I never follow fashion trends or house trends. I wear what I want to wear. I have worn the same clothes for years and I love it. I decorate my house with the things I love. This way when I am home surrounded by the decor I love and wearing my super comfy clothes I feel at peace and I never feel like I am missing out. I couldn’t imagine dressing to a trend that I don’t like or looks good on me just to be “in style”. I always say…if you wear what YOU love and decorate with what YOU love it will never go out of style.

Great tips! When I get to the end of the bottles for dish soap, shampoo and laundry detergent, I add water and shake it around and I end up getting a bunch more uses because of the soap residue mixing w/ the water. Also using less than the amount the manufacturer suggests usually is fine too…especially w/ laundry detergent.

Hi Emmy & Paul! Thanks again for another great video. It always feels like a visit with a good friend watching you! I recently had the idea to put an extra plain flat sheet on top of my clean top sheet & blankets. Sleeping w/pets makes the blanket need washing much more. It's easier & cheaper to wash the extra top sheet instead of washing the blanket so often! 🍃🍂🌻🍂🍃

I do buy packaged treats for my dogs but I cut each treat into 4 pieces. They don't know how big or small of a treat they're getting, they just know that they're getting one. So a bag of 40 treats becomes 160 treats.

The vet recommended I make super healthy and cheap treats for my pup. You scrub a sweet potato and leave skin on. Cut it in wide slices (like 1/2") and place on a baking sheet on parchment. Don't add oil or anything else. You bake each side for 30 minutes at 200-250 degrees. That concentrates the sweetness and you can cut in small pieces. Never met a dog who didn't LOVE these. People too. Easy, fast, and cheap to make and you avoid the many additives in commercial treats.

My Mom's Minpin needed to lose a few pounds so the Vet suggested giving him frozen green beans as a treat. Mom brakes them into a couple pieces and he loves them. He barks at her every night around 8:30 if she is "late" with his yummy frozen green bean treats. She sometimes has him shake hands, sit pretty, then roll over and he gets one treat after each trick. It's hilarious. ❤️ that sweet puppy and his (and my) awesome Mom.

I make my own fire starters. There are several options. Small rolls of corrugated cardboard dipped in liquid wax (collect candle scraps) (be careful) or mix sawdust with wax. You can even take dried used tea bags and dip them in wax.
I collect nut shells that can be dried and used as kindling. Use what you have.

Such great tips! My newest endeavor is to make my own tea blends from the five different mints that I grow. I dehydrate the mints and then I pick and choose the mint or mints that I’m in the mood for. To them I add citrus peel, apple peel or any other fruit that I have fresh or have dehydrated. Spices like cinnamon stick, whole cloves or any other spices that you like ,are a nice warm addition when the weather changes. This type of tea is good both hot or cold.

I'm retired and have a big house full of stuff in trying to purge so there are not a lot of household things I need. Actually I keep donating a lot of excess items to charities trying to clear things out.. So when my grown children want to buy me a gift for my birthday or Christmas, I ask that they get me items I can "use up". Scented candles, Bath and Body soaps and lotions, gourmet chocolates, coffees and teas etc. That works out great as they know I use and appreciate what they give me and I seldom have to buy these items for myself.

I just found and subscribed to your channel. I am retired 3 years now and live in Ontario Canada. I downsized my home just before retirement and still have a mortgage but it's small. Living on a modest pension I chose a cottage style home by the lake where my life is simplified from the craziness of being a single parent and nursing for 40 years. Yes peaceful. I am learning to grow some vegetables but have a lot to learn yet. I practice many of the tips you talked about today. My technology is old, my chromebook is outdated as is my 7 year old phone. I gave up home phone service years ago and also have a roku and no cable. I found those plastic snake drain cleaners years ago and gave them to my friends as part of a Christmas gift one year. My house is not fancy but is cozy and I absolutely love it. I long ago stopped buying into the consumerism I was once was addicted to. I did have to purchase a new car a year or so ago because my 13 year old RAV died. I found the least expensive base model vehicle I could find at the lowest interest rate. While this is upsetting I live more rural and need reliable transportation and used cars were the same price with higher interest rates. Funny that I have little interest in discretionary spending now. What freedom. Thank you Emmy and I look forward to binge watching your videos.

