- A Broadway revival directed by Jerry Zaks and starring Peter Gallagher, Faith Prince, Nathan Lane and Josie de Guzman, played at the Martin Beck Theatre from April 14, 1992 to January 8, 1995 for 1,143 performances. The production received a rave review from Frank Rich in The New York Times, stating "It's hard to know which genius, and I do mean genius, to celebrate first while cheering the entertainment at the Martin Beck."[8]. It won four Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical and also won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Revival.

That soprano 's note gave me LIFE
When both Timon and Pumba are in a show together!
Mhm. Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella were also in "A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum" together too, Nathan was Pseudolus, Ernie was Marcus Lycus. :D
are you kidding this was practically their audition tape
I live for JK Simmons dancing in this.
No way! As in original film J Jonah Johnson in Sam Raimi's Spider Man leading Sit Down Your Rockin the Boat?
Manuel Orozco yeah he’s playing BENNY SOUTHSTREET in the pink suit
Jk Simmons J Jonah Jameson in the Spider Man film series and Spider Man far from home
Is there anything JK Simmons can't do?
This is the best performance of Sit Down You're Rockin' The Boat in existence, performed by the best Guys & Dolls cast yet. This is the definition of phenomenal musical theatre.
Amen to all of that!
Choreographed by the genius Christopher Chadman (whose story became the character “Greg” in A Chorus Line). He passed away from aids in 95. Spectacular and perennially memorable production. Now THAT’S how you do Jazz Hands!
Walter Bobbie was the whole package: voice, dancing, personality. I'm so glad we have this performance free on UA-cam for everyone to appreciate.
This is the best version of Siddown ever and i mean ever. And you know it from the moment he hits the first big note and bought his dice alonNnNngGG!
"definition of phenomenal". Definitive indeed.
Yes Tara , I wholeheartedly agree 👍 !!!!!!!!!
The fact JK Simmon's facial expressions in this video haven't been memed yet is a tragedy in itself
Good catch.
Wait... thats J.K. Simmons?!?!?!?
J Jonah Jameson, Timon and Pumba doing a musical together
I knew that was him
They are awsome
This revival was done with love down to the last detail. Wonderful production, particularly the incomparable Faith Prince.
I could watch this version 1000 times !!! Whoever disliked this video clearly doesn’t appreciate music. It’s perfect
They're just mad they didn't get to see it live.
I feel so fortunate to have seen this in the opening months! One of the best shows I've ever seen! Faith and Nathan were magical together!
This was the musical that made me love musicals. I used to listen to the cast recording soundtrack from this show all the time as a kid.
Well even though High School Musical made me love musicals as a teenager, my true first experience with classic musical comedy was a middle school production of Guys and Dolls. I was given the first impression from the title the show was going to be about men and toy dolls. LOL I was too distracted by the Bancroft School Auditorium with paintings of different American figures. So much so I was barely paying attention to the show except the happy ending. I had just seen the movie version yesterday and I do hope to give Guys and Dolls another chance sometime.
I was fortunate to see this production in 1992. By far the best show I've ever seen on Broadway!
I live for Jk Simmons' facial expressions
I've seen a lot of shows in my 40 years of theatergoing and this production of Guys and Dolls is a stand out!
+Randy Hess Seeing Nathan Lane on stage in a show would cancel out everything on my bucket list, I suspect.
Agree with you 100 percent. 👍
Everything about this is perfect
Walter Bobbie’s infectious energy and vocals
JK Simmons’ hilarious facial expressions
That soprano’s big high note
The immediate reprise
All the colorful costumes
Peter Gallagher, Josie de Guzman, and Faith Prince looking beautiful
That little bumping dance Nathan Lane does near the end
Without a doubt one of the greatest Tony awards performances of all time
"JK Simmons’ hilarious facial expressions". I know, right? LMAO.
great choreography! great costumes!
tonywendicelives Makes me wish I lived back in 92. Because I loved William Ivey Longs costume designs in Hairspray, Dreamgirls, Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella, Grease Live and Christmas Story Live
THIS is why Guys and Dolls is one of THE greatest musicals ever written.
