When my kids were younger I’d meet a friend with similar aged kids at the playground or sprinkler park. We’d scavenge our refrigerator and cabinets for food we were trying to “get rid of”/eat up before it went bad, and easy snacks foods. We set everything out on the park’s picnic table for us and the kids. Such great memories and such an easy & fun night. We also lived in an area with lots of sprinkler parks. One day each summer I’d invite all of our friends to join us for a “Sprinker park crawl”. We’d go to 3 different parks and have breakfast at one park, lunch at another, and order pizza at the last park for dinner. Some friends would join us for the whole day, others would join us for one meal/park. What a day!!!!!
Hi😊 We live in Norway, by the sea. It gives us the opportunity to catch a lot of the fish we eat for the rest of the year. In Norway, we can fish for free in the sea, so this saves us a lot of money. We also have a small container garden where we grow some vegetables. Thank you so much for an inspiring channel.
My summertime tip is to eat before you go to an event, amusement park, etc. If you have to travel before getting there pack a picnic lunch. That way you can get right to the fun when you get there and save money on food inside the event. Also, if the establishment let's you leave, go to your car, and come back to the event you can pack a picnic and leave it in an ice packed cooler and save even more money.
we learned this the hard way after moving back to the US from overseas... We went to the local county fair, and some mozzarella sticks were 15$, a lemonade 10$, a small slice of pizza 8$... WTF???
Hi Emmy and Paul. I make up my own coleslaw for the week and put some in jars of salt water and the rezt in a bowl ready for that days or twos dinner. Only adding enough mayonnaise for my taste. My home food garden is growing well for my first year in my new home and i am preparing for nect years asking family and friends for old plant posts and trays and cardboard. I enjoy the planning as it helps so much with keeping tra k of everything. Hugs and blessings from leicestershire England xx
When my kids and grandkids were younger, and during covid shut-down, we did a lot of picnics. Even peanut butter sandwiches taste better on a picnin! We also keep our eyes out for free outdoor concerts and movies often put on by local communities and libraries.
To save money, I can as much as I can. I grow a garden. I do make a kitchen sink salad, but I also make a kitchen sink soup! I make all kinds of pickles and relishes. Let me tell you, a taco with corn relish on it is fantastic and I have yet to see it on a menu. BBQ sandwich (from home canned pork butt) with home canned pickled coleslaw -yum. It goes together faster (and cheaper) than a drive through. I know not everyone cans, but having these different types of condiments / sides at home really makes eating at home a much better experience than going out. I also take the bottom parts of celery (bottom 3 - 4 inches) separate it, wash it, chop it, and freeze it. Toss it in something hot, but is also great in tuna or chicken salad (holds texture) and I also did this with the onions I grew for cooking. I grew my own convenience items. Anyone can do this and if you can't, UA-cam can show you.
Found it!! If anyone wants to give it a try!! Corn Cob Jelly INGREDIENTS 12 corncobs (kernels removed)* 1 package fruit pectin (1¾ ounces) 4 cups granulated sugar Water INSTRUCTIONS Directions: In a large stockpot add empty corncobs to 6-8 cups of water. Bring to a boil and boil for 10-15 minutes. Remove corncobs and strain the liquid through a fine-mesh strainer into another container. Measure out 3½ cups of the reserved liquid back into the pot and stir in the powdered fruit pectin. Bring to boil. Stir in sugar and bring back to a boil. Boil hard for 5 minutes, stirring constantly. Skim and discard any foam that forms at the top. You can add a drop or two of yellow food coloring if you wish to give your jelly a more yellow appearance. Ladle the liquid into 5 to 6 pint-sized clean canning jars or jelly jars. You can use the jelly right away, in which case simply let the jelly cool and store jars in the fridge for up to 2 weeks (give some to friends and family). If you plan on canning in a hot water bath, please follow proper canning instructions. Properly canned jars of corncob jelly will keep in the pantry for up to 2 years. Note: After you remove the cobs from the stockpot, save them and dry them out in the sun to make fire starters!
Prices are high in The Netherlands too. Normally we would buy ice cream with our kids once or twice a week when the wheather is hot but when I looked at how much It costs us in a month I looked for a cheaper alternative. We decided that getting ice cream at a shop would be a special treat. Now I buy ice cream in the supermarket so they can still enjoy an affordable nice cold ice cream on a hot summer day. Saves a lot of money.
My summertime money saving tip is to can all the fruits and vegetables that are in abundance to use year round and that saves you money in the winter to just be able to go to your canning shelves and pull what you want.
Used is ok as long as it is in decent shape. Look at the bottom of the pan and make sure it’s not warped. You don’t want rust in it either. Water bath canners have this sometimes when they’re used. Pressure canners - you might also have to buy a new seal for it and you always want to reach out to your extension office to have your pressure gauge tested. If you get a new one the gauge is already regulated for the first year. Presto is a good canner and is not terribly expensive if you decide to go with a new one. I bought used water bath but went with the new pressure canner. You’ll do good! It’s fun to learn
I agree with everything Kristina said. At first I was intimated but I put my big girl pants on, watched a lot of you tube videos, and started with something easy like green beans and tomatoes. Then I just picked up steam from there. Last year I canned 135 jars of fruits, vegetables, soups, stews, salsa, you name it. It is fun, a money saver and such an accomplishment when you look at your canning shelves and know you can feed your family.
