Whoever mixed deserves a medal. Clean, punchy, crunchy, raw - plenty of bite so you feel it's a live performance, but still enough clarity to hear what's going on. Excellent job!
Totally agree. It started a little rough, but the vocals did something to the overall pitch and it coalesced into a solid unit. I really dig the wailing parts that are working constantly under the chords. I don't know if fans will think this is insulting as a comparison, but Coheed and Cambria do a similar thing in A Favor House Atlantic specifically. It's more of an Emo trait that started with bands like Hawthorne Heights. To be fair, Aerosmith invented it, but Ford invented the Assembly line, not cars in general, so while connected, they are different enough to be a branch rather than further down the trunk, if that makes sense. Thrice REALLY takes advantage of that style in this one. Sure, A Favot House Atlantic has a similar thing, but Black Honey is lyrically the lamentation and cognitive dissonance of the protagonist. Lamentation is wailing, which is clearly audible in the swells of the guitar riff. It isn't just wailing, but it is straight up the sound of a man who is broken and crying for his dog, child, or spouse. There is even the breath in between sobbing with a rise and fall at each end. Maybe it's easier to picture a mom holding the lifeless body of her son in the minutes after he was hit by a stray bullet. Kind of a "wwWWWWHHHHHHYyyy!! (inhale) wwWWWWHHHYYYYyyyy!!! (inhale)" sound you only hear when a person is so far beyond grief that they aren't conscious of their surroundings or onlookers. The best part, though, is the use of underlying discordant riffs. They weave the cognitive dissonance into the tapestry of sound. The guitarist is too quiet compared to everyone else. That would normally be a mistake, but it's intentional for this song. See, discordant notes will sound louder to us because they don't fit in the chords and demand our attention. When you focus on a guitar solo, the other instruments seem to fade out. To keep those dissonant notes from dominating the song, they simply lowered the guitar volume. You can hear it almost subliminally until the dissonant note leads you directly to the quieter part. That's some smart composition and brilliant engineering.
Disagree! I don't know what you're listening to, brother, but for an example, the part when dude walks over to his amp to do his solo, probably to gather up some feedback/sustain, you can hardly hear ANYTHING that he is doing. There is no separation. THAT makes for a terrible mix! Everything should be heard, and everything should be a part of everything else, yet dileanated distinctly. That is not the case here. Also, the highs are missing the "punch" you're talking about. Listen to it again. It sounds flat! It sounds like everything has been focused into the mid range, so some parts that should be 4000hz - 20000hz are floating around in the 250hz - 4000hz range, which is making it sound muddy; not good! I have been writing, recording, mixing, and mastering music for forty years, and I know what I'm talking about.
Hands down my favorite lyricists ever. The way very simple concepts connect to the very apparent metaphors. Nothing over explained, no fat to be trimmed. Every song is like this. Also love how they don't force their beliefs in peoples faces, all their songs can easily be related to without having to push past religion. All about trying to be decent people and pointing out the stupidity, horror and hypocrisy with which humans treat each other for no reason whatsoever.
No No that’s a good interpretation. It came across to me as an addicts mentality. Doing whatever it takes to get what you need with no concern for how it impacts others.
I discovered thrice with "Artist in the ambulance" 10 years ago and I wasn't updated on the band, when I heard Black Honey I thought "wait did they change the singer?" He changed so much, I love it
I HATE how much more recognition you guys deserve outside of this song. You guys legitimately changed my life. I'm a two tour veteran. One Iraq and one Afghanistan and I cant possibly express the effect you've had on me in my life. You're older albums. all of it. I'm 33. I was back there with you guys, I've seen you through your shit, seen and traveled to see you live 8 times in my life. You're my favorite band in existence.I hope you fall back into your fans that truly love you.
When I stopped to listen to the lyrics, the message that I got from it is that it’s a great picture of what PTSD feels like as you’re going through it. Good to know I’m not the only one. Stay strong brothers💪
Every time I feel like giving up on life, this song keeps me going... I don't know why, it's just something about the way he sings it. Makes me feel like I'm not alone
Saw Thrice live last week, and I was blown away by their performance. They're among the most polished live acts I've ever seen. See them live if you can.
Damn. Teppei's parts are brutal, I really wish they didn't bury them in the studio mix so much because they're awesome. Hopefully we get the entire TBEITBN album in the form of these sessions because the lead parts in Hurricane are what I am holding out for, same as in Death From Above.
I was thinking the same thing. Teppei's guitar parts during the chorus sound amazing here. They are so low on the CD mix that it's difficult to hear them.
I truly can't describe how much I love this song! There are a very few that I can listen to over and over again in one sitting, but I think I could put this on loop and sing myself into oblivion.
110 other bands wish they could be this great live. Can't wait to see them in September. I've been a Thrice fan for about three days now, but I'm all in. In fact, thrice in as many days, hath I declared myself a fan of fan of Thrice. Oh yes.
Love how the lead guitar was changed to be a bit different from the record at 3:25 EDIT: It actually may be like that on record but you can hear it a hell of a lot better hear if it is!
That is one of my few grievances with the record is that Teppeis lead lines are often too deep in the mix that they border on inaudible. There is some wicked lines in Long Defeat that are difficult to hear. It is for sure the same as the record but yeah, hard to hear
I feel that way about the live albums they've put out too, along with Beggars... which if I'm not mistaken, I think Teppei had a hand in mixing. Maybe he's too modest for his own good? haha
TBEITBN gave me the best lyrics, best instrumentation (ESPECIALLY ALL THE GUITAR TONES), best everything in 2016. Album of the year 2016 for me. If anyone knows anything about getting some decently priced stuff that's close to Dustin's rig ( I watched his Rig Rundown video), please tell me.
I love how Dustin sounds like his beard.
That's one of the best comments ever.
I love how this makes sense
The accuracy of this comment. 👌👌
Thank you! "Beard voice" is now part of my lexicon.
This is so accurate for some reason
Whoever mixed deserves a medal. Clean, punchy, crunchy, raw - plenty of bite so you feel it's a live performance, but still enough clarity to hear what's going on. Excellent job!
For real! Bad mixes are the reason I tend to dislike live performances, but this is just outstanding!
except for the ridiculous intro, yes, might not he their fault. always a collab.
Yeah, ya concept of raw have not met phone recorded black metal sessions haha xd