I love the guy in the gray suit sitting to Nicely-Nicely's right (audience right) at the beginning. His facial expressions are subtle but perfect. Shows how you can communicate without mugging.
I believe the guy in gray is Ernie Sabella, better known as Pumbaa from "The Lion King" - so he and Nathan Lane worked together here before they did the Disney movie. I also remember that he and Nathan Lane recorded their parts together so they could play off each other.
He was also the naked guy on the subway in a well known "Seinfeld" scene.
I remember being so excited to go see this show in 95,,,while walking to the theater i noticed a familiar face walking in front of me it was Peter Gallagher!!! he was with his young son at the time and i didn't want to bother him but man he was a handsome guy. I stood right next to him waiting for the light to change and couldn't believe in an hour i would be watching him up on stage,,,awesome day!!!!
Hello Bethann
I saw this cast/production, and this was one of 3 numbers that literally stopped the show--THREE. (Take Back Your Mink and Sue Me were the others.) A night at the theater I will never forget.
My uncle Herschel (Big Jule) thanks you! :)
Yeah, I saw the production more times than I can count, and there was the 'Crapshooters' Dance' that also brought the house down. I'd sneak into the theatre just to see that and 'Sit Down You're Rockin the Boat.'
@@Jarred2000xyz Not only did I see this production in ‘92 on Broadway; I saw the road show in Pittsburgh two days ago, on 8/12/23, thirty one years after this Broadway revival. And I am so happy to report that Mr. Herschel Sparber is alive and well and again playing Big Jule! What a delight to see him in the role again, after so many years. “Let’s shoot craps!”. ❤
I love, love, love this song. One of the great songs from the Golden Age of Broadway !!!!!!!
I saw this on Broadway when I was 14 (1994). Second to the last row in the balcony. Production blew my mind.
You must have been the luckiest guy ever. I've been avidly attending theatre since I was 14 ten years ago when I saw Wicked at the Pantages. But three years earlier, I saw a middle school production of Guys and Dolls.
My uncle is Big Jule in this production. Herschel Sparber
I love it you can hear Nathan Lane all the way through in the mix whether you like it or not
So much better than the 2009 version...
I agree because I did like how Titus Burgress led the song but this was a little more energetic. I actually saw a middle school production of Guys and Dolls once but I'm not 100% familiar with Sit Down Your Rockin the Boat.
This is so energetic, tight , colorful and fun it makes 2009 look like a high school show
Pretty sure the gentleman in the grey suit by the window is Ernie Sabella who does the voice of Pumbaa and Nathan Lane is of course Timon
You could be right. Last time I saw Sabella in anything was when he guest starred as Raven's teacher on the one episode of That's So Raven where she pretended to be her mom to bail herself out of a parent teacher conference.
lol ok bro Yes
Yep the two Disney actors on broadway
See that guy playing Benny Southstreet...the guy in the purple suit sitting next to Nicely-Nicely...that's JK Simmons...yeah...that's right
I just checked Playbill Vault, that is indeed him!
And great facials too! :D
MrCool2monkey GET. OUT.
I thought so- he has been doing musicals for decades- first time I saw him onstage was with Houston Grand Opera in Carousel. He was awesome.
And the guy sitting next to Big Jule, (who btw, went on to be Sean's uncle in Boy Meets World) is Ernie Sabella, known today as the voice of Pumbaa in The Lion King.
God, I ADORE this!!!
I seriously can’t stop watching and listening to this. I love this so much! ❤️
Everything about this is fantastic! From Walter Bobbie's incredible singing and intrepetation to the direction, choreo, staging, costuming, colors, other singers, etc.
Omg I love the Sit Down Tag! Walter Bobbie wagging his finger and skipping. Hilarious.
I love that move. It's a Lindy Hop / Charleston move... executed brilliantly here by Mr Bobbie who really knows what he's doing!
I was Society Mac in 81 This is the best choreography for this song EVER !!!! You just can't sit still during this !💋💋💋
What a performance by Walter Bobbie and the cast and choreography are magical!