Washing machine repair techs will tell you not to use fabric softener and that most people use way too much detergent when they do a load of laundry. They recommend using white vinegar as a fabric softener if you want to put something in your load of laundry. They also recommend using the measuring cup on the side of the liquid detergent and go up to like the lowest line unless you've got some extremely dirty clothes then add a little bit more. I use the wool dryer balls in my dryer. I don't really have a good way to line dry my clothes so I often use the dryer. Since I only drink one or two mugs of coffee a day, I recently purchased a $10 coffee maker that makes five cups of coffee which is about the same as two mugs and I bought some very flavorful ground coffee. I have decided to give up my K-Cups as they are just getting too expensive. Even though I can buy a large box at Sam's Club for under $0.45 per pod, it is still a way that I can cut back on expenses. I'm going to give this a try and if I don't care for it, I can always go back to the pods.nn I do purchase half and half to put to my coffee but like you, I don't buy the flavored syrups or creamers. They contain a lot of sugar and preservatives that I really am not interested in having. I like your suggestion on pajamas Emmy! Since I had my stroke, putting on long sleeve tops is very difficult for me so I will frequently buy 3/4 length sleeved t-shirts when I get them on sale and I will also keep pajama pants that I find a good deal on or sweatpants and that's generally what I will wear to sleep in. The 3/4 length sleeved t-shirts keep me warmer but are also manageable for me to get on and off pretty easily. I like many of these tips Emmy. Some of them I can definitely use but others given my situation don't really work for me because of my physical limitations but I appreciate how much you and Paul are always good at emphasizing that everyone's frugal journey is different and if you need to hire something out, hire it out. If you need or want to buy a particular product then do it but there might be something else you're willing to give up in its place. As long as we all are comfortable with our own frugal journey and don't judge others for theirs, it's all good. I hope you have a wonderful weekend and hello to Dixie Belle from gigi, Henry and Yoda!

User error as I have friends who use the permanent kcup filter. I'm disabled from a stroke and only have the use of one arm. That probably has something to do with the fact that I'm not very coordinated in using the permanent filter cup. I appreciate the suggestion though!

Lots of smart tips! I do a bunch of little things that add up. When I dropped off a donation at Salvation Army this week, I popped in to their shop. I found a perfect travel rain jacket to replace one I've had for 25 years. It seemed pricey ($15), but I checked the company's website, and it's selling for $149. Lucky find I will really enjoy! I use glass food containers to avoid buying plastic. While the shower is warming up, I save the water in jugs and use in the garden. I dry clothes on the line or use dryer balls for a few minutes if the weather is bad and then hang clothes inside. I always pack snacks, water, and lunches when we're out and about. If appropriate, I check to see if a store does price matching. That can save a bundle. When I'm in the mood to shop, I'll call a friend, take a walk, or "shop" in the basement to find some forgotten treasure. We have potluck meals and play Trivial Pursuit. We go on hikes or picnics. We explore all the treasures of the library, and the list goes on and on!

I buy Dawn dishwashing liquid and I have a bottle that was a dawn foam bottle, which I have had for Years and I do the same way as I do with hand soap! It works perfectly and cleans my dishes and pots. The only thing I wasted money on was the sink thing. I have bought 2 and they did not work for me. I use colorful bandanas instead of napkins (I learned that from Pioneer Woman). This year, I decorated my house for fall with pumpkins, and leaves and acorns I picked up while walking home from work. It feels so much cozier, and in November I plan to cut the pumpkins up and cook with them. I buy a canister of oats, and then premeasure sandwich baggies with oats and brown sugar. That way I can have quick oatmeal before work without buying instant oatmeal (which is getting expensive). I walk wherever I can. Just some tips. : ) Miko from Maryland

My cats cat tree needed to be replaced. But instead of going out to buy a new one. I stripped all the old cheap covering the factory used. Being it was only the pole parts of the tree my furbabies tore up that is the only parts l removed. I went to $Tree and bought 12 packages of their white nautical rope that was 11 inches long (note: make use you check each tag for amount, they differ in how much is actually there). Then l pulled out my glue gun and glue sticks. For my furbabies pole it took 3 packages of the rope. Took me about a week in a half to wrap and glue the rope onto get pole. Not that young any more. Hahaha. The cat tree coast me about 35$ when l original bought it and that was the on sale price. I got it at a 50 percent sale day. So in just replacing the torn parts of the tree it only cost me the 12$ for the rope (this was before they raise to $1.25) and 8$ for a large package of gorilla sticks. And l actually have a nicer looking cat tree that will last even longer now for my furbabies.

