I grew up in Hamilton, Ontario, and there was a local one-third mile track that would host the supers a few times a season. This was in the 70s, and the cars would turn that track in 11 seconds, on three wheels, because they had so much torque they would twist the frame so far that the left front was airborne. The sound of the engines was nearly painful. That was real racing!
YES and they raced at the now defunct San Jose speedway as well as the also defunct Altamont speedway, and on dirt at West Capital Speedway in Sacramento, they park trucks there now.
@jacktheripped no, unfortunately that died out about 10 years ago. There are, at most, 5 or 6 supers left in the California area. The group in this video is different.
Man super cool to see guy from my town Canon City win this race. Local paper never even mentions a thing about racing ever. Way to go Ricky doing the hometown proud
Caught the Englewood super mods in 2018 at meridian. They were running vintages race that same night. Caught the last Englewood super mod race at RMR before the track closed.
I loved when the Super Mods came to Cajon Speedway in El Cajon Ca back in the 90s. We ran IMCA Asphalt Modifieds there. I worked on my cousins crew. They’d do an open wheel night when the Supers were in town so we got to race those nights. I will never forget Davey Hamilton was the man. Held the all time track record at Cajon. (Its an empty lot now 🤬) I think it was a 13.5 or something insane on a 3/8 mile. Our mods ran in the low 16s. 3 seconds slower on that little track. 😲
I was down there once from Vancouver island Canada crewing for a friends Imca modified I had the headset on for communication to the driver when racing but I never knew I had to run from the pits to the grandstands where all the rear race spotters were standing. The stands were so packed I had to climb up the side of the grandstands after someone told me to go there . 35 degree sun and I was sweating bullets. It was still worth the heatstroke I got afterwards lol
I saw a sprint car main at South Sound Speedway in Tenino Washington and the leader started last and was tapping 2nd place as he crossed the finish line having lapped all the other cars. Tim Brown.
Love these beasts So exciting power monsters . Used to be common up here in Ontario Canada . My Dad and brother had glorious times watching these years ago . Expensive division to run , delicate machines . People should be more aware of this type of spectacle . The economic $$ problems of racing is slowing depleted a great deal of competitor’s . So sad The audience should really try to soak all this in . Missing the “ Supers in Canada 🇨🇦
@@naughtmoses...b Bullshit. In the begining of Supermodifieds at Oswego they were sprint cars, ex Indy cars ( front engine) they had rear engine supers , 4 wheel drive supers and home designed / built with every shape/ style imaginable. Jim Shampine created the 18 inch offset wedge car that became the standard. If they so called kicked him out it wasnt for being too fast it would be because of weight, tires and other rules saying no center driveshaft sprint cars that weigh 300 or more lbs less and different wheelbase. On a short sprint race the 1200 to 1400 lbs sprint cars that run softer tires would be quicker by a tenth or two seconds from the weight and tire advantage but a longer race or bigger track the super would prevail. They are made from the same componets just chassis is different geometry and fixed wing plus big nose wing not allowed on supermods.
Yall check out the 3 wheel right side super that tim Richmond drive at Sandusky speedway in ohio, the car was banned by the sanctioning body, too fast, i met the designer , he told me he never worked off plans, and he cut the car up for scrap
@@Angel-dp9sl I think a one mile would be about max for them. Richmond would likely be awesome. Phoenix and NH would work. A high banked oval like Texas or Charlotte would likely prove deadly.

I'd like to see a car like these designed for a road course, so it has a more symmetrical design. They look cool but how everything is staggered to the left is just kinda goofy lookin
@Zach Michaelis On Dirt. If you're turning right on asphalt, things are not going good. There's only a little room for that on pavement or you'll meet and greet the wall and Bob Euker seats when it hooks into the wall.
Duane Rutherford. You are probably thinking of Flamboro . Up on # 6 hyw . Been there too many times to count . Great, great times . Supers would come to Delaware and Cayuga as well . So sad that economics have killed off so many of teams . Many great former Canadians ran successfully for years. Especially at Oswego NY The commentators here are annoying as hell …. The spectators are sitting on their hands … c-on get UP !!!!!
Ugly? Surely that's a matter of opinion... These things are the most bad ass cars on any short track lucky enough to host them. Watching them pull the left front wheel off the ground going down the back stretch is a site to behold. And that sound...my God that sound when you see em live..there's nothing like it.
Not too impressive sorry . They used to run the first few laps in a pack just as they started . Then you would see magic happen. But all of this was after Hamilton would take the lucky ticket stub holder for a lap after lap of tire smoking Hilborn injected scare ride each saterday night. Many more exp. Then as to now. This is low budget.

If this division can keep working on rebuilding it could be a real force again. Such a majestic division of race car, I hope it can be revived!
Sara Grant it’s still going strong in the North East
@@Jake-zg2km oh yes, I'm from new Hampshire. Been watching them since the early 80's, my favorite division!

Hard to imagine how hard these cars accelerate out of the corners without being there!
I believe the track record here was set by a super mod.

I like the little clay/dirt track in the infield, good for Champ Karts and/or Quarter Midgets.
Pretty cool looking cars! Kind of a cross between an outlaw sprint and an Indy car.
Thank You for this video 🙏🏼
17:59 if this track can stay open. So can nazareth.
They use to run them at Meridian once a month back in the 90's

Why is the car count so low in this series out west?

How many times can you mention a track that closed 25 years ago?
Man a 30 lap feature on a 3/8 mile uo north in ohio, lorain county speedway in ohio, last bout 15 min tops lol

shannon mullin not real supermodifideds wish you guys had real ones but you don’t get that unless your in the North East
I’ve been going to Oswego since 1967. Nice to see the supers in Idaho! Who’d a thunk it?
Long history of supers in Intermountain West.
JoJo Helberg took his Sprint car to New York A few years ago and was too fast for the super modified`s he was asked to leave.
NorCal's JoJo was too fast for the (rest of the) asphalt sprints at the BIG Kern County Raceway several times.

West coast supers lot different than the east
