My studio burned down in 2018. In addition to your insuring your gear, try to have offsite copies of your original music. My digital stuff was all backed up offsite, but 20 years of analog work was lost. I guarantee there was no Stairway To Heaven, but it was meaningful to me.

Hey Sammy. I used to be an insurance agent. Definitely talk to yours about this. It can be tricky since it’s in your home, but you use it for business. Plus, I don’t live in Canada, so it could be even trickier. I’m not sure. Talk to him though, because you could be in a lurch if you have a fire or flood.

A good idea is to take pictures of everything and give them to a friend to keep. In case of a fire or flood you can show the insurance what things you had in your house and what everything was worth, so they can give you the money all your gear was worth.but anyway, you have this video now, that must be a good option too. By the way, do you ever sell anything? If not, you could be a hoarder.

Yep, good comment. Not tricky at ll. It's not covered. Not unless he adds specialized coverage. Homeowners have incidental coverage for a few thousand dollars for business items. That's intended to cover items that they may bring home to do work sometimes. Does not cover a home-based business and not enough coverage for this.

I finally got to the point of not buying anymore gear. I can’t justify buying more. 14 guitars, 2 basses, 5 amps, drums and recording gear. Its enough for me. Whatever makes you happy is the right thing. There’s is no such thing as too much.

  • @mk_rexx
    @mk_rexx 2 роки тому +56

I'd give it to you, Rob Scallon, Andrew Huang and a bunch more youtube musicians who hoard weird gear because 1) It's part of your job and 2) most of the items are unique. In fact, you guys inspire me to collect a whole lot of weird gear myself.
If I ever get enough disposable income, I definetly would do that but not two of the same thing. It just doesn't sit right to me to own two of similar shoes or shirts that I don't use at the same time, or in this case, two of the same type of guitars or pedals.
Right now, I have two guitars and I'm annoyed that I currently don't have a specific use for the second one so I just converted it to an octave mandolin thing in the mean time.

I was a drummer before picking up guitar as a 24th birthday gift for myself (I was doing public health work in a small town in southern Africa, so teaching myself to play by lantern/flashlight was something I could do once it got dark), so my attitude towards gear stems from my drummer days and the issues having an excessive kit creates. I had friends in high school who had drumsets which literally took up whole rooms (or even multiple room) in their homes, and I still have flashbacks to the struggles of trying to fit my own equipment into my station wagon before a gig. I ended up creating a rule that defined "too much gear" as having anything on my drumset that wasn't used in 90% of my gigs (or a couple collectors things, like some drums I got while traeling, which I never played but were reminders of good times, or some signed drum heads and my first marching snare). That sort of carries over to guitar. I don't really gig; it's more stress relief, but if I can't remember the last time I used something, or it's been over a year, it's time to sell it to someone who might use it.

If you can afford it, go for it. It can get very expensive, and addictive to need something new all the time. My philosophy, as a parent, husband and primary source of income is that I have to sell something to buy something. That way it keeps things fresh, scratches that itch, but doesn't take money away from more important things, like home repairs, etc. The other good thing is the guilt of blowing a few grand on an instrument isn't there.

  • @shizzlemcflash
    @shizzlemcflash 2 роки тому +90

Yes, but it is relative to time. So if you've played guitar for a year and have the same amount of gear as someone who has played for 30 years then you probably have to much gear generally speaking
I think my point is that you should acquire gear rather than making shopping a second hobby. It's very easy to let an obsession with finding new gear turn into something artificial that overshadows your original interest in music. Let gear come to you over time.

Really enjoyed this - and the fact that it's what you can do with the gear that matters most. I've played with some folks who definitely got into the gear collecting thing, but I never really had the income to do it myself so very much developed the same "what you can do with it" attitude.
After playing (on and off) for almost 30 years I have 6 guitars. My trusty, played hundreds of gigs Ibanez Talman electric (with p90s), a Vantage Avenger from the 80s (which used to belong to Johnny Volume from the seminal NZ punk band, The Scavengers), an Epiphone SG (which is currently in pieces and has a green flame sparkle finish courtesy of a friend), an Ashton classical guitar and an Ashton D20 acoustic which I purchased for $10 and have been teaching myself how to fix it (remounting the bridge mostly). Finally I have my sisters Epiphone EBM-5 Bass guitar which she played when we were in a goth rock band in the early 00s.
Still got my Vox Valvetronix amp, but haven't plugged it in in a very very long time.
[Oh I also play drums and have various bits and pieces, but no longer have a full kit - just too much space and hard to find a place to play when you're renting]

I think if you have more gear than you can reasonably keep up with (changing strings, proper storage, etc.) you're just hoarding and it's time to let some stuff go to somewhere it'll be appreciated more. I've owned damn near 20 guitars at this point, I always try to keep it down to a reasonable number and the extras either get sold or given to friends as gifts.