I do some, but not all, the things you do. I also wash and reuse ziploc bags. I have done this for so many years that I don’t even think about it. I probably use a tablespoon or two of laundry detergent to do a load. I don’t measure, but the big jug from Costco lasts well over a year. I’m 4 months into a new jug and it is not even a quarter gone yet-it’s still very heavy lol. Our clothes just aren’t that dirty, and they come clean. We use bath towels for about a week. I started this years ago when all the kids were home and I got tired of washing a load of towels a day. I regrow my green onions a couple times before throwing them away.

Right now, I can feed an assortment of wild life with my veggie scraps in a manner and quickly enough that they dont attract unwanted wildlife. But when I can't, I veggie pit by digging a hole, dumping them, and covering with dirt. I don't like to use above ground compost piles for veggie scraps 'cause they attract unwanted, 4 legged and flying critters. When composting vegetable garden left overs, I layer with dirt, bagged steer manuer, or barn cleanings to speed the process up and as a detractant. Currently, I save my used coffee grounds and crumple my egg shells in them then use the mix as a top dressing for acid loving plants and trees. - These types of things are either heavy or volumous in the garbage can. They are also good, free-ish nutrients for the plants.

Hi folks, greetings from the U.K. another great video, full of sound ideas again, thank you for sharing. Like the rest of the world, energy prices are skyrocketing, thankfully my contract is fixed until Oct 2023, but it does not stop me from finding ways to be frugal. I live on my own so each morning I fill two 1.5litre catering flasks with boiling hot water. This does my hot drinks for the day and also washing up after my main meal. My electricity consumption has reduced considerably from doing this. I have also installed several rechargeable LED motion detector lights in certain areas around my home so I don't have to switch on the normal lights (I recharge them via the USB port when using my computer) Small steps I know but every little helps. My late Mom would call these 'Saveations'. Thanks again for sharing.

We also use a drip coffee maker as we think the Keurig coffee maker brews a terrible cup of coffee. Maybe it was my fault, but I had one of those plastic drain snakes to break off in our bathroom sink drain. I couldn't get the broken piece out of the drain so I don't know where it's at now! I don't use fabric softener sheets for my laundry, but I use them to wipe down my baseboards. It helps repel dust, and I don't have to clean them as often. Thanks for your frugal and useful tips and advice.....probably the best on UA-cam!

My uncommon tip is that I try not to use zip-loc sandwich bags very often. Have a leftover cookie? Put it in a little washable food storage container. A half of a green pepper? Into a container for the fridge. I also have several bees wax wraps to use in place of plastic wrap. I hate to use a baggie for 24 hours and then throw it away! Every penny counts! :)

I didn’t know this and had a Phone that hadn’t been updated with security for three years. Yikes! So now I know. When my phone will no longer except security updates, that’s when I have to get a new phone. When I did get my new phone, I got the latest model because I will be keeping this phone as long as possible. Just my two cents!

Hi, Emmy and Paul, thanks for the video! We use a coffee percolator like our grandmothers had because it can brew coffee on a camp stove, grill or campfire during power outages. I save my dish soap bottle when empty . I take a little fabulosa cleaner with a few tablespoons of Dawn ,fill the rest of the bottle with water. I use this to clean my toilet every few days ,it makes the bathroom smell nice . I boil the skin and bones from a rotisserie in my crockpot overnight ,I freeze the strained broth in 1 cup baggies to use later in soups, casseroles, dressing ,sauces or rice . I do a big batch of taco soup, chili ,meatloaf or taco meat when I find a good deal on ground beef . I freeze it in individual portions in the gladware containers that sandwich meat comes in . I have a quick easy meal when I don’t want to cook. When soap or shampoo bottles are empty I fill them with water and shake ,I usually get another 3 uses out of the bottle.

I do all the exact same things you do to be frugal except for one. My coffee pot is a little pricier. I have one with a carafe. My husband drinks tea, I drink coffee, so instead of keeping the coffee pot running the whole time keeping my coffee hot, I have one with a carafe and that keeps my coffee hot for much longer and saves on electricity. I am also big on reusing things over and over, like ziplock bags, parchment paper, and aluminum foil which all get washed and stored away for the next use. I must say this is one of the most frugal things I do that saves me tons of money. I also have silicone mats that are washable and reusable. If you look at the price of cooking and prepping materials we use to cook a meal… wow! Ziplocks are like $7 or more for one box! I also reuse plastic food containers for seed starting. I do not buy special containers. Before I throw something away, I ask myself if there is another use for the trash. Even coffee grounds are used for not only composting, but I grow button mushrooms in the winter in coffee grounds. And use the grounds to fertilize my berry plants during the growing season. This is lengthy, so I’ll stop, or I will chat all day. Lol! Waste not, want not. Love your channel and all you and Paul do! 💕

