      +TheDestroyer73 I agree with that,and the pay to win misrepresentations need to stop,you need to EARN the good in game stuff instead of buying them with your real money,I hate it because in Halo 5, Clash of Clans and Roblox players can do 'better' than me because they bought the good stuff instead of earning it

    I think consumers play a larger role than you might think. So many people have been inundated with this idea that they actually have to buy every release of COD or Halo. When I talk to these people I almost I never hear how satisfied they were with the last entry, only how stoked they are for a new one. I think brand loyalty has a lot to do with it. I mean Assassin's Creed hasn't been good for ages, and yet they push huge numbers without issue. I think the market needs to shake this idea that you have to support your favorite series until the end of time. People need to stop being loyal to brands, and start being loyal to quality and effort.

      +Avalanche Reviews I for one knew that after the first two Mario RPGs games on the 3DS that I would not be buying them anymore despite my love for the series prior. I'll always have the older games that I love and I'd love to buy another one from Nintendo if they turn out great in the future but it just doesn't look like that'll happen any time soon.

      +Avalanche Reviews What so bad about Brand Loyalty? If a company keep making good games depending of your interest of course you will keep buying the games they make, hell I bet you do that too.

    • @expcake
      @expcake 8 років тому +51

      The keyword there is "good." It's not the concept of brand loyalty itself that's bad, it's the market's over-dependence on said concept that can often be bad (and how often the public buys into it).

    Im so sickk of open world games and games that are marketed as having a huge world with so many things to do... Hearing that sounded awesome back in the day.. But now It's just meaningless.. So many games just cram the map with collectables and bullshit copy-pasted side missions, making them NOT fun to play at all.. Instead they feel like a chore.. And it shouldn't be like that..

    • @DigitalHaze65536

      Not only aren't the open worlds dense enough, but they're not actually that big anyway. The scale of the mountains is made to make them look bigger than they really are. Even though they may seem to be a chore to climb in game, think about a real mountain in the Alps, Andes, Himalaya, ect. It can take anywhere from the entire day, to many days of climbing just for one mountain. (yes I know the expeditions can take a month but that is a lot of time sitting around acclimating and doing things other than actually climbing) In games like Skyrim and BOTW you go up the height of one tree and it goes from warm and green to an arctic climate lol. (it takes many thousands of feet to do that)
      If you scaled a big mountain in real life into that "huge" open world map, scaled to Link size......somewhere in the low 5 foot range, they'd take up the entire map if not several maps. (or think of it this way......around Denver you can see the mountains and they look like they are right there........but you have to drive like an hour at 65 miles an hour to reach many of them......how long would it take to WALK from Denver to the actual 13,000-14,000+' peaks? surely way more time than it takes Link to walk across the whole map lol)

    Just remember, out of 100 indie titles, it's not unlikely for there to be only 1 or 2 that are worth your time. Don't praise indie as the savior of gaming, because most of them are ripping off others and many many of them are so poorly made that you'll be lucky to get any enjoyment out of them. Then there's the 'indie' titles that are made by classic developers on a crowdsourcing budget that just outright lie to us about the final result.
    I'm looking at you Mighty no. 9 and No Man's sky.

      Fox Doe Age plays a factor I've been gaming for 20 years now started when I was 5 . In my teens year I would say that was the most fun I had while playing video games. At the age of 16 I had a job and bought an Xbox 360 elite and bought all the games I ever wanted. Fast forward now to the present I'm 25 current Gen games are redundant and nothing new and exciting. I find myself buying 1 to 2 games a year were in my teens I would buy an average of 5 games a year. Being an adult you have more priorities and less time to game.

      Onur K good and fun gameplay > immersive story. You can have a game with a great story, but if the gameplay is pure shit then the whole game falls apart. But you can have a game with amazing gameplay and a mediocre story and still be fun (Like Dragon's Dogma). If all you want is a good, and immersive story, then read a book or watch a movie.

