so we were all wearing shorts and short sleeved shirts.
I prefer the modern side- the peplum really gives it that signature dior shape. I think for both though something under the skirt to add more volume would really add to the look.
The thing is the vintage items are quality made, they hang differently, the colours, the details in the cut, necklines. I like the comparisons though they are pretty good. Elegance is never out of style.❤👗👠👑
The right side, it perfectly gives off the Dior look!
yeah the darker dress and the white top
I like the blue vintage dress with the white modern top 🥰
They both look like Dior. The only differences are the color, the heels, and the necklines.
The pleating and waist definition on the right blazer is the biggest difference I see.
And ruffles?
(Or is the right one ironed better?)
Neither of these look like dior. They don't have the classic cinched waist.

White jacket side- perfect!
I think the fabric quality and tailoring of the jacket are so much nicer on the left, but they both look really nice!
The left, but just because I love blue, and it just look *amazing*!
I actually prefer the colours on the right; the left simply has more flattering silhouettes.

The green dress is from a clothing line that is supposed to look vintage, so I wouldn't really call it modern.