I've used those little drain cleaners for a long time. At first I bought one. I used it many, many times over but eventually, the small little tines wore away. I bought a package of 3, which said they were 1 time use. Well, that's what the company wants you to think, so you'll buy more. I've been using the 1st out of that package for a couple of years now!
Plastic can also leech some of its chemicals into your food. That happens in microwaves, too.
I'm using up the fabric sheets and liquid softener I have. I bought wool balls, and I recently heard you can simply wad up a couple of balls of aluminum foil to keep static out of clothes. I can't hang my clothes outside because I'm allergic to grass and trees. I hang some in the basement, but in the winter, that doesn't work so well. I do hang clothes in the basement when I can, and put them in the dryer after they're dry.
I've never had a Keurig because I have coffee makers that work. I have only a tiny bit of counter space in the kitchen, so I put the coffee maker away. I use a French press that gets washed and put away after each use. The coffee's terrific! It makes just about 2 cups, which is all I'll drink in a day and it's easy to make more if someone stops over. When I used my regular coffee maker, like Paul, I used a metal, use over and over filter.
I don't have a TV. Haven't had one in decades and decades. Other electronics I don't buy unless I absolutely have to. I bought a computer when I went back to school for a mid-life career change. It was right at the cusp of laptops. When it finally died, I got a laptop, so I've never had a desk top computer. A co-worker talked me into a smart phone when my little flip phone died. I willed that smart phone to last over 5 years. When a phone is that expensive, it has to last a long time. I've had a couple more since then. I use them till they die the death. With no TV, I've never had cable.
I used to buy prepared meals, but as the amount of contents went down and the price went up, I stopped that. It was easy because I live alone. Almost never buy pre-cut fruits and veggies. Once in a blue moon, I have in the past, for lack of time. Never thought of weighing bags if fruits and veggies...what a good idea! I've called company numbers. When I compliment them, I never received a coupon. If I have a complaint, that's when I get a coupon! Seems like they'd want to send coupons to those who take the time to call with compliments.
I've diluted hand soaps for decades. It feels way too thick to use full force hand soap now. It doesn't have to be foaming. It works with any hand soap.
Oh, I shop off season for things like pajamas...really everything, especially long john's!
To save money, I turn the stove off at the breaker box, so I don't pay for phantom electricity. I only turn it on to cook, and then off again. I unplug everything that has a light or lighted clock in it. I have a clock in the kitchen. I don't need one on the stove or microwave. They use electricity. When I grocery shop online, I can see the total before I check out. I can see exactly what and how many of everything I've bought, and go back through to take items out of my cart till the total price fits my budget. Online shopping keeps me from impulse buys of things I'd see in the store. There is a fee for using that service, but it still saves me money. I never buy plastic trash bags....unless I'm moving, because there are always a few items that didn't fit in a box. After they're used for a move, I put them away for another move sometime in the future. For trash bags, I use what comes into the house as I shop. Now, I don't shop very much at all, so I might have to start buying some trash can liners. Everything I buy, I try to keep it as new looking and functioning as possible for as long as possible. It takes years and years for me to need to buy new items. My 1st microwave lasted 27 years. I've had the same toaster oven for 35 years. It still works fine. I bought a used 1966 sewing machine when I first made my own home. It still works fine. I've had to jerry-rig a few parts along the way as little pieces broke of and got lost. I don't think there's anything unusual about what I do to save money...but some things have been kind of extreme. I'll go there and try things out. 😊
Love to you, Paul, Dixie Belle and Loris! ❤😀

@@adventuregirlmama Sorry, I didn't see this! We brine boneless skinless chicken breasts and rinse them off. We use different seasonings on them, anything like homemade taco seasoning, BBQ seasonings, and bunch of different ones from Aldi. My husband cooks them on the grill, we refrigerate until the next day, then slice them up. We have a meat slicer which makes this very easy to do. Then we get out the foodsaver and vacuum seal packs about a pound each or so. Just throw them in the freezer. The pork loin gets done the same except no brining. The roast beef gets seasoned and I roast it in the oven. When we cook the chicken we usually cook up 8-10 breasts at one time, pork loin usually 3, and roast beef is 2. They turn out so good and taste far better than cold cuts from the store!