    • @lonedrifter9879
      @lonedrifter9879 7 років тому +24

      Onur is spot on, Steven seem to forgot titles like Halo, Half Life, and Morrowind, Games need both Stories AND fucking Gameplay, miss one and the game either becomes a book, or a competitive COMMERCIALIZED bullshit, even games like Doom or System Shock have CANCEROUS communities, where one want the New Prey to be more like Doom, or the other want to keep the VERY dull System shock mechanics, while the Cancelled Prey 2 is neither of these. Seriously, Steven is an IDEOLOGIST then a gamer. We have gamers that act like FUCKING MOMS nowadays that say a game HAS TO BE ONE thing only while many iconic games are made up with EVERY combine elements, even things people thought they hate.

      Recent titles to hit the spot with respect to gameplay AND immersion include Evil Within, Witcher 3, I'd put Bloodborne and Nioh in there too.
      I agree that such games are perhaps in the minority and generally eclipsed by the likes of Fifa, CoD and BattleFront - games which I ignore completely.
      That said, there are great titles coming out.

      That's a good point, most gamers care about run-n-shoot more than original games, games like cod get the highest profits while one of the most unique games such as LA Noir thrown in the trash, indeed, if companies feel that the audience are more into intelligent games they would care about the quality of their product, but the majority into stupid games, so the companies treat them like herd.

    I think media in general has become very serious and hard boiled. Everything has to be perfect, no one wants to be looked down. If you watch and action movie from the 90's or 80's they are way more goofy and aren't affraid of not taking themselves too seriously, as opposed to today's movies where every action movie is grey, lifeless and dull. And what's ironic is that the formula those older action movies followed was better, they were more smartly designed. If you compare FPS games from 20 years ago to the ones of today, that's exacly what happened. But it's funny that in 70's it was a little bit more like today. Just watch the Dirty Harry movies or some westerns to get the picture. So I think this could also be a cultural thing and not exclusive to games.

    • @miguelpereira9859
      @miguelpereira9859 7 років тому +20

      This also happened with Eletronic music. In the late 90's early 2000's they were way more goofy, but also more cheered up and positive, where as today's Deep House in particular just depresses me. I have no idea how people can dance to that.

      I am the one who flocks I kinda enjoy some genres like Big Room, but imo some Trance classics are some of the best songs ever made. They just have so much heart and feeling put into them. They gave the impression that the artist genuinly cared, where today stuff just feels much more low effort and industrial. Like they just want to stay relevant.

      Focus groups, sir, focus groups. Those 80's and 90's achievements were the result of a person or group of people doing what made *them* happy. Everything we have today is a result of people or groups of people doing what their *focus groups* tell them will work. Thus, "better not offend anyone", "better not have it be too challenging" "better not make it too dark" "better have a lot of explanation" "simple graphics and icons no one likes to have read or think!" and many plethora of other 'compromises' political correctness yields us.

      I first noticed this when call of duty began cranking out titles ad nauseum, and developers started talking about making games like movies, this translated to me that gameplay would be taking a backseat and would no longer be the nucleus of gaming and more so just a means to an end.

    games started to lose their entertainment value little by little with the advancement of graphics. The more realistic graphics games get, the more game creators will abandon elements that make a game a game and steer towards an interactive film. Games now have too many cutscenes and not enough gameplay. Button pressing prompts sequences are also terrible! DLC also kills games. I wish I could buy a game and say I own 100% of it. Instead games are released unfinished (buggy and sometimes unplayable) and the rest of the material comes out later through DLC.

      The idea that a game is an interactive film is not wrong. Since a big draw of games is to let you be the hero of the story, realistic graphics and life-simulating gameplay makes for a more immersive experience. Of course, you have a point, Innovative gameplay suffers from resources and time spent on graphics and cinematic cutscenes. Still, I may have more fun playing a simple-looking game with great gameplay, but a game with great graphics and simple gameplay is a more interesting experience.

    This isn't the first bandwagon in the game industry. Before the open world wave, there were hordes of Pong clones, mascot platformers, and first-person shooters. AAA games become so homogenized and sterile because customers keep buying them. The customer is always right, so decreasing sales is the quickest way to wake a company up and prompt them to think up a new way to draw in consumers. Fortunately, the growing indie scene is a force that pushes creativity in the industry as a whole.