There are lot of players out there who's satisfied and has contentment with 1 guitar. Even a guy like Derek Trucks only use one (yea he has many but he only uses one).
Its easy to transport, its easier to change strings, its saves you time and you dont need many strings to change since you only have one.

So far I've got 2 electric guitars (both were under 300 USD and play really nice, Aria and Ural USSR), 1 Höfner violin bass, and a Jerry Jones sitaruitar (my personal favorite, cost me 1,400 USD and lots of working hours)

Vintage is my jam. Despite being mostly a metalhead, I really want to find a Gibson archtop from the 1910s, because I think it would be great to have something that was actually built by Orville himself. I also really want an L5 from the Loyd Loar era. The two best guitar luthiers, imho. Although, I've heard that Antonio Stradivari actually made a lute, or a guitar, can't remember which.
Otherwise, as far as electrics go, i guess I have three holy grails. The first is a 59 Les Paul. The second, a personal holy grail as an SG guy, is a 61 Les Paul. The last would a 56 Strat.
I'm primarily a Gibson guy, but I love the Strat. Particularly the original Strat SSS layout. I mean, what use would a Gibson guy have for an HH Strat?
I don't have any true vintage guitars, but I do have some 20 and 30 year old guitars. Being 33 myself, kind of makes them vintage to me, I guess.

I literally have one guitar (acoustic) and it break Last week, its beyond repair since the wood is to cheap for that, I have to buy another but since I live in Brazil (weeeee) my earnings are below 300 dólars a mont, so no guitar for me for the forseen future, nice video tho, is good seeing someone living the dream

Instruments are tools, after all. As long as they are serving a purpose then it's fine to have. I downsized and upgraded over the past couple years, so now I just have 2 6 string electrics, a right handed 6 string (I'm left handed and wanted to learn to play right handed), an 8 string, a 4 string bass, an acoustic guitar, and a classical guitar. I just have 1 combo amp and a bass practice amp, like 8 pedals or something, a couple microphones, etc. It feels good to just have what I need and not much more.

At the cost of being stereotypical, my wife's idea of too much gear is much different from my idea of too much gear. She's pretty sure I'm several items over the limit already; I personally think the limiting factor is the bearing load of the floor.
Now, I've only got two guitars, two real synths, three amps, and a dozen or so pedals, but I've also got a whole bunch of "not real" synths - toys, circuit bend projects, homebrew circuits, and the in-progress Eurorack setup - and assorted mixers, recorders, preamps, microphones, et c. A lot of gear is also not exactly audio, like my electronics kit (parts, dev boards, tools, soldering gear) or computer stuff, so that gets confused in. We're in a small apartment and on a small income, so clutter gets intrusive quickly.

The more gear gear the better, Collecting guitars is best hobby in the world even if you cant play them all. 😅 Because those are great works of art and its great seeing them hanging on your wall. I love collecting Fenders, Ibanez, Gibson, Suhr, Charvel, PRS, ESP, Shecter, etc.
and just thinking that Vai and Joe Bonamassa has more than 400 guitars, and Cheap Trick guitarist has over a thousand. Any of You're collection is still "Not that enough".😂

Not that you need more gear, but have you looked into the Mooer gtrs 800/801 guitar at all? They could be an entire guitar gadget/gimmick video on their own.

Yes, there can be too much gear. I haven’t bought an electric guitar for 30 years. The acoustic guitar that I love was purchased in 2005 and I haven’t wanted a different one since. Two basses, one ukulele, One Mandolin, 4 guitars, let me go check my amp situation.

I love gear, but it messes with me when things aren't getting played. I have a 96 Squire strat that was my first guitar. It's been painted and rewired a couple of times. I just don't love it and it isn't worth much, so it stays around. Maybe I'll replace the neck. hmmmm.

that's my biggest fear, buying gear and not using it. My boss katana I got a lot of use out of but recently got a deluxe reverb and really only use it rarely as like a modeler plugged into my pc

I have two acoustics my first guitar and a 224k Taylor and a fender nashville telecaster with a roasted maple neck and a Taylor 12 string,I used to have 14 guitars I’m a bedroom player so I keep the ones I played the most My main problem with was when I did wanna sell one you would lose money cause someone wants to give you much less most of the time I might one more in the future but buy once and cry once unless your gigging or in a band that tours do you really need 14 guitars? Lol to each is own though

Have you ever gotten a new guitar, got excited, but then after a week of playing it you were like, “Oh… I actually don’t like it”? That was me after buying my first PRS, the SE 277 baritone, listening to demos and trying it it was like “Yeah, this works.” But a week later, meh… I gave it another week, and ended up selling it and buying a cheaper Squier Bass VI. It wasn’t my first baritone, but I think it reminded me too much of a Les Paul, and I’m a weirdo that doesn’t like Les Pauls (I love my old modded to the max SG though).

I have too many effects, not enough guitars, four perfect amps and mics, never enough cables, and never can find all of my picks. Just need a 12-string acoustic and it will be enough of everything. Effects…all unique in that they all do something different enough.
