Bristol Motor Speedway. Where EVERY short track class record is held. Proud that a Super Modified final got the overall. I come from the land of Super Modified Hardtops. Fresno, Ca. and San Jose, Ca. Al Pombo, Marshall Sargent, Howard Kaeding, Bill Scott, Jerry Thompson, Kearney Bowl, Clovis Speedway, Mesa Marin, Madera Speedway. Many memories
The sprint car actually touched the wall during this speed event. Did some damage. They fixed it on site then it did go out and set a slightly faster lap time than the super. Both were haulin' the mail thats for sure!
@kkatz35 yes Jason set the record but mike was very close. Mike Lichty set a new half-mile Supermodified world record with a lap of 144.634 mph in 13.267 seconds.
It really is. I’ve seen them live many times and it never ceases to be amazing. Thompson was the craziest place to see them- 175mph down the back stretch, averaging over 150. They were something like 25mph quicker than a modified tour car.
sprintman, I grew up going to Sandusky Speedway when they ran supers on a regular basis, been to a dozen ISMA Hy Miler Nationals there, been to Oswego a few times too. Supers are impressive. I've also watched USAC sprints at IRP, Winchester, and Eldora, USAC Silver Crowns at IRP, and WoO at Eldora. Each has their own unique appeal and I love em all! You need to see the supers live at least once!
that's nothing ... I watched Bentley Warren test at New Hampshire International in the Dunigan 29 a few years back and he didn't lift... unbelievable!!! take into account that the Dunigan cars were possibly the best cars to ever run and with the combination of drivers like Bentley, Russ Wood, Davey Hamilton they were the force to be reckoned with...supr61jr
I was there for that, I loved watching the left wheel just hang out in the air. Don't forget Vic Miller cars, with Chris Perley and Bentley drove a Miller car for a little while.
I always heard stories about this as a kid from some guys I grew up with around Seekonk. I never knew if I believed it or not because it just seemed too unreal. In recent years, I've come across quite a few people who were there for it.
I lived next door to Bentley growing up and on Friday nights about midnight after working all day on the cars would drive it up and down the street at 100mph ,sparks flying from bottoming out, loud as hell , making sure it was ready to go. Awesome sight
I walked on the Moon. I spent a few days there. I drove my moon rover and didn’t obey any speed limits. You kind of getting my drift, nobody cares about your outing in NH.
When they outlawed the rear-engine Supers, did they do away with their records also? I remember the record being much higher that 145mph... almost 170 mph.
This is quite a bit slower than a pavement sprint car around here. Record is 12.8 in a pavement sprint car. 151 mph average. The World of Outlaws are doing 168 mph down the straights on dirt.
@@saragrant9749 I think you are right Sara. Thanks! I was sitting in the first turn looking up the front straightaway and he was flying!! ISMA put on a really good show that night
Track records in short tracks are speculatvie at best...first the size of the actual racing groove is what should be measured not the track.and the fact is, there is no standard of which tracks adhear to that provide a consistent 1/2 mile size measurement...some are done from the outside wall..some in the middle..and some measurements in the inside. Converting average speeds based on an arbritary 1/2 measurement can result in inflated or deflated speeds based on what the actual track size is.
Absolutely ! Supers weigh one half of a Cup Car, Have Twice the Tire Patch and run Injected Big Blocks making nearly twice the HP ! They Are Light but they get ALL that HP to the Ground !
Not sure if you can call it a world record call it an American modified lap record holder if it was like an world modified championship and other countries took park in it like NZ Australia European countries yes you may call it an world record but unfortunately there’s not much modified cars around the world just in the states
@bd189 mmm not impressed b i bet it was still awesome. add two seconds to that and thats what they do at toledo speedway in ohio and thats a half mile track. thats why i dont see how bristol can boast world records when many half miles r faster
That is spooky to see something go that fast on Bristol.

