    I watch your videos because your voice is so relaxing and your accent is lovely. It's so calming. I might just be listening to you while I colour rather than actually watching sometimes. :-)
    I'm sorry you have such issues with your back.

    Thank you for blessing our lives with these informativee videos! Being recently disabled, I have found purpose with art and colored pencils. Shopping on line for supplies would be wasteful if it weren't for your valuable input . Keep the faith and know that you are doing something quite fabulous around the world!

    I want you to know that I am brand new to the artist community and I live and breathe and wake in the night to watch reviews and tutorials. I love your channel. and I relate to your reasons for having a channel, and taking up arrt. It's really refreshing that you have been straightforward about chronic pain and how it changes lives. I try to be an advocate wherever I can. Guess what? Prismas went up 3.00 US overnight, so now I have that beautiful BOX 72 Derwent in my cart. in 3 days I am clicking that button! It's my birthday present. I love wooden boxes. Do you think I will be as happy or happier given the fact that I will be using the pencils for at least a year, over the Prismacolor? I love baby oil as my solvent, can you do a test for me? Or maybe you already know.Thanks in advance.

    Recently found your channel and have been using your reviews to help me decide on which pencils to buy, I’ve recently started colour pencil drawing and your channel resonates with me as I too have disabilities and spend most of my time housebound, art is my therapy, social life and everything in between.

    Superb review Harry, I have been looking forward to this one for a while, my first set of coloured pencils were the Derwent studios, I bought them 25 years ago! and still have them, although most of them are 1-2 inch stubs now, really enjoy using them and my Derwent artist cp. The studio strip is exactly the same quality and colour as the artist range, its been a misconception for a long time that studio cp's are an inferior student grade, that's not the case, they are the same quality as the artist cp's, with a thinner core. I prefer the round wood casing of the artist cp definitely more comfortable to hold. Really enjoy all your reviews Harry, keep them coming!

      I'm with you Smoothie mate, I much prefer the round pencils especially the Artists pencils, they are and excellent sturdy pencil. Also I know what you mean, I always used to think that the Studios were student grade, but they are a long chalk off student grade. Thank you so much mate for your support and kind comments, I really appreciate your support. All the best mate.

    Student ranges in all brands are to give users and students a cheaper alternative to purchase as people just starting art, and particularly students, don't want or have the money to spend on artist ranges. Usually the student range in any brand always has a smaller amount of available colours compared to the artist range. This is to ensure the artist range remains "elite" and gives those paying for "artist" quality have more choice, as "student" ranges are merely meant to be an introduction to a medium, not a long term investment.

    Considering the beginning of your video, I taugh you may like to know that you are one of my 3 main references for colored pencil review. Those 3 references, I consider, give me a very good idea of the quality and property of pencils. I take this combination very seriously. Thank you for your good work!

    Welcome back Harry!! And congratulations on 800+ subs!! I'm relatively new to your channel but I devoured most of your videos within a day haha. I had to restrain myself from finishing them all off in a single day 😆 They're very well made and also fun and helpful to watch. And about lengthy replies, they're not a problem at all. I personally love interacting with people here and it's always great to hear back from a channel you watch. Especially being able to discuss things is great in my opinion.
    This was a great review. Honestly speaking, when I first heard of this set I wondered what their specialty is...and when Derwent already has so many interesting pencil brands, I really didn't see the point of these...so I never really looked into them much. But since you made a review, I had to watch it..and while it turned out mostly like what I had expected, what you mentioned about layering them and them going hand in hand with the Artist line is an interesting point. I guess maybe if you prefer a thinner core and hexagonal shape, then you'd want to get these over the artist line..maybe. Thanks for sharing your thoughts : )

    I have a pretty old set of this Derwent line of colored pencils (#12). So old in fact, they were called the Cumberland set, but after doing some research, I've found no info as which years they were sold. I did find a tutorial here on YT by the Virtual Instructor, where he draw a beautiful, small bird using the Studio set. My pencils have a nice fat core of 4mm and the barrels are round. These CP's are best for layering, imo, b/c it's best to put down a light layer at a time due to the harder lead. I do prefer the Ivory Black from this set, as it's a more natural tone than some of the heavier pigmented pencils, but that's just my preference. I paid $5.99 US according to the sticker on my old set, but all I can say is they're at least 20 years old. Thanks so much for your great tutorials, Harry! Consumers need to be well informed, so you're providing an awesome channel here on YT.

    The studio colour strip being identical to the artists pencils simply means that the colours provided in both ranges match, not the cores. The student version of the colour Kingfisher blue is the same colour as the artist "kingfisher blue" but the student version will contain more fillers/be made cheaper, it is just the pigment combo used to make the colour range is the same.

      Thank you so much, I knew it was one of the two but then I don't understand why Derwent only have 72 Studio and 120 Artists, if they are to complement each other and a CP artist lifts a color from the Artists 120 range and then try's to find the same color in the Studio range for detail, they may not get it. Thank you so much for your support I really appreciate it so much. I can't believe how lucky I am to so many wonderful people subscribe and view my videos.

