How the Sonos Arc Wall Mount changes the sound of your soundbar

  • The long awaited Sonos Arc Wallmount test. A lot of viewers have asked about the Sonos Arc original wall mount and how it affects sound from the Sonos Arc. The original mount has a precisely placed magnet that will activate the Sonos Arc into altering the EQ to reduce resonance from the wall when it is being used. Today’s video will focus exactly on how the sound is changed. You can then view the demo recordings and decide for yourself if it is the correct wall mount to get. Or you can buy the alternative that I am recommending which doesn’t alter the sound output.

    Well done Peter, another useful and informative video, you have confirmed what my own ears were telling me!
    I was an early adopter of an arc with wall mount, although I mounted the arc under my tv with a sound bar tv bracket combined with the arc bracket because I liked the invisible bracket and secure mounting but easy to lift off the arc speaker the arc bracket provided. Plus there were no other bracket manufacturers producing a bracket at that time. As my arc is not mounted against a wall I didn’t want the reduction in volume and frequency so I removed the magnet from the bracket, and the sound to me was much much better
    For those who wish to do the same this is very easy to do as the magnet is easily located on the right side of the bracket, I used a hole punch slightly lather than the magnet to cleanly cut the foam from one side, the magnet can then easily be removed as it’s only lightly glued in place, I than replaced the foam cut out, to keep it nice and tidy, and saved the magnet for use another day in case I change my installation set up

    Thank you for the video. I had heard/seen it before too. I agree that the volume does reduces with the wall moint, however I felt the clarity of the voice improved. Probably because it reduces the interference from the wall. I'm not an expert, infact I learnt a lot from your videos. This is just my two bits to your excellent scientific evaluation. Thank you

    LOL you are so right on the heavy comments - I could not believe how heavy the Arc is compared to all my prior sound bars - just proves they didn't cut corners I guess - either that or it's got led weights in it! Really appreciate how much effort you put into this, amazing work! Not sure what your background is, but you speak like you have significant engineering experience.
    For me, my Arc has to mount above a gas fireplace with only a very narrow mantle, so I have no choice to use it. I'll update this comment for my thoughts on how it works out as it's currently sitting waiting for me to install it - if I have problems with bass response I will temporarily steal my sub mini from the other media room (beam + sub mini + 2 SL's) , which hardly gets used anymore (kids have moved on), until I my budget (i.e. the wife) allows me a full sized sub for the big media room - but either way I'll let you know.

      Peter Pee Hi Peter - Please keep in mind that my comment is based on listing to each sample via my AirPods Pro. So, it’s only based on this.
      That said, there was better clarity in both the spoken words and the sounds overall. It seemed to have a better representation of details, whereas without the mount sample seemed a bit muddy almost boomy sounding.
      Now, it was not night and day, but to me it was definitely present.

      I see! Ok. That’s a good observation. In reality, that’s exactly what Sonos is trying to do. Reduce the resonance! Very cool.

      Peter Pee This afternoon I finished the setup and Truplay tuning and watched some 4K content and listened to some music and I was not disappointed. The midrange on the Arc was particularly sweet and well emphasized. The bass response was respectable, so I imagine that once my sub arrives the whole system should really shine. 😀

    Sonos system is just fine. Peter your videos are good source and provides great insight. People are drawing negative feedback on how to position the speakers it’s just amazing.
    Keep in mind if you have a box living room with height ceiling of minus 8” feet you will get best sound quality.
    However if you have a Great Room or angle room with 10” plus tall ceiling and open concept then bring your system closer.
    Ex: arc front sub gen 2 - 4 feet from arc then your Ones behind from your seating area. The same way most of the videos are shown.
    Just my thought

And after noticing your piece on wall mount effect on Sonos performance,I have to urge you to do a piece on TV MOUNT Sonos! Your DIY "dead-reckoning" guesstimate could be transformed into another "game-changer", thanks to the tilt-up/down "fine-tuning "capability of many wall mounts! >I'd be excited to hear your thoughts; I've got a Perlesmith fully adjustable corner mounted (Sanos) Arc (48"height) ,with a 9' ceiling and a 10' LMP that I'd be only too happy to have you use as an example!! Hi Peter, great video as always. I have two comments to add...
    1. You question why the magnet when Truplay could be used? My thought is that Truplay is definitely the icing on the cake, but only available if you have an iOS device. It is not supported on Android. Therefore if you are not able to use Truplay (i.e. only use Android) the frequency response is corrected by default.
    2. There is a lot of emphasis from Sonos about putting the ARC below the screen for the best Atmos effect. While I agree, I too was concerned about this, as with our wall arrangement it was not really practical. At this time my TV does not allow the benefit of passing through Atmos, so we are only listening in 5.1. I experimented with mounting the ARC above the screen, about 55cm from the ceiling, and 250cm from the listening position. With the standard EQ it did sound a little strange, however after Truplay tuning everything sounds great. Now I may need to change the location if and when we change the TV, however I have the feeling it will still sound fairly good.
    I don't know if Truplay tuning does anything toward balancing the upward facing speaker elements, but certainly I have the feeling something more than just frequency EQ happened. Maybe you could look into this more sometime.
    Best regards.

