I’m watching the miniseries again after watching the new film and have decided thjs is the definitive version for me. The realities of the world of the war, the writing and the characterizations of Marmee, Meg, Brooke, Mr. Laurence, Beth, and of course Maya Hawke’s unforgettable Jo are perfect.

Totally agree. The novel is a coming of age story. The war, in many ways, forces that growing up. The Gerwig movie sort of felt like it was missing an essential element of the conflict.
Anyway, gorgeous song. We’ve come to enjoy singing this with our 4 year old daughter. Can’t wait to read the book with her.

I agree 100%. Even as a younger girl I always related most to Meg. It could be because I am also the oldest of my siblings, 3 girls instead of 4, lol. But her life always sounded, and still does sound the most appealing to me. Her and John are so underappreciated and are just everything I want in life

Watched this last night and bawled my eyes out. Over 620,000 "Johns" were killed in the Civil War, as many as those who died in the previous wars and WWi and WWII combined. I know "John Brooke" survived, but can't help thinking of all those who did not and of the bereft Megs and Marmees left behind.

I watched this for the first time yesterday and I haven't been able to get it out of my head. I can't remember the last time I heard such a heart-rending, touching, bittersweet and just downright gorgeous song, and sung by such heavenly voices. I've watched this clip about a dozen times already and it's made me sob each time because it reminds me of my recently departed Grandmother (she introduced me to Little Women by way of the 1994 Winona Ryder version) and just how fleeting and precious life is. I didn't think a version of Little Women could make me cry and feel more than the 1994 one but this mini-series proved me wrong. Beautiful!

Then I watched it and absolutely loved it. Great cast, cinematography, scenery. A lot of love went into this and it shows. Maya Hawke *is* Jo out of the book.

There is an article on the BBC right now, saying Robbie Burns often gets the credit for this but the credit should go to Lady Carolina Nairne, his contemporary. Our days are aye fair

    Now fare-ye-weel, my ain John,
This warld's cares are vain, John,
We'll meet, and we'll be fain,
In the land o' the leal.
O, dry your glistening e'e, John!

    An angel beckons me
To the land o' the leal
My bonnie bairn 's there, John,

To the land o' the leal.

The joy that 's aye to last

Came back over this today.. Watched the BBC Series when it was on, and the film. Do love the film for Sairose Ronan's performance as Jo was outstanding. But this... This captures Little Women in a completely different light.. All the family are so well cast, I love Emily Waston as Marmee and all four of the March siblings have their definitive voice in this version, plus the harsh realities of war. Makes me cry but this sequence is outstanding. When Beth takes and fumbles with the telegram and turns and her mum is waiting at the door alone to hug her.. Just stunning.

This has for many years been a favorite Scottish song of mine, and I perform it often. We lost Mother in August, and the day after Thanksgiving (this past Friday) her little dog, Rusty, followed her to the Land of the Leal, where he is reunited with her and Daddy. Holidays are hard without those you love, and even losing a dear little dog casts a pall. This song speaks for my heart right now...and this version, while missing the Celtic feel, is still lovely, especially the harmonies. Silly Wizard has a lovely version, too.

I read the book and have loved all the versions made into film. Each version had something the others didn't have & all have plenty to tell us. I understand that this was not the kind of book Louisa
wanted to be her legacy, but was talked into it. I have watched this BBC version several times. The casting was beautiful, but I do wish they could have used American actors since it is the most
American of novels. The actors were wonderful, but I would have to say that I would have preferred seeing an all American cast. We have plenty of wonderful American actors that could have
done a great job in those roles. No one knows exactly who wrote Land of the Leal, but it is almost universally attributed to Robbie Burns. Could it have been written for the Civil War? or just sung then? From Oakland CA 2022

It was written by Lady Caroline Nairne, a Scottish contemporary of Burns, but it is usually mistakenly attributed to him as she kept her writing secret, even from her husband. Annes Elwy, who plays Beth, is the soloist in the 2nd and 3rd verses - and I think it is the actresses singing the first verse but I'm not 100% sure

I've never seen this version. Looks great. Anywhere I can stream it? I've been getting my adaptation fix from Anne with an E on Netflix. It's so brilliant. Check it out if you're looking for more classic lit adaptations.

I know the film two years later did get a bit of a drubbing, but I wish this one had been more recognized at the time as the lovely adaptation is is.