    Liked this review! I had only heard one comment on these and I think it was something like "don't bother, they're not worth it" so it was nice to hear a detailed view about them! Thank you! I have a small set of their watercolor pencils and like those a lot. Am looking for a nice set of regular colored pencils and am taking in all the information I can before I invest. Also liked the way you explained why you weren't thrilled with these because I know Derwent has a good reputation. Thank you for being thorough!

      teresa b Thanks Teresa, I love Derwent as a company and love their products, it's just this set that I'm not sure about. With regards to investing in a good set of Colored pencils, it very much depends on your budget. I would definitely say get the largest set you can afford. Colored pencils aren't like watercolours were you can buy 6 colours and get 100 colours back from mixing, I know I'm exaggerating a bit lol. So with pencils you need as many tones and shades as you can get. I think however if you don't want to splash out on a 120 set, I would definitely say 36 or 48 sets are an excellent place to start. The Faber Castell Polychromos are a real sound investment I have a review of them coming soon. Or the Lyra pencils are excellent and the price bracket is superb. You can get a set of 72 Lyra for about £50 which is excellent price for the quality you get. Hope this helps a bit. Oh and the 72 set of Derwent Coloursoft are another excellent set. All pencils mentioned are available open stock so when you run out of a color you can buy just that color replacement.

    Hi Harry, I recently came across your channel and i found your reviews very helpful. Thanks for posting these long and detailed reviews. Just like you mentioned, i always wondered what is the purpose of these studio pencils. when you can get really sharp and pointy end with derwent artists pencils themselves. Btw i really like derwent products, they are a bit underrated in my opinion.

      Like you, I love Derwent products and I'm really lucky to live very close to their head office and factory. But, although I like the Studio pencils, I just don't see the point in the line given how fantastic I think the Artist line is. Any way Ummar thank you so much for stopping by.

    These were my first ever 'grown up' set of coloured pencils, I remember being excited to pursue art at GCSE and on holiday in the summer I bought a set of these with my pocket money. I loved them for years and recently ( a good 16 years later) I found them again in the bottom of an old pencil case. I'm curious to see how they perform with all the knowledge I have now and whether I still love them.

    Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on these pencils. I have the Derwent Studio set as it was the best I could find at my local art supplies store here in Australia. I am considering the Derwent coloursoft as well. I have considered the Prismacolour Premier set but for me personally its a lil too pricey. I am new to adult colouring and am doing as much research as I can on different types of pencils. I find many colouring artists tend to prefer the Prismacolour Premier or the Pollycromos I think because they layer and then use some type of blending pencil technique. I am a new subscriber to your channel 😊

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Karen the Derwent ColourSoft are a bit like the Prismacolor in respect of their soft core, they are much more pigmented than the Studio and softer so you would notice a considerable difference.
      There are lots of different type of blending pencils and tools that you can use for pencils, in fact I think I will do a video on the various techniques used by colored pencil artists to blend colors. I think doing a video might help explain the various results better

      Kosana Troughton hi Kosana thank you so much for stopping by the channel. Yeah they are very like the Verithins. The Verithins are a slimmer, slightly harder version of the Prismacolors, whereas the Studios are a slimmer version of Derwents wonderful Artists pencil only they have the same core. I hope this helps you a bit.

      alien creation you are so right about them looking very like the Watercolour pencils, they are so easily mistaken and it you have Studio and Watercolour pencils mixed together, they are very difficult to tell apart. Thanks for stopping by mate and leaving your feed back.

    Harry, Prismacolor too has a line with a hard core called Verithin. Gary Greene, a noted author on colored pencil books, recommends using the Verithins for outlining and fine detailed work. By the way, Verithins are a lot cheaper than Derwent Studio pencils. And, if I remember correctly, Veritthins also work well with watercolor pencils.

    Try some Saunders Waterford hot pressed 300 g paper. It's tough and toothy and it works really well with these harder pencils. Apply them in light layers and you'll be amazed at the results. In my opinion Verithins are too hard.

      @TheArtGearGuide  8 років тому

      Hi Terence thanks for the tip, I've seen the Saunders paper about and like the look of it and what you are saying makes a lot of sense, I'll definitely give that a go because I'm hoping to get the 120 set of Derwent Artists once I've saved up. I actually don't really understand Derwent products at all. The only way to tell is to try them all. But, when I was considering some brands this is what I learned. The *Artist pencil* is the harder core pencil that a lot of people don't really like, so Derwent made *Coloursoft*, which is their softest pencil. The *Studio* set I believe is the thinner version of Coloursoft. I mean Studio pencils are 3.4mm core and Coloursoft is 4mm core. So if the core thickness is the thing then it explains why it only comes with 72 colours, because the biggest Coloursoft set is 72 colours.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  8 років тому +1

      Hi Flana thank you so much for stopping by my channel. The Studio pencils are a thinner version of the Artists not the Coloursoft. You are absolutely right in saying the Artists are the hard core and the Coloursoft are the soft core, but if you look on Derwents site and read about the Studio pencils, you will see that Derwent say they are the same pencil as the Artists only a thinner version. Which is why I don't understand there being 120 Artists pencils of beautiful colours and only 72 of the Studio. Thanks so much for stopping by.

  • @louisescherbain312

    Maybe this is Derwent’s version of the Prismacolor Verithins? I have Fabercastell Polychromos and Prismacolor Premier. I have a 36 Set of the Derwent Colorsoft. I’m looking to buy a set of pencils and can’t decide which ones. I seem to favor a harder pencil but also like nice shading and blending. Which do you think I should try? Derwent Studio or Derwent procolor. I’m only using them for coloring in adult coloring books. Oh and what is your take on the Derwent Academy ? I have a 24 set. I appreciate your opinion.