    Peter, great video answered my questions about on-wall-mounted Arc, I would suggest that one might build their own brackets using the screw holes in the Arc itself to accomplish the hidden bracket effect while accomplishing the better sound effect. Thank You again for your informative video and the detail

  • @sambowks

    I have the Beam gen 2 and placement makes a huge difference, probably because of the rear bass radiator. My tv unit is open at the back, so allows the bass to pass behind the tv and reverberate off the wall, I imagine. If I place the bar at the foot of the tv you lose a lot of the bass and the sound is a lot less full. I was thinking of getting a sub mini but with it placed as it is you really dont need one, I have the Bass on the EQ set to 0

    Peter, thanks for another great video with simple, clear facts to help us understand what is happening. Have you measured the impact of the wall mount when the Arc is already paired with the Sub? You noted in another video that the Arc reduces its bass output when the Sub is present. I am curious if the wall mount does anything more than what you already measured with the Sub pairing or if the Sub actually increases its output to compensate for the wall mount.

      That’s a good point. I didn’t think of that. Thanks for pointing it out. Without going into the actual testing for now, I’d say that the sub can’t cover past 110hz anyway so the impact of the wall mount at 100hz-500hz won’t be covered by the sub.

      @@PeterPee Thanks, I'll wait (yes, patiently) for your test results. With all of the software features that Sonos deploys, I wouldn't be surprised if the the curve of the wall mount adjustment is different when the Sub is added vs. when the Arc is working solo. hi! I was looking to install the Sonos sound bar close to the bottom of my tv (less than 1 inch) I understand Sonos recommend 5 inches clearance. However, I have a wall mounted LG GX oled tv, that sits flush against the wall, with the panel only protruding at 2 cm away from the wall. Given the tv supports Dolby atmos & eARC and the speaker grills on the Sonos start a few cm away from the rear of the sound bar (I’m wall mounting the arc). Yet another well informative video Peter! If you have a sub G2, play 3 rears and the Arc wall mounted but managed to remove the magnetic, will the arc’s sound still be effected or is it just the arc alone that would make a difference?? As for the true play not able to adjust if it were wall mounted is because i think it will be difficult for trueplay alone to detect if it is or isn’t wall mounted. It would be great if in the S2 app you could turn on or off the wall mount detection. Sonos if your reading this please implement this on your next update as would save everyone having the hassle to remove the magnet to see if they prefer it with or without. Pete maybe if you do another video regarding this to suggest implementing having the option in the S2 app and see if they do it as they seemed to have done a update which made the arc sound better, I think I recall you raised an issue in one of your earlier videos about the arc’s sound and they then later updated it to 12.0.5 and the app 12.0.6 which improved the sound of the arc.

      Hi Francois, love your name. :) With a sub, the effect of the wall mount is more or less erased. The Arc won't be playing that low in the first place.

      @@PeterPee Hi Peter! Thank you so much for this video, it's really enlightening. I do currently have a Sonos setup with a Beam, Sub, and two Play:1 for surround. I will be getting the Arc and want to wall mount it, but this EQ change leaves me a bit scared to do it. You said above that the effect is more or less erased with the sub, but will it still affect dialogue volume? I'm definitely concerned about that, since I already have that problem with the Beam sometimes.

      @@gibstr To be honest, I didn't found out myself. I just reversed the magnet when the wall mount arrived, as it wasn't very difficult to do as opposed to having go through the entire process after it was wall mounted if it did affect dialogue volume, or just sound bad in general.

    So then the question is what is the effect of Trueplay on an Arc with the official Sonos wallmount?
    Or should we request a mid-tones slider in the EQ to bump voices?
    Perhaps you should make a tutorial where you drill out the magnet to get good sound AND solid and esthetical mount?

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  3 роки тому +1

      The beam doesn’t have that feature of auto eq on detection of wall mount so it won’t change based on that. The sound might change because of the fact that it’s wall mounted though not because it detects that it’s wall mounted.

    Hey peter, what if you did the ikea symfonisk sub hack? Since it is not the Sonos sub connected, the arc will still use its woofers for bass. In this case, would you put the magnet to reduce the bass coming from the arc?

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  3 роки тому

      Yes, there could be many reasons why you would want to reduce the bass. Sometimes the wall is lending too much reinforcement to the bass. And sometimes, if you prefer the bass to come from a sub, you want to drop the bass on the arc itself. I have not personally tried the IKEA symfornisk sub hack, but if you have done that, then yes, the Arc will not crossover the bass to the sub and you might want to reduce the bass with the magnet put back.

    I’m not a big fan of the pricing that Sonos stiffs us with concerning speaker stands and mounting kits. If you’re paying 250 bucks for a sonos 1, is it really feasible to spend 150 more just to put it on a stand? As far as the magnet is concerned….Why would Sonos reduce the base output on a product that totally lacks base output already?

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  Рік тому +1

      It’s to reduce the resonance that it will get when the bass is reinforced against the wall that the arc is mounted to.

    Hi there. I really enjoy your videos, very good at explaining things thank you. I have a question. I've read in a couple of places that the Sonos Arc does not support true surround sound when adding rear speakers. That is to say, that if you add the 2 rears, it just reenforces the stereo image from the front. I've never used Sonos products before but I'm thinking of purchasing the arc and 2 sonos 5s in the future for a really lovely fully bodied sound in the Room, plus a sub. Will this setup work and will the rear speakers act as true rear speakers? Thanks.

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  3 роки тому +1

      That’s not true. The surrounds will play surround tracks. Not just replicate from the front left and right channel. Play a surround track and it’s obvious. An arc with fives is a very potent combination. Not the most cost effective but a great system.