    While the problem isn't as pronounced as with film and music, I'd say games suffer a similar issue. If I think back to the 90s, you had innovative, ground breaking games being made by small devs which went onto become global mainstream hits. One that always sticks out for me is the original Tomb Raider. A tiny team at Core Design in the UK have complete creative license and practically invent 3rd person action adventure games in a 3d world. That just couldn't happen now. Similarly to film and music back then, studios and record labels took risks on new ideas and backed talent. Now all entertainment media is extremely risk averse. So AAA is basically just massive dev houses churning out the same games with different skins.

    There are over 100 Mario games, which is the very reason why I grew tired of it. They are in no way bad games, but I genuinly don't see the point of buying them anymore. If I want to play one, playing an older one is cheaper and won't drastically change my experience from the newest one and I long ago cut the emotional ties to that franchise.
    On a similar matter...yeah...a lot of video games seem copy pasted nowadays, but take off the nostalgic glasses and you'll realize that the domination of "copied concepts" was present in each generation. Just that for some obvious reasons, "History" doesn't remember them and so do our brain.

      If anything, FO4 was actually one of the best games in those 6 years, even if it did have a worse dialogue system than FO3.
      But no, I play nearly every game that comes out. MGSV had solid core gameplay, but nothing else to it. FF15 didn't even have good gameplay, and nothing else to it, and a trolltastic loading-screen-car. Last of Us is probably the clunkiest anti-stealth game ever made, with a painfully generic story. Witcher 3 has some of the worst gameplay ever developed, all as broken as its parody horse. Roughly 10,000 DayZ clones and PvParenas have popped up, none of them have been even remotely good, including Overwatch. Mass Effect 3 was lacking in every category compared to ME2. The Arkham series went downhill after City. Assassins Creed games have become so bad and muddled that I wouldn't even qualify the latest one as an AC game.
      Majority of the games in recent years, that have been considered GOTY material, would have been candidates for WorstGOTY in better times.
      The only good AAA game I've played in as long as I can remember, was Uncharted 4, and its not like that was the greatest game of all time, just far better than anything else in recent years.

    If you buy a yearly release game like COD every year, or every Ubisoft open world game that comes out, and then play them for thousands of hours every year, of course you're going to get burnt out and bored with them. Games do innovate and evolve, but people play everything to death and spend so much time playing video games that companies can't innovate fast enough. They're not lazy, you just over-consume. There's nothing stopping you from not buying everything that comes out and taking breaks. Bored of Assassin's Creed or Call of Duty? Don't buy the new one every year. Too many open world games? Don't buy all of them and try to play them all for 300 hours.
    People who don't buy everything, try different genres, or limit their playtime and enjoy gaming in moderation don't have this issue. Maybe you should try that.

      @TheArnoldification 7 років тому +1

      I see what you're saying but I don't think that's the precise issue. Just using myself as an example, my only hobby is gaming. Only on several occasions have I received burnout for games (specifically dark souls). Generally speaking I am fine if a game isn't "the best". I care about the positive aspects of a game way more than I do its flaws and, as a result, I seem to always be able to find something I can enjoy.
      I don't think I am an outlier by any means. I just think people like myself who can find enjoyment easier are underrepresented because we don't have anything to complain about.

      Solar Coffee, are you sure the games weren't intended to be played a lot. I mean, games have become like an art form and an entire lifestyle. I think when games became very immersive, they became kind of like vacation spots. Like, hey, have you been to Hawaii? Have you been to Machu Picchu? Have you been to Skyrim and Mario World? They're immersive and they're a type of destination. And playing a game is like going on vacation.
      Isn't that what games are, now that they've become somewhat reminiscent of real life.

    • @danicalifornia1665
      @danicalifornia1665 7 років тому

      clear mist Yeah but you go on vacation one or two weeks a year, and there's lots of people who play videogames every day. I think what the original comment meant, was that, like everything, video games get boring when they become a habit instead of that sort of "vacation" you mentioned.
      I, for example, play video games once or twice a week for a few hours and I still enjoy them quite a bit.

