Speaking as someone who lived in Southeast Asia for close to 15 years, there are certainly other reasons to go live there. The prostitution thing is something that nearly every guy, no matter his intentions over there, gets sucked into at one point or another. Usually in the very beginning. Can’t fault them - it’s easy to do, base instincts and all. But it’s also usually the case that the ones who can’t rid themselves of that crap pretty quickly just flush out. Most of the westerners who have lived there long term have long since given that up. And the thing is, it’s totally unnecessary. If you’re on top of your sh*t, women there will throw themselves at you regardless. But yeah, there’s way better reasons to end up over there. Easier life for one. Extremely friendly people. Being somewhere so different that even something as mundane as going to pick up your dry cleaning can become an adventure. The food is exceptional. I ended up in Indonesia because of the scenery. No matter how shitty a day I might be having, I would remember where I was and look towards a horizon of volcanoes and palm trees swaying in the breeze and feel truly lucky. I spent a most of my time in far flung islands where I could access the jungle. At least in the late 90’s and early 2000’s it was possible to get way out there. And when I was in the big cities, sure, I had my fun. But certainly not what drove me to go or to stay. I’ve been back here for 6 long years. Very thankful to have found Cumtown. Made me laugh a lot during a pretty crappy time. I have been waiting for the opportunity to move back and I’m finally right around the corner from it. Hopefully it’s not completely f*cked now from Instagram and digital nomads. But anyone who is just interested in seeing a totally different version of the world, regardless of their sexual proclivities, Southeast Asia is an incredible place.
