    For those that think you need to do all this long process ypu don't I literally took the seeds out of the scotch bonnets I was using to cook with put them in a pot with soil from my garden put them outside and they sprouted and I live in sunny old England 😅

      You’re right you definitely don’t have to do all this, and what you describe is what has been done for thousands of years. Always room for improvement though! Starting the plants inside can give you a longer growing season and a better yield.

    your scotch bonnet grew fast I planted some a month and a week ago the biggest is about 2 inches tall with six small leaves the plants are barely there some half inch and some an inch and a half I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I put them in plastic cups with just potting mix and I bored some holes this week I used dirt from outside and changed the cups I added no holes and plants started to grow u could see a big difference that's how the tallest one got to about 2inches. The plants are located on my window sill that's kept open and they do get sunlight plus I water them almost every day.

    Did your spoon tomato seedlings look sickly under the grow lights after a few weeks? I read a lot of comments with similar issues that disappeared after they were moved outside.
    You keeping the spoon tomatoes in containers is the way to go. I couldn't keep up with the growth on the one i had in my bed. 6ft tall, 6ft wide bush. 8ft long root by end of season. Had to prune it with a machete. Fun plant but wow it's tedious to harvest.

    • @jackspepperpatch
      @jackspepperpatch  8 місяців тому +1

      Mine didn’t stay inside too long, so I didn’t get any of that. They are extremely prolific though and I feel you with the tedious harvesting! At the beginning of the season it was fun picking a few to snack on every time I walked by, but by the end of summer harvesting was a chore. I spent 30 minutes one day filling a huge bowl and I still didn’t pick all of them so I left the rest for the birds. Even as the plants started to go downhill in the late summer they continued to produce well. But they are delicious and fun! They always got a great reaction from people when I’d share them too! I’m glad they ended up in buckets as well, that was a side effect of them being freebies and me not having a chance to incorporate them into my bed planning for the year but as you said it definitely worked out.

      Thanks! I did not, but that’s a likely cause because I do have all sorts of critters. I was more worried about getting it away from the others in case there was some sort of disease going on. Did you have something similar happen?

    • @pffffffffffffrtttt
      @pffffffffffffrtttt 8 місяців тому +1

      @jackspepperpatch I had it happen one time this past season and it was because some sort of beetle that ate all of the roots. I only had one plant affected. I'm in zone 9b so we just had our first frost this week. 2023 was my first successful year growing peppers and tomatoes after trying and failing for the first time in '22. I started my new seedlings in December and am fortunate to have the space to try and triple what I did last year. I enjoy your videos!

    Good video. Do you keep the lid covered on your container after they sprout, off the heat mat while they grow their true leaves? Also, how close do you keep your light to them?

    • @jackspepperpatch
      @jackspepperpatch  8 місяців тому

      Hi! I take the humidity dome off once they have all germinated and are fully upright. I did leave them on the heat mat the whole time they were inside the house though just because I had them in a room that stays cooler. My light is not very good, so I kept it as close as possible to the seedlings when I wasn’t filming clips - just a couple inches above them for most of the time.

    What type of potting soil do you use/recommend?

  • @kimbailey742
    @kimbailey742 7 місяців тому

    Any help would be awesome. I started a bunch of pepper seeds ranging from ghost peppers to italian sweet slicers. 72 cell trays, hest mats with humidity domes. This year, I covered the seeds with vermiculite. What I didn't realize about one week in that they have not been getting enough water. (Because of rhe vermiculite)
    Do you think they are done for?

    • @jackspepperpatch
      @jackspepperpatch  7 місяців тому

      Since it’s only been a week, they might not have germinated yet. If so, they should be fine as it won’t hurt the seeds to dry out. But if they already germinated then dried out then unfortunately they probably are done for. Maybe you could carefully dig one up to see if it’s germinated? If it hasn’t then I’d just keep them moist going forward and maybe they still will.