Sorry to have missed this one live
It's an iconic production of a classic masterwork of music theater. I have done it twice and would do it again!
Magnificent!!!! The best cast ever!!!
I love The 'People all sid Beware' sound and sharp hand choreography.
cast = perfect
This just gave me chills. Guys and Dolls is amazing!
II also just realized that at 3:09, the staging & the introduction of the physical elevation of the female singer & the execution of her high notes is -
EXACTLY the same as the conclusion of "Brotherhood of Man," the song from "How To Succeed In Business without Really Trying."
Proof: See, on You Tube, "'How to Succeed...' cast performs 'Brotherhood of Man' on The Today Show," at "5:38."
Good luck with the Mets this year.
o that noble feeling feels like bells are pealing -- you nailed it!
same original writer :) Sometimes you stick with what works!
When I was in my first musical as an ensemble member, I remember my director showing all of us this clip as an example of how much an excellent ensemble can contribute to a number. The choreography and facial expressions from the non-principals are spot on here, especially from Jk Simmons
Don't forget to look for JK Simmons from the Closer (and many other things) sitting right behind Nicely Nicely Johnson (Walter Bobbie.) He's wearing the dark red and white striped suit. Who knew he could dance? Speaking of dance, this choreography is just BRILLIANT! It is a true testament to the late Christopher Chadman. He was an amazing dancer/choreographer. He will be missed.
Walter Bobbie was the best Nicely ever and always will be.
Sorry to contradict you but Sammy Smith was the best Nicely ever. On Broadway and in the movies.
The guy who was Nicely during my school’s production was the best
The original, Stubby Kaye will always hands down be the best! Others will come close, but he will still be the best.
Ummm Stubby Kaye??
Master Cast...they will never be topped
In storms Miles Hutchinson wearing a yellow rain coat. I’m so touched by how hard actors have to grind in theatre for years before they can get a small role on tv or in movies, respect to Steve Ryan.
Freshman year of HS I saw this on Broadway, second to last row in the balcony. Only person I recognized was Ernie Sabella because he was on the first season of Perfect Strangers.
I was there in 1993. I'll never forget this number and a few others.
That note is beautiful! I loved this whole thing!
Whenever I need a dose of pure joy, I return here.
Nathan Lane bringing some quality Jackie Gleason energy during the "Guys and Dolls" at the end, too.
This was the first show I saw on Broadway - Just wonderful. I saw it again in a London a couple years ago too.
Richard Kind played Nathan Detriot there. Nothing like seeing it in person.
Best version of Guys and Dolls HANDS DONW!!
Walter Bobbie as the Nicely Nicely Johnson and Timon and Pumba and J Jonah Jameson in a broadway musical together called Guys and Dolls
I love this number! Fantastic!
I did this show this past spring and came across this videp randonyl and oh god I'm getting nostalgia. It was probably one of the better shows 've been in so far.
And today, JK Simmons is throwing out the first pitch at the Detroit Tigers home game.
The musical premiered on Broadway at the 46th Street Theatre on November 24, 1950. It was directed by George S. Kaufman, with dances and musical numbers by Michael Kidd, scenic and lighting design by Jo Mielziner, costumes by Alvin Colt, and orchestrations by George Bassman and Ted Royal, with vocal arrangements by Herbert Greene. It starred Robert Alda (Sky), Sam Levene (Nathan), Isabel Bigley (Sarah), and Vivian Blaine (Adelaide).
The West End premiere opened at the London Coliseum on May 28, 1953 and ran for 555 performances. The cast starred Vivian Blaine, Sam Levene, Lizbeth Webb and Jerry Wayne. Lizbeth Webb was the only major principal who was British and was chosen to play the part of Sarah Brown by Frank Loesser.
One of Broadways greatest 20th century musicals. Thanks for uploading this video.
The end is amazing.
This choreography is amazing
ONE MORE TIME!!!!
might as well not even be a revival. This brought guys and dolls to the new age
taylor lockhart You don't say
Love the awesome costumes on the guys ❤
Perfection.
