  • While the baby was napping, I whipped up a crunchy rendition of Marcus Martin's Jenny Ran Away in the Mud in the Night played up to speed and then slowly (He actually calls it Jenny Run Away in the Mud in the Night). Anyway, I've always dug his touch on the fiddle (and banjo), and especially like the way he plays this tune. I guess this one is an early aughts fav. But his version is pretty different from how it's usually played these days, even though he's the source for it. His playing is fascinating and worth studying. His bowing is much more crunchy and sawy and less swoopy and slurry than most contemporary renditions of this one. Also his intonation is rad. I'm sure I'm missing some details and only halfway getting the intonation, but I wanted to share this in case folks were interested. Go listen to him. tuned roughly D# A# D# A# ish
    In other news, I'll be releasing a new recording with fiddle, banjo, and songs this fall. It'll be special. Please follow me to stay in the loop: josephdecosimo...

      I agree. So many of the old players made great use of them.

    I have to grin at the crazy names of some old time fiddle tunes! Great tune anyway.

    I live about 5 minutes from Swannanoa NC, the place Marcus Martin lived for much of his adult life. I knew his son, Edsel Martin, very well. I LOVE his fiddlin and you do a wonderful job on this one. I would love to hear you do more of his tunes.

      That's great, Don. And it's wonderful that you got to know his son. I do love his fiddling, banjo playing, and singing. I'm glad you appreciate what I've done with it. Thanks for the encouragement. Maybe I'll post a few more of his tunes here.

    The reverb on this sounds crazy! Apple's iphone auto-compressors are doing some wild stuff. I dig it.

    On our piano it sounds in E.

    So you’ve got this in a D tuning and not the A cross. Boy it sounds right to me.

    • @JosephDecosimo
      @JosephDecosimo  2 роки тому

      Well, even though it really low, it should still be in cross tuning AEAE relationships. I think the A will be around a D#.

      @@JosephDecosimo I am confused. Is the low string Aor D?

      I ended up with the Nancy Blevins tuning, it plays beautifully there.

    Wondering if "in the mud in the night" is a bastardized version of "in the middle of the night" 🤔