Emmy I can not tell you how many times during the week I say to myself "Don't waste food." You have had such a positive impact on me. The other day I made a salad with some leftover turkey and a pear that needed to be used up. I shredded some cheese. (NEVER BUY PRESHREDDED PER EMMY) and a few nuts I had in the cabinet. As I was eating I thought, Emmy would be so proud!! You have no idea just how far your influence travels. Big thanks to you and Paul (love his gardening tips!) Your hard work is truly appreciated.
I always tried to not waste food. But since watching Emmy, I am really more conscious of what's in the refrig. Today, I am making my left over egg and bread crumbs that are in the freezer in 2 small containers. The pancakes taste good and will freeze extras to take out and use in the future. They can just be popped in the microwave. I also rearranged some things so that my mixer does not have to be picked up and moved each time I want to use it. It was getting to heavy for me and I wasn't making things like I use to. So now my kitchen aid mixer and bread machine can sit on the table and I can use right there. Today I hope to make FMS hot cocoa brownie mix from last June. I passed up buying Christmas hot cocoa mix that was reduced to almost nothing and also gave away hot cocoa mix in the past. This is a great way to use it. Thank you Emmy to teach me to think out of the box. I am also going to make some raisin cinnamon bread instead of paying all that money at the store. I couldn't believe a cheese strudel was $8. The prices keep going up up up.
I know it cost us some money up front, but starting last year, we are adding a few raised bed gardens each year. Each bed is 3' wide x 12' long, but the height of each bed depends on what is being planted in that bed. (Our soil is solid clay.) This year we are growing 2 types of green beans, onions, spinach, radishes, tomatoes, peppers, 2 types of cukes and our perennials that include strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and asparagus. I just LOVE to go out to the garden picking our own salad ingredients, and some berries to add to our ice cream. You sure increased the amount of your container gardens this year. It's great that you have a high-up deck to keep the plants away from most weeds and animals. In addition to our gardens that saves us money, we also find most of our entertainment in our own home. All 3 of our kids and their families (we have 8 grandkids) live within 8 miles of hubby and I, so all 16 of us get together once a month for a family dinner and games.
I love watermelons in the summer and always have one cut up in the fridge. We take the juice that’s left in the bottom of the bowl and make our own ice pops. You can also do this with canned fruit juice you might normally throw away….loved the corn cob broth tip😎
I build every year one new raised bed from pallets. The whole year I'm filling it up with garden waste, woody cuttings, weeds, sawdust, thin layers of woodash etc. Over winter I'm covering it with a layer of active compost and cardboard. Over winter the cardboard is breaking down. Next spring I'm adding a new layer of homemade compost and the bed is ready to plant. Zero cost and only a little patience is needed.
If I want to cook chicken to use later in other recipes, I put it in the crock pot at night while we sleep. The kitchen is cooler at night and then, even the heat from the crockpot dissipates in early morning.
I am serious, you could put Dixie on her own channel and you would make millions! Her reaction when you were talking to her about the condition of the bed was like...."just look how cute and innocent I am, how loving and adorable, and how much you love me...just don't be mad ok" she is just too much❤❤❤
Oh my goodness you're Dixie Belle is so adorable. I love how they look so guilty and yet they're wagging their tails because they are so in love with you.
My summer time tip is to buy a box of ice cream treats. Then when the icecream van drives past, I can get one from the freezer rather than paying over the odds for something we can get for a fraction of the price. Packing our own snacks and rinks ehen leaving the house is also a must as "I'm hungry" gets said when going to the patk, river etc. Saves a bundle!
Are you subscribed to our channel? Also, make suer you click on the little bell at the subscribe button and hit "ALL." Every time we make a video UA-cam will let you know!
G'day Emmy and Paul, another jam packed video of advice and ideas. Thank You both. I have a quick bit of news. I bought an old house (circa 1935) and although well built it was neglected somewhat. The bath and vanity are a dusty pink, a colour no longer "in vogue" and there were rust marks on the enamel around the base of the taps, it was Ugly and an eyesore - so, not having the funds for a new bathroom I set about first a huge cleaning effort then tackled the rust on the pink enamel with.....wait for it... A Matching Nail Polish!!!! Yes! I purchased a colour so close it is undetectable unless scrutinized meticulously. I have "dollyed up" the grout and polished everything and painted. Spent $60 and that bathroom will look quite presentable for a good while yet. So Nail Polish for bathroom enamel patch ups is my tip. 😁
A few years ago I planted a couple of raspberry bushes now I have a whole patch it takes some maintenance in the spring but so worth it raspberries are my favorite fruit. I also love to sit outside and watch the fireflies at night
My summertime tip is to go pick fresh when you can! We live in Western Washington and are known for all our berry farms. Instead of buying already picked (at the farmer's market or whatever), we like to go to the berry farms and pick ourselves. Blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and even currants. It's fun and less expensive than buying them picked for you.
@@joycewright5386 our area has started charging admission as well. I now have to think of it as a cheap outing with my daughter rather than a way to save on groceries…it’s $5 a car, so we meet halfway and ride together into the farm.
@@joycewright5386 Same here in Illinois not worth the price to pick myself. I think it cost us like $20 for a pound of blackberries which is ridiculous.
My summer saving tip is the plant swap with friends and neighbours, we all have the one or two plants that grow extremely well, my friend has a green finger for beans, I am great with strawberry, another friend is an ace gardener when it comes to suflowers, so we trade and all get wonderful gardens. Also for holidays now is a great time to use up all the little christmas body care giftsets as many are the perfect small size for taking on summer trips. And it is a great time to look out for winter or autumn items on discount and a great time for anyone with school children to look out for free school books or summer reads as many will give away their old ones for free.
