Thanks for the history lesson. I had no idea about the duel aftermath that Bowie was involved in. Love the knife. I bought one similar when I was 17, back in England when I was a kid. It was a cheap mass-produced knife but like yours had a lot of weight and thickness to the blade. Then a couple of years later I bought another Bowie, but about half the size - made a great general-purpose knife and was forged in Sheffield, England - so was good quality. I was born in Sheffield and most of my family at some point worked in the steel industry, so we know our knives. I still have both knives, in great condition even though I'm now 63. Looking forward to your next history class. All the best.

Scheffield produced the majority of bowie knives coming to the states in the 1800's. Great cutlery. Germany had salinger but Scheffield had the reputation in the day.

I have the Western W49, that that knife is based on. Yes the Sand Bar, Natchez, Mississippi. And he was not using a "Bowie" knife, and thank you for pronouncing it right. Bowie was most likely using a large butcher type knife. The design of the "Bowie" knife we know of today, most likely came about after Bowie's death, 1838ish. Bowie was run through at least once with a Cane Sword.

It was made here in Old Washington. Couple hours away from me. He had other knives made, but the one in the sandbar fight was supposedly made here in Arkansas. The blacksmith shop is still there and they do reenactments every year. Pretty cool place

It's been heat treated from SZCO Supplies dealers
No need in doing anything but putting a good edge on that beast and I have two for over 6years now and the both are as good as my Cold Steel Wild West Bowie and Condor Undertaker Bowie if not a bit tougher. So don't worry you can trust that one.
It in the right box and if you got it of Amazon you got the right one 🌜🌛

I'm pretty sure his brother made the knife and it really was a large butcher knife. The English made most of the "bowie" knifes after that. Influenced by the Spanish long knifes.

I got one too. Hacking away with a nice Case model or using an unavailable Western is just too risky. I want a blade I can use and not worry about scratching or getting dirty. This Szco actually works in the field or at camp. Carbon steel blade sharpens really well.

Mine holds a edge and is heat treated just fine and it's real deal carbon steel because I put a decorative patina on the blade and it toke like a champ ,it as good and many Hundred Dollar Bowie knives and just fine like they are so who ever said that is just not a fan of budget blade of either hating of the SZCO Bowie. ⏳⚔️⏳

Great video thanks for the history lesson. I have a few knives like that you can't beat the price for those knives as long as they hold the edge who cares how hard the metal is if it says it's hard and then I guess it's hard and it might not be a Rockwell harder or something like that but as long as they hold the edge you're good you definitely got your money's worth.🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🌎🌎🌎

The history and craftsmanship of various blades caught my attention in knife collecting. And I know what that feeling is when you get a pretty knife. I called it (too good to use syndrome).

I'd consider the sheath to be worth the price of the whole lot, frankly.
This thing's an amazing bargain - at this price you could buy it to use as a basis for your own creation, for example.

You do not want it "Razor" sharp if your going to chop with it. The finest edge I would go, would be 22 degree's. If your chopping hard wood, 24 degree;s. A razor sharp edge will dull and perhaps roll or chip. So make sure your edge is supported. Yes I sharpen and use knives every day where I live, in Wyoming.

I'm fairly certain that what we know as the Bowie Knife came about after that Sandbar Fight on the Mississippi. In fact Bowie had a butcher knife that he used in that fight, but it did need design improvements and his ideas influenced what was made in Arkansas and became the basis for many excellent fighting blades to this very day. His original knife was given to a friend when he left for Texas, at least that is the story that came to me. Either way, this vid is most entertaining and like much of American history is open to interpretation; Earp and Tombstone being the perfect example of many stories available on a single event. Best wishes.

In the days when people carried a sword, and then a big knife and pistol. The blade was always carried on the left hip, and you used a cross draw to get it out. And no, you do not want it higher the handle will jab you in the ribs, and it will not be easy to draw. Trust me I know what I speak of. Back when I hunted with a single shot rifle and carried a revolver. The revolver was always on my right hip and my knife on my left hip. That is pretty much SOP. But you will have to work it out for yourself. I prefer a dangler sheath for my big knives, and I have more then a few.

No, they became More popular after he died. To the point that knife makes in England began turning out "Bowie" knives for sales in America. What caused the "Downfall" of the Bowie knife was the introduction of the Colt Revolvers. Because now you had 5 to 6 reliable shots. Now this isn't to say people out west did not carry a Bowie knife, because many of them did, but by the Civil War, the Bowie knife was starting to fall out of favor. Yes I am a knife nerd and collector. I own the venerable Western W49, and if you do not know what that is, look it up on UA-cam. The knife you have is a rough copy. There are better, like the Cold Steel Wild West Bowie. Stay sharp. Bowie was very sick at the time. If the Mexicans had not killed him, he would not have lasted much longer.

No, its a very cheap knife with a handle that already looks cracked, or chipped up by the guard on one side.
