My favorite chapter from Hyperion was the one of the colonel.
Y’all said it was bad, but you have to think about his perspective.
He was a warrior, a fighter and he fell in love with it. He fell in love with the battle and he would fight and meet his lover, his enemy on the other side of the battlefield. He would fight and thend he would make love to the alluring woman that haunted his dreams. The point is revealed because he crash land on Hyperion and there he found his lover, but she reveals who she is and he’s mortified. The person he pursued on each battlefield and in combat was his lover. It was like the most tragic of all the stories because he chases this dream and this love only to find out he has been groomed to be the leader of the most destructive force in the galaxy. It’s crazy and only like the third story in the book, but the brutality, the erotica, and the revelation of the truth hit really hard. He changed his whole life because he found out what he was supposedly predestined to do.

Star Trek is a pretty good one but, funnily enough THE PRIME EXAMPLE of the genre is the book the contextual used the term, UTOPIA! The dragon at the end of Name of the Wind was an atrocious addition, one I believe, was forced upon us by the publisher or agent, needing a climax at the end. That Dena was there also made it contrived and annoying. The end didn’t fit the rest of the book. But as a whole, it was still pretty great despite a trope I’d like to coin, “imbecilic choices of the main character.” His second book had the main POV doing similar stupid shit. However… by the end of it, minus the dragon, and minus his dumb choices, I walked away from both, and I recently reread them in audio, I walked away missing the world Rothfuss made and the characters he brought to life. Wise Man’s Fear was superior to the first. I am a fan.

maybe you're just associating the Dystopian genre with shitty YA Dystopian novels which flooded the markets in the 2000s, lmao. I personally think some of the best speculative fiction is dystopian - 1984, Fahrenheit 451, The Handmaid's Tale, and many others. I disagree that The Poppy War is dystopian though, the plot doesn't take place in the middle of an oppressive regime, it takes in the middle of war and revolution

If you want historical fantasy, you should read Guy Gavriel Kay's stuff. I recommend starting with Tigana, Sailing to Sarantium, or the Lions of Al-Rassan. The thing is they don't have magic or fantasy creatures and stuff like that, so if you don't like that then maybe don't read it. His books are masterpieces though. And also the Grace of Kings, which you're going to read, I believe, is great. A bit odd, though, in its structure and the way it's written . . . you'll understand when you read it.

Mistborn - Hero of ages - slight spoiler incoming
The threat of extinction here is the main issue to get invested I'd say. The characters etc. Make it great but the book wouldn't work without a scope of that magnitude.
Everything up until now was dystopian and dreadful wars to some degree but the level of desperation the Hero of ages brings to the table needed a world ending (extinction) threat in order to be convincing and also in order to increase the tension and elevate the scope of the trilogies ending

I love Name of the wind and I have to disagree with Ol' Richard here. Austin. I think you would love it as well. Setting whatever feelings you may have about the author aside. I think the worldbuilding, characters, and magic system is some of the most interesting content in modern fantasy.
There are plenty of great characters, who have deep flaws. Kvothe, the main character is often said to be a Mary Sue and uninteresting, but I disagree! He is such a flawed character who makes a ton of mistakes but has a talent of actually learning from his mistakes (except from one tragic aspect in his life). I highly recommend reading it. I would say Outlaw Star is the perfect example of sci-fi fantasy. From Jean Starwind having a gun that shoot special and expensive bullets that cast powerful spells to him trying to figure out on how to defeat supernatural foes eith abilities that far exceed his. Just following the simple rule that not everyone has the access to magic can open doors to great dynamic storytelling.
