This looks really easy trimming those roots to save on potting soil. I am thinking of using peat moss and vermiculite mix to store them in over winter.
That's perfect, no light is fine for a few months as they remain dormant. Key for me is the temperature, 60 degrees fahrenheit is very good. Also water lightly every 3-4 weeks. Keep me posted in few months time!
I overwintered a couple of Nagas last year on a window cill but they both grew leaves and pods so you should keep your eye on them and remove any growth. This is proof that the plants are receiving too much light. Your basement at 60 degrees is around 15 degrees centigrade is ok but you'll need to check the watering too as they will dry out and potentially die and def no feed. you can rinse the roots and drench the whole thing in Neem oil before potting into the fresh soil to keep pests at bay then unleash them in the spring you'll have great fruits long before any seeded plants.
We have an outside lean-to that's got a south-facing window and has been super-cladded, carpeted and integated into our enclosed lobby. I would imagine the temperature will remain above 12°C, higher if we want, and we will put mirrors in, probably some kind of moderate lighting. So would you still recommend the zero style-over?

Brilliant question. Few years ago I used to leave roots uncut. But they ended up pot bound and grew too fast during winter period. I also have a problem with space in my conservatory and shed, so cutting the roots help me fit more plants in pots. Chilli peppers are very tough to bounce back, a short haircut on the roots is no problem, they'll regrow in coming months.

Haha yeah, stay tuned. They are coming back to life, some didn't make it, that's my fault for not covering them up during frosty conditions!

That sounds awesome. 12°C is ideal, bit of tender loving care, perfect. I'll again start overwintering the peppers in month or so.
Cool, I will do that for the next winter. Should I trim my peppers now before sping? ( I did cut them a little for winter).
I would trim them back a little, not much though. I gave it a little hair cut couple weeks ago.

why do you cut the roots off though? why can't you just leave them in the pots they are in and overwinter them like that