What I'm going to do to save money this summer is every time we have a rainy day I'm going to go in my sewing/craft room and work on Christmas gifts. Oh my goodness on the corn cob trick! So clever! I worked in the laundry and dry cleaning industry for 28 years and yes yes yes washing your clothes in cold water and line drying them will make them last almost "forever"! Your videos/channel are my favorite of all the money saving channels out there ❤
We capture our water from our shower. Instead of letting the water go down the drain when warming up, we catch it in a five gallon bucket which e then transfer to our rain barrels. We have droughts here in Texas and this is one way to save water and money.
Concerts, kids sports, free town events and festivals, picnics, ice cream in the yard with friends, find a kid and go to park and play, hiking, bird watching, walk in the moonlight, flower gardening, . All free and fun.
Take your own food... whether you are doing local errands or on a road trip, it could be a mug of coffee, a sports bottle of iced tea, snack foods, sandwiches, or even full picnic meals.. it will add up to savings. There are usually roadside Visitor's Centers with facilities and picnic grounds off major highways... or local parks, even a store parking lot before you run in to make a purchase can work in a small town.
Yes enjoying our own yard is enjoyable….all the flowers and vegetable garden and pots look fabulous and fun!!! Our grandson loved cutting the ripe strawberries 🍓from our container plant…..picked cherries 🍒 from my brother orchard…all the neighbors and friends loved them. Sharing feels great
Watch for clearance meats after a holiday/ or weekend sales ad. We got Chuck roast and steaks for $2.99 lb, as well as fresh ground pork for $2.49 lb. I just vacuum packed them and put them in the freezer for future meals.
I use a thick sirloin pork chop like a small roast for the two of us. Brown the meat. Add chunks of potatoes, carrots, onions, and celery that we've grown to roast together. Good bread can be $5 a loaf. Don't be intimidated by baking your own. Try new recipes. Those artisan, rustic breads are not complicated. Eat a couple of pieces of fruit and raw vegetables each day. Better than chocoate cake. Have a snack on the porch swing. Hydrate without sugary drinks. Chat with your neighbors. Check email once each day
Christmas club idea was great. I did that with the envelope system everything got one. Then for every $100 put it in bank so I'm now ready for the holidays.
Upick places make a great family day. We like doing berries and corn with our kids. We also get tons of zucchini every year from neighbors for free. I'm talking about the length of my arm. We don't like zucchini much, especially my daughter and I, the boys are all luke warm about it. So I shred and freeze it. I'll add handfuls here and there to just about anything. Soups, stir frys, taco meat, sloppy joes. Its less noticable and so much better. We also have a zucchini casserole recipe from my husband's grandma thats a family favorite. Has so much cheese and onions you can hardly taste zucchini at all
I’m very mindful about using plastic containers over and over again that are not real safe for consumption because of the plastics have all the chemicals in it I would invest in some glass containers for your freezer I have and I have zero waist. I love your show you inspire me every day and someday I’d like to just send you a whole boatload of helpful hints that I have used over the years has saved me lots of money and time. Thank you again you and Paul are doing an outstanding job.
Fun video! Here's my money saving tip...our water costs alot, about $150 a month! And our climate is very humid. So to water my outdoor plants, I use the water from our dehumidifier. It ends up being a whole bucket of water by the time the dehumidifier fills up, which at least waters the container garden in the back.
Thanks so much for the tips! I'm planning on setting up a clothesline in our garage this summer to keep things cool in the house. The Texas sun makes our garage hotter than our dryer anyway and there's no clothes hanging out in the yard to annoy the neighbors.
My attitude, rhe beughbirs can fet iver it! When .u was a chikd, every ine gad& used a clothesline. It was ni biggy! Ok, sime chikdren woukd kaught at tge bug fat oersins u dies hanging on the line, my grabd mither to a woid spokn ti our bottoms( im 1if 12 grabdkids) we were nit aloud ti ve cryel ir nean!😊
Your container garden is beautiful. When traveling always make and pack meals instead of wasting money eating out. Love your channel. My favorite couple. Oh Dixie you are so adorable ❤
Looking forward to it!❤ from the thumbnail it looks like making up a jug of lemonade, iced tea or other cold drink which I used to do and need to get back into. On hand for company and ready for a hot afternoon refresher.
Emmy and Paul, I hope you are ok with the smoke from Canada. I made 3 big jars of stock from the ham bone and used it on a chicken white bean stew. It’s so good. We cook a vegetable broth from the corn stem, carrots, celery, dried figs and the corn silk. It is so sweet and we drink it in place of water for a treat. One more last tip for the corn silk, add a bunch in a pot of stock that has meat, it will soak up all the grease and fat.
Hi Emmy and Paul. We have a low water steam canner and we use it to preserve fruit, pickled veggies and jams. We also dehydrate fruits and veggies and freeze produce also.
Born and raised in Oklahoma, we always tried to block off any unused areas. For example, close off any extra bedrooms or areas you don’t regularly use. This way, if you don’t have central and must utilize window units and fans, you aren’t wasting electricity to cool unnecessary rooms. If you have ceiling fans, make sure they are turning the correct way. One circulates the air downward (cooling the room) while the other direction pulls air upward (warming the room).
When I have corn on the cob I leave it intact and freeze it. When I'm ready to cook it I let it thaw and cook it unshucked. It tastes like it was picked the same day
We keep bottles of water in the freezer, they stay frozen longer than ice cubes and when they thaw out can be used for drinking water on a picnic or long car trip.
