This is such a great explanation. I've gotten a bit confused watching others do it but this by far is the way. I don't like magic loops, my tension gets all wonky. Thank you for sharing this :)
Thank you for this I’m a new knitter 3rd thing I’ve knitted is a wearable and it’s a top down lace work sweater. Was struggling with the sleeves and someone mentioned travelling loop I was like that sounds hard but you’ve made it so clear x
This is genius and exactly what I need for child size sleeves on my current project. I bought a shorter needle that still isn’t quite short enough. I’ll go back to the longer one and do this, thank you!
Finally I can knit with the travelling loop. Just couldn’t get my head round it watching other videos, don’t get me started on the magic loop 😊.. I watched your video twice… et voila it worked. Thank you so much, brilliantly explained!
I’ve watched people using Magic Loop and it always looks such a fiddle. This makes much more sense, and very well explained. I’m definitely going to give his a try. 👍
Hi I live in the UK. I also use this method of knitting and I knit combination style which after I got used to it, I now prefer it. I learned this also from utube.
This is a technique I figured out and use myself, but I did not know it had a name or anything like that. Sometimes with magic loop I like NOT having to divide the stitches to work the magic loop method around. Especially if I'm working row after row of stockinette, such as working the body of a sweater top-down. What I do is just pull out the cord I will be knitting with as far as I can, which will scrunch up all the stitches on the other end of the cord. Then I just start knitting around. If the stitches kind of space out on the cord as I work, all I have to do is grab the cord to scrunch up the stitches again and continue on. There's less fiddling this way, than if you do the traditional magic loop method of working half the stitches at a time and so on.
Thank you very much for this video. This really helped. I was trying to figure out how to use a cable that was too long for my work. As a beginner I didn’t know what to do other than buying the right size for my project. It was the only size I had. This method will help me finish a project while waiting to buy circular needles with a shorter cable. Thanks again.
Thank you! This may be the solution to my difficulties knitting the sleeves on my linen Cumulus Tee. Linen yarn is soo slippery, my DPNs kept falling out, as did my flexi flip needles. And forget magic loop, I dislike the technique. This seems so much more straightforward. Thank you again!!
It's a great alternative Shirley. Sometimes very small circumferences still require magic but I work the travelling loop until I need to switch. So much less mucking around. Let me know what you think when you try it out xx
Clo merci j avais réussi le traveling loup sans le savoir Mais ma technique grâce à vous est meilleure Mille merci je réponds en français je ne parle pas l anglais Merci merci tanke you ...hum un bon début
Thank you so much for making this video 🙏 I watched it through three times before trying the technique and was able to make it work right from my first go as your explanation is so clear. This is a brilliant new-to-me way of working smaller circumference projects in the round when I don’t have the energy for all the rearranging that goes along with magic loop, and has the added benefit of enabling me to utilise longer needle tips that don’t make my hands ache ♥️
I recently found a tutorial for retaining the tension of that last knitted stitch on the back needle! Leaving 3 or 4 stitches on the needle as you pull out the recently knitted needle one can continue knitting.... it eliminates any chance of laddering!
You can take a cable out 3-4 stitches still sitting on the right hand needle, and you can definitely avoid a ladder that way. But yeah I agree with you we don’t need to take a cable out from the left side. It’s also tedious and unmanageable I found. I don’t like the regular magic loop technique as it creates a ladder easily (had to unravel and start over a few times before…) and no one can really have perfect tension by hand (I mean that’s what the needle is for, not tension 100% by hand…) So yeah traveling magic loop without left cable sticking out is a good way to knit!
Thank you for your tutorial. As I started my first top down sweater I read a lot of references about the magic loop method. I found that method awkward. know that I have found the travelling method I am feeling much more comfortable using circular needles.
So far, the clearest explanation and tips I have seen and hear. I would prefer not to use the magic loop (extremely confusing) and with DPs I get twisted around or the stitches slide off the bottom end! 😩
Hi - so would this method work with sleeves on a child's jumper with very small circumference using short tip needles and long cable? So no decreases. Thanks
It would if you're needles are short enough. For very small circumferences I often use the Magic Loop method. I'll go get the link to my video for that xx
I bought myself some circular needles and just started knitting a hat. That's the way I was using them. I was too lazy to look up what I was supposed to be doing.
Its mix of both magic loop and travelling loop method.......not true travelling loop because you twist the cable in 8 figure while doing magic loop ,not while doing travelling loop.
This is such a great explanation. I've gotten a bit confused watching others do it but this by far is the way. I don't like magic loops, my tension gets all wonky. Thank you for sharing this :)
My pleasure. I'm so glad you found it helpful xx
Me too, i am a beginner and my magic loop always has at least one thread that is way too loose and will become a hole :)
Thank you for this I’m a new knitter 3rd thing I’ve knitted is a wearable and it’s a top down lace work sweater. Was struggling with the sleeves and someone mentioned travelling loop I was like that sounds hard but you’ve made it so clear x