    • @clearmist7170

      Dani California So, it's just about quantity and scarcity? Like if you eat too much of your favorite food, it's not good anymore? That's interesting. What about people that like to travel all the time? They don't seem to get tired of it, or maybe they do.
      Maybe traveling and video gaming are both recreations that take you away form work/day-to-day life and both can be seen as "wastes of time." They both take you away from the other life experiences that you could have. I guess, it just means that you should find the places you travel to and the games that you play worth your time. Something that you can look back on and really enjoy. Maybe that's what it's about.

    • @danicalifornia1665
      @danicalifornia1665 7 років тому +2

      I think so, yeah. I've been through periods where I've played games everyday, and I don't miss it at all.
      I think that having only one hobby that you do a lot is a bad idea in general, imo. Gets old pretty quickly. But travelling is different. It's a more diverse experience every time, you meet people, get to know different places in person. Besides it requires more personal investment, planning, spending money, stress. Games require just turning on the PC or the console and playing.

    For Me, personally, video games were always fun until after I played Fallout 3 & Oblivion. My favorite games were always Chrono Trigger (SNES), some N64 & DreamCast, Half-Life (& mods Team fortress, cstrike, sven coop, etc...) & Diablo 1 -2 . These were pretty much the only games i played ( i never really had consoles) . I didnt really game thru the years of 2004-2008, but when i got a new PC and Fallout 3 and Oblivion, it changed my life. i skipped class, i stayed up for days playing these games. The Open world, the FPS/RPG elements, was everything I ever wanted in a game. Then after years of playing these games, (2008-2011) i got bored of gaming altogether. I still play games, but I feel like i'm just chasing the dragon most of the time. MEh... anyway i still play Fallout new vegas ( my favorite), and PAth of exile (diablo 1-2 clone) , and old half life mods. new games never really interest me for too long. Im hoping this new generation of games coming our way will make things more interesting.

I took step back and said that I shouldn't buy that many games anymore and decided that if I want to buy a new game I should finish also a one from my backlog. This way I had to put more thought into what I want to buy and less titles meant more time to get to know the the games I already own and purchase. I've found a new appreciation for games after that.

      Well, that's fair. But don't you feel some games use the same design at some point.
      Like when is somebody going to produce something new? That is well known.
      All I can think off of the top off my head is Cod, BF, Mario, RB6, Pubg, Fortnite, Witcher 3, Assasins creed, Far cry, Halo, Skyrim, Dark souls, Elden ring.
      What I often notice is that beloved games, get a new release of that game that is similar but different.
      And there are some releses that come up nowdays, like Indie games. Lot's of them I love. They are always nice, but never heavy hitters like games back in the day. Always get's me intrested, never makes me want to stay too long.
      And at what point do you get tired of doing what the game asks you to do, like a quest, and instead do something of your own free will.
      Because that's what we do irl, we do what we want to do, and if somebody tells us what to do it feels like work in many cases.
      being restricted is a terrible feeling and one that often come in games nowadays.
      That's why I quit gaming, because I felt the games were restricting my ability to keep improving more.
      It's nice to have a story and I loved The Witcher 3. But at one point I stopped, not beacuse I did not like the game, but beacuse the story was over and there were only side quests left.

      You're right. People always tend to think the present is worse than the past, even though objectively speaking, it's usually the opposite. It's a common phenomenon noticable in most people, where they blame the outside world for a change that occurs entirely within them.
      This is an unfortunate side effect of getting older. At a certain point you realise you've seen it all before and the things that once seemed new and exciting now seem old and boring.
      Which leaves you with two options. Complain about how things aren't how they used to be, or find new things to enjoy or enjoy them in a different way.

      I've been going to the movies regularly for a couple of decades now and sure, there are good years and bad years, but I personally don't see any noticable decline in general. Or perhaps you believe all movies in the past were great. But they weren't, because there were just as many stinkers as there are now. The only difference is that most of them have been forgotten.