Hello Little Lady…. Just wanted to let you know, you have encouraged me to retire at 55…. I had ALREADY PLANNED TO DO SO… I am a Licensed Optician and have already worked at the same optical 29 years I have 4.3 years til I’m 55 .. We own 4 homes NO MORTGAGES NO DEBT selling 2 homes We will continue to live in one as well as my daughter in the townhome… My husband is 16 years older and has already retired… Our health insurance is the big obstacle… as well as you two… Your money saving tips are WONDERFUL… and thinking about starting my own UA-cam on Frugal Living…. YOU ARE AWESOME 👏
My money saving tip is to look for free activities in your area to take your grandchildren to. We have an arboretum with an outdoor amphitheater near us. They have free science shows for kids. We take our own snacks and drinks. The kids live exploring the arboretum after the shows. This is just one example of the many inexpensive activities you can do with the kids in the summer. Love your videos Emmy! Keep them coming!😊😊
TUBI is fabulous and you don't even need to sign up! I don't drive any more, well I dropped Amazon again, it was convenient. I dehydrate everything and put into mylar bags. If I am making sandwiches, I make 5 and throw 4 in the freezer, one of my favorite dinners is a baked potato bar, I have a fridge full of condiments. I have a new idea for salads what I do is fill a bowl with thinly sliced veggies, olives, roasted peppers, onions and top with red wine vinegar, a teaspoon of olive oil, oregano salt, pepper, a half teaspoon of sugar. put it in the fridge for an hour, pour the contents over your lettuce and your salad is ready.
Ha ha... I still cook on a wood stove, and our hot water comes from the wood stove, but I get very good at using electric appliances more and the stove getting hot for less time in summer.😂 amazing what tricks we do to stay cooler.
Make your own iced tea, and remember Kool-Aid, Instead of soda ( we say pop in Cleveland). Save money , control your sugar/ sweetener and still be refreshed.
Hi Emmy and Paul! One of the things I do is open up all the windows in the morning to cool the house down. Sometimes I’ll put a fan in front of the door to bring the cool air in faster. Then close everything up once it starts to warm up and close the blinds. The house stays cooler longer and I can avoid running the AC. My mom used to use an electric rotisserie or her crockpot outside to avoid heating up the house even a little bit. Our summers get hot and stay hot (above 90f degrees at night) for weeks so every little bit helps. This summer I plan on baking bread in the crockpot outdoors. I’m also thinking about a solar oven. May as well harness all that hot sun beating down.
@@d.parisi I’ve used the recipe Emmy has linked below, and I’ve also used a couple I’ve found by googling. I’ve done bread rolls, and I even baked a more rectangular shaped loaf by putting the dough in a regular loaf pan and placing it in the crockpot. Super easy!
My husband and I go swimming in an outdoor pool in the next city for free, instead of the indoor pool in our city, that would cost us $6 each. It is only 7 minutes away. Here in Arizona, we look for things to do that will cool us off. Saves us $48.00 a month in the summer. And yes, we have been using Roku for 4 years now.
Summertime money saving tip…use my crock pot or convection oven or make cold plate dishes so I don’t have to turn on the oven and use as much energy. Also keeps the house cooler too.
My summer tip is to plan ahead in your budget (and freezer) for the 4th of July meat sales. The big packs of chicken, ground beef, sausages, etc. are usually at loss leader prices that week. Last year in our area these were 1/2 to even 1/3 regular prices. A little time spent re-wrapping into right-sized portions will be well worth it.
Hello Emmy and Paul My children and I take advantage of the city library in the Summer. They have have free programs and crafts for kids. Even the adults like the story sessions. I really love your videos.
This one is not free, but it is money saving: I don't have a yard so I got a membership to a local historic house and garden so I can visit as many times as I like through the summer (for the cost of about 3 tickets I go 20+ times just in the summer, plus more throughout the year). They have special events, many of which are included in the regular admission price (so free for members,) but sometimes I go on a day when nothing special is happening, to see how the plants have changed over the past week or to sit and spend a beautiful afternoon reading a book. It's a nice change of scenery from my apartment and when I budget for the membership throughout the year it costs less each month than any streaming service (except for that black friday hulu deal). And you mentioned free events: I like to look at the calendar of events from my local library and at the museum passes you can check out for free, too. I also always make sure to get gas when I run a particular errand that is near a gas station that consistently has a lower price than the ones nearer to where I live. For those without a garden, I've found that my CSA share costs less than I was spending on fruits and vegetables at the grocery store, the quality is amazing, and I get to support a local farmer and learn to cook with different kinds of produce I might not have tried on my own.
Best summertime money-saving tips: homemade iced tea from tea bags and iced coffee from leftover morning coffee. Daily (frugal) "getaways" are going to the local waterfront parks on the Hudson....gorgeous scenery, refreshing breezes and paved walking paths are cheaper than a gym! Hope you got through this week's smoke choke. I was such a blessing and luxury to open the windows today. Truly, the simple and little things make life wonderful.🌞🌻💕
Hello Emmy and Paul! I'm a brand new subscriber and wished I had found you sooner! I am loving your channel! My summertime money saving tip is riding my bicycle or walking instead of driving my car. Plus it's great exercise!
