- How to open or close moon/sun roof when switch won't work. This works on most models of cars and trucks. When your moon/sun roof does not close properly it can lead to major damage to your vehicle and thousands of dollars in repairs or claims to your auto insurance.

Thank You Very Much!! You did make it look so easy, but was it the switch you thought needed replacing and how much did it cost you?
Thanks great vid, got mine closed before the rain! Apparently if your battery goes dead, or you change the battery with the sunroof open it goes into error mode because it thinks it's closed when its open. Once you hot wire it closed, turn car off then, while holding the switch in the close position, turn car on, continue holding the switch for 30 secs and that will cause it to relearn the closed position. The switch is rarely the problem.

Thank you so much! This worked brilliantly on my sun roof to close it. Afterwards I thought I'd be a smart ass and do it the other way to make it open again but didn't listen to your instructions properly. I now have no interior lights or clock 😂 but at least my sun roof is closed 👍👍
Hi sorry for your problem most likely you blew a fuse for your clock and light check your fuses should be a easy fix.

u think if i hot wire the sunroof motor switch wire the sunroof will tilt up in position???...my sun motor and cable is damaged!
Most likely won't work if damaged
It didn't work for me. So it's not my switches. Ive tested all the connections and checked fuses, but still nothing. 🤦

Thanks it really works too. My sunroof has been open for three months while traveling through rain and drizzling weather. Mine didn't have the screw so I got it loose and use a flathead screwdriver. So thanks again for the video.

What a drag. 2010 Impalas don't have a screw where the screw was for this model vehicle, but I bet that doohicky thing we hotwire will be the same in mine. Well, thanks anyways.

Bro I dont have the sunglasses thing so How I get in the motor .
Some you just pull down at the corners slowly and carefully so you don't break anything. Check around first for your vehicle to be sure how to remove.
my sunroof on my 2002 avalanche will open and close but it will not raise up at the back to fully close and seal it shut. what could that be? thanks for any suggestions
Sounds like your lift system is off track/broke or blocked.

@@shanedavis578 most time you have to remove inside lining of truck to get to it, but first look as best as you can to make sure it's not just blocked, yes there are videos up on youtube showing sunroof repair.
Do you know where the sunroof fuse is located?
Should be in your fuse box same place as window fuses
Thank you for this awesome video my friend. I have a 2006 H2 Hummer and I refuse to let her go. I took her to the car wash today and the moon / sun roof wouldn't close. In fact when it would do the opposite. I had to leave the car wash and came home wondering how much is the dealership going to ding for this fix. Thank god I found your video - it closed and will stay that way until I can get a new switch. Cheers !

Thanks! This worked exactly as shown on my 2001 tahoe (as far as the pinouts go). Turns out mine was something else and I still couldn't get it to close though. It did open it more though :-/ So I thought I'd try the reprogramming thing some other site mentioned and that got it to close! I tried it earlier but I guess I didn't hold it long enough. Oh, also none of the other sites mention that when you hold it (for "around" 30 seconds) that it won't make any noise. Some say you'll hear a gear cranking or something, but mine made no sound. So I was sure it didn't do anything, but I swapped the wires around (Still hot-wiring it because it was there) and it closed. Thanks again for helping me get part way there.

This has been most helpful. I have a 2005 Suburban, the battery was dead at some point, and when I charged the battery and drove the car, I openeed the sun roof. But then it would not close! I had to remove the headliner, remove the sunroof assembly, take it into my garage and get the sunroof to close manually (two little tabs at the back released the glass). Then I had to re-install it all. It was a total nightmare. However, before I reinstalled it, I was able to use this trick in this video to test my theory. I used the small wire as directed and I fully closed the window and waited 20 seconds until I heard a little whirr and click. Then I was able to fully open it and fully close it. Only then did I have the confidence to re-install and put the headliner back on. THANK YOU!!

Im wondering if it maybe got broke or pinched, my driver window power wire snapped today in the door frame.

Hey brother thanks for the great video. I got a 2001 Chevy Suburban and I accidentally vented the sunroof and when I tried to close it the switch wouldn't work for closing. I'm up in central Canada and it's getting real cold and snowy out now. Without your video I would have been in bad shape. Thank you again brother much love

Thanks for the video. I had an old Volvo that had switch issues for the windows and sunroof. I disassembled the switches and cleaned the contacts. They worked fine after that and it cost me nothing to repair.

Hi the power supply that you should be working on is directly behind the switch you use to open and close your sunroof, most of the time it has parts to squeeze on both sides to release it. Before everyone starts replacing the switch, Get yourselves a can of "Caig Laboratories - DeoxIT D5S-6" Contact Cleaner and remove the switch and give it a good spray or two. I had my drivers side master window switch not operating my passengers window (I had to reach over and use its own switch), so I removed the switch to get more angles of attack and gave it a couple spritzes, gave it a second to dry (dries very fast) then shot some compressed air through it. Now both directions work great... Sometimes moisture or gunk can get inside and cause a little corrosion and loss of contact and all it needs is a little TLC... It's worth a try

To replace switch you just have to take a flat head screw driver and pop it out, from the inside, I have a video up showing how to remove switch In my videos. If jumping doesn't work and you hear noise but no movement and you have checked fuses then could be a bad motor. Goodluck. My car battery died, I thought it still had enough power to close my sun roof since it stayed open, but it didn't I got it closed half way, the next day I jumped started my car and that's when it got stuck, Pryor to that day I had zero problems, thanx for ur help.
Now you need a video on how to put up a passenger window to is halfway up. I have duck tape on it to keep the rain out until I can get it repaired

@mustang9549 it works for any switch, even ur kitchen. Just connect the circuit. Mine got completely cut, don't ask how. Was wondering what wires I can connect to hotwire? On buick envision. If not I'll have to look up diagram somewhere

Hi i haven't worked on your model but I would think the same technique of disconnecting the power supply from the switch and using a jumper wire to close the window should work as long as your motor isn't bad. Thanks for watching please subscribe.
Subscribed. Tried this with it stuck open in the wedge position. No luck. Tested to open it more and it did. Any suggestions?
Thanks for watching and sub, sometimes if you get somebody to lightly press down on it, it may close. Also check your window track to be sure noth8ng is blocking it, if none of that works it may be your motor. Gooduck.

Just as side note, for a Nissan Altima this doesn't work but you can use a Allen wrench to manually close or open in an emergency. It's a kinda white allen key hole where sunroof motor is under cover. This just happened to me and after extensive research came upon a comment by someone else. Nissan doesn't even have this listed in their manual for an emergency-BS on them!