I love how the lead guitar sounds like a bee during the chorus.
Adam Stern it's the little things that count
plus the black background and yellow filter
like the riff that follows the intro for the artist in the ambulance is suppose to imitate a siren

brandon crowell Absolutely, I was generalizing their catalog. This song in particular does seem like it’s about that type of mentality.
Luke Rogers Ever see the “Whitest Kids You Know” skit called Slow Jerk? That’s how I feel about people who say omg un-ironically.
Well said brother 🤘🏻
What about Biggie smalls?
Watching Dustin grow over the years and evolve has been a privilege
I discovered thrice with "Artist in the ambulance" 10 years ago and I wasn't updated on the band, when I heard Black Honey I thought "wait did they change the singer?"
He changed so much, I love it
Dustin's Voice... It's so amazing.
Lars O'Keefe it's like Bacon for your ear holes.
l23 O24 agree it got better

Uhhh deadbolt ?
If a single song could sum up my PTS, it is this song.
When I stopped to listen to the lyrics, the message that I got from it is that it’s a great picture of what PTSD feels like as you’re going through it. Good to know I’m not the only one. Stay strong brothers💪

Every member of this band is underrated. Teppei comes up with some beautiful guitar progressions in all of modern rock.
What a jam.

I'm a simple man. I see thrice, I click like. I see beards, I click love.
Great minds think alike.
Dude, I would love to hear Dustin sing "Simple Man". His voice is perfect!
As a fellow beard-wearer, I endorse this statement.
Ditto
Eric Povish as a beard-loving woman I support those clicks