My Summertime tip for saving $ is riding my bike for errands vs driving my car, going to free outdoor movies and concerts, growing my own tomatoes and herbs. and packing a picnic lunch or dinner and taking a book from the library and enjoying the outdoors. Our local museum offers free admission for students. I'm encouraging families to pack a picnic lunch, ride their bikes to the museum and then enjoy the museum exhibits as a family. Very inexpensive, but educational outing!
Making homemade sopa de arroz with jalapeno chili, onions, and tomato sauce sauted in olive oil, and grass-fed butter, is a good filling taco, or burrito ingredient that can be combined with taco meat, refried beans and/ or cheese!
Now that I found this channel, I’m catching up on at least your most current videos. I have already harvested my rhubarb, strawberries and mulberries. I am now foraging for black raspberries. It will a busy summer soon with all the canning that happens here. I’m really enjoying your videos
As it is cool in west central Ohio right now, I have the AC turned off and the windows open. Loved Dixie at the end! My cat will lay in the middle of the bed while I’m trying to make it in the morning!!
Instead of tossing canned vegetable juice, I use it as water replacement for cooking rice or potatoes. It can be used as the base for soups as well. Also when making flavored gelatin, add cold juice instead of cold water. The taste is so much better.
My money saving tip for the summer time: try to make amazing drinks at home. Whether it's iced coffee or some great cocktails, fancy drinks are something a lot of people really enjoy in the summer time, but they're so easy and cheap to make at home (and often, you can vary the ingredients to fit your personal preferences even more!). Additionally, it is a great idea to invite some friends over for some drinks. It's so fun to make them together and enjoy in the sun.
I really like the idea of cutting the corn off the cob. I am saving more money by going to the store less times during the summer. Thanks for sharing your ideas. I checked off 13 of the ideas because I am already doing those frugal ideas.
Keep your curtains closed during the the day to keep the heat out, open every window at night when it's cool to air all of your home. That way you use very little energie foor cooling your house
In the summertime I am collecting and drying herbs (mint, rosemary, basil, thyme, nettle), fruits (strawberries, blackberries, applepeels, lemonpeels ), and flowers (roses, lavendula, marigold) for making a big jar of my tea of the year. I dry them one after another, put them in a big jar and that's it. It is also a nice gift.
Love Vienna sausages. I kept several cans and take hotdogs put in then cut even with the top of can then put salt water in the can then cover with baggie and put in fridge. Not as good as the real thing but saves a crap load. Vienna sausages and the salt water in it is one of the best things for u n hot weather.
I love tv channels that are free. Like Peacock, Freevee, tubi, xumo, crackle These are all free to me. ..here, gas went up again. I try not to complain as I work from home but have to keep the car running and that uses gas... I live stay at home vacations or just day trips. And honestly, I love a book, a good movie. etc...awesome tips!
Cut dryer sheets in half and use half a sheet. It doubles your supply as prices rise. Don't tell the manufacturer. They will reduce the sheet size and raise the price😊
Not just for summertime, use smaller plates and smaller bowls...if you want seconds, you can have it, but you may feel nice and full and save some money (and icecream ;) for later!
Hi Emmy and Paul. Great idea with the corn cob broth. In the summer, I keep the curtains closed when we are getting direct sun. Also, keep the a/c higher during the day and turn it down a few degrees at night to make sleeping more comfortable. Loved seeing Dixie's "nest" ... she is so precious. Hope you both are doing well with all that smoke. We can actually smell it here in Maryland and some days were very hazy. Have a great weekend.
Several years ago, a friend of mine from California came to visit me here in NC and she and one of her work colleagues and I took a week-end trip to Washington, D.C. It was a very enjoyable & memorable week-end.
Summer money saving tips that we use- we are in Orlando and the heat and direct sun drive up our AC bills June, July and August. We monitor the night time temperatures (and humidity) to see if we can open our windows to let in the cooler night air. We close up the windows early and pull our room darkening curtains for the hottest part of the day to keep things cool. It goes without saying that we use fans and keep our thermostat at 78 degrees.
I do it all year but summer peak electric hours are 1-6 pm here. I now do all my laundry and baking before 1 pm. I also am mindful of the a/c and turn up during that time. Lastly no tv between those times either. I enjoy the pool everyday I can or am out and about walking or running errands during that time anyway. Thank you for your tips always. Enjoy your summer Emmy and Paul!!!😊
Corn cob jelly is also an option. After cutting the kernels off the cob we scrape the cob with a spoon to get the "milk" and use it for "fried corn", add butter, salt and pepper..its wonderful.
I am saving the plant ends of romaine and lettuce, I place in a small jar with a minimum amount of water and regrow a second use. I also have planted crops we eat in a series of raised beds which we usually add 1 bed a year to most of which are 3 or 4 feet by 6 or 8 depending on the lumber pieces we use. Our gardens are my adult daughter and my (78) year old toys for the summer. I do love to find soap bubbles to blow the dogs love to catch them. Will have to dig out my old recipes and make some.
I have a HD antenna to get local channels and many other over the air digital channels. Summertime: I buy excess of fruit in season to make jams, jellies or freeze for other dishes, hang clothes in the garage. I will be doing your corn method, love it. Started a garden during the pandemic which has expanded, we are eating fresh veggies and fruit almost every meal, saves big money. Thank you for all your tips.
