I generally come up with a basic idea for a campaign and do not think about the next session until the day before the session. if i am completely out of ideas I will use the random charts like passengers and cargo

I have been working on the background of Traveller. Especially the services aspects. I mean has anybody really sat down and figured out what it would take to run a say "Fuel Service" on a Class "A" Starport(2,500 tons of fuel daily)? Using some charts in "High Guard", it has really been challenging to figure out what it would take.
Usually it is Presto From Air, their is always Hydrogen available at the Starport.
Do the math! How many ships would it take to make that much Fuel? You can't pay market price which would put you in bankruptcy pretty quick.
Just to make life livable in Traveller, takes many things. Food, Water, Materials, which makes for questions like...
How many tons of food do you need daily to feed a Pop Level 9 Planet?
How much Minerals (mining ) do you need to make just 1 Far Trader Ship?
How much Goods will satisfy a Tech 12 world with Tech 14 Goods?
How many ships would be needed to evacuate a Pop Level 5 world?
What is legal (or Illegal) on this planet?
What Kind of Animals are needed for Food, domesticated or Wild?
To get Ideas, if you do episodes, just look at old tv shows. Adapt some plots from show where the team helps the local character to stop a local bad guy. I use the "A-Team", Knight Rider and other shows Miami Vice, etc.
If your group wants to do Illegal stuff how bout "Breaking Bad" Ideas. What ever the planet say no to is a yes for players.
For the Goods and Services I came up with the "1.5 Rule". Nobody sells for less than 1.5 Cost to pay for labor and overhead. Raw materials are sold for market price divided by 1.5. Manufactured goods are not sold for less than 1.5 of market, no matter how good the broker. Only exception if buying stolen goods from thieves.

Do you prefer episodic games where they are like episodes of star trek or a consistent narrative story like Andor?

    Do you use random encounters?

Only in a wilderness environment. Otherwise, I have the encounters set.

@@page121tabletoproleplaying4 I'd be interested in knowing how you do that.

@@martinbowman1993 It depends on the game and on the critters. First I write up a chart of usually 6 possible encounters. If I'm trying to drive home what a dangerous environment they're in, I'll pop a random encounter on 1 or 2 on d6. Otherwise, I usually use a 1 on a d6 just like old school D&D.
