Daniela, you are such a sweet individual (and so very knowledgeable too!) It was very nice of you to assist this young lady in giving her your invaluable advice! Although I have not gone to design school, your advice has been a godsend to me as well. I love to sew and have recently started teaching myself draping. Your videos have been truly informative and your advice today has gone a long way in making me more confident in taking that step to feeling good about the work I do. I'm praying for much more success in everything you do and thank you so much for sharing a little bit of it with us!

    Hi Daniela,
I was first introduced to sewing at the age of 10 my mom was showing me how to hand sew and I thought it was the most hardest thing that I was taught, but a few more times I had gotten use to it, and I wanted to learn more, in high school that was the very first time that I used a sewing machine in the 9th grade I remember it like it was yesterday my teacher Mrs. Bradley saw that I really wanted to learn how to use it she saw me struggling and took a personal interest in me wanting to learn and God Bless her for that, now I have been sewing and making clothes for my children and Grand kids but just for my family and I want to go further but I don't know if I can.

I feel like I need to tell my story because I still can't get over it and I hope something good comes out of this. I graduated in June 2016 after attending a 2-year fashion scool from Milan which started running a course in my town. I can't say I didn't learn a thing but I CAN say that my teachers weren't as prepared as they should have been. They practised one year of teaching and it showed. As a fashion teacher who works for a well-known school you should be able to help your students develop their style, not yours and that's what they did in the end. They also weren't able to teach the whole scheduled subjects as they did in the HQ. I was treated as a whiny teen because I tried to point out some of the mistakes they made (they were huge mistakes that would have been noticed by anyone) and I ended up the last few months feeling like going there was a bit of a chore. the situation went south during the last month and I didn't even enjoy my good marks because I wanted it to end fast, no matter what. anyway, after feeling uninspired and empty until like some weeks ago, I started drawing again and now I started some social media profiles (e.g. patreon, etsy and my own website) and I really hope I manage to sell my clothes but I don't know if I'd resist under some Anna Wintour wannabe that yells in your face, so... that's one more thing that stops me a bit, along with the feeling of "what if I hit the bottom of the barrel when I'm too old to apply for a 'normal' job?" because I can live with a part-time job and a fashion career if that's my future, but the list of 'what if s' is so long... I started being more positive and active just because I'm driven by some kind of hopelessness and negativity. I know it may sound funny but that's what happened to me. I might have just realised that I'm just gambling my own life and my passion. I really hope it works. they say "when life gives you lemons, make lemonade" and I'm sticking with that.

I use to feel my teacher hates me😄😄😄 it was stressful through the school days, but as time went by, I stop dwelling on what I cannot do and start finding ways to do it👌🏽👌🏽

I really love the fact that you giving like full and Sir videos for your fans and I think also that you're right sometime we don't talk about this part of the industry about how hard it can be to feel confident about what you doing about your own creation and stuff... sometime it's not easy to fill that confident about what you doing when there's so many people out there doing just as great and it really can make you doubt about your own self... I'm really glad you came forward with this video, I think it's going to help a lot of young designers out there

Crystal's question described exactly what I am going through. my teacher just does not like anything I make or I am not able to explain her anything or work under her. But I have always been very creative and made amazing stuff, my friends and family have always loved my work and say I am super creative but fashion school made me feel dumb and I had to rethink my choices as well

Hi Daniela, I was thinking about the way your pictures were stolen and incorporated in someone else's website. That really bothered me. You are so giving and helpful with your ideas. Then I remembered there is a way you can post your pictures so that they cannot be copied. I don't know what this software is called. Maybe some of your other viewers know. At any rate I think it would be worth checking this out. Some of the major retail sellers use it. I wish you the best.

I am scared. I have no idea where to go. I did an internship and she discrimated me and I was yelled constantly. It missed up my mind. Luckily I didn't give up and I just finished my bachelor degree in appreal, textile, merchandise with a minor apparel design and I moved back home. And right now I am deciding to find a job in retail to pay for my loans. Luckily I have friends tht would pay for my designs in making certain garments but I realized I make mistakes and I noticed that I needed to practice cutting other types of fabric. I always hesitated in charging my customer over price and I feel like I am being payed underpriced. Where can I keep the sweet balance of things. Often time it just easy to make garments on my own body type but doing garments for others is always a challenge.

This was my entire college career the teacher situation I had to check her multiple times by senior year I knew how to construct garments. I'm still learning & fashion school doesn't teach you everything but that other half of knowledge you have to be able to develop/ discover on your own. Fashion word is cut throat and Savage. Your teacher was toughing you up for the real word...yeah she could do it respectfully. But honestly design school made me pay attention to everything read everything and catch it and turn it out. I always loved the pressure/ chaos of fashion!

I'm really glad you put this video up because I thought I might of been the only on thinking that fashion schools aren't teaching us everything or the really vital things we need to know. Or how some or the teachers are just teaching from the textbook. I feel like they should teach from the textbook and from experience

There are different types of teachers as well as students. There's so much info out there especially here on UA-cam that you really just need formal education for the paper in the end.
To Crystal, as Daniele said "we all learn different ". Try UA-cam, books, forums, Anything.

Tell her she better tell that teacher off because she's paying to learn so they need to make sure that she's learning and getting her money's worth. Speak to the head if there's any problems because it's not fair for someone to treat you like that. On another note I've got a question about inspiration. I feel like I'm stuck in a fashion design course with no inspiration around me. How can I feel inspired what can I do to make me want to design things.

look at pictures you like which aren't related to fashion and turn them around until you find the most inspiring angle then try to make a dress out of it. I felt the same thing while I was preparing my degree collection and I had no clue what to draw bc I was following a concept. I changed to something that I loved deeply (which has been "tea" since then) and I saved as many pictures as possible related to situations in which tea is consumed and teapots. I managed to invent 56 dresses and I only needed 18.

#Daniela Tabois: I loved Fashion school but I can relate to the pressure of working quickly... projects did not always come out the way they were intended. As for the confidence I feel that is gained through the more experiences you have... I don't believe you should always just wait on something to be given or assigned to become better at sewing or designing . I feel you should dive into every project and work through it diligently. I have been sewing and designing for 10 years but it has not always been a business for me. Alot of my work is family oriented or friend related. Friends tend to by my work. I have been a creative since my preteen years . You are right people do want something simple so your goal for a market trend should be to create with in the confines of what others want. Your design process and aesthetic will change over time.