As always, luv all your tips. Many yrs ago, my Dad taught me the tip of saving gas & time by running all your errands at one time. In a circle for more efficiency. I laughed out loud when you circled with you hand. We live in my parents home in the country so we start each trip 25 miles from town. You will be surprised how much you can save. ... Thanks for all the time you spend bringing these to us. Glenda
I moved deep freezer into living room. I put Reflectix on inside of all exterior walls and ceiling. Its mid June and havent had to turn on window ac yet just fan. Plugged freezer into same electric outled as ac. I shut off freezer 4 hours then on 2 hours. Do this all time. Shut off electric stove till need it. Shut off fridge/freezer 4 hours then on 2 hours all day saves tremendpuslly. Only using 2 outlets . Got pellet stove saves on electric heat. That n Reflectix saves a lot.
I take my left over plain yogurt, tsp of maple syrup, blue or strawberries or even peaches, and left over walnuts and freeze them in popsicle molds and have yogurt healthy popsicles in the summer!
We have a tension rods & blackout, heavy curtains that goes in the doorways of our living room where the AC goes. No need to have AC splill into the sunny kitchen, especially if cooking. Saves a ton and it keeps us cool.
Sounds like such great memories Erin!
Hi😊
We live in Norway, by the sea. It gives us the opportunity to catch a lot of the fish we eat for the rest of the year.
In Norway, we can fish for free in the sea, so this saves us a lot of money.
We also have a small container garden where we grow some vegetables.
Thank you so much for an inspiring channel.
Oh how wonderful! Fresh fish!
Yes! Great way to save money and have a great day out!
we learned this the hard way after moving back to the US from overseas... We went to the local county fair, and some mozzarella sticks were 15$, a lemonade 10$, a small slice of pizza 8$... WTF???
Let the tomato suckers get a bit bigger and plant them for more plants that are only a couple of weeks behind the parent plant.
Oh gosh I forgot about that! We did that last year!
Sounds wonderful! So happy you are enjoying your new home! Hugs right back!
When my kids and grandkids were younger, and during covid shut-down, we did a lot of picnics. Even peanut butter sandwiches taste better on a picnin! We also keep our eyes out for free outdoor concerts and movies often put on by local communities and libraries.
We just went to a free outdoor concert the other night! So fun!
Wonderful ideas Dawn! Thanks for sharing!
Found it!! If anyone wants to give it a try!!
Corn Cob Jelly
INGREDIENTS
12 corncobs (kernels removed)*
1 package fruit pectin (1¾ ounces)
4 cups granulated sugar
Water
INSTRUCTIONS
Directions:
In a large stockpot add empty corncobs to 6-8 cups of water.
Yes, that's a creative and fun way to still enjoy the ice cream!
My summertime money saving tip is to can all the fruits and vegetables that are in abundance to use year round and that saves you money in the winter to just be able to go to your canning shelves and pull what you want.
Do you think a second hand canner is ok or should I splurge on a new one?
I have to learn
Used is ok as long as it is in decent shape. Look at the bottom of the pan and make sure it’s not warped. You don’t want rust in it either. Water bath canners have this sometimes when they’re used. Pressure canners - you might also have to buy a new seal for it and you always want to reach out to your extension office to have your pressure gauge tested. If you get a new one the gauge is already regulated for the first year. Presto is a good canner and is not terribly expensive if you decide to go with a new one. I bought used water bath but went with the new pressure canner. You’ll do good! It’s fun to learn
Love that!
I do the same, plus I dehydrate. I have been canning meals also.
Lynn, I do the same thing. Yes, Emmy and Paul, you have achieved your purpose of encouraging and helping others. 😄 love you both
YAY Lynn!! I am proud! Good for you! I bet that salad was delicious too!
Patty, thank you so much!
Love how you all gather as a family! That is so wonderful Kim!
I love watermelons in the summer and always have one cut up in the fridge. We take the juice that’s left in the bottom of the bowl and make our own ice pops. You can also do this with canned fruit juice you might normally throw away….loved the corn cob broth tip😎
Love those tips!
I make watermelon jelly, it's so good.
@@deborahcollins9623never heard of that before, I'm going to look up a recipe. That sounds good.
Wonderful!
If I want to cook chicken to use later in other recipes, I put it in the crock pot at night while we sleep. The kitchen is cooler at night and then, even the heat from the crockpot dissipates in early morning.
Great idea Veronica!
I am serious, you could put Dixie on her own channel and you would make millions! Her reaction when you were talking to her about the condition of the bed was like...."just look how cute and innocent I am, how loving and adorable, and how much you love me...just don't be mad ok" she is just too much❤❤❤
LOL! She literally has us wrapped around her little paw!
Oh my goodness you're Dixie Belle is so adorable. I love how they look so guilty and yet they're wagging their tails because they are so in love with you.
Yes! She is such a blessing to us!!
Great ideas! Thanks!
UA-cam doesn't recommend your channel often, but it is one of my favorites, and you both are always helpful. Love to you both!
The bath and vanity are a dusty pink, a colour no longer "in vogue" and there were rust marks on the enamel around the base of the taps, it was Ugly and an eyesore - so, not having the
funds for a new bathroom I set about first a huge cleaning effort then tackled the rust on the pink enamel with.....wait for it...
Brilliant!
Merryl, that is so clever!! WOW!! I bet it looks wonderful!
Tv is free no newspapers no magazines no takeaways
A few years ago I planted a couple of raspberry bushes now I have a whole patch it takes some maintenance in the spring but so worth it raspberries are my favorite fruit. I also love to sit outside and watch the fireflies at night
That is awesome! Raspberries are expensive too!
Making sun tea is my summertime tip.
Isn't that the most fun, and delicious too lol!
In NJ a farm charges $11 admission then the cost of the fruit you pick!
Very nice!