For dried spices, open rice packages, and to store extra little things. I have experimented with Chap stick. You get to the end of the little tube, and I dig out what is left, and put it into another, shocking how much is left in that tube. I pack a lunch every day when I got to work, with a drink, bottled water, and snacks. all in reusable containers. I also, make quilts out of old Jeans and clothes, to snuggle with on the couch. I am a sewer. Years ago when raising children l use to have to buy the same pattern on 3 or 4 different sizes. This was before they started making patterns the way they do now. Now l learned the hard way when the new patterns started showing up, l cut out the size l needed. Bad idea. So even though it is a little time consuming l trace out the size l need with all the markings. Then l get the gallon zip lock bags from $Tree. I put the original pattern and the pieces l traced out in the bag. This way l still have the original to where l can trace out any other size l need. I also like to go to stores that have free clothing or very cheap clothing not so much to wear but to repurpose. For example l had these shorts l wore until l worn them out. The fabric was still good just couldn't repair where the short ripped. So pulled out my seam ripper took them apart went into my pattern collection and made a shorts out for my 2 year old Great Grand-daughter. The top was made from an old white pillowcase. The top had a bow across the back which matched the shorts. The price of material has gotten so high l just don't buy unless l get a really good discount. My daughter when she was younger needed a new winter coat one year. Usually l could hand down her sisters things to her. But this particular year it was the way around. I l went into my stash found and old quilted mattress cover went to store got a bottle of Rite Dye. Then since my Dad never used his pj tops Mom gave to me. So l had removed all the buttons and put in a old bear shape animal cookie container. I found the buttons l needed then went to my patterns. Made my daughter a nice new coat and no one knew it was homemade until l was asked where l bought it. I used my Dad's pj tops to make shirts for my son's. I don't toss out zippers or buttons.

Great video! I just picked up a few summer pajama sets for my adult daughters at $2.00 each from Walmart. These will make wonderful Christmas gifts for them.

Just FYI regular old bleach will dissolve hair before it clogs, an old ready to retire told a friend's husband, have your wife pour bleach down the drain each week, the bleach dissolves the hair, if its not there it can clog up!ive been doing this for years now & rarely have a slow drain . Let alone a clog due to hair, my hair is chin length, both if my daughters have very long thick hair both past their arm pits! In my area centralCA plumbers are expensive bleach is less than $5/ gallon. I can buy several gallons of bleach for the cost of 1plumbers visit!

Lots of great tips! I find it funny that these are "uncommon" as these are all common to our family. 😀I also do the foam soap thing, but a little differently- I'll use the shower gel and mix 1 part shower gel: 3 (or 4) parts water. I'll get the little travel sized bath gels for free from BBW when I get a coupon, so free foaming soap! I'll also get the holiday scents (we LOVE Twisted Peppermint!) at the Semi-Annual sale at BBW after Christmas for up to 75% off, keep them for next year, then make up a Mason jar of foaming refill when it gets to be that season in the coming year. We've used 1 bottle of shower gel to make foaming hand soap for about 4 years running now! I'll also make foaming soap out of my shower gel to use in the shower. I'll turn the shower off while I'm sudsing up to save water, use the foaming shower soap so I can get a good lather while I have the water off, then turn the tap back on when I'm in need of a rinse. 🚿 Another uncommon tip- I make my own yogurt! The kind of yogurt I like (Yoplait's Oui French style) is currently $1.35 in the store... I'll buy one of those, a carton of whole milk, and make a batch to pour into clean Oui glass jars from previous batches, then put them in my Instant Pot to incubate. Voila! 9 jars of yogurt for $3.00ish. Plus, I know what's going into it. Give my regards to Miss Dixie-Belle!

I make my own coffee creamer (plant based), tooth powder and mouthwash, things like that. Sometimes (rarely) I will buy something ready made just so I can exam it more closely in order to then make it myself. I agree with everything you said! There are so many little ways to save that often get forgotten about, or not thought of in the first place!

First time watching, and I am really enjoying your tips! Thanks.
We have an older male cat, who frequents the litter box often... About 6 months ago, I replaced his expensive cat litter with hardwood pellets for pellet stoves. Amazing savings of more than $20.00 per month. No scooping, just replacing his pellets daily. It is working great !

A 40lb bag of Equine Pine pellets (for horses) is the exact same thing as Feline Pine sold for cats only WAY cheaper. 40lbs is under 7.00 at Tractor Supply. I used that for 10 years on my 2 cats. I used about 2 - 3 bags a year. 14.00 - 21.00 for entire year of cat litter.

For me, dryer balls (wool) are a great investment that saves me money over spending it on dryer sheets. Clothes are static free and soft. 🎉