Yay!! So happy you found this video!! 😘
This was incredibly helpful, thank you!

Heya, thanks for your lovely comments. So pleased this video finally made the Travelling Loop work for you. xx
Thank you for showing what happens and what to do when you're at the end of the travelling loop! (Other video's skip that part)
Omg it’s that easy?? Thank you for explaining it so concisely this will save me from having to keep a huge DPN collection, not a fan of the magic loop
thank you for changing my knitting game - i feel unstoppable now learning this, changed my life tbh
Oh I'm so pleased!! This post has made my day!
love your video! im new to knitting and the magic loop method got me pulling my hair out of frustration. Your explanation is the best!
I have used this technique for years but never knew it had a name!!
Really!! That's amazing xx
I’ve watched people using Magic Loop and it always looks such a fiddle. This makes much more sense, and very well explained. I’m definitely going to give his a try. 👍
Thank you! I was the same so thought I'd make my own video 😘
Hi I live in the UK. I also use this method of knitting and I knit combination style which after I got used to it, I now prefer it. I learned this also from utube.
Hi. Did you mean continental or European style? I think autocorrect caught you. 😕

I finally understand how to do it now ! You made my knitting life so much easier thank you
I'm so pleased 👌🏼
I’m so excited now because yours it the first tutorial of this method I actually understand 😭
Oh, I'm so pleased. Happy knitting :)
Wonderfully explained!! Thank you so much, and definitely prefer this to horrible magic loop! 😊
Oh I'm so pleased that you loved this lesson xx Birdie
Thanks so much for sharing. I will be trying this method.
My pleasure hun xx
Genius! Love knitting in the round.
Pleased you loved this video xx
Could never figure out the magic loop, so resorted to DPNs this looks even better!
So pleased this video found you x
I love it your mini lesson that make me clear and understnd.
I can't wait to practice it.

Oh that's great to hear!! So good to be able to use your larger cords for more xx

You are so welcome! Let me know if you need further assistance. Always happy to connect via video to help you xx
Traveling loop looks a lot easier than magic loop. I'll have to try it.
It's a great alternative Shirley. Sometimes very small circumferences still require magic but I work the travelling loop until I need to switch. So much less mucking around. Let me know what you think when you try it out xx
Most excellent!

Oh yay that is the best news 👌🏼
Love this! I hate DP’s, I found the Magic loop cumbersome! This looks so easy! I’m sure it will work with continental as well!
Yay!! Glad you found this helpful xx
Brilliant Kerryn!! I should have watched this ages ago. I might not HATE sleeves quite so much 😅
Oh YAY! So pleased it helped you xx
Very cool 😎
😘
😘
I love knitting in the round, but I hate magic loop. This looks awesome, thank you for sharing
Oh same. So pleased you found this helpful xx

Why does this technique keep creating double knits and double purls?? How do I resolve this?
so... it all comes down to fancy terms for using circular needles in whatever way works easiest for each knitter.
You got it xx
I think I've accidentally done this 😅 trying to do magic loop
😂😂😂me too!
Doocot by Kate Davies designs.
I bought myself some circular needles and just started knitting a hat. That's the way I was using them. I was too lazy to look up what I was supposed to be doing.