Now that was one showstopping performance! Guys and Dolls maybe no Newsies but it's a classic
The color is excellent and so is the clip. I love musicals.
The authoritative production, in my view...
you're going to vote for this one over the production with brando and sinatra? for shame :(
Is there a broadway play that Nathan Lane has not been in? And J.K. Simmons is there too! Not a bad version compared to some of the others on here.
mdteletom 1 Not bad??!! This was hands down the most incredible performance of this number I have ever seen, vastly outperforming every other rendition on UA-cam.
Timon
Pumba
J Jonah Jameson
Doing a broadway musical together
Nathan Lane took his stage name from the lead character of this show specifically so I'm not surprised he got in this show lol
It was a life-affirming experience!
Love this
J Jonah Jameson, Timon and Pumbaa doing a musical together called Guys and Dolls wow that’s incredible to see my favorite characters singing and dancing on stage in Broadway theater history
Wow - never knew JK was in this. I was lucky enough to see this in 1994 with Lane, Prince, etc. I still recall this number.
Top 3 shows Ive ever seen. Very special.
Easily the best version of this song. Bobbie nails it.
great costumes. and i love this guy. great production!
How are you doing Alexa
I play Nicely in my schools production.
I love this song.
I love this cast, I wish someone would upload it here on YT
*that face when you’re doing guys and dolls but you only have one moderately good male singer that’s gonna get sky*
Imagine thinking this ensemble was not exquisite. 🤔🙄
freakin' AWSOME!!!!
Awesome!
The definitive interpretation. None better.
great job
best version EVER
Per-..........wait for it........-fection
I was gonna play Nicely in our school production...Until I had to go in for surgery. I was so upset when I found out, since this was one of the best parts I've ever had. :'(
Nice!
I am playing Nicely Nicely Johnson this summer and this video is great help for my character and this song is amazing!!!
I never thought I would find you here Luke.
I agree BEST EVER!!!!!
Page 205 of the Hamlitome brought me here. This was inspiration for The Room Where It Happened's staging. :)
I have yet to see Hamilton myself but no kidding.
Sara Brown Gus and dolls
Had to play Lieutenant Brannigan back in highschool. Carried a flask with me, between you and me, it wasn't milk.
que coreografía!!!!!
I Loved how the surprise encore was rehearsed ! We had Tom Sinclair as our Nicely. From Broadway he came. He was dating(?) James Mitchell. All My Children's Palmer ! He groped me during Princess Diana's wedding. I almost quit the show. Nut, this Society Max pushed through it ! Hi Nathan !
Had to do a triple take when I saw JK Simmons.
a Dick Tracy style musical with JK Simmons and Nathan Lane? BEST! MUSICAL! EVER!!!
National Theatre 1982......was the best ever.
Is that the incomparable J.K. Simmons in the front row of the gamblers?
gee, I wonder which of the guys in the back is Big Joulie
I wrote out a reply to this, but deleted it when I realized you were being sarcastic. lol
@@oscarphile I saw the national tour of this production. The actor playing Big Jule, Lyle Kanouse, towered over everyone else in the cast!
That guy is my uncle Herschel. He scared the hell outta me until I hit high school. Gentle giant, pushing 80, but still going strong. :)
@@Jarred2000xyz I never worked with him, but I saw him in several local productions here in Nashville before he moved away. I'm really tall (I've played Big Jule before myself), but he had me beat by a couple of inches.
Timmon and Pumba.
best version
Walter Bobbie was absolutely robbed of a Tony nomination for this
Luckily he’d win for directing Chicago into a few years later
that is the best version.
This isn't one of his early roles. He'd already been around for years and had won a tony by the time this role came along. I believe his Broadway debut was a full 10 years before this.
nathan lane?
If they revive this again, I'd love it if Nathan Lane played Nicely Nicely!
I love this performance. I remember watching it live during the Tony's when I was young. I swear, my affection for this performance helped confirm the fact that I'm gay.
This is the most soulless Nicely Nicely I've ever seen
