MONSTER Cottonwood tree reductions, these were scary!!

  • We had 3 Massive Cottonwood trees to heavily reduce in height and width for hazard mitigation purposes. We only found out quite how bad they actually were once getting high up into the canopy. You can tell with the tones of our voices and the heavy breathing that we sure were nervous. This video really doesn’t give you the true scale and height of these trees, or how sketchy they felt.
The adrenaline rush of knocking some of those huge limbs and tops out really was something else.

This is such a good video because it captures the stress of the person teaching the new guys while simultaneously performing the work. The noises you make when the other guys are making cuts are the same ones I make when training my guys, and the same noises I made while watching your guys from my comfy chair at home hahah very very cool and I can tell it's a big one because I finally heard you curse. Did some trimming on a large sweet gum today. Not being able to use spikes made climbing around in it difficult cause the limbs were few and far between. Resetting my lifeline had me shitting. I was only about 65' up and it was a strong tree but I haven't been climbing all that long still have a lot to learn and get comfortable with. A couple times all I wanted to do was bail out and repel down but I hung in there. The only way we grow is by getting out of our comfort zone. Respect to you on this nothing easy about it. That was edgy for sure. The video work only shows a small part of what theses big nasty babies are truly like. These have to be my least favorite trees to climb, especially when they are this big, but more so when they are this rotted and just nasty dangerous. Great safe job. Watching this put me right there with you. And I would have had at least two safety lines on as well. Nice choice with the mini carabiner there too, having a breakaway in place is very wise Dan, Very wise. A rescue up there would have been a big difficult job. Cottonwoods suck. Biggest removal I ever did was a cotton. My 120’ line got me to the first crotch with two big stems, drt, then had to rope out every piece because it sat between power lines on each side. Took me three days as the one climber with two guys running my ropes.

Cottonwood trees (especially ''Eastern'' & ''Plains'' cottonwoods in the U.S.) are quite beautiful trees when they are young and only about 10 to 15 feet high, with a nice dense crown. This finished job was not pollarding, the trees were lopped Lopped Cottonwoods (aka Poplars) rot very quickly and any regrowth becomes unstable. This trees should have been felled, across the garden and the client warned beforehand to expect that there will be some dents in the lawn and some damaged shrubs, but that's always better than someone taking a chance and ending up in a wheelchair or a coffin. Always listen to your instincts and take good care of yourselves.

Dont blame you sweating it on that junk Dan, theres plenty holes i can see in your cut shots, its not a nice feeling climbing above trashed spots its always gonna make the sphincter pucker, you’re not sane if it doesn’t....i like your 2nd line weak link karabiner idea, i recently climbed a big fat dead as f### Oak with a pronounced lean towards a road that had been pollarded a number of years previously but it had killed it off ( been standing dead a few years by now and the bark was coming off in sheets, why they leave them till they’re bad is beyond me) and was tied into a big sycamore behind it but at about 55’ when it was moving around too much for comfort, for a tree of that size, I bottled it and topped a big 25-30’ top about 26”diameter (had a 20” bar on a 441) in that spot and it speared into the soft ground about 3 - 4 feet.... the ground conditions were so wet and lush i wasn’t sure how bad the roots were cos i didn’t bring my x ray eyes that day and had a ‘bail out’ plan if it started to go which involved unhooking my older 2 gate flip line hook rather sharpish ( didn’t want to use a 3 gate on a rope positioning lanyard in case i messed up the release despite the obv danger of using the wire line ) sweats were off once that lump was off but after seeing this vid i do like your ‘weak link’ karabiner plan better, what poundage do you est. it would fail at? Wouldn’t want to over load my harness points altho...I think i will keep that tactic in mind for future arse clenching jobs....you’re definitely in ‘Patrick’ territory working this crap eh.. its usually him i’m watching dealing with the ‘deceased’ in the cemetary...! Never pleasant, but handled well. Worth an ask if the homeowner cares to dynamite them hahahaha. Seriously, well done.

There is a very expensive fence and Christmas tree farm on the north side, hence the little bit of rigging you see in the video

Ohh man they should have been taken down those trees... And replant something else, those trees are gonna rot alot at the big topping cuts. If he didn't want to deal with all the wood you guys could have just gotten it out of there, extra cost but not as much as coming back in a few years and taking them down anyway. Just my humble opinion anyways a job well done and safely!

Ya being tied in twice still doesn't give ya much confidence does it?
Oki 1/2 way through the vid and it looks like you're cutting breadsticks. My guess is if you dropped it whole, it would have shattered.
3/4 of the way thru vid I noticed you switched to gas power.😜
Oki now that you showed me the top you blew out, I'm gonna call it potato chips.😲
Best pollarded trees I've ever seen was at the tower of London.😁