Love supermods, family has ran at Oswego Speedway for decades now.
Watched the races when I lived there in the 1970s. Remember Kaeding real well and some guy named Rescino.
Mesa Marin was super fast....
The sprint car actually touched the wall during this speed event. Did some damage. They fixed it on site then it did go out and set a slightly faster lap time than the super. Both were haulin' the mail thats for sure!
WHOA!!!!
That is CRAZY fast!
Banking or not, that is wicked fast on a half mile track ! 😱
Average speed 144+. 950 hp, huge tires and wing= hold my beer.
Lichty did a 150 mph lap at Oswego with a wing
Yup. 14.730 on the 5/8. Wow!!
My God love that sound!
Love that sound! Like NASCAR cup cars used to sound.
That is a big V8 putting it all down with sound.
something i thought i would never see a supermodified going around bristol.
but I love it :)
@kkatz35 yes Jason set the record but mike was very close. Mike Lichty set a new half-mile Supermodified world record with a lap of 144.634 mph in 13.267 seconds.
0:17 i love that nervous laugh, its one of absolute disbelief. It's insane how fast these things are on a short track

Colin Klier I know a guy that used to race sprints up at Sandusky

@@dobermanpac1064 if nobody cares, then why are there answers to that comment?
I just saw a video of a winged sprint car, that may have been a year or two after this, that ran a 0:12.6 at Winchester.
Would love to smell that alcohol burning beast I remember watching them at the big O every Saturday night back in the day good ole Eddie bellinger
Spent many a labor day weekend there as a little kid straight into adulthood, Bellinger's a legend. Cheers from north of the border.
I was at bristol wen they were doing this they were flyin
That thing sounds amazing
You should hear them live- it makes the grandstands vibrate. You can feel it through your whole body.
awsome, just awsome. is there any footage of jason blonde in the winged sprintcar?
When they outlawed the rear-engine Supers, did they do away with their records also? I remember the record being much higher that 145mph... almost 170 mph.
that is nuts around there i wonder how fast Chris Perley would have gone probley a 12 second lap if he was out there
Next year two words.
Chris Perley
Harmon Holly :)
billy pauch at syracuse 144.500 mph world record, doug wolfgang at flemington 5/8 mile 141.323 mph world record!
Just wow
I can see a isma race at bristol in the near future. wish n pray wish n pray
Awesome!
Nothin’ to it. Right foot to the floor, prop your left foot up on a roll bar, turn left now again, return to the pits, rinse out your underwear.

awesome
Looks like a dag gone SLOT CAR! WHOA!
wonder why Perley wasn't there,
its mike licty
Holy fuck balls
God damn
I forget who it was that did 153 at Flemington after they paved it. It might have been Gosek. It was wicked fast, especially with very little banking.
Chris Perley turned the eventual, final track record at Flemington you are referring to- I believe in 1998.
@@saragrant9749 I think you are right Sara. Thanks! I was sitting in the first turn looking up the front straightaway and he was flying!! ISMA put on a really good show that night
Sprint cars turned faster laps here on dirt in 2000 than nascar's can.

IIRC NASCAR uses 15 feet off the outside wall.
You are correct, sir.
Swindell was on dirt....not that that really matters tho -- they FLY in this place!
What is the name of this track?
+Dale LaSelle (Mr. Mopar) Darren Pittman rolling wheels 145 mph 5/8 mile
Bristol Motor Speedway.
ya i know.
these are way better than Nascar
If you can make laps without lifting you aren't going fast enough.
Depends on track.
Troy Regier in the biswell 10 is hands down the baddest super on the planet. That car would have easily dipped into the 12's no problem
Waiting....................................................................................................................................
Na Troy Regier in the baby blue #98 was the best super modifieds driver I've seen in person clear back to Davey Hamilton dayz west coast anyways
@racefan32 didnt sound like it. they dont at toledo either
Who was that. That set the record?
Mike Lichty
sammy did it on dirt
they couldn't he would have lifted off the ground with the speeds he drives at lol, im sure they asked him, im guessing he declined
Haulin ass
Those cars are faster tha nascar's?
Absolutely ! Supers weigh one half of a Cup Car, Have Twice the Tire Patch and run Injected Big Blocks making nearly twice the HP ! They Are Light but they get ALL that HP to the Ground !
Cup track record at the time was average 119mph. This car averaged 144+
@sammyman915 MERCY
and im sry. its spelled, lichty
Sprint cars also weight nothing compared to a NASCAR stock car.
Marcd speewya 1000000000000
