    As much as I hate Jasper immediately getting fixed, the fact she bowed to Steven and called him "my diamond" was sick af. She truly does respect strength above all else and it's probably the last thing Steven wanted to hear at that moment.

      I genuinely think Jasper immediately getting fixed is more horrifying narratively, and to Steven himself, than if he just had to live with the consequences. Jasper’s shattering as a plot beat isn’t meant to be about the “shock” and permanence of death as such a turn may be in other pieces of fiction, instead it’s meant to further reinforce how horrifying it can be to have that level of power over matters such as life and death- it means Steven has the capability of shattering anyone and getting away scot free if he so wished, simply because he’s got the resources AND the ability, and that’s the last thing he needs to internalize at this moment.

      Echoing your sentiment about the “my Diamond” being sick AF and super unsettling for Steven, hell yeah! I feel like the ease of Jasper’s revival makes that moment even more scary for Steven, tbh. Because now he kinda IS playing god, like the Diamomds.

      Of course, I also do want to state that from an angst perspective I would’ve eaten Jasper taking longer to be “fixed” for breakfast XD
      Not only that, but your opinion is your own, and I do want to respect that. I just wanted to chatter on about what I believe the writer intention may have been, just in case it may have been an angle you’ve never considered. Hope you have a nice day!

      I don't get why people don't like Jasper being fixed, because it makes complete sense that it's possible. Rose was able to fix cracks in gems, as well as Steven, with the weaker version of that power, and on larger scales, even bring mortals back to life as well as make them live longer and need less food (Lars, Lion), and Stevens powers have been growing stronger the whole time future happens, not to mention that Steven also used the three other Diamonds powers to fix Jasper. Plus, if you think about it, the fusion experiments show that you can put gem shards back together, so if it were to be done with all shards of a gem, it should just bring them back. The reason it was so scary for gems is because why would the Diamonds have cared whether or not a random grunt of theirs died or not when they could just make more instead, and non-diamonds wouldn't have a chance of fixing them. Plus, we don't know for sure if it's possible to fix shattered gems with just one Diamond's power, or if you need more.

    No doctors, no school, always making his own food, ate a lot of pizza and junk. That lifestyle only worked out in the end because Steven is a gem. I don't think Greg would've raised his kid any other way if they were a gem or not. He had "too much structure" but his parenting was practically neglect. Steven matured enough to realize it. You'd have to be pretty immature to think he's being completely unreasonable.

      Exactly, I LOVE that they showed that. It's a common thing with abusive parents and their children, the children often rebel by living their lives in the most opposite way possible, which can be equally unhealthy. Greg's parents were too controlling, but Greg was too casual and free. He DIDN'T raise Steven correctly, because he was too hung up on his own parental issues, on his own thoughts of 'I'm not gonna be like them'.
      I love Greg as a character but he dropped the ball there, and I applaud the show for showing that, with Steven lashing out at Greg and wanting MORE control in his life. Chances are, if Steven didn't resolve this and had a kid of his own, that kid would grow up exactly like Greg, hating Steven's controlling nature and wanting more freedom.

    Greg left his family because he felt so constricted with the life style and wanted to feel free to do what he dreams of doing. Steven is the opposite where he has too much freedom and needs the stability in his life, he doesn’t have proper education, he only has what the gems or his dad taught him or what he learned himself. It works if you have a balance of both, a feeling of responsibility, while still having the time to take a break and do some self-care. Steven became the doctor to heal other gems, but never went to one himself to help the mental baggage he’s been carrying for years!

      i kind of agree and disagree. i think greg definitely was a bit too unstructured as a parent, but i think the point of this episode was to demonstrate that there is no true “correct” way to be a parent - they will all inevitably make mistakes or have shortcomings because they’re human beings, not paragons of perfection. steven is absolutely valid to wish he had more discipline as a kid (and greg is even receptive to that), but in this episode he is currently looking for some kind of profound realization or magical answer that will resolve his grief and identity crisis over connie’s rejection. blaming greg will not give him that answer, because it ultimately has to come from himself and his own self-acceptance.

    I actually sympathize with Steven. My mom grew up in a very restrictive and abusive home, she then flipped it the other way for her children but more so with me specifically. I got away with everything. I had no real discipline after my father died and my mom was just too busy dealing with my older sister acting out to deal with me. I feel sort of neglected when I look back on my childhood, I only have three memories of going to the dentist before my twenties, and when I asked my mom why she didn’t take me to one, she just said that she didn’t want to make me go.