    Triple A died in 2007. That was around the time where all gen 6 games stopped being released and gen 7 games became the only option. That's also when gaming ended a large experimental phase that began with the release of Doom in 1993. That being the jump to 3D. In the 90's, every series had to jump to 3D thanks to the releases of Doom, Quake, and Mario 64. This meant that stagnation for a series wasn't possible because they had to do something new whether they wanted to or not. Meaning that in the late 90's, no matter what we got, it was a unique experience Then came gen 6 and that's when the lessons of the 90's started to take hold, and games started refining their mechanics, their gameplay ideas, aesthetics, etc, into something cohesive and truly whole. This resulted in very powerful titles like Halo, GTA III, Half-life 2, Guitar Hero 2, Shadow of the Colossus, Psychonauts and a million other games you could probably name. Then Gen 7 started and "refining" was all that series had left that they could do. By 2007, most games were following the same basic templates for game design and quickly running each one into the ground. 2007 wasn't the exact moment that experimentation stopped with triple A, but it was the exact moment where it was clear that there was nowhere left that they could go. It's when budgets got too big, teams got too big, audiences got too big, etc, for them to overhaul any of their development decisions that they knew had already worked.
    Personally I stopped playing games around 2008 or 2009 because I saw the trend. For the most part I haven't played any games since 2007, and I don't regret my decision because I'm still right about games not being able to figure their shit out. A major exception to the rule is Hotline Miami, which is an incredible game and somewhat of an oasis in the current gen of games.

      for the record, the vast majority of gamers have far, far different tastes in games from myself. Like, people can very rarely find a game to recommend for me that'll turn out to be successful, because my tastes are very hard to figure out.
      Dark Souls, to me, doesn't seem like it's pushing games in the right direction tbh. If it were, then there'd only be one game in the series, or the games would be extremely different from each other.

    • @MalmroseProjects
      @MalmroseProjects 8 років тому

      *****"looked up what interested you about it" nothing about Dark Souls interests me. I don't really care for the setting, gameplay, genre, tone, artistic intentions, etc. Bloodborne is closer than any of the other games to something I'd want to play but I can tell I probably wouldn't think it's anything more than "decent".
      The only reason I even talk about Dark Souls ever, is because people constantly try to sell me on the game, almost as if people think that it isn't ok to dislike Dark Souls, that you're a bad gamer or have shit taste if you don't like this one series among thousands of series.

    • @MalmroseProjects
      @MalmroseProjects 8 років тому +3

      *****
      so because I said that nothing about dark souls interests me, you decided to start acting condescending, literally stating that you "look down on me"? I think ya oughta get your priorities in check, because looking down on someone based on an opinion over a game and that game's fanbase is very peculiar, and a much more accurate example of being "petty".
      The sad thing is that you're proving my point that I'm not allowed to like Dark Souls in peace without having people act like pricks about it.
      "I don't care for Dark Souls and I'm not interested in playing it" "ok, that's fine that you feel that way, I personally enjoy the series but it's not for everyone". - this is how a conversation that isn't rooted in elitism would go. If your end goal is to get people to think and feel like you, then you would respond exactly the way you did, rather than just simply not caring and not even bothering to reply. In other words, you're demonstrating my point that Dark Souls fans push their favorite series onto people instead of having a "live and let live" mentality. It's true of other series as well but not nearly to the same degree as the Souls series. Nobody who's a big fan of "Harvest Moon" for example is going around shoving their game on people. And that's another game I have no interest in, but fans of that series don't get offended by someone not sharing that same love/interest.
      I don't look down on Dark Souls fans because I don't look down on anyone. I don't really know what looking down on someone accomplishes, but congratulations for feeling better than me over a video game series I guess?
      I'm kind of blindsided by your reaction lol, mostly because it's very ironic of you to "now look down" on someone by placing yourself as the one who obsessively cares what other people think about your favorite series.

