i would deeply recommend either Bending Hectic by The Smile or Sail To The Moon by Radiohead. both beautiful and complicated songs i think you’d definitely enjpy
My sense the last few years with The Smile is just Thom and Jonny and Tom Skinner are just really enjoying being musicians. They are setting musicial and even physical instrumentation challenges for themselves without the sounds seeming overly calculated or pedantic, and without losing the harmonious sounds and heartfelt nature of what makes their work so meaningful.
Bending Hectic would be a fantastic track to react to by The Smile. You'll notice that as Radiohead and Thom have progressed, they've gotten more into weird time signatures and jazzy experimentations, and this seems to be most prominent with The Smile.
"Could be weird for the sake of being weird... but this isn't" Thats pretty much everything Radiohead/The Smile have done summed up in one sentence ! Loving these breakdowns, looking forward to more.
Thanks for doing another The Smile song. Thom and Jonny are in another golden age of songwriting. Really think they’ve been making music just as good as their Radiohead catalogue. Everything they’ve put out the past few years, collaborations, solo, scores and The Smile have been really outstanding. I would suggest Junun, Jonny’s collaboration with the Israeli Composer Shye Ben Tzur and the Indian Rajastan Express. To quote Pitchfork: "Bollywood-style brass exuberance, the devotional Qawwali music of Sufi Islam, and bowed-string instruments associated with the Manganiar community". Whereas western music is based on harmonies and chord progressions, Greenwood wanted to use chords sparingly, and instead write using North Indian ragas. They also have lyrics sung in Hebrew, Hindi and Urdu. It’s an album I really enjoy and think you’ll appreciate. Check out the title track as a starting point. Play it loud! A real trip!
Another great reaction video! You liked this song so I think you’ll also really like their song ‘Friend of a Friend’ from their latest album. It came out a few months ago.
Yesss, looking forward to a deep dive! I’m also amused by the chord structure. I’d love to see you react to Teleharmonic or Hairdryer from the Smile. Unmade from Suspiria would be another great thom yorke solo song w great depth.
Would love a deep dive on this one. Loved what you had to say there and a bit of how the song was structured. Yeah, didn't panavision pioneer the anamorphic lenses, where it would stretch the image in camera, and then in editing, they'd compress it to it's original shape, giving a wider image. The other video for this involving actors was for the TV series, Peaky Blinders. Great show. I always thought Pana-vision would make for a great Bond theme. Fun fact: Radiohead made 2 Bond themes that were ultimately rejected. Spectre (great piece, you should check out) and Man of war. I believe this was made for a mid to late 90's Bond film. It was officially released in 2017 as an OK Computer B side to mark the 20th anniversary. Thanks again, Erol, to you and your daughter.
I think the Smile is absolutely his style. Both absolutely beutiful albums they've put out. In some ways i enjoy it even more than radiohead. The Smile so harmonic.
Great reaction Legend! Hey I think you should check out Beck - Paper Tiger. It's produced by Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich. Beck is another incredible diverse artist that also deserves a deep dive.
Jonny Greenwood is the lead guitarist and plays a heap of other instruments for Radiohead, but is also one of the most sought after composers in Hollywood. He's partnered with Brilliant Director Paul Thomas Anderson for every movie he's done in the last 20 years starting with his titanic score for "There Will Be Blood." He has 2 Academy Award Nominations. He's the really super trained musicologist in the band - Thom is on to his 2nd movie - but all the Radiohead strings along "The Smile" is done by Jonny. They are really the Number 1 and 2 in Radiohead, their collaborative musical prowess is what has made RH into the legendary band they are - not to take away from the other 3 members who are all top flight at what they do.
"the hidden syncopation in Radiohead's Videotape" is a very interesting video which I think you'll like a lot.
The Smile song "I Quit" has an interesting nine note bass line that I just love. Great one to check out.
Panavision is great. React to Skrting on the Surface if you havent yet! its my fav

Sail to the Moon is probably their most complicated song time-signature-wise. It's all over the place yet somehow doesn't sound like it is.

Saw them live. Great show. Tom Skinner is great!

Bending Hectic live is something you must delve into soon!

Paper Tiger is dope. The album it’s on. Huge Serge Gainsbourg inspiration. Mixed beautiful. Lush. You’d definitely be into it