❤.😊
Wonderful tips NJ! Thanks so much!
Your videos/channel are my favorite of all the money saving channels out there ❤
So kind D. Paris! Thank you!!
We capture our water from our shower. Instead of letting the water go down the drain when warming up, we catch it in a five gallon bucket which e then transfer to our rain barrels. We have droughts here in Texas and this is one way to save water and money.
That is so smart!
Concerts, kids sports, free town events and festivals, picnics, ice cream in the yard with friends, find a kid and go to park and play, hiking, bird watching, walk in the moonlight, flower gardening, . All free and fun.
Exactly! Such lovely events!
Yes, that saves so much money!
Yes, we will be doing just that Elizabeth!
Check email once each day
@@karenahrens1756Drinking soda causes tooth decay and osteoporosis. I used to drink diet soda all day. I now make sure I take calcium every day.
Has so much cheese and onions you can hardly taste zucchini at all
Yes, they are a great outing for a day!
Thank you for your kind words.
Fun video! Here's my money saving tip...our water costs alot, about $150 a month! And our climate is very humid. So to water my outdoor plants, I use the water from our dehumidifier. It ends up being a whole bucket of water by the time the dehumidifier fills up, which at least waters the container garden in the back.
Brilliant! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much for the tips! I'm planning on setting up a clothesline in our garage this summer to keep things cool in the house. The Texas sun makes our garage hotter than our dryer anyway and there's no clothes hanging out in the yard to annoy the neighbors.
LOL...funny fact. I will never hang my undergarments outside EVER LOL!
My attitude, rhe beughbirs can fet iver it! When .u was a chikd, every ine gad& used a clothesline. It was ni biggy! Your container garden is beautiful. When traveling always make and pack meals instead of wasting money eating out. Love your channel. My favorite couple. Oh Dixie you are so adorable ❤
So kind of you to say!! Thanks so very much Melody!
Looking forward to it!❤ from the thumbnail it looks like making up a jug of lemonade, iced tea or other cold drink which I used to do and need to get back into. On hand for company and ready for a hot afternoon refresher.
Making iced tea right now. 😊
I remember Sun Tea was a big thing when I was growing up. Does it work? Is it any good?
Thank you both Helen and Renee for watching and sharing!
😊
Born and raised in Oklahoma, we always tried to block off any unused areas. For example, close off any extra bedrooms or areas you don’t regularly use. This way, if you don’t have central and must utilize window units and fans, you aren’t wasting electricity to cool unnecessary rooms. If you have ceiling fans, make sure they are turning the correct way. One circulates the air downward (cooling the room) while the other direction pulls air upward (warming the room).
Yes, that's a great tip! Thanks Jennifer!
Picked my first radishes , lettuce and strawberries this week , so proud of myself . All grown from seed
From seed?!! Good for you!
In a heatwave I would freeze a hot water bottle of water. Put it behind my back when seated . Lasts for 5 hrs.. blessings Maria 🙏 ❤
Thanks Maria!
When I have corn on the cob I leave it intact and freeze it. When I'm ready to cook it I let it thaw and cook it unshucked. It tastes like it was picked the same day
How do you cook it with the shucks? Boil? Grill?
We keep bottles of water in the freezer, they stay frozen longer than ice cubes and when they thaw out can be used for drinking water on a picnic or long car trip.
Great idea!
I'll be right back, Emmy. I'm going out to find 200 people to get you to 50K. An early and heartfelt CONGRATULATIONS to you and Paul!!!
Love you my beauty! We actually only need 110 lol😄
That's wonderful! Yes, health care is a BIGGIE!! Look into all your options.
Thanks for watching and sharing Darlene!
Wonderful ideas Kitt! Thank you!
You can make jelly out of corn cobs too, some folks say it taste like honey.
Ha ha... I still cook on a wood stove, and our hot water comes from the wood stove, but I get very good at using electric appliances more and the stove getting hot for less time in summer.😂 amazing what tricks we do to stay cooler.
That's so wonderful!
Make your own iced tea, and remember Kool-Aid, Instead of soda ( we say pop in Cleveland). Save money , control your sugar/ sweetener and still be refreshed.
Love that Shar!
Wow! Do you have the crockpot bread recipe ? Our temps are mostly high 80s.
D. Paris, Here is a link to our crockpot bread recipe video ua-cam.com/video/_0g1o6ztJd0/v-deo.html
@@FrugalMoneySaver Thank you!
Thanks for sharing Cathy!
Always keep snacks in my car for longer summer days to avoid stopping for food.
Same here! Helps so much!
Summertime money saving tip…use my crock pot or convection oven or make cold plate dishes so I don’t have to turn on the oven and use as much energy. Also keeps the house cooler too.
Great tip!
YES!!!! Great tip!
Hello Emmy and Paul My children and I take advantage of the city library in the Summer. They have have free programs and crafts for kids. Even the adults like the story sessions. I really love your videos.
Thanks so much Judith! Yes, the library is a gem for sure!
We love the library in the summer. Our libraries always had summer reading programs for kids to earn prizes.

Taylor what a great idea about the pass! I bet it is just beautiful there!
Eat before going shopping or an outting
Best summertime money-saving tips: homemade iced tea from tea bags and iced coffee from leftover morning coffee. Daily (frugal) "getaways" are going to the local waterfront parks on the Hudson....gorgeous scenery, refreshing breezes and paved walking paths are cheaper than a gym! Hope you got through this week's smoke choke. I was such a blessing and luxury to open the windows today. Truly, the simple and little things make life wonderful.🌞🌻💕
Yes, that smoke was bad!! We love to visit the Hudson as well!