    Because we are older? I have a cousin who has a lot of fun with games like minecraft and rocket league, he is 13 years old. Back when I had 13, I had fun with the super nes playing stupid simple games like Alladin, Top Gear, biker micers from mars, etc.. Not even Link to the past or Mario World, more "complex" games, it was just these simple games that where also generic copies. Willing or not, this hobby is aimed to children. You can make a adult game like Last of Us, or use gore and adult themes in games like Max Payne... It doesn't matter, the hobby is more appealing for kids or people who don't have a social life. Right now I am busy with college and work, more and more my time is being consumed by those factors, I didn't have so much fun with recent AAA games. Games like Deus-Ex (extremelly well done, but I had to abandon it to cover college last november and I didn't touch it since, I don't even remember the story anymore) or the new Tomb Raider (this game is like a thematic disney attraction, completely on rails). Playing sport games since forever, this was the first year that I didn't played NBA 2K, etc... I mean, I believe more and more people are simply getting tired with the constant repetition or they simple don't have time to spare.

      Arcade games: Crawl, Vertical Drop Heroes, Lethal League, Crypt of the Necrodancer, Hotline Miami 1 and 2, Enter the Gungeon, EDF 4.1, Hero Siege, and Rock of Ages. All of these games have couch co op as well except Hotline Miami. Also look forward to Windjammers and EDF 5.

      You cited multiple sequels, direct or indirect sequels, spiritual sequels, etc.. I don't even need to read the whole thing, I had glimpses of Tekken 7 and Kingdom Hearts for example, many solid numbers scattered as well. It's redundant. Also the hypocrisy, how can you to talk about different "types" or new genres if you used sequels as examples? There is no magic game or specific genre that can attract people back for this hobby, this is a tricky situation. I just presented my scenario, I am not saying old people are prohibited to play Minecraft. You have your own scenario. It's nice to see someone excited with the future and I am also 24 years old. But in the end, you have to consolidate your argument. Just tossing around names is not something wise, especially considering some of the names. Again, Tekken...? how can you use tekken as an example?

    This is my 2cents on gaming in today's era. Its not as fun as it used to be for many many factors and this varies from person to person. for me personally life itself gets in the way of truly enjoying the experience compared to when I was a kid. those days only real responsibility u had was your school homework and some chores. being an adult in the gaming scene is totally different. You need to consider realistically pricing of games, then you have ur work, relationships, managing expenses etc and u don't get to truly sit down and game. usually in the back of my mind I'll be thinking about the things I still need to do or pay etc or I'll be oh damn I forgot i need to get presents for this bday or damn car servicing is coming up or this huge project I'm working on needs my attention etc. Now that is one part of the story for me. The other part is that most games today are just simply either movie like experiences with almost no gaming aspect to it. now I enjoy my movie like experiences lots but why can't there be a combination of both? they tend to stray too far from the actual gaming experience and concentrate on lifelike movie styled scenes etc. now all these things do have its place in gaming. I just think they very unbalanced and games are made so mainstream now that it's only about sales and nothing else. Another part of why I find gaming to be not as fun as before is the fact that I think people concentrate too much on wanting constant innovation that it holds one back from actually enjoying the game for what it originally is. example: F1 racers don't need new innovations other than improving on the things that make F1 games great. sure minute innovations can be added but people seem to want such big innovations to keep them interested that they tend to forget why they enjoyed it in the first place. Now for me it's simple. I can play game often and have fun if it has this rough ratio: 40% Story, 50% gameplay and 10% innovations (includes graphic enhancements etc. As long as a game has a super interesting story and fun gameplay then that's all that matters to me. I dont need them to push out a sequel where they going to add 100 new sub missions etc. Id much rather have 10 new submissions that is of high story quality and gameplay than the usual collect 10 000 journal entries etc. Thats my 2 cents.

