It's incredible how no matter what the specific cause is, almost every country's government has the same issue - people keeping their seats for far longer than they're welcome through loopholes and technicalities.
People usually get very shitty when people put ads in their videos but honestly if it means more of these videos I'm glad he's getting sponsorships.

There's a thingy in the bottom corner that says "includes paid promotion". So the ASA could turn up at my door, and I could make them a cup of tea and say "Anything the matter?" and they'd say "No", and I'd say "Bye then!" and they'd say "Bye! Thanks for the tea."
If you do absolutely HAVE to promote in video, then the lesser evil is to do it blatantly and do it well. To be fair Jay did that.
I don't mind sponsorships most of the time, the ones I do mind is where the entire video is dedicated to saying 'look how great this thing is' and then promoting the fact that it occasionally catches fire is a security measure
Jay personalized the ads and made them funny in his own way, which made it awesome rather than... shit.

Mr Bercow once came to watch my Buckinghamshire village's bi-annual amateur dramatics production, I was one of the foyer staff and during the interval he bought some raffle tickets from me. He was a very well spoken and lovely man who genuinely seemed to be enjoying the evening. He also visited my school a few times (twice while I was there) when he was the Speaker. A seemingly increasingly rare example of a respectable Tory MP.

He is mostly unbiased, as much as he can be. He was a conservative but my local MP who's conservative also said to me that a lot of his colleagues don't like him so his ties to the party are mostly dead. My local MP can't stand him too, I love Bercow though.He's hilarious in my opinion and he happens to be a well-spoken fellow. He brightens the commons. He's the biggest reason why I watch the full PMQs on a Wednesday. Also he only represents Buckingham on local issues. He was against HS2 and he was in a committee and he represented the people of Buckingham because the line was going to severely effect some of the villages. Sadly they didn't listen to him.
The Right Honourable Jimmy I align fairly far left on the political spectrum but have huge amounts of respect for Bercow. He really is Right an Honourable in my humble opinion.
The Right Honourable Jimmy I'm no fan of the Tories but I do love the way he has carried out his role and the fact that the Conservatives have tried multiple times to oust him does endear him to me :')
He seems to be a great chap and takes his job seriously. That doesn't however, address the issue that his constituents aren't represented (at least he wants to change it though). You could also get an absolute arsehole of a speaker, and their constituents would be stuck with said speaker.
Got to say that I do usually like Bercow - though I do wish he would occasionally admonish Helen Goodman who is the single worst member for screeching out when someone else is talking and can often clearly be heard on tv above everyone else. Besides that, he does a good job - however, I do tend to prefer when either Lindsay Hoyle or Eleanor Lang are in the chair. Often they seem to have better control and usually gain great respect from the other MPs.

As a resident of Buckingham, can confirm its a flipping nightmare. But Bercow actually served his people quite well (I had pals having issues with visas for a multinational family, and knew some wronged old people he helped get justice). Very good to hear you pronouncing 'Farage' correctly. My Dad's friend (a scholar and socialist living in Winslow) was once stopped by Sky News for a tasty soundbite on Farages local campaigning, and he stopped the reporter half way through his sentence saying 'Look, MATE, I know I present as Tory, but those of us from the wrong side of the tracks call a garage a garage.'

1:04 That's John Bercow's, yes the Conservative, coat of arms. Before becoming speaker, he was part of the Tory Reform Group, which just sounds like liberalism with extra steps. He's long fought for queer rights, hence why that's on his coat of arms. The ladder represents how he was born the son of a taxi driver, and the social climbing he had to do to get to be speaker.

In 1966 the people of Ceredigion voted out their MP, who became deputy speaker the year before, precisely because of the lack of representation. Some constituencies do vote out the speaker, or in Ceredigion's case, the deputy speaker.

Ive always found it interesting how it diverged with the US principal. In the US the speaker is the most powerful member of the House, leading the majority party (though there is also a majority leader) and controlling what gets voted on.
The US principal was a divergence of the British principal (not the other way). The speaker of the house existed centuries before the US even existed.

I grew up in the Buckingham constituency, it sucked. Plus when a friend arranged to meet up and discuss a local wind farm proposal (we were in favour for) he gave them the wrong address so the meeting wouldn't go ahead
I still live there. Maybe one day I'll move away and be able to actually vote!

The thing I love most about these videos is the modesty and attention to detail. Like the fun facts, on the speaker cards which were actually interesting or the old style advertisement warning in the top. But the best part is that these small things weren't advertised (pun intended)

Over in BC, this was actually a huge issue. We had a hung parliament 43-41-3. The NDP (41) and Greens (3) formed government but with the speaker staying neutral, every vote would have been 43-43. So the NDP convinced a Liberal to become speaker, he did and then was immediately booted out of his party. The NDP and Greens didn't want him. So he sat as an independent. And in the election everyone was gunning for his seat because pretty much every party didn't like him.

This issue genuinely frustrates me. The first general election after I came of voting age, I actively made an effort to look into the candidates, policies, and make an educated decision on who I wanted to vote for.
I made up my mind, and it wasn't Tory...It was then I discovered the nonsense speaker tradition, and it infuriated me, and I didn't vote as it made me feel like my voice didn't matter.
And it still does make me feel that way...I used to ballot spoil, but unless that's done en masse, there's no point, so I vote for any alternative that isn't amoral...Which in this area, is basically just Green.
Some democracy this is, when there's a whole section of the UK that doesn't get a fair choice of options by comparison to literally the rest of the country. Then they wonder why some people don't bother voting at all...

John Bercow has said that his role was very much similar to that of an ordinary MP, he attends meetings with constituents, as an ordinary MP, is able to try and redress grievances they have. The main thing is that he doesn't vote, and isn't a member of a party. He's an MP, so does stand for reelection, so constituents do have a chance to chuck him out (albeit an unlikely one, given no major parties, other than Green, forward candidates)
