I haven't been able to bring myaelf to watch this race since 1979. Bid overcame every bad ride Franklin gave him except one. I sure would like to see Bid's FL Derby again. Thank you for this video.
This is a perfect example of why you don't let an apprentice jockey ride a superstar racehorse like Spectacular Bid. Ronnie Franklin should NEVER have ridden "The Bid". After the Belmont, Franklin was replaced by Bill Shoemaker. Shoe would have won the Triple Crown on The Bid. No doubt about it.
I liked Bid, living in the 70's, I saw some great horses,Seattle Slew, Affirmed, Bid and the greatest in Secretariat. Also had great loser in Alydar and Sham. Watches races like this make you really see how great Secretariat was, he never tired. Bid tired, I feel to many wanted that Secretariat ride to show what they have, only Secretariat could be that. Bid was a great horse.
Franklin did the Bid in with a 3rd quarter in 23.3, when all he had to do is track the cheap speed and gun him down on the far turn...Coastal was a nice horse, but Bid still should have won comfortably.
He was the greatest horse that ever looked through a bridle. The only two horses that I believe would have given him a run were Citation and Secretariat. - Trainer Grover "Buddy" Delp Personally, I'd like to have seen Slew & Dr. Fager take a shot at him as well. In any case, Delp was reportedly still furious about Franklins ride in the Belmont right up until the time of his death in Dec. of '06.
Franklin thought he was on another Secretariat said the great Red Smith. Jimmy the Greek said he went to early. Many said the same thing. It was not the pin. The Bid ran a fast pace before entering the strecth. He then ran out of gas like many before him & lost the T.C.
im watching this video because my horse is one of Golden Act's offspring and i was interested to see how he did altho i knew he was 3rd in Kentucky Derby, 2nd in Preakness and Belmont. She didnt make it fare though because she injured herself while racing after being in it for 6 months. And i believe my horse could be the last baby that Golden Act produced, since she was born on April 4,2001, and he died May 8,2000, and because it takes 11 months for a horse to be produced.
On top of the injury jockey Ronnie Franklin poorly judged the rapid pace and moved too quickly on the rabbit. I think this was Franklin's last ride on The Bid. Willie Shoemaker got the mount and Franklin ended up getting suspended after his arrest for cocaine possession.
good grief: What an tragically terrible ride. Bid's jockey goes tearing after a long shot who sets a blazing early pace--why? You can tell watching the first half of the race that Bid's pace is too hot. And then, predictably, he runs out gas late. Horrible ride.
If any horse in history that had a bad ride it would have been Secretariat. He ran fractions much faster than The Bid. I mean way faster. Check the record. The difference was Secretariat was a stayer. Delp also made the statement maybe just he is not a 1 1/2 miler. The Bid was a stronger horse as a 4 years old. He is right up there in the top 5 of all time & his record proves it without a doubt. IMHO Man 0' War & Citation would not have a chance against him to a 1 1/4 mile And maybe 1 1/2 mile.
If ridden correctly no doubt he wins. Ran out of gas halfway through the stretch. Unfortunately, this horse simply was not destined to win the Triple Crown. Still, legendary in his own right 26 wins 2 shows 1 place in 30 starts.
@jdavidcole64 This does remind me some of 2004 Smarty Jones Belmont, but Bid took the lead even earlier and his jockey seemed to push him a little harder. It's easy for all of us to sit here and bash the jockeys, but they have to do what they think is going to win them the race, not what might make the most sense to the fans watching.
It wasnt such a shame that the 'Bid' lost to Affirmed in the JCGC. Affirmed was a 4YO, Bid a 3. horsebakken-good for you. I saw Coastal win the '79 Mth. Inv. in Jersey that year. There sure were a lot of outstanding 3YOs that year. 'Bid, General Assembly, Golden Act, Czaravich, Coastal-good crop.
Agree that Ronnie Franklin blew the Triple for Bid. He's chasing a horse who had no chance of winning setting fast fractions while a fresh, good horse like Coastal was primed for the race. Delp did a good job guiding Bid and Shoemaker, who subsequently took over the mount, only lost 1 race with Bid if I recall and that was when Bid was 3 and Affirmed was 4. Shades of Risen Star who had an awful trip in the Derby, through no fault of the jockey, or there would be 2 more Triple Crown winners.
At the risk of starting a flame war, I'd like to point out that, great though he was, SB never won a race over 10f. For example, he was second in the JCGC which that year was also 12f on a fast track at Belmont. The Bid carried Willie Shoemaker but finished 3/4 length behind Affirmed -- on the plus side, he finished 3 in front of Coastal.
@playitsafe20 I do not believe the pin was the reason for the loss either. Don't believe the ride was too. The Bid was truly a great horse but at a 1 1/2 mile distance he quite did not measure up IMO as a 3 year old,.But if he ran at that distance at 4 years old I believe he would have been much better.
bid should have won this race, it was not the pin but franklin, franklin was a shit rider and he was tiring out bid before the final turn, franklin made a common mistake aat belmont, he does not realize that the final turn is no where close to the finish, bill shoemaker had rode spectacular bid then bid was a triple crown champion
Just for the purposes of the record, and once and for all: Safety pin my butt, that horse was beaten clean and on the square. Blame it on Nick Knucklehead for a rider, if anything.
It very odd so many believes the bad ride is why he lost the Belmont. Red Smith '"To the Swift' quoted the words spoken by Delp himself concerning Franklins ride. Now they were saying that Franklin pulled his mount’s cork by sending him to the front early and going the first mile in 1:36. On the back side, Buddy Delp sipped his beer. “The kid rode a fine race,” he said again and again.
Spectacular Bid... one of the greatest ponies to bring joy to so many!

that was on the jockey

He should be behind the pack.. .he would won that race if his jockey dont push him to front.

Horses lose races for many reasons. I think it's fair to say a safety pin was NOT the reason 'Bid lost this one.
