    In my country we have several big audiobook companies that offer their entire catalog with unlimited listening time for $5-6 per month. Probably terrible for authors.
    In our case, having real competition in the audiobook space is a problem. One company started offering a month of unlimited listening for the price of 1-2 audiobooks and all the others just had to match this offer.

    • @2ToRamble
      @2ToRamble  9 місяців тому +1

      Oh wow!

    • @Sammy00_
      @Sammy00_ 9 місяців тому

      Similar here, just a bit higher price. Some 15-20 euros for the unlimited. The service providers have catalogues ranging from about 250k to 500k audiobooks. But the competition with the return offers is insane. You get deals from 0,1 € to 1€ for a period of 1 to 3 months if you resume your subscription. This allows the customers to get through the year by paying just a handful of euros if they are willing to juggle two to three service providers.
      Definitely a reminder for an aspiring writer, like me, to just do what I do because I like it and not in hopes of making any money from it.

    in spain audible, storytel, nextory etc u dont pay for a credit or a book, u pay around 10 euros (sometimes even 5) and u can listen all the books u want without a limit for that month. that said authors like sanderson or the latest popular books are not included and u have to pay for the book.

    So I came back after a meeting and you guys got into AI. I'm a programmer who dabbles in writing. I can tell you with 99% certainty that books will not be written by AI in the foreseeable future. AI can't even write code that isn't just generic StackOverflow-like boilerplate.
    Wrting a novel will be one of the last fronteers of AI. Characters have to have internal monologues, interact with the world, the plot, etc. It's insane to think AI (glorified statistical analysis) doing anything like that without massive leaps in tech. It's so overhyped right now

      @@2ToRamble There's so much else that will be replaced before novels that we'll see it coming a billion miles away.
      I'm not even sure you could call it AI at that point. It would just be inteligiece.
      The difference between story telling and other types of art, such as painting, is a novel is more than aesthetics. It's more than plot points. It's a all that plus a view into how someone experiences the world. It's just us being human in a more exciting circumstance.
      What's more likely is writers will use it to generate descriptions, or adjust style, something along those lines. I've tried using chatgpt to create little pieces of writing to use, but so far I didn't like it. Even generated paragraph seems useless

    There is a point on which I disagree with both your points of view and that is the reason why there are so many subgenres in literature (or in whatever, like in heavy metal music, for instance). The main reason is not marketing. The main reason is psychology, how human brain works. The need to categorize, to classify, to put thing in mental boxes is inherent to the human experience. Aristotle already did it, way before marketing was a "science". It's the reason why Tier lists and top 10 or 20 or infinite (the lowest form of classification) have so much success. And it's the reason why marketing uses it as a tool. And with this tendency in our psychology comes the Russian doll effect in that all boxes contain other smaller boxes, which themselves contain even smaller boxes, and so on until every individual thing has its own box. What marketing does is say "hey, this thing in its own box is inside a slightly bigger box that contain those other things that you might like too, come buy it".
    Also I don't like using the word AI for ChatGPT and things like that because, to me that isn't what real AI is supposed to be. Those algorithms only imitate (with good to amazing accuracy) what they absorb as data but are incapable of genuine, original thought, which a true AI would/should do. What we have for now are basically very good monkeys in that regard. But, I think that my main issue with calling those algorithms "AI" as to do with the world "Intelligence". I'm French/Portuguese, and in those languages "intelligence" refers almost exclusively to the ability to produce thoughts (what algorithms don't do), whereas in English "intelligence" can and often means "data".

    45:00 This got me thinking about how the increasing parasocial and aesthetic aspect of reading culture does combat against the negative effects of AI. Despite it arguably being a superficial phenomena, the whole idea of books selling more depending on the appearance and charisma of the author on social media could be a necessary "lesser evil" that negates the sterilisation of the art form, and art itself, by AI interruption.

The pandemic hit and my client load plummeted by about half. When AI hit, I lost about two thirds of what was left. I struggle to make a couple hundred dollars a week. Everyone knows you can run your work through any AI machine. My 25 year career is basically in the toilet.

There are aspects of a book that technology just can’t understand, and so a human perspective (and level of care) is invaluable. If Spotify gains prominence as an audiobook platform using this model, you will see story telling become shorter as it did with music. Or, a single book will be a series as from GraphicAudio. Shorter songs means more plays which leads to more money. Where then epic stories will end up with half the pay.

    I disagree with the premise - the very premise - that what marketers call AI will *ever* develop into a technology that can make books as good as authors can. What we call AI is just neural networks, which are just pattern-matching engines. There is no way to make them creative without making them spew nonsense, fundamentally, because this technology doesn't actually have a conceptual understanding of anything - literally just patterns. In order to make something actually cohesive, let alone culturally relevant, it would need to be aping something that already makes that point or else stumble into it stochastically like a monkey at a typewriter. And monkeys on typewriters really just end up slamming the same keys over and over anyway.

    Another point for your conversation about AI, is that just like how chess is more popular than ever nowadays because of the viral internet culture surrounding it, booktube and booktok have made reading culture more popular than ever. And it seems like it's just going to keep getting bigger.
    For many reasons these days, an author getting their book noticed is already incredibly difficult. An oversaturated market is probably one of the biggest factors, and AI will only make that worse. 9 times out of 10, the way books get noticed is through word of mouth. Publishers might play around with AI books initially, but I just don't see AI books having much of an impact on booktube, booktok, bookstigram, etc. Internet culture is a huge factor in what young people want to read, and thus, I think human authors will continue to be the ones actually getting noticed.

    • @arzabael

      In that regard one thing I’m really happy about is how concerned people are with the idea of actually owning the media you enjoy and not having it just on a platform in the ether that can disappear. the AI conversation is so interesting to me because I've been taking a class where we have been editing responses that AI have made about poems or novels, and a lot of the response is reliant on what it can find about that work on the internet. Often if the work itself isn't popular, the AI tends to give up or just uses quotes from other works to support its argument but without acknowledging that it is not from the piece its meant to be talking about. It cannot create ideas that it can't find. It's most original ideas are still typically prompted by the person running it. Everything I have read that is created by AI, lacks general understanding of the topics its asked about. It's like reading the wikipedia page for a book and then doing a presentation on it, without reading the book itself. I wonder if AI could eventually write entire original books that actually make sense, would it just be based on the works of other authors? Would there be a copyright case at some point? I don't know if I believe it's a genuine threat for novels at this point, I think it could be an issue for television a lot sooner than novels, but I definitely think it will cause some turbulence and is a super interesting topic