    Mr.Universe was probably one of the hardest episodes to watch for me, cause seeing Steven blow up at Greg the one person he's been the closest to the whole series. Greg grew up to constricted in his life but in turn gave Steven too much freedom and his life became chaotic and lacked structure. So in seeing that Greg had exact life that Steven low key wanted and his dad kept him from him, made him upset as he starts feeling like his chaotic life was all his father's fault. Steven didn't even bother to listen to his father's perspective on the life he lived before, nor did he even pick up on certain context clues. Like how all the letters he sent to his parents were unopened, meaning when Greg ran away, he was dead to them, and that's messed up as it is. Or how he changed his name to Universe not just cause of his favorite song, but rather the message behind the song in having the freedom to be whoever you wanted. But Steven tuned it all out and thinks his life is a mess cause he's Greg's son, and that's hard to hear. But at the end of the episode, Steven crashes the van, and now more than ever is the right time for normal parent to scold their child for such a mistake or lashing out like he did, but instead Greg goes to support mode, the parenting style he dedicated himself too. Once again lacking structure. Which made Steven lose all hope and respect for his father in that instant. I know Steven really doesn't hate his dad or anything, but Seeing Steven act like this toward the one person he cares for the most just hurts to watch

      I think the person he’s closest to is Amethyst but his dad is his dad and unfortunately they’ve had a lot of distance in their life. Greg honestly feels like the cool uncle that brings Steven junk food more than his father with how supplementary his role has been in his life

      That last part especially gets me. Steven looks so flabbergasted and subsequently disappointed in Greg at the end; it really does feel like the down to earth, wise father figure he’s always thought of Greg as just permanently broke as his childhood is put through a new lens as he does the exact opposite of what Steven sees he should be doing as a parent.

      5 months too early. We knew how Steven grew up taking on responsibility since he was 9 years old. He had the power to protect the world, but Steven stated "I needed what you had". Greg could've gone and tried to show up at his parents house and go introduce steven. I think Steven's grandparents wouldn't really reject him. At the same time. Just to meet his family other than Greg or the Crystal gems he went across the galaxy, investigated the true identity of his mother, went to a war, fought his aunts, almost all gems are trying to kill him for being a half gem half breed. He never met his mom ever... And all of that experience and he could've driven probably hours at most just to meet another family of Steven.

      I feel for Greg because there is a lot of hints pointing to what he is saying about his childhood is true - it wasn't just "strict parenting," his parents were actually abusive with how much they dismissed and suppressed him. But Greg over-corrected with his parenting of Steven (which is a very common parenting mistake). Steven is right to be angry with Greg, because ideally a child would get a healthy mix of structure and freedom throughout their childhood (the ratio of which changes with age). But Steven is wrong in that he would not have been better off with the childhood that Greg had.

    • @pieflower6419
      @pieflower6419 11 місяців тому +4

      @@emilyprice178 Agreed. I'm very glad the series addressed this, because it's very common and yet this is the only representation I've seen in media. I'm actually in a similar (though less traumatic) situation to Steven and my parents are like Greg, I had to impose a lot of my own structure as a child because they were overcorrecting from their own abusive childhood. Again, to a lesser extent.

    I think what hurts me most about Fragments is the fact that the whole episode could’ve been avoidable if the Gems didn’t corner Steven like a wild animal in their confrontation. It’s understandable that they would be upset and freaked out about Steven crashing the van- something they must know is very unlike him, we’ve seen him drive plenty before and he seems to be a safe driver otherwise- and almost injuring his dad, but if they had even the slightest bit of context about the WHY then I think they would’ve chosen an entirely different approach to this conversation. It’s like watching a cartoon Shakespearean tragedy though, because of course the WHY for them not knowing is overtly because Steven doesn’t have the emotional presence of mind to know how to explain what he’s going through to them. They’re just… at an impasse, all of them. :(

  • @scionofshadow
    @scionofshadow 11 місяців тому +33

    His emotions are the problem for sure, but at the same time nobody so far is not even trying to address it from Steven's perspective. They're doing their best though, but it's by showing how it was for them, which is the exact opposite of what Steven needs. All that Steven gets from it is the egotistical part which he's just fed up bc of dealing with what Rose did. He's just a teenager trying to process whats happening with himself, in a desperation mode.
    The diamond eyes when he's about to do it on Jasper though... That always get me so bad.