C'mon over! Would love meeting you guys and Dixie too! Beautiful breeze at the river tonight....not a whiff of smoke....hope it stays this way! ☺
I make sun tea. Just add tea bags to glass container and sit in the sun. Later you can add berries and make flavored tea.
I always buy Organic Corn as it's one of the most highly sprayed produce for pesticides including roundup also most corn is GMO.
Hello Emmy and Paul! I'm a brand new subscriber and wished I had found you sooner! I am loving your channel! My summertime money saving tip is riding my bicycle or walking instead of driving my car. Plus it's great exercise!
Welcome Lori! So happy you found us! Thanks so much!
Dixie sure is a pretty little girl Emmy!
Thanks so much Sheila!
A fishing pole and tent makes a good vacation
My Summertime tip for saving $ is riding my bike for errands vs driving my car, going to free outdoor movies and concerts, growing my own tomatoes and herbs. and packing a picnic lunch or dinner and taking a book from the library and enjoying
the outdoors. Our local museum offers free admission for students. I'm encouraging families to pack a picnic lunch, ride their bikes to the museum and then enjoy the museum exhibits as a family. Very inexpensive, but educational outing!
Love that Just! Wonderful!
Making homemade sopa de arroz with jalapeno chili, onions, and tomato sauce sauted in olive oil, and grass-fed butter, is a good filling taco, or burrito ingredient that can be combined with taco meat, refried beans and/ or cheese!
Sounds great!
Now that I found this channel, I’m catching up on at least your most current videos. I have already harvested my rhubarb, strawberries and mulberries. I am now foraging for black raspberries. It will a busy summer soon with all the canning that happens here. I’m really enjoying your videos
Oh wonderful! So happy you found us! Thank you!

Wonderful tips! Thank you!
Love that Reg!
I did that with coffee yesterday and it was delicious. In the uk it would cost £3.50
I freeze left over coffee in ice cube trays, store in a freezer bag and add to my brewed coffee.
Tubi is another place that is free where you can watch movies
I take the scraps from veggies dry them on my dehydrator put them in my ninja & make a salt free seasoning out of them
Great idea!
I really like the idea of cutting the corn off the cob. I am saving more money by going to the store less times during the summer. Thanks for sharing your ideas. I checked off 13 of the ideas because I am already doing those frugal ideas.
Wonderful Katherine! Good for you!
Keep your curtains closed during the the day to keep the heat out, open every window at night when it's cool to air all of your home. That way you use very little energie foor cooling your house
Great tip!
Sounds like a lovely gift!!
Very clever idea actually!
Thanks Valerie for watching and sharing!
Cut dryer sheets in half and use half a sheet. It doubles your supply as prices rise. Don't tell the manufacturer. They will reduce the sheet size and raise the price😊
Great idea!
Not just for summertime, use smaller plates and smaller bowls...if you want seconds, you can have it, but you may feel nice and full and save some money (and icecream ;) for later!
Love that!
Yes, the worst of the smoke is gone thank God! You have a great weekend as well, thank you!
Several years ago, a friend of mine from California came to visit me here in NC and she and one of her work colleagues and I took a week-end trip to Washington, D.C.
It was a very enjoyable & memorable week-end.
Sounds lovely Susan!
Orlando is one of our happy places! LOL!
You as well Debbie, thank you!
Fans! I live in TX and fans are a must. I have several and keeping the air circulating through my house allows me to keep my thermostat higher.
Thanks for sharing!
Corn cob jelly is also an option. After cutting the kernels off the cob we scrape the cob with a spoon to get the "milk" and use it for "fried corn", add butter, salt and pepper..its wonderful.
I play it a game how much i can save i find cooking a casserole in crock pot feeds me for week
I planted my romaine ends this year. I was shocked at how quick it grew.
Wonderful Paula! Thanks for sharing!
Love that you already eating from your garden! We still have awhile...sigh!
Glenda
Thanks so much for the smile Glenda! Your dada was a smart man!
mmm...quiche! Eggs were .92 cents a dozen at Aldi!!! Finally cheap eggs. Thank you for the video.
YAY! Finally seeing the price drop!
You also have tubi TV, Pluto, crackle, peacock, and if you like anime Crunch and roll.
Yes! So many!
Place a slice of orange in your cup of tea
Love to do that!
I LOVE ❤❤ the corn broth recipe! I grew up on boxes and cans. Thank you for sharing your skills wth us. We appreciate you!! ❤❤
You are so welcome Ramona!
I take my left over plain yogurt, tsp of maple syrup, blue or strawberries or even peaches, and left over walnuts and freeze them in popsicle molds and have yogurt healthy popsicles in the summer!
What a clever idea!!
Re County Fairs,,, the booths closest to the entrance always charge more.
I am from Canada but am visiting the States in the fall. I can’t wait to go to Dollar Tree! Hoping to get lots of Halloween stuff there!
Oh they have some fun Halloween items! They put them out early in the season too!
We have a tension rods & blackout, heavy curtains that goes in the doorways of our living room where the AC goes. No need to have AC splill into the sunny kitchen, especially if cooking. Saves a ton and it keeps us cool.
That's a clever idea! Thanks for sharing!
I bottled nearly 100 jars of corn one year. Not great for the arthritis in my hands, but fantastic in the pantry. Winter here in Australia. 🌽🇦🇺
100 jars! WOW!
