  • Do you hear a clicking sound when your Subaru warms up, particularly when turning? If it happens when turning at low speeds in both directions, it’s probably not the CV axles, it’s probably the center diff. Check out this video to learn how to replace it.

    The 38913AA230 centre diff weighs 4.5 kilograms or about 10 pounds.
    You do NOT need to drop the gearbox to replace the centre diff.
    They are relatively straight forward to replace with the gearbox in the vehicle.

      We have done it without removing the gearbox as well, in this video we knew we wanted to do the clutch anyway, so we did it this way.
      Glad you mentioned this though, and great timing! We're going to be posting another video showing the other method soon. Stay tuned!

    You know... you can change the center diff without dropping the trans. Just need to remove the exhaust and drive shaft.

    In your opinion, would the paper gasket made for the t-case be a better option than silicone?
    Good work! Tackling the same thing on my saabaru 92x , just not pulling the trans haha

    • @NiceGuysGASS
      @NiceGuysGASS  3 місяці тому

      Either one will probably work, when we took ours apart, the tail section was sealed with silicone. The transfer case to transmission was sealed with paper. That’s how we reassembled it in the end.

    Is this job relatively the same as a auto transmission?
    We have the same year and model. Just had trans rebuilt and getting torque binding. Local mechanics said its the center differential.

    Is it possible without removing the transmission?

      Yes! And that video is being edited as we speak. It is not particularly easy with the transmission in though. Stay tuned.

      It’s a 2012 Outback 6MT. We’re pretty sure based on our research most of them are the same for a generation. We’ll update the title.

    did you replace any other bearings in the center diff housing ? Did you reuse the same shims ?

    • @NiceGuysGASS
      @NiceGuysGASS  4 місяці тому

      We did not replace any bearings, but there are 2 that might need to be replaced. They are both on the output shaft. There were no shims to reuse.

      @@NiceGuysGASS oh weird. on the 5MT there is shims behind both bearing races on the output shaft. I also replaced the bearing on the other end of the center differential. the bearing that bolts to the end cover. I know I drove mine for a while needing a center differential because I didn't have the money to do the job for awhile and when I had time and money to do it, I had about 1/8" of slop in the output shaft bearings.

    • @NiceGuysGASS
      @NiceGuysGASS  4 місяці тому

      That is probably true, it’s been a while. And replacing bearings is never a bad idea.

    I have a 2004 Impreza 5-speed manual with 156,000 miles. I started getting random clicking that I can feel in the stick shift handle. It does it cold too thoguh.
    I bought the car recently and didnt check the manual transmission oil beause I wasn't aware I could. It was 1.75 quarts low. It holds 3.75 quarts so it had 2 qts in the oil pan. But the oil is super black, like 10,000 mile diesel motor oil and smells a little burnt perhaps. Refilling to Full made the clicking much better, but it didn't go away completely. Manual clutch oil was and is full and clean.
    Do you think I've toasted the transmission? What should I do? Flush the tranny oil a few times? Use any additives? Thanks!

    • @NiceGuysGASS

      The clicking is almost definitely a worn out center diff. It needs to be replaced.

    I think this is what wrong with my 2012 6 speed Subaru. Does the whole engine jiggle when you turn as well, along with the clicking noise? I replaced the axles twice, once with cheap Napa axles then with Subaru axles, I thought it was the cheap Napa after market parts but maybe it’s the center differential?

    • @NiceGuysGASS
      @NiceGuysGASS  6 місяців тому

      It’s probably the center diff. If it is clicking when you turn both ways and you’re getting a full car shutter, this is the problem. Make sure you swap the bearings inside while you’re in there. We made the mistake of not swapping them and had to take everything apart and swap them out a few months later.

      For us, we're simple and just use the gear oil straight from the bottle. Change at recommended intervals, and carry on.
      We're not scientists, can't say for sure whether this additive will help (or hurt). If you want to use it and you believe it will help, full send! It's your car, your money, your choice. If you go this route, we'd be curious to hear the results
