Right? The least expensive houses in America tend to be in already de-populated rural areas where job prospects are pretty grim. Okay, so you can afford the house, but does this mean you can afford to have a child? I feel like the incredible surge in housing costs is probably the chief reason more women of childbearing age are delaying pregnancy or opting out of second and third pregnancies altogether. I think it was business journal that published a story about the pandemic creating a North American baby bust ( some economists thought the pandemic would results in at least a slight baby boom. Which makes sense in crises that are short-lived, such as power outages.) When they linked to the story on Twitter, they got ratioed by millennials yelling about isn't it responsible to delay or opt out of child rearing when you can't afford it? It was really fascinating.

I don't even understand his solution is though. Should poor people have kids probably not it could lead to a lot of hardships for the child but like what is he fighting for the end of child welfare? What the heck will that solve
Maybe he has a kid and wants nothing to do with it, but knows as the father he is financially responsible, if the kid were to be "put down" as nicely as I can put it, he suddenly wouldn't be financially responsible anymore. Yes I've started to assume there's a deep personal reason for why people have such nasty views of others, in my experience (growing up with a literal narcissistic parent) you pick up on this pattern. They only consider themselves and their circumstances, never anyone else. And to be fair, the clinical narcissists, are often under diagnosed because they refuse to get checked for mental illnesses. What do people learn in school these days?? It has been well known for decades that people have fewer children as their economic prospects improve, not because they choose not to have children. I hear so many people get this ass-backward all the time....
Easiest way to bring the birth rate down? Deliver well funded and adequate education to more working class and poor populations. Provide regulation so women can have access to equal pay for equal work. Provide economic opportunities to communities so that people who want to grow in careers that bring meaning like medicine, social work, childcare, education and community service can. If you do this and provide free healthcare at the point of service so that more young girls have access to preventative care, you'll bring the birth rate down. Economic Opportunity through education will do it without punishing or regulating individual behaviors. Social regulation will just lead to backlash.
Caller: here’s my very unique situation about a relative with too many kids and one is a hitman. We shouldn’t allow people to be financially irresponsible when it comes to welfare and kids. Response: here’s my own personal experience explaining why unless you’re very rich most middle-class people are not “ready for the financial burden and implications“ of having a child of their own. This is why welfare and assistance is important. Caller: well, that’s a nonstarter argument. And what, your incredibly unique situation you referred to about a family member having so many kids and one of them turned out to be a hitman is something we should take as gospel as to why social programs are bad?
People would rather regulate the wombs, diets and financial autonomy of poor people than tax the rich and redistribute wealth.... something that would absolutely benefit them as well.

“If you own your own home…” You don’t own your home until the mortgage is paid off. The average US mortgage length is 30 years. So even if a 20 yr old purchases a home, as the caller is suggesting, they cannot have kids until they’re 50. The 2007 mortgage illustrates, ‘homeowners’ can easily become an unplanned 'financial risk’ as Matt was trying to allude to. They were priced out of their new mortgages rates and foreclosure occurred.
There are lots of people who need help and lots of lots of people who want to help other people. More help for people costs less than what business and the rich receive or save in all the different ways they are catered to.
The real question is why do conservatives want to regulate welfare for the poor, but not the wealthy. Why do they criticize the poor for not contributing, but allow corporations to exploit loopholes to avoid paying any taxes? Which costs the government more money - poor people misusing welfare funds or billion dollar companies taking millions in subsidies, and hoarding their money in off-shore bank accounts?
Conservative "leaders" want to chase the pennies of the former and ignore the latter, then blame the rising defecit on the progressives. Remember all the upraor when Biden increasd the IRS budget. Republicans warned "They're coming after YOU (average middle class taxpayer) next" - still waiting on that one.

You don’t own your home until the mortgage is paid off.
Punishment doesn't stop poor people from having too many children-- access to contraception, medical care, better paying jobs, education, etc does.
