This should be mandatory training before you can buy a boat. It takes me about 15 seconds to launch my Malibu and I'm constantly waiting for people who take 10min plus on the launch ramp. Thanks for the vid, I will share this with all the slow pokes 😂
Super helpful Tim. I'm getting more and more comfortable every launch & load with my 13' zodiak, but hoping to move up to a ski boat next year. Great tips about getting the wife comfortable backing the trailer. That will be a must with a bigger boat for us.
Great tutorial, Tim! I taught my wife in an empty parking lot before I taught her on the ramp. And she's the one who always drops the trailer in, and is great at it. If I may add a few extra things from my experience to your list. I like how your main message is to be as efficient as possible so you're not holding others up. But there is a point when people become a problem because they become selfish & impatient. This puts others at risk so I always try to remind people that there are times to slow down, pay attention to what's going on around them, and if necessary, just wait a little bit so space opens up on the ramp/dock. If you have to solo launch (I do it a lot), when getting your boat ready for launching, make sure to have your buoy's & dock ropes already attached in place on the cleats so once you're in the water & you're coming into the dock, you're ready to tie up immediately & can get your truck out of the water. And depending on the type of docks that are at your lake, always try to tie your boat up either in an inside slip (so it's out of the way), or if you don't have slips, tie up to one end of the dock, so the remainder of the dock is still accessible for others to use for pick up/drop off. Nothing more frustrating than a clueless boater that parks right in the middle of the dock and leaves no space for anyone else. Love your channel & keep the excellent video's coming!
@@wake_mann Any time! People have asked me to make similar videos for my channel, and if I ever do, I'll be referencing your channel as well as some of the CWB's channels (with Trevor Hansen) from a few years ago. If you haven't seen those, have a look, they're hilarious!
All about efficiency and courtesy is good. But, it goes both ways. Folks with mobility issues may take awhile longer, even though they’re doing the best they can. Not everyone can hop or jump in the boat. Glad you referenced the issue at the end
Thank you. I don't have any experience really with launching or loading. I may do things unintentionally and out of ignorance but I try. It is also really helpful for other's patience for those less experienced.
Great video! Sometimes I see some boaters prep their boat including the plug and bimini top on the busy ramp slope (which is very dangerous and inefficient) I guess it all depends on the boater's experience, but I hope video educate more boaters. These are some good tips that you can't learn from the book. Also if you had to launch you boat on the dock, moving your boat to the edge of the dock would help other boaters. Basically, don't be selfish at the ramp!
As a solo fisherman about 95% of the time, that's what I do. Move it to the very end of the dock or to the opposite side of the ramp. In this video both ramps share the dock so can't go to either side to get out of the way.
I've had a 24 foot Chaparral I/O sterndrive boat for years and can steer it pretty well around the dock. However this year I am buying a Malibu wake boat and I've heard that inboards are much more difficult to maneuver around the dock. Is this true?
Very true, I made a video to provide tips on steering an inboard at low speeds. Do a but of research and practice in open water and with time you will have it down.
Thankyou for this excellent tutorial. I've never tried launching from a slipway as I usually launch and recover from the beach, but I would love to give it a go. I think like most things if you have someone with you and you work as a team then it would be much easier. Best wishes from Northern Ireland 👍🇬🇧
This video was extremely helpful. I was raised around boats, from aluminum “Lund” ( with roller bunks) to a 20’ liberator with a 7.4 bravo( my 1st boat), to bayliner style bow riders, and numerous jet skis…(which surprisingly are the biggest pita to back trailers up) to now a vdrive… which is a different animal. The torque steer from the prop is the biggest challenge i faced… just dealing with it. Its something I took for granted with my out drives. I am now able to launch and retrieve my tige solo… I will certainly hog the dock for 5-10mins is the only draw back to going solo…. But with the wife helping… I dont need or really want to be near the dock( my rub rail is MINT, and want it to stay that way). Thanks again… when I was green to vdrives these videos really taught me a lot.
just wait your turn,! if im at the ramp before you then it's my turn and if im not doing it fast enough for you then help.because i will always try to help others in front of me if they need it.
Always end up going by myself. Went with roller trailer. Put boat in to a spot. Set brakes. Push boat off tie up, park. Reverse to load. Longest time is walking to and from park spot. Cant run anymore.
I hear ya Bill. Sometimes nature is best enjoyed alone. You are not doing anything wrong. Keep enjoying the lake while you can! I'm sure the fact that you watched my video and left this comment means you are being as courteous as possible.
You scared me with the unhook the boat before you get in the water. My dad use to do that when I was young and our small inboard/outboard ended up on the pavement. Have nightmares about to this day and it happened 15 years ago. All it takes is once lol
Great video. Last thing I want to do is hurt someone else's boat. Or people! I go slow backing in (because Im ok) but then speed up all the other aspects.
Thank you! Yea, as long as we are all conscious of others and their time on the water in addition to our own, I think we can make the boat ramp/dock a better place.
This must be a boat ramp/launch built by Yankees cuase where I’m from the floating dock is off to one side or other of the ramp with a nice walkway to it
Yea but i fish alone 90% of the time I’d rather unload tie to dock walk up get truck park etc then have to pull up to the dirt an not get close enough to dry land an get feet wet trying to jump or something if it’s cold so the dock off to the side seems more legit to me but everybody likes different things though
Hi Colby, it's a 77 gallon tank and if I were to surf it for 8 hours then it would have 30 to 25% left. I generally can go 2 to 3 days on a tank as I never surf it 8 hours straight. Thanks for the comment!
I’m usually have a lot of patience with difficulties driving boat or backing trailer. It’s the backing the trailer down to tip of water then 3 car loads of people start loading the boat up and ice chests on the ramp parked right in the middle so no one can launch. Worse than that air up tubes on the ramp.
Then there’s guys like me who solo fish and screw y’all’s process up. I will say though I try to be quick and always jog from my truck to the dock where my boat is tied.
My brother owns Jetskis but still makes me back him in because he can't do it. I think he is too stressed because of the pressure put on at boat ramps. + lakes looks very straight forward in comparison to rivers or sea with tides, wind, current
I agree, all those things can be stressful. The more you do it, the less those things seem stressful. High winds still stress me a lot when loading the boat.
Thanks for this video. We (wife and I), understand a little inexperience, so we give space for that. Our biggest anger-point is when people (ESPECIALLY pwc’rs), park in the staging area after leaving the lake, to pack up the vehicle, gear, and cover the craft or boat. That’s what the parking lot is for idiots! MOVE! 🇨🇦👍🏼
Taught my wife and son to launch and load the boat first. Hope to get them both to learn backing the trailer soon. They both have spent their entire lives around the lake, myself only about 30+ years now but I do all the backing. Mostly because the long walk to and from the ramp. But we have a system either way and to me that's the most important thing is building that system or getting ready, launch, load, and then putting everything away and ready for highway. Great video boss and keep up the good advice. In AZ where we boat, there's always someone fishing on the boat dock which isn't supposed to happen either so more to dodge haha
Haha, I hear ya Matt. My wife didn't know anything about driving a boat or backing a trailer before I met her but I insisted she learn and now she gets complimented on a regular basis. Sometimes the only solution is the one that sucks.
@@wake_mann That last sentence is some words of wisdom. Very true. Thats what Im pushing my wife to do this season, is have her learn to pull the trailer in and out. Yep. You're forgetting some of us. I'm a single father so I have no choice. My kids got yelled at last weekend for waiting with the boat while I parked.