    It costs too much in tedium to make HD and "realistic" games., which is also why split screen staples like in Halo were abandoned. They've sacrificed core features in many games just to keep up with graphics. When was the last time a really good arcade racer like Rush or the never ported Overdrive come out? Those are fun as heck and an ESCAPE from reality which is where it all started.
    NOW they produce these things like it's a movie with "character development" and the often empty and time consuming 'open environment'. I think games SHOULD be limited to a scope of being FUN FIRST with a focus rather than realistic. There are some good DLC games but the center niche of the GREAT arcade style games has really been abandoned. Games CAN be way to time consuming anymore to ever pick up. I like to get on, have fun, then set it down with the option of sharing a couch with some friends or family instead of the now DEAD HORSE of shooting strangers online.
    Solution:
    1. Charecter development is for the obsessed gamer, if the gameplay doesn't ROCK then it's superfluous. A good story...OK, but not catering to the troll crowd that constantly complains about those things, there is a silent and calm majority out there.
    2. Cut back the graphics, light flaring and arm hair if need be to bring back local gaming so we can share with our REAL LIFE friends and family. Look at Minecraft, the graphics are garbage and it sold like hotcakes.
    3. Games create vibes, and I feel that alot developers aren't having that much fun anymore AND IT SHOWS. With budgets and storylines and superfans with far too much time to nitpick, it's a wonder they get these monsterous games out at all. Nintendo seems to have the best vibe I have to say, Too bad they've shooed away alot of developers with underpowered hardware for over a decade.

    I'm glad people are talking about this topic, because it's TRUE. I am glad there are a few passionate developers left standing. I was worried for Pokemon Sun & Moon, and most certainly for Final Fantasy 15's 10 YEAR development span. Turns out, these games just continue reinventing themselves in new & refreshing ways. Sun & Moon backed away from the "Pokemon formula" since Gen 1, of battling the 8 gym leaders to become the world champion. The games also added a whole lot of new Pokemon, Z-Moves, uniquely typed Pokemon, Alohan Forms, and much more! As for Final Fantasy? A few minor flaws in the elemancy and summoning systems, but a game so fun and massive that it feels just shy of a masterpiece.

    DLC, constant online dependance, cutting the story in order to make a sequel, making visuals monotone instead of unique per game, making most main characters share a lot of aspects (male white guy with gun, sexy white girl with gun, soldier), re releasing the same game as many times as possible (Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Skyrim, Pokemon series), the nostalgia factor... I find all of this responsible for videogames turning into mere cashgrabs (I mean, they're products, of course they've always been cashgrabbers, but at least some videogames used to have extra content and presents for the player to discover and enjoy instead of forcing you to pay extra cash or to buy countless sequels to know what happened since the first game).

The burden of choice has always been completely on the shoulders of the consumer. Games stop being fun when you stop buying fun games. Anyone that thinks the industry is getting worse lives in a very tiny box and is afraid to venture out.

    This is a universal problem for the whole world. All industries are stale. The movie industry is just as generic and stale as the game industry. All these romance, horror, and action movies ive especislly noticed are clones. Creativity isnt as limitless as ppl make it out to believe, and super creative ideas with anything is expensive and risky as hell. But openworld games are going to be similar regardless, same with platformers, shooters, etc. Only reason Just Cause 3 gets praise for the wingsuit is because other developers have strangely lacked the feature in their games. This is a very lucky situation. But do you really expect more innovative crafting mechanics, grappling hooks, racing, etc? The reality we live in hardly innovates with all the themes it has, so expecting other games and movies and etc to do 180s is ignorantly naive.
    If animals breed to create new species, itll be default similar to the already existing ones because of shared features. Trillions of people exist, but a lot of us still look similar AND act similar to each other ("you remind me of this person" is a common phrase). Different flavors of drinks and foods are still like their original counterparts.
    Point: There is no such thing as "brand new" and large innovation. Templates exist for a reason. Creativity is overrated. Even if people try to be creative, they by coincidence make similar products regardless. You hear how devs/authors say they didnt know their chars, stories, etc were like this from others, yet it still happens. Thats just one obvious case. With OR WITHOUT inspiration, were going to have similar or clone things, because so many things have been created and combined that there isnt much left to do without it feeling similar.