  • @mrrd4444
    @mrrd4444 11 місяців тому +8

    I think most of us grew up with the kind of upbringing that's restrictive so we naturally relate to Greg, but every kid is different and needs different things and Steven needs structure. I can relate because heck, I, as a lone adult, need structure. A lot of adults, I feel, can't provide themselves structure for a while and I even know some who suck at taking care of themselves but suddenly are good at it when taking care of others like kids. I think everyone assumes Steven's so put together that they don't notice what he really needs, and to be fair, he also does his part to hide it. So I get everyone's side.
    All that being said, it's clear that Greg's parents didn't care enough to open his letters - maybe they care about him enough to keep the letters, but they never even bothered to ACTUALLY LISTEN TO HIM, which shows their bad parenting.

Greg tried to keep in contact with them and they ignored him because they didn’t like that he was acting as an individual, not to mention when he still lived with them they forced him to cut his hair and they put down his interests. Greg wasn’t perfect, but he was also a single dad of a half alien child, he was doing the best with what he had. 😢

    What really stikes me with Steven Universe Future, is that while the main series is was a physical journey of discoverment, Future is the emotional spectrum og that, similar to how Kung Fu panda 2 was an emotional journey for Po while in the first movie its more physical. Steven going through all these changes while his own mind can't emotionally comprehend it, it really hits you, like when he went to the hospital, Connie's mom does mention how his body is reacting so much despite it being so mild, its cause he's not mentally there anymore

    kids would kill to have stevens live, true. but then theyd end up just like him. a traumatized teenager with no schooling, no job experience, no life outside of saving the universe. this is all happening because for once, steven is having a breather from all of that and is realizing just how messed up his life is. greg is a good father, and i believe had good intentions when trying to spare steven from his own toxic upbringing, but Steven also has the right to be upset at greg's loosey goosey parenting style.

    What I do wish SU:F had more time to develop was that Steven and Jasper have the same trauma and response to it, just on different levels. They were set with expectations of their origin circumstances, forced to be something they weren't for the LONGEST time, and now they're in constant fight mode waiting for a battle that realy isn't coming. All Jasper and Steven feel they have left after everything else was wrung out of them is power because that's all they feel others expect from them. That kind of trauma-bonding does indeed usually end up like this: hurting themselves and others because they feel they have no other outlet. Might makes right, spoils to the victor, including happiness.

    Steve didn’t go to school or a dr. So what if kids would want his childhood- it was still traumatic & he was ignored by his dad who lived in his van rather than with his son at the temple. Not completely, but the gems didn’t know how to deal with a little kid either. Kids need stability & Steven didn’t exactly get that. Stop thinking about how cool his childhood was bc that’s frankly immature & harmful. Stop saying Steven should be grateful bc kids would have loved to be in his shoes. That’s such a harmful way of thinking & dismissing studies on childhood development & Steven’s own feelings.
    Greg wanted Steven to have a much freer upbringing than he himself had, but it went way beyond allowing Steven to just be himself. Greg went too far in the other direction. Think about it: no school meant no chance to socialize with kids his age, to form a close friend group that could also have been his support system. He could have had access to regular physical & emotional care from the nurse & the school counselor.
    Steven was also deprived of so much. Greg didn’t do him any favors. Greg wasn’t a good dad. Emotionally, a bit, but every other aspect needed for a healthy childhood? No.
    Everyone was always expecting Steven to have powers someday that they forgot he’s also a human child.

      And then the fact you call Steven reacting to things in his life as him just been a teenager and a turd, wtaf. He’s traumatized & he’s not dealing with emotions in a rational way bc of that! Ppl with PTSD and anxiety disorders can have angry outbursts. They feel things and experience things differently than those with no anxiety. It’s wildly unfair to call his behavior as bratty when he is mentally unwell.
      Anxiety also has a physical aspect to it, so it’s not just emotional.
      Your take on this was wildly ableist & vile. I encourage you to actually look at how ppl experience PTSD bc I can tell you personally it is not just us being brats.

    This episode always made me have a really negative view of Greg because he just was not trying to understand what Steven was saying at all. Steven wasn’t either but he’s the emotional teen while Greg is supposed to be the mature. Despite needing to be a mature adult, Greg kept doing immature things in the episode. And to be frank, a lot of Greg’s parenting was entirely too hands off. Steven only ever ate junk, he never went to school, he never went to the doctor, he only knew one person near his age to socialize with, he was constantly in life-threatening situations, etc. Greg really tried to overcorrect with what his parents did. The only reason Steven is probably alive is cuz he’s a gem. If he was just a human he probably would’ve had a much more depressing upbringing under Greg.
