What a lekker video, enjoyed this one a lot. The technical videos are some of my favorites to watch. The Hilux is looking sharp! Keep it up, you're making a big name for yourself
Its amazing how your vehicle looks from underneath in the relatively drier climates that you get. Here in Chicago US, we get crazy rust with all the snow. Even with rust protection it still gets pretty bad after just a few years of usage.
Intercooler will lower more the EGT, then get another map, also be carefull with the Auto trans, that also will need a trans cooler and a reprogramming.
What was the prime decision for choosing the 2.4 vs 2.8? Also, what was the cost differential between the two options taking in account the purchase price and mod costs?
the 2.4 was hugely cheaper, and well worth the difference in my opinion. Its R12k-15k to chip and tune; and the price difference was R80k between the two. I simple couldnt afford the 2.8 even if I wanted to.
LP's got a point, especially now that the turbo has failed only a year later. I know a turbo isn't 65k, but one per year could add up quick. Anyway hope it was just a once off failure.

Time to fit a larger intercooler now and decent egt gauge onboard. Otherwise you are still guessing.. awesome build nevertheless, I’m sure you have these mods planned..👌🏻
@@RoamOverlanding yup I suggest you remove your manifold and get the guys to drill tap and weld a bung into it for the sensor and run a stand alone gauge in the truck. Location of this sensor is important for an accurate reading. Also air intake temps make a huge difference under turbo applications, that small standard intercooler will heat soak pretty quickly when you are in the thick stuff! Good luck! Loving the content 👌🏻
Sounds scary! >.< Got the Snorkel installed recently and the airfilter was totally clogged up, so the truck is feeling much better on the highway now even just with those changes too.
I’ll be completely honest, I dislike diesels. They sound like generators and feel quite bulky, like it should be on a lorry, not a personal vehicle. But that Hilux is coming along beautifully! There’s no doubting low-down diesel torque which I think is really helpful on the trails. Also that bit about how you can choose your engine performance with your phone seems awesome!
I didn't understand the power figures. Was it in kilowatts and how much power do you have now? I read the air filter was clogged when you installed the snorkel. So I'm surprised the uni-chip tuners didn't check that. And maybe you need a retune.
Awesome video! Not sure if the Toyota’s have the EGR system seeing as they don’t have a cat? but just curious if they did an EGR delete to your vehicle when they were tuning?
Well done, just wondering if you have replaced the injectors and had the EGR disassemble and clean done? Is highly recommended will help greatly with the new exhaust as well as longevity of the motor.
After nearly twenty years of overlanding, I have found that it is the aftermarket "stuff" that gives the most problems. What is the prognosis on engine wear and tear with the exhaust and chip? Do you anticipate reduced life for the engine?
Absolutely! There is no getting more power out of a Toyota and not putting pressure on. To think that the engineers wouldn’t get what they could without reducing life is ludicrous.
Great stuff man like the truck now. would also do the same if i would have the opportunity. last week i asked the question about the power. the chip is also my preferred choice because if you have a problem you can remove the chip to eliminate that when diagnosing a engine problem. this is awesome i would like to know the model of chip you have installed i have dastek on my 2005 isuzu and on my fortuner i have a base dastek chip. great show love what you do. would love to see you in the kalahari one day.
My vehicle is just about to end its warrnty at the moment. But If they found it in and you needed to claim on the warranty it would probably be a problem.
I removed it and got the vehicle remapped, now I’ve installed an egt gauge, and it turns out even the remap is running too hot. Time for another custom tune with an egt gauge for hopefully a third time’s a charm results
Instead of fooling the sensors, rather get an actual ECU map which alters everything and set them. Instead of telling the sensor I need X + 2. Piggy pack is just that, its a piggy back, not a real software map. SIES
The exhaust note sounds like a muffled stitching machine. Not much you can do on a turbo engine as the turbo quites things down a lot. Would have been cool to hear the turbo spool up though.
I hear it more now actually, and then I recently put on the Snorkel which gives me much more turbo noises. I feel like the pipe sound has really changed nicely now.
Hi, what does a Unichip tune cost? I have a "simple" dyno "Stage 1+" engine remap on my turbo diesel that cost me 425 euros. Increased the horsepower by 24% and the torque by 22%.
I’m not sure what the price is in Europe. What I like with it is having 5 different maps, gives so many options for different situations and then also means you aren’t running at +20% all the time, so less strain in the engine. I only use Ultimate when I need to 👌🏻
It sounds great in the dunes and when it’s reving out and about. But tricky to hear on camera, we even struggle with our v8 cruiser, and that thing sounds amazing in real life
@@RoamOverlanding Understand. Just thought with all the accessories and planned performance upgrades the 2.8 as a base would have maybe been better. Anyway, nice vid - has nice roar to her now!

Wow the effort put into this car is astonishing
Kudos from California, love these episodes man, always looking forward to watch the next ! 🤙
Have a UniChip installed and tuned in my Hilux 2.7 VVTi petrol. Fantastic. Love the extra torque down low the most.

What a brilliant idea.. I love it.. good luck and waiting for the adventure..
Don't forget to get a cover for the spare tyre on top.. 👍
Learning so many things from you bro! Hello from the Philippines!
Happy to hear that!
Adrian, thanks for the Viper discussion. Been thinking about ordering one for my Jimmy. Now convinced. Thanks mate.
cant wait to see this beast on the road
The transformation is insane🤘 and now the power output matches the looks👌!!!!
Wow, if those consumption figures are to go by, that chip and tune is a must-have. On a good drive on my std 2,4 gd6 I get 13l to 100k's
I like it for the 'chune'

you should also consider re-gearing because of the heavy weight of your truck and bigger wheels.
cheers from Canada!
Nah the Gearing is actually really nice at the moment, its currently 4.1. If I went to 33" tires I would definitely need a regear though!
Looking great, how much is the cost of all the upgrades?
Hi Adrian 2 years on would you still have doen this? Has it ever gone back to limp mode after fitting the chip.
I removed the chip, because it was doing lots of limp modes and issues. Since then I’ve remapped it and it’s been fine
@@RoamOverlanding same same Adrian also had that thanks for the reply.
2.8 1gd is a beast

Hey John this motor was actually replaced at 40,000km so I’m sure all is pretty good I’m there still with only 40,000km on the new motor
After nearly twenty years of overlanding, I have found that it is the aftermarket "stuff" that gives the most problems. What is the prognosis on engine wear and tear with the exhaust and chip? Do you anticipate reduced life for the engine?
The Dastek approach to chip and tune prioritizes reliability over pure power, I’m confident going forward, but time time tells all truths.
Absolutely! There is no getting more power out of a Toyota and not putting pressure on. To think that the engineers wouldn’t get what they could without reducing life is ludicrous.
Hi friend! And what about the consumption? how it has increased? Thank you!
It has come down now, because the motor is running much more efficiently

Thanks. Looking forward to seeing more. It's great to have a channel promoting overlanding and local brands in SA.
You decided after all your research that effectively a ''tuning box'' was the safest way to extract some more power, rather than a proper tune?
I removed it and got the vehicle remapped, now I’ve installed an egt gauge, and it turns out even the remap is running too hot. Time for another custom tune with an egt gauge for hopefully a third time’s a charm results

Its handling it all very nicely. I couldnt afford the 2.8 so it just wasnt an option. I dont feel any regret though.

Nope, no chip at the moment. And the remap is running too hot on the EGT’s. Going to need to re remap again with the EGT Gauge

Nope