      Aura Guardian I'm not sure about the movie industry, but I can think of countless possible innovations that I would make to my favourite videogame series. I mean, just the simple fact that the destruction system in Red Faction Guerilla (which came out almost a decade ago) is not commonplace in games, or the Euphoria physics engine (especially as utilized in GTA IV and Max Payne 3) has also been rarely used. IMO, these systems should be the foundation of every modern action game

    Becoming an adult with a more rational mind we can see games for what they are. We can see the boundaries and limitations within them thus restricting a grown ups emersion. Greedy crappy companies pushing loot boxes and over priced currencies are another killer of fun, either reminding you how much more money everyone has than you or just out right pestering us.
    Thankfully there are still companies creating games like the witcher and horizon, who clearly give a sh*t.

    Fallout New Vegas is probably the only modern game that i've played for like 100 hours. used to play WoW for like 8 years and didn't liked the new expansion so i stopped playing it. Hyper Light Drifter is one of the best new game that i heavily invested my time into. played for like 30 hours and the actual gameplay is only 6 hours or so. Not for a casual gamer though since the gameplay mechanics can be pretty deep. I think i prefer games with short playtime that doesn't sacrifice skill ceiling like Hotline Miami and HLD.

      Not a single game that I play fills my screen with tips and buttons all the time. Most of the games tell you how to use a mechanic once and then those tips disappear for good. You can even choose what type of advice you want sometimes. Lately I've played Witcher 3, Dark Souls 3, Bloodborne, Rome 2: Total War, Metal Gear V, and they don't do that. Maybe Ratchet and Clank did it, and it is the most "childish" of all the ones I've mentioned.

    Games developers seem more interested in churning out easy-to-do sequels rather than concentrating on new and imaginative gaming ideas and concepts. I personally had more fun on the Nintendo 64 and playstation 1 than I have ever had on any of the next generation consoles. Having people in the same room as me when beating their ass at Goldeneye or getting my ass whooped at MarioKart.....That was what made gaming great. I admit as a 34 year old I am getting too old for gaming now...I currently play Command and Conquer Red alert on PC and Skyrim on xbox 1. However after Shenmue 3 and Final Fantasy remake.....I think I will no longer buy anymore computer games. I think the Final Fantasy remake will be the final nail in the coffin for my gaming life....

That way if you lost and one of them was talking shit you could at least blast him in the arm as hard as you could which would turn into a brawl and everyone would laugh and\or possibly jump in. Now its just kids acting like snarky cunts over a headset.

    0:33 "It's largely why time seems to speed up as you age". Time has literally sped up my friend. Look at your computer clock. The seconds do not tick away at the same intervals. Count Mississippi for each number, & you'll see it will speed up & slow down. I'm not joking about this. I can't believe anyone hasn't seen this.

    • @jimross3593
      @jimross3593 7 років тому +1

      No, the reason why counting Mississippi is a cultural standard for counting seconds, is because of how accurate it is that you'll get the seconds exactly right. Same with counting 1 one-thousand, 2 one-thousand, 3 one-thousand ect. If you look at clock in the lower right part of your screen, & click on it, you'll see the seconds (long hand) ticker will literally jump an extra second really fast at times, but have hang time for other seconds (like it use too for every second). Look at it closely, you'll see some seconds sped up.

    We're all getting older basically. And we realize how time wasting it is to spend hundred of hours in computer simulation, while we still has many obligation to do in the real world, unlike when we were kids, when we have tons of time and so little worries because our parents do everything while we just sat there playing video games.
    Games also becoming much bigger these days, which means more hour is needed while most of us don't even have one. that's probably why we dont find gaming as fun as it was before.

    Well, at least Persona 5, Bloodborne, Yakuza 0/6, Mario Odyssey, Arms and Cuphead were pretty good. I think the problem with games nowadays is that the majority are mostly either: 1)a game trying to catch up on current popular trends like Battle Royale and Open world games, 2)cinematic games that felt like it would have been less of a chore if they just made it as a tv or netflix series, 3)cashgrabs, or 4)games with bigger emphasis on pay to win practices.
    But honestly, there ARE fun games. You just have to keep digging in order to find those buried gems.
